Ai-Enabled Droplet Detection And Tracking For Agricultural Spraying Systems, Praneel Acharya, Travis A. Burgers, Doang Nguyen

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

his work leverages recent advancements in com- puter vision and deep learning to detect and track the motion of droplets captured by a camera. While classical computer vision techniques have been employed for detection and tracking, those approaches have limitations and are not trivially extended to droplets. We approach the problems of droplet detection and tracking through a data-driven framework, in which an annotated database of droplet images is built and object detection and tracking models are trained on this database. The accuracy of the model is evaluated and the whole process is discussed. At this point, droplet geometric properties …

The Impact Of Biofilms And Dissolved Organic Matter On The Transport Of Nanoparticles In Field-Scale Streams, Junyeol Kim, Kevin R. Roche, Diogo Bolster, Kyle Doudrick

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The fate and transport of nanoparticles (NPs) in streams is critical for understanding their overall environmental impact. Using a unique field-scale stream at the Notre Dame-Linked Experimental Ecosystem Facility, we investigated the impact of biofilms and the presence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on the transport of titanium dioxide (TiO2) NPs. Experimental breakthrough curves were analyzed using temporal moments and fit using a mobile-immobile model. The presence of biofilms in the stream severely reduced the transport of the TiO2 NPs, but this was mitigated by the presence of DOM. Under minimal biofilm conditions, the presence of DOM …

Understanding The Role Of Activated Sludge In Oxygen Transfer: Effects Of Sludge Settleability, Solids Retention Time, And Nitrification Reaction, Ken Campbell, Jianmin Wang

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The current understanding on the oxygen transfer in activated sludge process is primarily developed based on two-phase systems, focusing only on oxygen transfer from air to water. However, this research demonstrates that activated sludge particles significantly impact oxygen transfer from air all the way to the microorganisms. Three bench-scale complete-mix activated sludge reactors, operated under the same influent loading and dissolved oxygen level but different solids retention times (SRTs), were used to develop oxygen transfer performance data as effects of different sludge property parameters. These reactors were also operated under batch modes to further validate the effect of nitrification reaction …

Skin Lesion Segmentation By Using Object Detection Networks, Deeplab3+, And Active Contours, Fatemeh Bagheri, Mohammad Jafar Tarokh, Majid Ziaratban

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Developing an automatic system for detection, segmentation, and classification of skin lesions is very useful to aid well-timed diagnosis of skin diseases. Lesion segmentation is a crucial task for automated diagnosis of skin cancers, as it affects significantly the accuracy of the subsequent steps. Varieties in sizes and locations of lesions, and the lesions with low-contrast boundaries make this task very challenging. In this paper, a three-stage CNN-based method is presented for accurate segmentation of lesions from dermoscopic images. At the first step, normalization, approximate locations and sizes of lesions are estimated. Due to the importance of the normalization stage, …

Mocmin: Convex Inferring Of Modular Low-Rank Contact Networks Over Covid Diffusion Data, Emre Sefer

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

SEIR (which consists of susceptible, exposed, infected, and recovered states) is a common diffusion model which could model different disease propagation dynamics across various domains such as influenza and COVID diffusion. As a motivation, across these domains, observing the node states is relatively easier than observing the network edges over which the diffusion is taking place, or it may not even be possible to observe the underlying network. This paper focuses on the problem of predicting modular low-rank human contact network edges only if a SEIR diffusion dynamics spreading among the human on their contact network can be observed. Such …

Monte-Carlo Method Based Simulations For Photothermal Mucosa Coagulation With Accurate Depth Limits, Merve Türker Burhan, Serhat Tozburun

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The mucosa layer, the innermost layer of the gastrointestinal (GI) system, is of great importance in carcinogenesis since most cancerous tissues occur as superficial lesions. Although various treatment strategies exist, the main difficulty in eradicating lesions is unintentional damage to healthy tissues with the uncontrolled depth of treatment. This study proposes a computer modeling approach for simulating depth-resolved photothermal (laser) mucosal coagulation therapy. Computer modeling mimics the thermal dynamics of mucosal tissue to characterize the total heat energy required for successful superficial coagulation, which can be controlled by the scan rate, scan time, output power, and beam diameter of the …

Resistance to checkpoint-blockade treatments is a challenge in the clinic. Both primary and acquired resistance have become major obstacles, greatly limiting the long-lasting effects and wide application of blockade therapy. Many patients with metastatic melanoma eventually require further therapy. The absence of T-cell infiltration to the tumor site is a well-accepted contributor limiting immune checkpoint inhibitor efficacy. In this study, we combined intratumoral injection of plasmid IL-12 with electrotransfer and anti-PD-1 in metastatic B16F10 melanoma tumor model to increase tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes and improve therapeutic efficacy. We showed that effective anti-tumor responses required a subset of tumor-infiltrating CD8+ and CD4 …

Genetic Algorithm Shape Optimization To Manipulate The Nonlinear Response Of A Clamped-Clamped Beam, Tushar Mollik, Ying Geng, Md Raf E. Ul Shougat, Timothy Fitzgerald, Edmon Perkins

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship

Dynamical systems, which are described by differential equations, can have an enhanced response because of their nonlinearity. As one example, the Duffing oscillator can exhibit multiple stable vibratory states for some external forcing frequencies. Although discrete systems that are described by ordinary differential equations have helped to build fundamental groundwork, further efforts are needed in order to tailor nonlinearity into distributed parameter, continuous systems, which are described by partial differential equations. To modify the nonlinear response of continuous systems, topology optimization can be used to change the shape of the mechanical system. While topology optimization is well-developed …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Poor outcomes of peripheral arterial disease stenting are often attributed to the inability of stents to accommodate the complex biomechanics of the flexed lower limb. Abrasion damage caused by rubbing of the stent against the artery wall during limb movement plays a significant role in reconstruction failure but has not been characterized. Our goals were to develop a method of assessing the abrasiveness of peripheral nitinol stents and apply it to several commercial devices. Misago, AbsolutePro, Innova, Zilver, SmartControl, SmartFlex, and Supera stents were deployed inside electrospun nanofibrillar tubes with femoropopliteal artery-mimicking mechanical properties and subjected to cyclic axial compression …

Phthalate metabolites are detectable within the majority of the population. Evidence suggests that a prenatal exposure to phthalates may be associated with the subsequent risks of obesity and elevated blood pressure. We hypothesised that a prenatal exposure to phthalates would lead to an increase in adverse cardiometabolic parameters through childhood and adulthood. The maternal serum phthalate measurements from the stored samples taken from Gen1 mothers at 18 and 34 weeks gestation were examined in relation to the cardiometabolic measures in 387 male offspring from the Raine Study. Data from the Gen2 follow-ups between 3 and 27 years were used. The …

The ion-selective membrane’s mechanism and the perovskite-based membrane’s efficiency were investigated using Molecular Dynamic (MD) simulation. The results specified that the change in the ambient condition, pH, and temperature led to a shift in LLTO pore sizes. Based on the results, pH plays an undeniable role in facilitating …

Sludge-Based Activated Carbon: Characterization And Performance For Removal Of Methylene Blue From Aqueous Solution, Ahmad Anwar Al Madhoon Nov 2022

Sludge-Based Activated Carbon: Characterization And Performance For Removal Of Methylene Blue From Aqueous Solution, Ahmad Anwar Al Madhoon

Theses

Domestic wastewater treatment plants in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) produce 122 thousand tons of dried sludge annually. About 70% of this sludge is dumped in landfills, creating water and soil contamination. Sludge is an energy-rich organic material that could be converted into activated carbon by thermal or chemical processes. Potassium hydroxide has shown great potential as an activating agent for producing high-quality sludge based activated carbon (SBAC). However, its use adds to the cost of the production process. Thus, there is a need for an alternative activating agent that is not costly. One possible chemical is carbide lime which …
