Excitation Of Source Electromagnetic Waves At Microwave Frequencies Using Optical Techniques, M. Davarpanah Jan 1975

Excitation Of Source Electromagnetic Waves At Microwave Frequencies Using Optical Techniques, M. Davarpanah

Doctoral Dissertations

"The coupling efficiencies for the excitation of surface electromagnetic waves (SEW} for both the prism and the grating techniques have been studied experimentally in the microwave frequency range. The grating experiments included studies of the SEW coupling efficiencies as functions of the frequency, the angle of incidence, the grating constant, the number of grating bars, and the position of the grating bar at which the maximum radiation field of the antenna was aimed. For the prism coupling technique, the coupling efficiency was studied as functions of the angle of incidence, the aiming point of the transmitting antenna on the prism …

Design And Analysis Of An Instrument System For Rheological Testing Of Whole Blood Samples, Robert Rimvydas Sinusas Dec 1974

Design And Analysis Of An Instrument System For Rheological Testing Of Whole Blood Samples, Robert Rimvydas Sinusas

Dissertations

The dissertation covers the conceptual design of a rheometer for testing whole blood samples through to the clotting state. While the design aims at increased measurement accuracy, the design employs well known technologies and available components.

The main reason for preoccupation with blood testing is that recent investigations have indicated that physiological disorders can be correlated with rheological properties of blood. The pursuit of an improved means of correlation is initiated with a survey of the rheological properties of blood. The relevance of these blood properties is then discussed. From this discussion a broader blood model is developed as a …

Optimal Highway Safety Improvement Investments By Dynamic Programming [Dec. 1974], Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent, Jesse G. Mayes, Charles V. Zegeer Dec 1974

Optimal Highway Safety Improvement Investments By Dynamic Programming [Dec. 1974], Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent, Jesse G. Mayes, Charles V. Zegeer

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The process of determining which projects to implement under a given budget, and which to defer until later, is central to the planning and management of highway systems. With a limited budget for construction, maintenance, and safety improvements, investments which will produce the optimal benefits must be chosen. This is often impossible to accomplish without the aid of a computer because of the complexity of the problem. Dynamic programming has been tested and verified as an efficient method for selecting priority projects to derive maximum benefits. The applicability of dynamic programming to the safety improvement program is demonstrated in this …

Accidents On Rural Interstate And Parkway Roads And Their Relation To Pavement Friction, Rolands L. Rizenbergs, James L. Burchett, John A. Deacon, Cass T. Napier

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Friction measurements were made with a skid trailer at 70 mph (31 m/s) on 770 miles (1240 km) of rural, four-lane, controlled-access routes on the interstate and parkway systems in Kentucky. Each construction project was treated as a test section. Accident experience, friction measurements, and traffic volumes were obtained for each. Various relationships between wet-weather accidents and skid resistance were analyzed. Averaging methods were used as a means of developing trends and minimizing scatter. A moving average for progressively-ordered sets of five test sections yielded more definite results. The expression of accident occurrence which correlated best with skid and slip …

Rock Evaluation For Engineered Facilities, D. J. Hagerty, Robert C. Deen, M. W. Palmer, C. D. Tockstein

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The need for comprehensive information on the characteristics and behavior of earth materials has been recognized for many years, perhaps for as long as significant construction has taken place in and on the surface of the earth. In recent years, however, the magnitude and complexity of engineered construction has greatly increased, resulting in a corresponding increase in the need for information on the engineering properties of soil and rock materials, Direct testing of soil and rock can be utilized to furnish necessary information. However, both field and laboratory testing can be extremely expensive, particularly where testing must include applications of …

Evaluation Of Herington General Integral Test For Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium Data, Raja Gopal Nori Sep 1974

Evaluation Of Herington General Integral Test For Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium Data, Raja Gopal Nori

Theses

A new set of general integral tests for the thermodynamic consistency of isothermal and isobaric equilibrium data of binary systems was proposed by E.F.G. Herington.

The systems Benzene-Cyclohexane and Benzene-n-Propanol were examined using Herington integral test-. The data used included sets of data known to be in error. One set was, in effect, at true vapor-liquid equilibrium (the data of literature) but the other data was obtained when the system was inadequately insulated and heated.

Heringtan test showed significantly different estimates for heats of mixing for the cases involved. The best data showed heats of mixing near the theoratical values. …

It is Believed that, by Removing Much of the Traditionally …

Heating The 9th Street Interchange, Louisville, Ky, James H. Havens Sep 1974

Heating The 9th Street Interchange, Louisville, Ky, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The 9th Street interchange, I 64-2(87)3, was first conceived about 1959. Preliminary design studies began in the early 1960's. Design began about 1964. The idea of heating the ramps was first considered in the early 1960's but was not pursued intently until the final design stage (about 1968). As the design progressed, it became more and more evident that snowing and icing conditions could prevent otherwise normal passage of traffic up and down the ramps. At one point on the structure, a combination of superelevation and grade would produce a 6 1/2 percent slope. The highest ramp or "fly over" …

A Rock Classification Schema, Robert C. Deen, C. D. Tockstein, M. W. Palmer Sep 1974

A Rock Classification Schema, Robert C. Deen, C. D. Tockstein, M. W. Palmer

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The need for engineering data on earth materials for use in site selection, design, construction, and maintenance of major engineering structures is generally accepted. Probably the most pressing need is for such data to use in preliminary considerations of site selection and design alternatives. Maps and(or) surveys giving the areal distribution of earth materials and their characteristics, together with topographic maps available for many areas, would permit much preliminary work on engineering structures to be done without the engineer ever having to leave his office.

The Effect Of Unreinforced Cutouts On The Buckling Of Thin Conical Shells Loaded By Central Axial Compression, Garla Arjuna Jul 1974

The Effect Of Unreinforced Cutouts On The Buckling Of Thin Conical Shells Loaded By Central Axial Compression, Garla Arjuna

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Analytical trends for the linear bifurcation buckling of thin isotropic right-circular-conical shells with unreinforced cutouts are investigated. Clamped, constant-thickness conical shells with homogeneous, isotropical material properties are analyzed for uniform axial compression. The buck ling loads are obtained by the use of the STAGS (Structural Analysis of General Shells) computer program which is based on a finite difference numerical approach. Variables defining the geometry of the cutout and the cone are nondimensionalized and the relationship between the nondimensional buckling load and nondimensional cutout parameter is established. A range of the cutout sizes is investigated for which linear bifurcation buckling results …

Dynamics Of Explosion Remnants In Earth-Orbits, Joseph T. Fuss Jul 1974

Dynamics Of Explosion Remnants In Earth-Orbits, Joseph T. Fuss

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Explosions in space produce particles that are hazardous to space vehicles. Some of these particles are not trackable and their locations must be predicted by dynamical methods.

This investigation sheds light on three different, areas, First, ignoring perturbations, the characteristics of a three dimensional envelope outlined by the sum of individual particle orbits is determined, Second, the distribution of the particles is found as a function of time, Finally, the movement, of the body via secular perturbations is investigated. Magnitudes of the explosion, the point of. detonation in the parent satellite's orbit, and the radius of perigee of the parent …

Design Of I-Shaped Beams And Columns With Diaphragm Bracing, S. J. Errera, T. V. S. R. Apparao Jul 1974

Design Of I-Shaped Beams And Columns With Diaphragm Bracing, S. J. Errera, T. V. S. R. Apparao

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

Cold-formed steel panels often are used as wall sheathing, roof decking or floor decking in steel framed buildings or pre-engineered metal buildings. Diaphragms formed by interconnecting these panels have considerable in-plane shear resistance, and can be utilized as bracing against buckling for individual members of a steel frame. For wall columns the diaphragm may be either directly attached or connected to girts which in turn are connected to the columns. A procedure is presented for the design of I-section beams and columns with diaphragm or diaphragm-girt bracing. The procedure is based on the ultimate load capacity of fully braced members, …

Rheo-Optical Properties Of Polyisobutylene, Russell B. Biss Jun 1974

Rheo-Optical Properties Of Polyisobutylene, Russell B. Biss

Theses

This study presents quantitative experimental data on the various stress-optical characteristics of polymer liquids, specifically, polyisobutylene. Through the use of a concentric cylinder rheogoniometer and a rotational viscometer, the temperature effects of a newtonian polyisobutylene liquid. was studied and was found to have a stress-optical coefficient independent of shear stress and minor temperature changes. The experiments confirm that the birefringence is a known function of the extinction angle and the shear stress. Various polyisobutylene liquids were used in a simple flow device to observe the birefringence in the 1-3 plane and the 2-3 plane. The results indicate that the 1-3 …

A Study Of An Adiabatic Tubular Reactor For The Multiple Chlorination Of Methane, Richard L. Braun Jun 1974

A Study Of An Adiabatic Tubular Reactor For The Multiple Chlorination Of Methane, Richard L. Braun

Theses

A computer program has been developed which simulates the multiple chlorination of methane in an adiabatic, tubular reactor. Euler's method is used to approximate the solutions of the programs differential equations.

The program is designed to determine the amount of an inert diluent required in the feed stream to attain some specified conversion of methane in a safe and efficient temperature range. Particular emphasis is put on determining the amount of diluent required to attain 98% conversion of methane at an outlet temperature of 723°K. The program also determines the reactor volume necessary to achieve the specified conversion, and the …

Solvents Screening For Hydrocarbons Separation Of Close Molar Volumes, Dilip K. Kapasi Jun 1974

Solvents Screening For Hydrocarbons Separation Of Close Molar Volumes, Dilip K. Kapasi

Theses

The approximate physical model for solute-solvent inter?actions presented by J, M, Prausnitz and R, Anderson1 is briefly discussed, Applicability of Weimer, Prausnitz3 and Helpinstill, Van Winkle7 models is investigated using experimental values of activity coefficients for C5 hydrocarbons in 13 solvents including one nonpolar and 12 polar solvents. Independent correlations, based on our experimental values at 45°C for normal and isopentane have been developed. Although the required thermodynamic properties are obtained through a comparative analysis of all the available and estimated methods, dependable values of activity coefficients for Isopentane and 1-Pentene could not be obtained through …

Electronic Color Scanners, Kenneth Francis Hird Jun 1974

Electronic Color Scanners, Kenneth Francis Hird

Graduate Research Papers

Process color photography has been continually developing for many years. In fact, color printing techniques are still benefiting, through additional sophisticated requirements, and from a discovery made about 300 years ago. At that time Sir Isaac Newton, British scientist, mathematician • and philosopher, placed a glass prism in the path of a narrow beam of sunlight entering his room through a pinhole in an opaque window shade. He determined that ordinary white light is a mixture of colored lights.

Unfortunately, in practice, ideal pigments for three-color inks do not exist and this impasse greatly complicates the job for the photo-processor. …

Shear Strength Of Cohesive Soils And Friction Sleeve Resistance, Vincent P. Drnevich, C. Thomas Gorman, Tommy C. Hopkins Jun 1974

Shear Strength Of Cohesive Soils And Friction Sleeve Resistance, Vincent P. Drnevich, C. Thomas Gorman, Tommy C. Hopkins

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Cone penetrations tests were performed on the silty clays of Kentucky, U.S.A., using a boring rig to push the Dutch, friction sleeve, cone penetrometer. Thin-walled tube samples were taken from nearby boreholes. For the first four sites, unconfined compression tests and unconsolidated-undrained triaxial test were performed on the samples. For the last four sites, consolidated-undrained triaxial tests were performed on the samples. A procedure for estimating in situ shear strength from triaxial test stress paths was developed.

Small rock fragments in these residual soils caused erratic cone resistance at many locations. As a result, the friction sleeve resistance provided the …

Design For A Developing Consortium, Henry A. Mauermeyer May 1974

Design For A Developing Consortium, Henry A. Mauermeyer

Theses

The number of consortia in American higher education expanded rapidly from only ten in 1960 to eighty in 1973. Many do not have an organized method of developing interinstitutional cooperation, structuring their internal management, or preparing to meet future expansion.

The design of an organizational process appropriate to consortia in general has been developed in this thesis. The design is based on an analysis of various materials: (1) literature on the consortium movement; (2) data gathered from a nationwide survey conducted by the author; (3) visits with directors of consortia and experts in the consortium field; (4) actual working experience …

An Experimental Study Of The Separation Of Multicomponent Mixtures Via Thermal Parametric Pumping, Wayne Weywen Lin May 1974

An Experimental Study Of The Separation Of Multicomponent Mixtures Via Thermal Parametric Pumping, Wayne Weywen Lin

Theses

A thermal continuous parametric pump for separating multi-component mixtures was experimentally investigated using the model system toluene-aniline-n-heptane on silica gel adsorbent. A simple method for predicting separations is presented and is found to be in good agreement with the experimental results. The method, based on an equilibrium theory, is under the assumption that a multicomponent mixture contains a series of pseudo-binary systems, each system consisting of one of the solutes as one component and the common inert solvent as the other component.

Coal And Its Derivatives As An Energy Resource, W. G. Stockton Apr 1974

Coal And Its Derivatives As An Energy Resource, W. G. Stockton

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

April 25, 1974

Events of the last few months, it seems, have somewhat altered the public countenance of the coal industry. These events, I am sure, are the generating factors focusing interest on our industry currently, and I suspect they account for my invitation to address this distinguished group of engineering students today on the subject of coal in this nation's energy outlook.

Coal Mining is not a new industry - - it has been around a long, long time. A surprising number of people, though, have never seen any coal; they are not aware of the existence of the …

Energy From Biochemical Sources, G. J. Fennewald, D. L. Million, Efton Park, J. L. Gaddy Apr 1974

Energy From Biochemical Sources, G. J. Fennewald, D. L. Million, Efton Park, J. L. Gaddy

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

As available energy reserves decline, renewable sources must be utilized. Organic matter, grown agriculturally, represents a renewable energy source, which is readily available. This paper reviews the methods by which organic matter can be converted to energy sources by biochemical processes. The economics of conversion of agricultural crops and byproducts to alcohols by fermentation and conversion of these agricultural materials to methane by anaerobic digestion are examined. Projections of the potential of this energy source are quite promising.

Energy Saving Projects Recently Completed At A Large Petroleum Refinery, J. A. Marshall, A. D. Kiehne

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

A significant reduction in energy consumption per barrel of crude oil processed has been effected at Shell Oil's Wood River, Illinois, Refinery during the past two years. Some of the projects which have resulted in reduced energy consumption are:

1. Improved furnace efficiency through closer surveillance and through installation of optimizing controllers on certain furnaces.

2. Lowered reflux-to-feed ratios on certain fractionating columns following reoptimization of operating conditions with current fuel values.

3. Additional heat exchangers purchased and installed on plants originally designed and optimized at lower fuel values.

This paper discusses examples of each of the above projects and …

Oil Spill Containment And Removal In Arctic Ecosystems, Wilfred R. Mcleod, Diana L. Mcleod Apr 1974

Oil Spill Containment And Removal In Arctic Ecosystems, Wilfred R. Mcleod, Diana L. Mcleod

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Statistics on 16 arctic and subarctic oil spills, their locations, the amount of oil spilled, combatant schemes used, and causes for the spills were culled from the literature. This information has been used to analyze the effectiveness of available chemical, mechanical, and destructive means of oil recovery or disposal under arctic and subarctic conditions.

The choice of the best cleanup procedures to follow in any particular instance is clouded by a number of variables and must be weighed against such considerations as wind, sea, and ice conditions, properties of the oil, and effects of chemicals on marine and wildlife. Access …
