Lumped parameter modeling using finite differencing, form the basis for a C language simulation of a thermal system. The study of the earth-stationed satellite terminal includes an introduction to the system, derivation of the governing equation, development of a simulation, and a comparison of the results to empirical data.

The analysis is undertaken with emphasis on the worst-case thermal environment, and with determination of the cooling loads and transient response as primary goals. Comparing the predicted cooling loads to empirical data, and previous analyses, indicates an accurate simulation has been constructed. The computer models are offered as an alternative method …

The design of an I/O Controller capable of processing data in real time in a tactical training simulator is presented. The controller consists of two microprocessor systems that communicate with peripherals by means of programmed I/O, and with the host computer by Direct Memory Access (DMA) and a serial RS232 link. In recent years the United States Navy has concentrated most of its Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) research and development efforts toward passive sonar. Its ability to locate enemy targets without being detected gives the passive sonar system a supreme strategic advantage over its active counterpart. One aspect of passive sonar signal processing is the time delay estimation of an underwater acoustic wavefront. From this estimation the location and velocity of the radiating source (target) can then be determined. This report compares two popular methods of estimating time delay utilizing computer simulations of each: the cross correlator and the beamformer.

A method has been developed for solving practical problems which can be expressed in terms of physical geometry. These problems often involve combining directional information observed by remotely located sensors reported in their own respective local coordinate systems. To transform this information into a common coordinate system, the attitude of the sensors must be measured with respect to this common coordinate system.

The purpose of this report is to investigate the processing of tracking data for acoustic targets. The programs developed for two- and three- dimensional space calculate the target's position via "hyperbolic-fix" navigation (geometric) considerations using the Newton-Raphson algorithm. The computer programs and the tracking solution approach contained herein is based on knowledge of only the sensors' locations and the relative time-difference at which a target's referenced, singular, acoustic pressure wavefronts are received at the sensors. Omnidirectional sensors are found to be sufficient for the two-dimensional space tracking problem. However, it is found that the three-space problem required usage of directional …

A Preliminary Investigation Of Physical-Chemical Treatment Of Slagging Gasifier Aqueous Effluent, Kirk B. Hird

The feasibility of treating slagging gasifier wastewater by physical-chemical means was studied. Pretreatment and treatment flow schemes were developed by using batch and continuous tests. Results were based mainly on wastewater residual total organic carbon (TOC). A treatment facility was designed and economically evaluated.

It was found that slagging gasifier wastewater is treatable by physical-chemical means using activated carbon and chemical oxidation as the two principal treatment steps. A pretreatment scheme consisting of lime addition, ammonia stripping, and recarbonation-coagu- lation was found to sufficiently purify the raw gasifier liquor so that activated carbon adsorption and chemical oxidation could be applied …

The generation and maintenance of feasible schedules for Navy training courses are labor intensive throughout the Naval Education and Training Command. The major constraints affecting this scheduling are planned input requirements and the suitability/availability of instructors, equipment, and facilities. A simple method for generating digital terrain surfaces as a function of only the terrain standard deviation is presented. This is accomplished by fitting a postulated autocorrelation model to actual terrain data. Observed relations between model parameters are used to obtain a one-parameter model. For an oscillator that is periodically swept in frequency between some upper and lower bound, the output amplitude may easily be made constant and therefore known with a high degree of certainty. The instantaneous frequency exists only at a point in time and therefore possesses a zero probability of existing at any point. This thesis deals with the development of a method for interchanging the probability density functions of amplitude and frequency so that the latter becomes known with certainty while the former is known only to the extent that it is within a certain range.

This Research Report presents some of the equations of underwater acoustics that relate to the signal excess noise received by a transducer. The basic structural equation is developed, as are defining equations for each term in that equation. An analysis is performed utilizing typical values to ascertain if the elements of the structural equation can be simplified. Results delineate that several terms of that equation can be neglected while maintaining a relative high degree of accuracy.

Military War Gaming has developed from the chess-like games to the elaborate computer simulations of today, using high-speed, general-purpose, digital computers. This Research Report will briefly review modern war-game developments with emphasis on real-time training systems. The application of system dynamics techniques developed by Jay W. Forrester to war-game modeling is explored. A simple destroyer versus submarine model is developed. Results indicate that the system dynamics modeling technique is a powerful and effective tool. However, the Dynamo language could be substantially improved by a more powerful logical statement capability.
