Comparative Study Of Lightweight And Normal Weight Concrete In Flexure, Mohammad Zareh May 1971

Comparative Study Of Lightweight And Normal Weight Concrete In Flexure, Mohammad Zareh

Dissertations and Theses

This investigation represents a comparative study of the flexural behavior of lightweight and normal weight concrete. Both theoretical and experimental moment-curvature characteristics of the tested specimens were used to study the flexural behavior.

A generalized computer program to determine the moment-curvature relationships of a singly reinforced rectangular concrete beam was developed.

For this limited study it was observed that lightweight concrete beams when compared to normal concrete beams achieve comparable moment capacity (about 92% of normal weight concrete) but exhibit higher deflections (about 40% more than normal weight concrete).

Sequences From Nonlinear Feedback Shift Registers., Richard H. Braasch May 1971

Sequences From Nonlinear Feedback Shift Registers., Richard H. Braasch

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

1.1 General Aspects of Shift-Register Generated Sequences

An n-stage register is a device consisting of n consecutive two-state memory units controlled by a clock. At each clock pulse, the state ak (logical 1 or 0) of each memory stage, ak, is shifted to the adjacent stage of higher degree. A shift register may be converted into a code generator through introduction of feedback loops that compute a new shift register state based on the previous state of the register. This feedback shift register principle is illustrated in Figure 1-1.

Static And Dynamic Shear Behavior Of Uniformly Loaded Reinforced Concrete Deep Beams., Robert A. Crist Jr. May 1971

Static And Dynamic Shear Behavior Of Uniformly Loaded Reinforced Concrete Deep Beams., Robert A. Crist Jr.

Civil Engineering ETDs

The objective of this research Kas to develop behavioral equations for reinforced concrete deep beams especially in the realm of shear capacity. A series of static and dynamic beam tests was performed to aid in the development of this objective.

Static testing was completed on nine uniformly loaded reinforced concrete deep beams. Span-to-depth ratios varied from 1.6 to 3.3. Intermediate-grade ASTM A 15 reinforcing steel was used. Nominal concrete strength was 3,750 psi. All beams contained longitudinal tensile reinforcing and no compressive reinforcing. Five beams contained an orthogonal array of web reinforcing coincident with the longitudinal axes of the beams …

The Use Of Graphical Techniques In Construction Management, Varne M. Kimmick May 1971

The Use Of Graphical Techniques In Construction Management, Varne M. Kimmick

Civil Engineering ETDs

The relation and practical uses of graphics in construction management is a study area in which little work, with the exception of the critical path method, has been done. As the subject was begun, it was discovered there was little specific written material on the graphs themselves; therefore, a considerable portion of the thesis was devoted to basic graphics in order to make the discussion relative to construction more meaningful. Chapters I through VII cover the subject of basic graphics. The basic graphics portion was considered essential to the study in order to allow practical use of the work by …

Structural Stability In Earthquake Engineering., Aybars GüRpinar May 1971

Structural Stability In Earthquake Engineering., Aybars GüRpinar

Civil Engineering ETDs

To pate, only special cases of dynamic stability have been solved. In this dissertation, an attempt is made to obtain practical solutions to the stability problem in earthquake engineering.

A column supporting a concentrated mass at the top is treated as a single-degree-of-freedom system. The system is assumed to be linearly e·1astic with viscous damping. It is subjected to both horizontal and vertical random acceleration at the base, which are taken to be a band limited white noise simulating earthquake motions. The objective of this investigation is to find the probability of instability of the system.

Two methods of solution …

Fastener Strength In Diaphragm Braced Members, Amir Simaan, George Winter, Teoman Peköz May 1971

Fastener Strength In Diaphragm Braced Members, Amir Simaan, George Winter, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

SUMMARY In conjunction with research projects on diaphragm-braced members conducted at Cornell University, this investigation deals with the function of the fasteners in the braced system. In these systems, the diaphragm resists the lateral deflections of the braced members, in its plane, by virtue of its shear regidity (Qdr) and its shear strain capacity Yd (as a measure of strength). Considering the system in a slightly deformed shape, compatibility of displacements and forces between the diaphragm and the braced member at their connection locations, implies that the fasteners at these locations are subjected to the action of a system of …

Experimental Installations Of Impact Attenuation Devices, Bruce S. Siria, William M. Seymour, Don L. Cornette, James L. Miller

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The expanding system of limited access, multilane highway facilities in the United States has enhanced traffic service between many varied origins and destinations. As a result, these facilities have not only reduced travel times and travel costs, but have generated additional travel by virtue of their technological splendor. The increasing dominance of multilane highways in terms of percentage of total vehicle miles travelled has produced a revolution in highway engineering philosophy. Higher design speeds, increased lane widths, lateral separation of opposing traffic streams, absence of passing restrictions, and increased traffic capacities were attributes intuitively sought. An ironic result is the …

The purpose of this thesis is to determine feasibility and to investigate some of the problems encountered in making soil moisture measurements using radio wave propagation. The procedure consists of propagating a vertically polarized wave over the earth and measuring the field strength attenuation. A brief summary of present methods of measuring soil moisture is given.

Certain aspects of radio wave propagation theory are discussed, covering such topics as the surface wave, the space wave, the skin depth, and the effect of the dielectric constant on radio wave propagation. Based on this theory, measurement parameters such as frequency, antenna separation, …

Computer Simulation Of Urban Runoff Characteristics Within Salt Lake County, Robert Newman Parnell May 1971

Computer Simulation Of Urban Runoff Characteristics Within Salt Lake County, Robert Newman Parnell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A hybrid computer program is developed to simulate the outflow hydrographs of two urban watersheds located within Salt Lake County, Utah. The gaged outflow of the watersheds provided a checkpoint for comparing the observed and the simulated final outflow hydrographs.

The outflow hydrographs for each subzone of the two watersheds were obtained by abstracting interception, infiltration and depression storage from each subzone hyetograph. The outflow of the subzones were routed to the Jordan River, the final outflow point of the two watersheds. The final hydrographs of the watersheds were combined and compared with the gaged flow.

The uniquenesses of this …

Strain Measurements At Extremely High Temperatures Using Moiré Fringe Techniques., Joseph W. Neudecker Jr. May 1971

Strain Measurements At Extremely High Temperatures Using Moiré Fringe Techniques., Joseph W. Neudecker Jr.

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

A new procedure is described for using the moiré-fringe technique to measure strains in structural materials at temperatures exceeding 1300 °C. The principal factor found to be necessary for successful viewing of moiré patterns at extremely high temperatures is the use of reflected laser light for viewing the strained grid on the material. This factor is extensively discussed and experiments are described in which strain measurements were successfully made on graphite specimens at elevated temperatures. It is concluded that the techniques described constitute a more feasible method of measuring strains at higher temperatures than is possible by any other known …

A Computer Simulation Of A Partial Venous System Of A Human Lower Extremity, David C. Smith May 1971

A Computer Simulation Of A Partial Venous System Of A Human Lower Extremity, David C. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The human body is truly a fascinating and complex creation of our Maker. Because of the complexity and variability, many of its workings were little known until recent years. Some of the more amazing facts of the circulatory system follow. If the individual blood vessels of a single adult, i.e., artery, arteriole capillary, venule and vein, were laid end to end, they would extend more than 60,000 miles. For the average adult, the heart beats 70 times per minute; for the well-conditioned athlete, 50-60 beats per minute; and for the extraordinary athlete, as few as 37 times per minute. The …

Transient Convective Heat Transfer Coefficient For Injection Into Rigid Vessel, James Edward Steiger

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop and demonstrate a method for experimentally determining the convective heat transfer in a rigid vessel while air was being injected. The heat transfer took place between the air in the pressurized vessel and the surrounding walls which were maintained at a temperature of 32 F. with a circulating ice water bath. The study considers the effects of injection geometry and injection flow rate on the heat transfer process. The problem of heat transfer after injection has been considered by Means (1), and was responsible for establishing this study. The experimental technique used …

Conduction Error In Thermocouples Embedded In Low Conductivity Material, Tumkur G. Nagaraju May 1971

Conduction Error In Thermocouples Embedded In Low Conductivity Material, Tumkur G. Nagaraju

Theses and Dissertations

Thermocouples are generally used as devices to determine the internal temperature of any material. The purpose of the temperature measuring device is to measure the temperature which would exist at some known location if the device were not present. The thermocouples are embedded in the material in order to study the temperature-time history of the point of location. The presence of the thermocouple induces error in the temperature measured. This error becomes significant if heat is conducted into or away from the point of measurement by the sensor itself, or if the sensor insulates the point. This would result from …

Hydraulics Of Waste Stabilization Ponds And Its Influence On Treatment Efficiency, Kenneth A. Mangelson May 1971

Hydraulics Of Waste Stabilization Ponds And Its Influence On Treatment Efficiency, Kenneth A. Mangelson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The treatment efficiency of waste stabilization ponds depends on many factors, the most important of which are generally presumed to be the biological factors such as the type of waste and the organic loading. However, the biological activity in a pond is greatly influenced by the environmental conditions of temperature, wind, sunlight, and the hydraulic flow patterns. In the past little attention has been given to the hydraulic characteristics of waste stabilization ponds. Specifically, little consideration has been given to the gross flow patterns within stabilization ponds as affected by the shape of the pond or lagoon, the presence of …

Phosphorus Distribution In The Bottom Sediments Of Hyrum Reservoir, Kirk L. Schmalz May 1971

Phosphorus Distribution In The Bottom Sediments Of Hyrum Reservoir, Kirk L. Schmalz

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The distribution of phosphorus in the sediment of Hyrum Reservoir was studied by collecting and analyzing 84 sediment samples for total, inorganic, organic, and water-soluble phosphorus.

Sample locations were mapped by triangulation and sediment phosphorus distribution maps were made. Sediment analysis showed average total phosphorus content of 755 micrograms per gram, with organic phosphorus composing approximately 97 percent of total phosphorus.

Sediment samples showed variability in phosphorus content which precluded identification of point sources of phosphorus input to the reservoir. Several areas of comparatively higher phosphorus content in the sediments were shown with isopleth maps.

An estimate of the extent …

A Statistical Theory Of Avalanche Breakdown In Silicon, Terence Vincent Sewards Apr 1971

A Statistical Theory Of Avalanche Breakdown In Silicon, Terence Vincent Sewards

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A statistical theory of avalanche breakdown in silicon is presented, based on the conventional Boltzmann transport equation. The scattering mechanisms considered are impact ionization (electron-hole pair production), phonon emission and absorption, thermal generation and recombination. The resultant critical field is found to depend on the recombination statistics, which were ignored in previous theories of avalanche breakdown. The theoretical temperature dependence is compared with the temperature dependence of the breakdown voltages of three conunercial diodes.

Experimental Concrete Pavement Containing Fly-Ash Admixtures [1971], James R. Philpot

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The report enclosed is somewhat routine inasmuch as it documents a repeat of a portion of an earlier experimental project. The previous project was on Poplar Level Road; our final report was dated July 1966 (KYHPR-64-1). Special Provision No. 70 was used also on the Jefferson Freeway project. However, there was no "control section" involved in the current project. The Jefferson Freeway project was authorized by the BPR under P.P.M. 60-2 only (now PPM 20-6.3).

The most significant findings from both projects concern the water requirements the concrete containing the fly-ash admixture. Whereas laboratory tests indicated reasonable expectations of a …

An Experimental Investigation Of The Vortex Sink Rate Sensors, Nelson L. Lu Apr 1971

An Experimental Investigation Of The Vortex Sink Rate Sensors, Nelson L. Lu

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The vortex sink rate sensor device consists basically of an ideal sink flow between two coaxial disks. A sink tube was located at the center of one disk. The vortex was created by the rotation of the unit about its axis of symmetry. Five inch and 10 inch diameter of porous couplers were used for the air chamber here in this investigation. Several slenderness parameters, i.e., the ratio of the sink tube diameter to the height of the air chamber ro/n were conducted. Two probes were used to measure the static pressure and stagnation pressure respectively at various positions …

A Theoretical And Experimental Study Of The Mechanism Of Axoplasmic Convection In Nerve Fibers Driven By Peristaltic Surface Waves, Robert John Biondi Mar 1971

A Theoretical And Experimental Study Of The Mechanism Of Axoplasmic Convection In Nerve Fibers Driven By Peristaltic Surface Waves, Robert John Biondi

Dissertations

In the study of cell biology, investigators have found that substances which are produced within the cell nucleus are sometimes found throughout the cell at points distant from the site of production. In the case of nerve cells (neurons), this is particularly dramatic because of the unusual elongated geometry of these cells.

A neuron possesses a cylindrical tubular extension called an "axon" or "axis cylinder" which is characterized by a large length-to-diameter ratio (103-106). The existence of a continuous proximo-distal flow of axoplasm within these cylindrical axons has now been demonstrated by numerous investigators. In …
