Initial Operation And Calibration Of The Umr Supersonic Axisymmetric Wind Tunnel, James Riley Murphy Jan 1970

Initial Operation And Calibration Of The Umr Supersonic Axisymmetric Wind Tunnel, James Riley Murphy

Masters Theses

"Initial testing and a preliminary calibration were conducted in the UMR supersonic variable Mach number axisymmetric blowdown wind tunnel facility. During initial operations problems were encountered with control valve seat failure, control valve response and stability, and automatic operation. After having brittle fracture failures with seats made of nylon, Teflon and Telfon-copper composite, a copper seat was found to perform satisfactorily with minimal valve leakage. Control valve response and stability were greatly influenced by the setting of the needle valve located between the total pressure probe and the controller. The needle valve setting was observed to depend upon the stagnation …

Etch Patterns On Zone-Refined Fe, M. E. Straumonis, Chang-Soo Kim Jan 1970

Etch Patterns On Zone-Refined Fe, M. E. Straumonis, Chang-Soo Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Upon dissolution of zone-refined Fe in strong acids, mainly three kinds of corrosion patterns were observed in the crystallites of the sections. Regardless of the acids, the {110} plane always appeared on the three patterns in the form of smooth and even steps, ledges, or facets. The {112}, {122}, and {123} planes were also developed but to a much lesser degree. The {100} and {111} planes were not observed because grains of the respective orientation were missing on the sections. Attempts were made to explain the formation of the planes by taking into consideration the reticular density of the planes …

Mass Transfer From Spherical Gas Bubbles And Liquid Droplets Moving Through Power-Law Fluids In The Laminar Flow Regime, Robert M. Wellek, Cheng Chun Huang Jan 1970

Mass Transfer From Spherical Gas Bubbles And Liquid Droplets Moving Through Power-Law Fluids In The Laminar Flow Regime, Robert M. Wellek, Cheng Chun Huang

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Calculated mass transfer coefficients for the continuous phase are presented for internally circulating spheres of a Newtonian fluid traveling through a power-law-type continuous phase in the so-called creeping-flow region. The Nakano and Tien stream functions allow the Sherwood number to be computed as a function of the Peclet number, power-law index, and a viscosity ratio parameter. The Hirose and Moo-Young relation is shown to be a limiting case of this numerical solution. Mass transfer rates increase as the fluids become more pseudoplastic and/or the continuous phase consistency index increases, all other factors held constant. © 1970, American Chemical Society. On The Longitudinal Impact Of Two, Thin, Viscoelastic Rods, A. G. Behring, R. B. Oetting Jan 1970

On The Longitudinal Impact Of Two, Thin, Viscoelastic Rods, A. G. Behring, R. B. Oetting

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A one-dimensional representation of the distribution of stress and strain resulting from the longitudinal impact of two elastic rods is developed. A form of the "correspondence principle" is then used to obtain series solutions for stress and strain distributions resulting from the longitudinal impact of two rods of a "Maxwell material." Results of the viscoelastic solutions, obtained by use of nondimensional variables, are presented graphically. © 1970 by ASME.

Hydrograph Synthesis For Watershed Subzones From Measured Urban Parameters, Joseph B. Evelyn, V. V. Dhruva Narayana, J. Paul Riley, Eugene K. Israelsen Jan 1970

Hydrograph Synthesis For Watershed Subzones From Measured Urban Parameters, Joseph B. Evelyn, V. V. Dhruva Narayana, J. Paul Riley, Eugene K. Israelsen

Reports

An analog computer program was developed to simulate the outflow hydrographs at four locations within the 38th Street Waller Creek urban watershed at Austin, Texas. Actual outflow was gaged at the final outlet of the watershed. This provided a checkpoint for comparing the simulated and observed final outflow hydrographs. The outflow hydrographs for each subzone were obtained by chronologically abstracting interception, infiltration, and depression storage from their precipitation hyetographs. These outflow hydrographs were then routed through Waller Creek channel to obtain the hydrographs at the four desired locations. The advantages of this model are the flexibility in varying the precipitation …

On The Flow Near An Enclosed Rotating Blade In The Neighborhood Of The Ground, Tze-Lien Liang Jan 1970

On The Flow Near An Enclosed Rotating Blade In The Neighborhood Of The Ground, Tze-Lien Liang

Masters Theses

"The flow in the vicinity of an enclosed rotating blade near the ground was studied both analytically and experimentally. Experimental results were obtained by making pitot tube traverses across the face of the housing but gave only a qualitative indication of the velocity distribution. Tufts of strings were used to locate the flow directions in the vicinity of the ground and the housing. The two dimensional potential flow solution was found to yield unreasonable results for this flow configuration due to viscous and rotative effects. The three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations were solved numerically by using the successive underrelaxation method. The results …

Neutron Dependence Of Neutral Base Region Recombination, J. Bereisa, C. A. Goben Jan 1970

Neutron Dependence Of Neutral Base Region Recombination, J. Bereisa, C. A. Goben

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A discrete, deterministic mathematical model has been developed for the bulk base region of graded base devices that accounts for both the effects of neutron-induced recombination and built-in electric field in the base region at low, intermediate, and moderate current/injection levels. Exact expressions are developed for the bulk base recombination current and the collector current as functions of neutron fluence. Exact expressions are derived for the base recombination term and the relative rates of neutron-induced base current increase and collector current decrease. These expressions involve exponential and hyperbolic functions and are well suited for numerical computations and theoretical analysis. Damage …

Nuclear Radiation Enhancement Of Transistor Forward Gain At High Frequencies, C. A. Goben, Y. P. Han Jan 1970

Nuclear Radiation Enhancement Of Transistor Forward Gain At High Frequencies, C. A. Goben, Y. P. Han

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This investigation has characterized the effects of fast neutron bombardment on a typical n-p-n transistor (2N914) of a common emitter amplifier operating at high-frequencies (>100 MHz) by means of s-parameter measurements from 120 MHz to 350 MHz, inclusive, every 10 MHz. The changes in the four (4) s-parameters and the trends and consequences of neutron bombardment are examined pictorially on graphs. The general effect of fast neutron bombardment is to decrease the magnitude of each s-parameter for frequencies below z. fT (where z = (O/1013)0.1). However, if the device is operating above z fT, the magnitudes of s11 (input …

State Assignment Selection In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Gary K. Maki, James H. Tracey Jan 1970

State Assignment Selection In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Gary K. Maki, James H. Tracey

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Methods already exist for the construction of critical race-free assignments for asynchronous sequential circuits. Some of these methods permit the construction of many assignments for the same flow table. The algorithm presented here consists of two easy to apply tests which select that critical race-free assignment most likely to produce a set of simple next-state equations. The algorithm has been programmed. Copyright © 1970 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

Evaluation Of City And Region Planning Techniques, Charles Clay Miller Jan 1970

Evaluation Of City And Region Planning Techniques, Charles Clay Miller

Masters Theses

"The transportation and community planning effort in the United States has resulted in the expenditure of a great deal of time and money. However, the result of this effort has largely been unusable because of a lack of an effective formalized planning method. this thesis presents summarizations of the planning methods employed in ten plans which are typical of the U.S. Planning Effort. Each of these methods are critiqued in the light of a proposed planning method. The Federal Government has recently required the adoption of a Planning, Programming and Budgeting System (PPBS) in an effort to formalize a scientific …

Analysis And Control Of Noise Produced By Small Pneumatic Tools, Phillip Ray Elam Jan 1970

Analysis And Control Of Noise Produced By Small Pneumatic Tools, Phillip Ray Elam

Masters Theses

"Noise measurements were made near the exhaust of three small pneumatic tools operating under various loads and with various components removed. One-third octave analyses were performed on the noise for identification of noise sources and to determine possible noise reduction techniques. It was determined that the noise spectra consisted of broad band turbulent flow noise plus periodic components at the tool motor blade passage frequency and harmonics of this frequency. One tool, the nut setter, was selected for reverberant field noise analyses and noise reduction studies. Reverberant field measurements indicated that most of the tool noise was transmitted through the …

Computerized Methods For Estimating Heating-Cooling-Ventilating System Usage In All-Electric Buildings, Carl William Glaser

Masters Theses

"This thesis develops a method and a resulting computer program for estimating the energy input required by the heating-cooling-ventilating system of a building. The computer program has the ability to model the ventilating system and all the inefficiencies introduced when the heating system is allowed to fight the cooling system to provide temperature control within the conditioned space. The program also can consider mechanical heat reclaim accurately, making the consideration on a time of need versus a time of occurrence basis. The program is written to utilize input data in rather simplified form. This allows the program to be used …

Fault Detection In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Jeng-Chuan Kau Jan 1970

Fault Detection In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Jeng-Chuan Kau

Masters Theses

"As the asynchronous sequential circuit has become more and more important to digital systems in recent years high reliability and simple maintenance of the circuit is stressed. This paper presents a fault-detection algorithm which will be applicable to most of the practical asynchronous sequential circuits. The asynchronous sequential circuit is treated from the combinatoric point of view. First the minimal set of states, both stable states and unstable states, sufficient to detect all possible faults of the circuit is found from the fault table. Then a test sequence is generated to go through these states. It is assumed that testing …

Effect Of Third Components On Drag Reduction In Aluminum Soap-Hydrocarbon Systems, Kun-Chieh Lee Jan 1970

Effect Of Third Components On Drag Reduction In Aluminum Soap-Hydrocarbon Systems, Kun-Chieh Lee

Masters Theses

"The effect of additives, aging, shear and peptizing agents on the drag reducing abilities of aluminum disoaptoluene solutions prepared at room temperature were studied. Viscosity measurements were used as a primary test to select effective additives. Medium strong organic bases were found to be useful as they speed up the dissolution of slow dissolving aluminum dioctoate soap and form large micelle structures. These peptizers are not effective with aluminum distearate which is very hard to dissolve in toluene at room temperature. Turbulent flow pressure drop measurements at various aging times were made for solutions of 0.1 per cent aluminum dioleate …

Imperfections In The Ag-In System (Alpha-Phase) And Lattice Parameters Of Cadmium Oxide, Prafulla Maganlal Vora Jan 1970

Imperfections In The Ag-In System (Alpha-Phase) And Lattice Parameters Of Cadmium Oxide, Prafulla Maganlal Vora

Masters Theses

"This thesis has been divided into two parts, namely, "Imperfections in the Ag-In System (Alpha-Phase)" and "Lattice Parameters of Cadmium Oxide." Imperfections in the Ag-In System (Alpha-Phase): It can be shown -- as in the case of the Cu-In α solid solutions -- that during quenching from the liquid state, strains are produced by the quenching process and, in addition, vacancies are quenched-in, in the Ag-In α-solid solutions. The number of vacancies present, measured by the decreased density of the alloys, is proportional to the indium content up to the solid-solubility limit. Upon heat treatment of the alloys, the thermal …

Sets of metal specimens of copper, 2024-T4 aluminum, and 304 stainless steel were used. The specimens were cylindrical, axially aligned, and hydraulically loaded. All tests were conducted in an air environment. Pressure applied to the specimens ranged from 50 to 500 psig. Surface roughness of the interfaces varied from 5 to 20 micro inches. The wire mesh separators were of 304 stainless steel in 20, 30, 40, and 50 mesh. Results of the experiments show that: …

Transient Response Of A Vibration Isolation System, Hemendra Shantilal Acharya Jan 1970

Transient Response Of A Vibration Isolation System, Hemendra Shantilal Acharya

Masters Theses

"A practical procedure for investigating the performance of a vibration isolation system under transient conditions is presented. For this investigation, an induction motor with an unbalanced rotor is studied during the period when it accelerates to its operating speed from rest. Using Newton's second law of motion, equations of motion are derived, first neglecting and then considering the effect of "inertia torque". This torque is produced by the inertia force resulting from vertical acceleration of the unbalanced mass. The equations are solved on a digital computer using the Runge-Kutta method of order 4. The results obtained are compared with those …

Measurement Of The Surface Energy Of Rock By The Three-Point Bending Of Notched Beams, John Walter Corwine Jan 1970

Measurement Of The Surface Energy Of Rock By The Three-Point Bending Of Notched Beams, John Walter Corwine

Masters Theses

"In this investigation, the surface energy of a medium-grained igneous rock (Barre granite) was measured by breaking small, notched beams in bending. The technique was adapted from fracture toughness tests that have been used with metals and ceramics. The equations used for the calculation of surface energy were derived from several writers' equations for the stress intensity at the end of a notch in a beam subject to bending. Beam thickness, notch width and mineral occurring at the notch tip were evaluated for their influence on the calculated values of surface energy. The surface energy values obtained were used in …

Vibration Of A Rotating Cantilever Beam With An Independently Rotating Disk On The Free End, Darrell Blaine Crimmins Jan 1970

Vibration Of A Rotating Cantilever Beam With An Independently Rotating Disk On The Free End, Darrell Blaine Crimmins

Masters Theses

"This thesis provides a vibration analysis of a rotating cantilever beam with an independently rotating thin circular disk on the free end. The exact differential equations of the system as defined by classical Bernoulli-Euler beam theory are written using the methods of the calculus of variations. The exact equations are not solved, but two different approximations are found by assuming a cubic polynomial deflection curve and applying the equation of Lagrange. The solutions are restricted to small deflections of the beam and a shaft stiffness which permits a deflection in only a single plane. Nonlinear differential equations result in the …

Failure Of Lined And Unlined Small-Scale Cavities In Rock-Like Materials, Seung-Ki Yang Jan 1970

Failure Of Lined And Unlined Small-Scale Cavities In Rock-Like Materials, Seung-Ki Yang

Masters Theses

"The strain conditions around statically loaded circular openings in rock-like materials and corresponding cavity-wall displacements were determined experimentally with resistance strain gages. The models were fabricated with lined and unlined openings simulating underground tunnels. Tests were performed with models of two different materials in plane stress and plane strain. Rock-like materials were designed and the strain gages were embedded at selected points within each model. The models often failed by tensile splitting through the opening early in the loading cycle causing the strains at certain points to deviate considerably from the theoretical values. Tangential strains on the vertical axis were …

Use Of Waste Glass As Asphaltic Concrete Aggregate, Charles Wayne Foster Jan 1970

Use Of Waste Glass As Asphaltic Concrete Aggregate, Charles Wayne Foster

Masters Theses

"The problem of solid waste disposal increases each year, with the annual growth in quantity of solid waste making the present means of disposal even more inadequate. Recycling of solid waste materials is an increasingly popular approach to the disposal problem. The glass component of solid waste is a very promising candidate for recycling, and this investigation studies the possibility of using waste glass as an aggregate for bituminous concrete mixtures. Objectives of this research were to determine whether a glass-asphalt mixture could be designed to meet the Marshall design criteria specified by The Asphalt Institute, to study the amount …

Multi-Stage Shear Testing Of A Cohesionless Soil, Robert Clyde Gullic Jan 1970

Multi-Stage Shear Testing Of A Cohesionless Soil, Robert Clyde Gullic

Masters Theses

"The multi-stage test is a procedure by which a soil's shear strength parameters can be evaluated by the use of a single sample of the material. The object of the investigation is to evaluate to what extent multi-stage testing can be used on a cohesionless material. Three types of tests, using conventional and multi-stage procedures are evaluated. They are: direct shear/consolidated drained, triaxial compression/consolidated drained and triaxial compression/consolidated undrained shear tests. It was found that multi-stage testing can easily be performed and the shear strength parameter thetaf obtained from these tests are in good agreement with those obtained from …

Parameters Effecting The Dynamic Properties Of A Saturated Cohesive Soil Tested In Cyclical Simple Shear, William Kenneth Andrew V Jan 1970

Parameters Effecting The Dynamic Properties Of A Saturated Cohesive Soil Tested In Cyclical Simple Shear, William Kenneth Andrew V

Masters Theses

"Cyclical simple shear tests were performed on block samples of a remolded clay mixture of 3 parts kaolinite to 1 part of bentonite mixed at 110% water content. The samples had base sizes of 8x8, 4x4, and 2x2 inches square and heights of 1, 2, 4, and 8 inches. The simple shear tests were performed by using a predetermined sinusoidal displacement, at frequencies of 1, 2, and 5 hertz. The shear modulus which was normalized by dividing it by the shear strength, and the hysteretic damping factor which was expressed as the percent of critical damping, were evaluated from a …
