Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Ion Transport Through Electrically Stressed Biological Membranes, Federica Castellani Jul 2021

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Ion Transport Through Electrically Stressed Biological Membranes, Federica Castellani

Biomedical Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The cell membrane is a selectively permeable barrier that controls the transport of ions, molecules, and other materials into and out of a cell. The manipulation of the cell membrane permeability is the basis for several biotechnological and biomedical applications, including electroporation. Electroporation (or electropermeabilization) occurs when the application of an external electric pulse causes water intrusion into the membrane interior and the formation of conductive transmembrane electropores. These electropores allow drugs, genetic material, and other normally impermeant molecules to enter a cell. Despite years of study, the complex mechanisms underlying this process are still not well understood. Molecular dynamics …

Modeling Interactions In Concentrated Ceramic Suspensions Under Ac Electric Field, Naga Bharath Gundrati Jul 2021

Modeling Interactions In Concentrated Ceramic Suspensions Under Ac Electric Field, Naga Bharath Gundrati

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Colloidal processing of ceramics manipulates the interaction forces using additives or external energy field between the suspending particles to fabricate complex structures. Under AC electric field, mutual dielectrophoretic (DEP) forces between particles create particle chaining. Dielectrophoresis (DEP) is adopted to control ceramic particles in the colloidal suspension, which can benefit from employing DEP forces to externally control the fabrication of ceramic materials with desired porosity and hierarchical structure. To this end, it is crucial to understand the interactions between ceramic particles in aqueous media and AC electric field. The dynamic interactions of ceramic particles under AC electric field are modelled …

Efficient Yet Robust Privacy For Video Streaming, Luke Cranfill, Junggab Son

Master of Science in Computer Science Theses

MPEG-DASH is a video streaming standard that outlines protocols for sending audio and video content from a server to a client over HTTP. The standard has been widely utilized by the video streaming industry. However, it creates an opportunity for an adversary to invade users’ privacy. While a user is watching a video, information is leaked in the form of meta-data, the size and time that the server sent data to the user. This information is not protected by encryption and can be used to create a fingerprint for a video. Once the fingerprint is created, the adversary can use …

Impact Of Irrigation Technologies On Withdrawals And Consumptive Use Of Water, Eric Wilkening, Derek M. Heeren, Douglas R. Hallum, Jennifer Schellpeper, Derrel Martin

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Developments in irrigation technologies have subsequently led to increases in irrigation application efficiency, including conversion from surface to sprinkler irrigation, variable rate irrigation (VRI), and low energy precision application. However, while these increases in application efficiency may reduce water withdrawals and/or diversions (from groundwater or surface water), they may not necessarily translate to additional water being available for future or downstream use. Consumptive use of water, water consumed and not returned to the local or sub-regional watershed, is not necessarily impacted by increased application efficiency, but is an important metric in conserving water for other uses. One recent irrigation technology …

Mechanisms Of Spontaneous Curvature Inversion In Compressed Graphene Ripples For Energy Harvesting Applications Via Molecular Dynamics Simulations, James M. Mangum, Ferdinand Harerimana, Millicent N. Gikunda, Paul M. Thibado

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Electrically conductive, highly flexible graphene membranes hold great promise for harvesting energy from ambient vibrations. For this study, we built numerous three-dimensional graphene ripples, with each featuring a different amount of compression, and performed molecular dynamics simulations at elevated temperatures. These ripples have a convex cosine shape, then spontaneously invert their curvature to concave. The average time between inversion events increases with compression. We use this to determine how the energy barrier height depends on strain. A typical convex-to-concave curvature inversion process begins when the ripple’s maximum shifts sideways from the normal central position toward the fixed outer edge. The …
