Tanzania Journal of Science

The trace amounts of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide in raw biogas lower its calorific value, cause corrosion and make it hard to compress biogas into the cylinder. Raw biogas was obtainedfrom anaerobic digestion of cow dung and market wastes. The gas was stored in tubes or urine bagbefore upgrading. Natural zeolite rocks, maize cobs, steel wire, desulphurizer, and worn-out tyreswere used as the upgrade materials. The composition of biogas was recorded before and afterupgrading using a GP180 portable biogas analyzer from Henan, China. The measured level of rawbiogas was 0.0227% H2S, >20% CO2 and 52-56% CH4. The most efficient upgrade …

Investigation Of Buoyancy-Driven Convection In Non-Axisymmetric Evaporating Droplets Confined On Hollow Micropillars, De Dong

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Sessile droplet evaporation is ubiquitous in natural and industrial processes, including mammal perspiration, transpiration by plants, and industrial spray cooling. Although extensive evaporation-related research has examined convection effects inside droplets, most studies have been based on hemispherical droplets. Hence the underlying mechanisms of evaporation from non-axisymmetric droplets are not well understood. Here, we investigate the mechanisms of evaporation from non-axisymmetric droplets with sizes ranging from 100 μm to 8 mm. An experimentally validated finite element model simulates different transport mechanisms during evaporation. For non-axisymmetric droplets larger than 4 mm, we observe a non-uniform recirculation pattern in the azimuthal direction, leading …

Use Of Biomimicry Design Approach In Constructing Sustainable Resilient Structures (Case Study: Port Of Beirut), Farouk Bader, Marwan Halabi, Hiba Mohsen, Maged Youssef

BAU Journal - Creative Sustainable Development

Resiliency is not the same as sustainability, nor its substitute, but definitely the two concepts complement each other’s. Sustainability is the avoidance of depletion of natural resources to maintain ecological balance whereas resiliency is to recover, adapt and keep going in the face of setbacks. While designing with green approach is important but what will happen to leed points if the building becomes uninhabitable due to disasters, that’s where resiliency comes into play. The 2019 statistics showed that natural disasters accounted for 133 billion dollars losses and manmade ones accounted for other 7 billion in addition to 11,755 people worldwide …

Integrating Vibratory Membrane-Based Water Recovery Systems For Sustainable Food And Beverage Production, Michael Vincent O. Laurio

Theses and Dissertations

A vibratory nanofiltration (NF) system was investigated for the preconcentration of coffee extracts for soluble coffee production. The simulated coffee extracts studied contained mostly suspended and colloidal organic components that, although were effectively rejected by the NF membrane (>99% turbidity rejection), affected the vibratory NF performance. The vibratory NF operation improved permeate flux, rejection efficiencies, and reduced flux decline from those observed in crossflow (CF) operation. Further, the effects of applied transmembrane pressure (TMP) and vibrational frequency (F) at corresponding displacement (d) were investigated and modeled. A semi-empirical resistance-in-series model was employed to characterize the mass transfer mechanism, osmotic …

Animals are incredibly good at adapting to changes in their environment, a trait envied by most roboticists. Many animals use different gaits to seamlessly transition between land and water and move through non-uniform terrains. In addition to adjusting to changes in their environment, animals can adjust their locomotion to deal with missing or regenerating limbs. Salamanders are an amphibious group of animals that can regenerate limbs, tails, and even parts of the spinal cord in some species. After the loss of a limb, the salamander successfully adjusts to constantly changing morphology as it regenerates the missing part. This quality is …

One major environmental challenge facing humankind is the constantly increasing pollution of water and soil resources on a global scale. The substances that cause such pollution arise primarily from human-made wastes, including agricultural and industrial wastes, household garbage, oil spills, and other toxic materials. The spatiotemporal distribution of these polluting substances in soil and water systems is determined by an interplay of many factors such as physicochemical properties of pollutants, soil grain properties and structure, fluid flow chemistry and velocity, biological activity, and other environmental factors (temperature, precipitation). In this issue, we have collected a series of articles that advance …

Three-Dimensional Shape Analysis Of Peripapillary Retinal Pigment Epithelium-Basement Membrane Layer Based On Oct Radial Images, Junfei Tong, Pengfei Dong, Sachin Kedar, Deepta Ghate, Linxia Gu

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The peripapillary retinal pigment epithelium-basement membrane (ppRPE/BM) layer angle was recently proposed as a potential index for estimating intracranial pressure noninvasively. However, the ppRPE/BM layer angle, measured from the optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans, varied across the radial directions of the optic disc. This made the ppRPE/BM layer angle difficult to be utilized in its full potential. In this study, we developed a mathematical model to quantify the ppRPE/BM layer angles across radial scans in relation to the ppRPE/BM 3D morphology in terms of its 3D angle and scanning tilt angles. Results showed that the variations of the ppRPE/BM layer …

Dye molecules that absorb light in the visible region are key components in many applications, including organic photovoltaics, biological fluorescent labeling, super-resolution microscopy, and energy transport. One family of dyes, known as squaraines, has received considerable attention recently due to their favorable electronic and photophysical properties. In addition, these dyes have a strong propensity for aggregation, which results in emergent materials properties, such as exciton delocalization. This will be of benefit in charge separation and energy transport along with fundamental studies in quantum information. Given the high structural tunability of squaraine dyes, it is possible that exciton delocalization could be …

Energy-Based Orbital Stabilization Of Underactuated Systems Using Impulse Controlled Poincaré Maps, Nilay Kant, Ranjan Mukherjee May 2021

Energy-Based Orbital Stabilization Of Underactuated Systems Using Impulse Controlled Poincaré Maps, Nilay Kant, Ranjan Mukherjee

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The problem of energy-based orbital stabilization of underactuated mechanical systems with one passive degree-of-freedom is addressed. The orbit is a manifold where the active generalized coordinates are fixed, and the total mechanical energy is equal to some desired value. A hybrid control strategy comprised of continuous and intermittent impulsive inputs is presented. The continuous controller is designed using partial feedback inearization to converge the active generalized coordinates to their desired values. The choice of desired energy characterizes a unique orbit which is stable but not asymptotically stable. To stabilize the desired orbit, a Poincaré section is constructed at a fixed …

Sensitivity-Enhanced Microwave-Photonic Optical Fiber Interferometry Based On The Vernier Effect, Chen Zhu, Jie Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes optical carrier microwave interferometry (OCMI)-based optical fiber interferometers for sensing applications with improved measurement sensitivity with the assistance of the Vernier effect. Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPIs) are employed in the proof of concept. A single-FPI-OCMI system is first demonstrated for measurements of variations of temperatures by tracking the spectral shift of the interferogram in microwave domain. By cascading two FPIs with slightly different optical lengths, the Vernier effect is generated in the magnitude spectrum of the system with a typical amplitude-modulated signal. By tracking the shift of the envelope signal, temperature measurements are experimentally demonstrated with greatly enhanced …
