Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a subpopulation of cells that can initiate, self-renew, and sustain tumor growth. CSCs are responsible for tumor metastasis, recurrence, and drug resistance in cancer therapy. CSCs reside within a niche maintained by multiple unique factors in the microenvironment. These factors include hypoxia, excessive levels of angiogenesis, a change of mitochondrial activity from aerobic aspiration to aerobic glycolysis, an upregulated expression of CSC biomarkers and stem cell signaling, and an elevated synthesis of the cytochromes P450 family of enzymes responsible for drug clearance. Antibodies and ligands targeting the unique factors that maintain the niche are utilized …

Secure Vlsi Hardware Design Against Intellectual Property (Ip) Theft And Cryptographic Vulnerabilities, Matthew Dean Lewandowski
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Over the last two decades or so, VLSI hardware is increasingly subject to sophisticated attacks on both the supply chain and design fronts. There is no explicit trust that the manufacturers/providers are not producing counterfeit designs or that cryptographic algorithms we know to be secure in software are also secure in hardware. The novelty and key contributions of this work are as follows: 1) a continually refined method for Intellectual Property (IP) Protection that provides an approach for verification of IP ownership, 2) demonstrate how to break the PRESENT-80 cryptographic algorithm with significantly limited resources, and 3) provide a multitude …
Advanced Organic Polymers For The Nanoscale Fabrication Of Fiber-Based Electronics Using The Electrospinning Technique, William Serrano Garcia
Advanced Organic Polymers For The Nanoscale Fabrication Of Fiber-Based Electronics Using The Electrospinning Technique, William Serrano Garcia
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Electrospinning has become one of the most interesting techniques for fabricating nanofibers for multiple applications. The high surface-to-volume ratio nanofibers offer make the perfect structure for filters, sensors, and fiber-based electronics that could lead to a wide range of flexible electronics applications. This technique makes organic semiconducting polymers a promising alternative for single fiber electronics structures. Indeed, a wide variety of structures can be fabricated using electrostatic techniques for polymer manipulation from droplets, fibers, and coaxial structures. Although techniques such as electrospinning led the use of electrostatic forces to generate fibers of a precursor solution, electrospinning requires large enough polymer …

Biochar Amended Bioretention Systems For Nutrient And Fecal Indicator Bacteria Removal From Urban And Agricultural Runoffs, Md Yeasir Arif Rahman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Excessive nitrogen and fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) in stormwater runoff from urban areas or dairy farm operations impair water bodies resulting algal blooms, gastrointestinal illness, and economic losses. Recent advancements in stormwater management, including low impact development (LID) techniques, have provided engineers with a variety of tools to use in place of traditional catch basins and retention ponds. One promising LID technology for runoff management is bioretention, which consists of a shallow depression containing engineered porous media and vegetation. Prior studies have shown that modified bioretention systems that include an internal water storage zone (IWSZ) to promote denitrification can improve …

Traveling Wave Solutions For Two Species Competitive Chemotaxis Systems, T. B. Issa, R. B. Salako, W. Shen
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
In this paper, we consider two species chemotaxis systems with Lotka–Volterra competition reaction terms. Under appropriate conditions on the parameters in such a system, we establish the existence of traveling wave solutions of the system connecting two spatially homogeneous equilibrium solutions with wave speed greater than some critical number c∗. We also show the non-existence of such traveling waves with speed less than some critical number c∗0 , which is independent of the chemotaxis. Moreover, under suitable hypotheses on the coefficients of the reaction terms, we obtain explicit range for the chemotaxis sensitivity coefficients ensuring c∗ = c∗0 , which …

Application Of Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry To Monitor Surface Deformations Of The Trans-European Transport Network (Ten-T) – A Case Study Of The Motorways Crossing Areas Of Mining Operations In The Upper Silesian Coal Basin, Poland, Adam Smoliński, Mariusz Stawinoga, Tomasz Pindel
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Underground hard coal mining causes surface deformations. When the mining operations are conducted beneath linear objects, such as motorways, there is a risk of deformations of the axis of the road and its horizontal and vertical alignment (additional bends and vertical curvatures, longitudinal inclinations, deformations of crosssections). In the areas subjected to mining operations, mining plants conduct geodetic monitoring. Due to their labour intensity and costs, geodetic measurements are usually made only a few times a year. The article discusses the possibility of applying Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) to monitor the subsidence of the vertical alignment of motorways caused …

Stream Sediment Monitoring In Morehead Kentucky, Kristopher Krolikowski, Jen O'Keefe
2021 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Oral Presentations
Sediment loads in stream systems play a big role in how overall runoff behaves. Streams naturally transport sediment at various ratios depending on precipitation. When vegetation is removed in upstream environments, sediment loads on streams increase. Sudden increases of sediments in streams can cause many issues, such as flooding or stream re-direction. In Morehead, KY, large-scale logging operations on the ridge above Knapp Avenue and on the ridge above the north end of Allen Avenue have caused increased sediment load in a small stream called Oxley Branch. This stream flows south parallel to Knapp Avenue and along the eastern property …

Computational Frameworks For Multi-Robot Cooperative 3d Printing And Planning, Laxmi Prasad Poudel
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation proposes a novel cooperative 3D printing (C3DP) approach for multi-robot additive manufacturing (AM) and presents scheduling and planning strategies that enable multi-robot cooperation in the manufacturing environment. C3DP is the first step towards achieving the overarching goal of swarm manufacturing (SM). SM is a paradigm for distributed manufacturing that envisions networks of micro-factories, each of which employs thousands of mobile robots that can manufacture different products on demand. SM breaks down the complicated supply chain used to deliver a product from a large production facility from one part of the world to another. Instead, it establishes a network …
Tribological Studies Of Thick Polytetrafluoroethylene Coatings Enhanced By Polydopamine And Nanoparticles, Sujan Kumar Ghosh
Tribological Studies Of Thick Polytetrafluoroethylene Coatings Enhanced By Polydopamine And Nanoparticles, Sujan Kumar Ghosh
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a popular low friction solid lubricant with high chemical and thermal stability. Thick PTFE coatings have the potential for many tribological applications, such as replacing Tin-based Babbitt materials in journal bearings. However, the weak bonding strength to the substrate and the high wear rate of PTFE coatings are current limiting factors. The lack of understanding of their tribological properties and wear mechanisms in oil-lubricated conditions and how coating thickness affects the tribological performance further hindered the use of PTFE coatings. In this dissertation, polydopamine (PDA), a bio-inspired adhesive, is used as an underlayer for or as a …

Influence Of Extracellular Matrix Stiffness And Topography On Neuronal Cell Behavior And Neurite Outgrowth, Mohan Yasodharababu
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The focus of regeneration therapy for traumatic brain injuries and Alzheimer's disease is on the promotion and growth of neuronal cells. In vitro research attempts to improve this by modifying the stiffness and topography of the extracellular matrix (ECM). However, the limitations of in vitro experiments make it difficult to control the individual factors influencing neuronal cell growth. A computational model can be used to decouple individual factors and study them individually to gain a better understanding of the mechanics between the neuronal cell and ECM, which will aid in the design of in vitro experimental studies.

This study uses advanced modeling and simulation to explore the effects of external events such as radiation interactions on the synaptic devices in an electronic spiking neural network. Specifically, the networks are trained using the spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) learning rule to recognize spatio-temporal patterns (STPs) representing 25 and 100-pixel characters. Memristive synapses based on a TiO2 non-linear drift model designed in Verilog-A are utilized, with STDP learning behavior achieved through bi-phasic pre- and post-synaptic action potentials. The models are modified to include experimentally observed state-altering and ionizing radiation effects on the device. It is found that radiation interactions tend …

The progression of regenerative medicine has advanced the treatment of multiple illnesses and injuries throughout the years. A good example of the benefits of this research is the work that has gone into volumetric muscle loss (VML), where more than 20% of the muscle is loss. Skeletal muscle makes up 40% of the human body so a loss of that size greatly diminishes the strength, the flexibility, physiology, and quality of life of the injured individual. For that reason, various techniques are used to counteract the loss of structure and innate cellular signaling in order to circumvent that from happening. …

Scheduling Allocation And Inventory Replenishment Problems Under Uncertainty: Applications In Managing Electric Vehicle And Drone Battery Swap Stations, Amin Asadi
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, motivated by electric vehicle (EV) and drone application growth, we propose novel optimization problems and solution techniques for managing the operations at EV and drone battery swap stations. In Chapter 2, we introduce a novel class of stochastic scheduling allocation and inventory replenishment problems (SAIRP), which determines the recharging, discharging, and replacement decisions at a swap station over time to maximize the expected total profit. We use Markov Decision Process (MDP) to model SAIRPs facing uncertain demands, varying costs, and battery degradation. Considering battery degradation is crucial as it relaxes the assumption that charging/discharging batteries do not …

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are chemicals that evaporate easily and become gases at ambient temperature and pressure. The EPA has made the monitoring of VOCs mandatory due to their health impacts, which range from headaches and nausea to cancer. The current techniques used for VOC monitoring such as photoionization, gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy, and e-noses sensors are expensive, time-intensive, demand rigorous sample preparation, and cannot quantify the VOCs in the air. Chemical sensors based on piezoelectric transduction like the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) show promising results in terms of providing cost-effective real-time data, robustness, and low power requirements. In this …
Gaze Estimation And Tracking For Assisted Living Environments, Paris Her
Gaze Estimation And Tracking For Assisted Living Environments, Paris Her
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Assisted living environments must be able to efficiently and unobtrusively gather information on a person's well-being. Human gaze direction provides some of the strongest indicators of how a person behaves and interacts with their environment. To that end, this thesis proposes a gaze tracking method that uses a neural network regressor to estimate gaze direction from facial keypoints and integrates them over time using various temporal methods, specifically through moving averages and a Kalman filter. Our gaze regression model uses confidence gated units to handle cases of keypoint occlusion and is able to estimate its own prediction uncertainty. This approach …
The Effects Of Noise On Parametrically Excited Systems With Nonlinear Damping, Donghao Li
The Effects Of Noise On Parametrically Excited Systems With Nonlinear Damping, Donghao Li
Theses and Dissertations
Parametric oscillators are a class of resonating systems in which a parameter, such as stiffness in a mechanical system or capacitance in an electrical system, is periodically modulated in order to alter the system response in a desired manner. A resonance effect occurs when the pump frequency is near twice of resonant frequency. Such systems are said to be “parametrically pumped,” and this pump can, above a certain amplitude threshold, destabilize the system in the absence of nonlinearities. Parametric resonance is widely observed in nature and has been employed in a large variety of engineered systems, most notably in micro-electro-mechanical …
