Calculating Vandalism Risk Assessment For Archaeological Findings Within Heritage Buildings: The Case Of Al-Attar Historical Mosque In Tripoli Lebanon, Hazem Aysh, Eslam M. Elsamahy, Mary Felix

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

A heritage building is a genuine witness for the past and it mostly correlates with communities’ collective memory. It involves a considerable economical asset for cultural tourism in addition to other emotional values. However, building archeology is slightly exposed when handling historical buildings; it is subject to reburial to minimize potential risks and to keep it for future generations. The aim of this research is to explore the validity of exposing an archeological feature by establishing an estimation for vandalism risk through an assessment for society’s attitude concerning the new image given to a historic mosque with exposed archeological features. …

Hydrogel And Graphene Embedded Piezoresistive Microcantilever Sensor For Solvent And Gas Flow Detection, Dipannita Ghosh, Md. Ashiqur Rahman, Ali Ashraf, Nazmul Islam

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Piezoresistive microcantilever sensor is widely used in sensing applications including liquid and gas flow detection. Microcantilevers can function as an embedded system if they are coated with polymers or nanomaterials to improve sensing performance. In this paper, we investigated the performance of piezoresistive microcantilevers (PMC) with and without additional coating. We studied the sensitivity of the PMC sensor after coating it with a three-dimensional porous hydrogel and piezoresistive graphene oxide layer. Hydrogel embedded piezoresistive microcantilever (EPM) showed better results than PMC during solvent sensing application. The resistance change for hydrogel embedded PMC was higher compared to bare PMC by 430% …

Synthesis Of Alginate/Hydroxyapatite Beads For Acetaminophen Delivery, Anesylvia Angan, Nonni Soraya Sambudi

Makara Journal of Science

Conventional drug delivery systems usually involve the intake of multiple drugs, which could amplify the risk of overdosing. Acetaminophen is a widely used pain relief substance that is prone to accidental overdosing. Hence, a controlled drug delivery system is needed to ensure its efficacy. A nanocomposite hydroxyapatite/alginate system that was used as a drug carrier for acetaminophen was synthesized through the sol-gel method, and the mechanism underlying its controlled drug delivery was investigated. Spherical nanocomposite bead samples were synthesized by incorporating 5 wt%, 10 wt%, and 15 wt% hydroxyapatite into mixtures containing alginate. The mixtures were then dropped into calcium …

Recent Development Of Low Iridium Electrocatalysts Toward Efficient Water Oxidation, Jing Ni, Zhao-Ping Shi, Xian Wang, Yi-Bo Wang, Hong-Xiang Wu, Chang-Peng Liu, Jun-Jie Ge, Wei Xing

Journal of Electrochemistry

Developing high-performance and low-cost electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the key to implementing polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE) for hydrogen production. To date, iridium (Ir) is the state-of-the-art OER catalyst, but still suffers from the insufficient activity and scarce earth abundance, which results in high cost both in stack and electricity. Design low-Ir catalysts with enhanced activity and stability that can match the requirements of high current and long-term operation in PEMWE is thus highly desired, which necessitate a deep understanding of acidic OER mechanisms, unique insights of material design strategies, and reliable performance evaluation norm, especially …

Soil microorganisms provide key ecological functions that often rely on metabolic interactions between individual populations of the soil microbiome. To better understand these interactions and community processes, we used chitin, a major carbon and nitrogen source in soil, as a test substrate to investigate microbial interactions during its decomposition. Chitin was applied to a model soil consortium that we developed, “model soil consortium-2” (MSC-2), consisting of eight members of diverse phyla and including both chitin degraders and nondegraders. A multiomics approach revealed how MSC-2 community-level processes during chitin decomposition differ from monocultures of the constituent species. Emergent properties of both …

COVID-19 caused by the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 virus taking a huge toll on global health and caused life-threatening medical complications and elevated mortality rates, especially among older adults and people with existing morbidity. Current evidence suggests that the virus spreads primarily through respiratory droplets emitted by infected persons when breathing, coughing, sneezing, or speaking. These droplets can reach another person through their mouth, nose, or eyes, resulting in infection. The "gold standard'' for clinical diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 is the laboratory-based nucleic acid amplification test, which includes the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test on nasopharyngeal swab samples. The main concerns …

Effects Of Cell-Cell Signaling On Mesenchymal Stem Cell Mechanosensing And Adaptation To Dynamic Material, Matthew E. Lowe Sep 2022

Effects Of Cell-Cell Signaling On Mesenchymal Stem Cell Mechanosensing And Adaptation To Dynamic Material, Matthew E. Lowe

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this research is to identify the role of engineered cell-cell signals on how cells sense material properties. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are adult cells whose behavior is regulated by matrix mechanosensing, which is characterized by stiffness-dependent changes in cell shape and the nuclear localization of mechano-transducer proteins including YAP (Yes-associated Protein). MSC area and nuclear YAP translocation increase with increasing stiffness, and although low levels of N-cadherin-based cell-cell signaling reduce this effect, two fundamental questions remain: (1) do engineered cell-cell signals at higher concentrations further reduce matrix mechanosensing, and (2) does N-cadherin signaling affect MSC adaptation to …

Thermal sensing provides rapid and accurate estimation of crop water stress through canopy temperature data. Canopy temperature is highly dependent on the transpiration rate of the leaves. It is usually assumed that any reduction in crop evapotranspiration (ET) leads to crop yield loss. As a result, an increase in canopy temperature due to a decrease in crop ET would indicate crop yield loss. This research evaluated the hypothesis that crop water stress could be detected using canopy temperature measurements (increased leaf temperature) from infrared thermometers (IRTs) before incurring crop yield loss. This would be possible in a narrow range when …

A current challenge in 3D bioprinting of skin equivalents is to recreate the distinct basal and suprabasal layers and promote their direct interactions. Such a structural arrangement is essential to establish 3D stratified epidermis disease models, such as for the autoimmune skin disease pemphigus vulgaris (PV), which targets the cell– cell junctions at the interface of the basal and suprabasal layers. Inspired by epithelial regeneration in wound healing, a method that combines 3D bioprinting and spatially guided self-reorganization of keratinocytes is developed to recapture the fine structural hierarchy that lies in the deep layers of the epidermis.Herein, keratinocyteladen fibrin hydrogels …

Thermodynamic Limits Of Atmospheric Water Harvesting, Akshay K. Rao, Andrew J. Fix, Yun Chi Yang, David M. Warsinger

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) is a rapidly emerging approach for decentralized water production, but current technology is limited by trade-offs between energy consumption and yield. The field lacks a common basis to compare different AWH technologies and a robust understanding of the performance impacts of water recovery, desorption humidity (for sorbent systems), and realistic component-level efficiencies. By devising a set of unifying assumptions and consistent parameters across technologies, we provide the first fair thermodynamic comparison over a broad range of environmental conditions. Using 2nd law analysis, or least work, we study the maximum efficiency for common open system AWH methods …
