The Design And Construction Of An Inertia Welder, Arthur Ferdinand Grimm Jan 1970

The Design And Construction Of An Inertia Welder, Arthur Ferdinand Grimm

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was the design and fabrication of a machine to bond metal to metal using the inertia method of friction welding. This method of bonding is considered far superior to the heretofore employed friction welding processes as will be explained later. The inertia method controls the energy imparted to the weld by using a flywheel which has been brought to a state of predetermined kinetic energy due to rotation. This energy is then transferred to the weld zone in the form of heat due to rotational friction. Hollow specimens with a cross-sectional area of 0.306 square …

A Proposed Concept For The Rapid Field Design Of Protective Structures, John Ross Childress Jan 1970

A Proposed Concept For The Rapid Field Design Of Protective Structures, John Ross Childress

Masters Theses

"This investigation proposes a simplified concept for the rapid field design of protective structures, subject to attack by conventional artillery rounds, mortar rounds and small rockets. Parameters which should be considered during a rigorous design process are discussed. The number and complexity of these parameters make the rigorous design procedure too unwieldy to be efficiently used, in a limited time period, when materials are not available to comply with Standard Designs. Since the duration of an explosion pulse is very short and uncompacted soil is capable of absorbing explosive energy, this study investigates the theory that adequate protection can be …

A Permeability Scaling Technique In The Numerical Simulation Of Water Coning, Virendra Kumar Dutta Jan 1970

A Permeability Scaling Technique In The Numerical Simulation Of Water Coning, Virendra Kumar Dutta

Masters Theses

"A two-dimensional, two-phase, radial, horizontally layered water coning simulator was programmed for large memory digital computers. A permeability sealing technique is developed which allows the use of large size blocks as production blocks. As a result of this technique large time steps have been used without causing saturation instabilities around the well bore and the permeability scaling technique allows a more realistic simulation of a water cone. The IMPES method is used to calculate pressure and saturation in the system for each finite time step. The behaviour of the simulator is studied for various factors affecting the advance of a …

The Cathodic Reduction Of Maleic Acid, Show Yih Hsieh Jan 1970

The Cathodic Reduction Of Maleic Acid, Show Yih Hsieh

Doctoral Dissertations

"The electrochemical reduction of maleic acid (0.0003 to 0.3 M) was studied on Hg, 0.5% Bi(Hg) amalgam, 5.0% Bi(Hg) amalgam, and Bi cathodes in 1 n H₂SO₄-K₂SO₄-KOH electrolytes (pH 0.3 to 4.0) at 60°C. The maleic acid was converted to succinic acid with high efficiencies (86 to 100%) on all cathodes. Polarization curves with linear Tafel sections were found. All the cathodes had similar kinetic parameters...A reaction mechanism consistent with the experimental observations is proposed..."--Abstract, pages ii-iii.

Temperature Variation In Distribution Of Relaxation Times In Aluminosilicate Glasses, David Wayne Moore Jan 1970

Temperature Variation In Distribution Of Relaxation Times In Aluminosilicate Glasses, David Wayne Moore

Doctoral Dissertations

"The distribution of relaxation times for the alkali peak in a Li₂ O·A1₂O₃ ·2.0SiO₂ glass and for the mixed alkali peak in a 0.5Li₂O·0.5Na₂O·A1₂O₃·2.OSiO₂ glass was studied using the internal friction technique. A lognormal distribution of relaxation times provided the best agreement with the experimental data. The ß parameter of the lognormal distribution function, which is related to the half-height peak width, varied with temperature, indicating that the distribution of relaxation times is dependent upon the activation energy and the activation entropy of the relaxation mechanism. The major contributor to the distribution of relaxation times is a wide distribution in …

Radiative Heat Transfer Analysis From A Heated Airport Runway To Fog, Gordon L. Scofield, Tom J. Love Jan 1970

Radiative Heat Transfer Analysis From A Heated Airport Runway To Fog, Gordon L. Scofield, Tom J. Love

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Radiative heat transfer between a plane source and an aerosol is investigated through the Monte Carlo method. Thermal energy is transferred from a long rectangular source to monodisperse natural fog models. The analysis is only for radiative transport and does not include convection which would be coupled in a complete analysis. Direct energy transfer to the droplets of the aerosol is investigated for values of extinction coefficient of 10 km-1 and 80 km-1, absorption coefficient to extinction coefficient ratios of 0·4 and 0·5, and scattering functions of the strong forward and isotropic types. Monochromatic radiation at a wave length of …

Size Distribution Analysis Of Carbon Black By Andreason Pipette Method, Natarajan Mani Jan 1970

Size Distribution Analysis Of Carbon Black By Andreason Pipette Method, Natarajan Mani

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

There have been several methods commonly used for measuring particle size distribution of particulate systems in the subsieve region, i.e., less than 45 microns. Of the many indirect procedures of particle size analysis, sedimentation methods are among the most satisfactory and most widely used. - The value and appeal of sedimentation techniques are twofold: (1) the equipment required is simple and (2) a wide range of sizes may be measured readily with considerable accuracy and reproducibility. These techniques utilize the dependence of the falling velocities of particles on their size.

This study widely encompasses the various factors involved in the …

Thermal Expansion Of Tetragonal Pbo, Charles A. Sorrell Jan 1970

Thermal Expansion Of Tetragonal Pbo, Charles A. Sorrell

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Thermal expansion of tetragonal PbO, investigated by high‐temperature X‐ray diffraction in vacuum, is nearly isotropic, with the coefficient in the c0 direction only slightly greater than that in the a0 direction. Volume thermal expansion is only slightly greater than in massicot. Retardation of the litharge‐massicot transformation is tentatively interpreted as the result of very low oxygen partial pressures caused by catastrophic oxidation of the stainless‐steel sample holder and resulting oxygen scavenging by lead vapor. Thermal Expansion Of Orthorhombic Pbo, Charles A. Sorrell Jan 1970

Thermal Expansion Of Orthorhombic Pbo, Charles A. Sorrell

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Thermal expansion of orthorhombic PbO was investigated by high‐temperature X‐ray diffraction. The coefficients in the a0, and c0 directions are equal and Pb–O chains extended in the a0 direction and bonded into layers in the b0 direction; appreciable Pb–Pb bonding is indicated. Coordination and bond distances observed in PbSiO3 and lead silicate glasses, which are similar to those of massicot, and PbnOn polymeric units reported in PbO vapor are interpreted as additional evidence of the importance of PbO chains as structural entities. Excitation Requirement For Rectified Output Ac Generators, Richard Thomas Smith Jan 1970

Excitation Requirement For Rectified Output Ac Generators, Richard Thomas Smith

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper develops a method for calculating the required dc field current of a three-phase synchronous ac generator for known dc load conditions and machine characteristics. The method is simple to apply and has shown good agreement with test data. The method is of utility for preliminary design and analysis of rectified output alternators, such as may be used in excitation systems of the largest ac generators, space vehicle power applications, or high-power industrial rectification. Baseband Agc In An Am-Fm Telemetry System, Richard S. Simpson, William H. Tranter Jan 1970

Baseband Agc In An Am-Fm Telemetry System, Richard S. Simpson, William H. Tranter

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The use of AGc loops at the input and output of the FM link in an AM-FM telemetry system allows the mean-square transmitter deviation to be maintained near maximum value, even though data may be nonstationary. However, errors result because of the inability of the receiver AGc loop to track perfectly gain variations in the transmitter loop. In this paper the general characteristics of AGc are discussed, and a theoretical analysis is performed to determine the time constant, steady-state error, and tracking error for a first-order loop. Also, tracking error for first order and second-order loops is investigated by simulation. …

Electric Field Strength Dependence Of Surface Damage In Oxide Passivated Silicon Planar Transistors, C. A. Goben Jan 1970

Electric Field Strength Dependence Of Surface Damage In Oxide Passivated Silicon Planar Transistors, C. A. Goben

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A dependence of surface degradation induced by ionizing radiation in matched oxide-passivated silicon planar epitaxial transistors on junction fringing electric field strength present during exposure is reported. The electric field strength and gamma dose dependence are investigated of the decrease in the forward current gain, hFE (as reflected by the increase in the surface recombination current component), the increase in the surface recombination velocity (as reflected by the increase in the reciprocal of the minority carrier lifetime), and the increase in junction capacitance. Empirical prediction equations have been derived, for matched devices, correlating the normalized base current increase and the …

Penetration In A Graded Filter, William Chuan Shen Jan 1970

Penetration In A Graded Filter, William Chuan Shen

Masters Theses

"An experimental laboratory study conducted to examine clogging within and penetration of fines into a single layer graded filter. Hydraulic gradient, filter gradation and flow direction were varied. Forty one tests gave over six hundred individual penetration depths. The magnitude of penetration in filters with considerable variation in gradation patterns correlated with an average hydraulic radius based on the volume of voids and an approximated total surface area. It has been shown than an increased thickness of poorly graded filter will stop penetration such as that caused by seepage erosion. A relationship between hydraulic radius, penetration depth and probability of …

A Study Of The Composite Action Of Light Gage Steel Deck And Concrete, Charles Sherman Bach Jr. Jan 1970

A Study Of The Composite Action Of Light Gage Steel Deck And Concrete, Charles Sherman Bach Jr.

Masters Theses

"This thesis is on the investigation of corrugated light-gage steel sheets used as the tension reinforcement for concrete slabs. The steel sheets used had embossments placed at uniform intervals over the entire length of the sheets. The composite concrete and light-gage deck steel were tested to determine a method of design for this type of composite section from an economical, safe and practical standpoint. The investigation covered the flexural, shear and bond capacity of this type of composite section"--Abstract, page ii.

Evaluation Of Cascaded Inertial Vibration Isolation Systems, Rajnikant Bhikhabhai Patel Jan 1970

Evaluation Of Cascaded Inertial Vibration Isolation Systems, Rajnikant Bhikhabhai Patel

Masters Theses

"Cascaded inertial vibration isolation systems are examined in this report. Systems employing one, two or three masses in series on isolators are investigated. The objective is to determine if the cascaded systems have appreciable advantages over the classical single mass system. The equations of motion for these systems are derived by applying Newton's second law of motion. The homogeneous and steady state sinusoidal excitation solutions have been established. Transmissibility of forces and moments to the foundation has been obtained for several cases of force excitation. Comparisons of the cases investigated are based upon the principal mode frequencies, mode shapes, center …

A Systematic Study Of Instrument Variables Upon The Accuracy Of Microprobe Analysis, R. A. Parr Jan 1970

A Systematic Study Of Instrument Variables Upon The Accuracy Of Microprobe Analysis, R. A. Parr

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to study the effect of instrument parameter changes upon X-ray intensity measurements of the copper-manganese system. The parameters utilized in this study included: (1) polished, contaminated, and 600 grit surfaces ; (2) constant sample current and constant beam current modes; and (3) 15 KV, 20 KV, and 25 KV accelerating potentials. Inspection of the data disclosed three interesting points: (1) copper and manganese X-ray intensity measurements appear to be a linear function of composition in the 15 KV through 25 KV accelerating potential range; (2) electron backscatter measurements consistently show in a limited range …
