Real-time monitoring of drug delivery in an intravenous infusion system can prevent injury caused by improper drug doses. As the medicine must be administered into the vein at different rates and doses in different people, an ideal intravenous infusion system requires both a low flow rate and large dynamic range monitoring. In this study, a bio-inspired and micromachined volumetric flow sensor is presented for the biomedical application of an intravenous system. This was realized by integrating two sensing units with different sensitivities on one silicon die to achieve a large dynamic range of the volumetric flow rate. The sensor was …

Effect Of Diabetes-Associated Mutations In Kir 6.2/Sur1 On Katp Channel Activities, Yunpeng Li
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY) is a type of diabetes, distinct from either type I or type II, that happens before age 25 (MedlinePlus, 2022). Unlike the other two more common forms of diabetes, MODY is classified as a series of monogenetic disorders (American Diabetes Association Professional Practice Committee, 2021), caused by autosomal mutations. MODY is typically characterized by insufficient secretion of insulin, a similar symptom to type I diabetes, classified into 14 different types based on mutations found on different genes. Among them, subtypes 12 and 13, also called neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM), are caused by gain-of-function …

Introduction: Direct quantification of hemodynamic factors applied to a cerebral aneurysm (CA) remains inaccessible due to the lack of technologies to measure the flow field within an aneurysm precisely. This study aimed to develop an in vitro validated 3D in silico patient-specific internal carotid artery sidewall aneurysm (ICASA) model which can be used to investigate hemodynamic factors on the CA pathophysiology. Methods: The validated ICASA model was developed by quantifying and comparing the flow field using particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Specifically, the flow field characteristics, i.e., blood flowrates, normalized velocity profiles, flow streamlines, …

Microfluidic devices (MFDs) printed in 3-D geometry using digital light projection to polymerize monomers often have surfaces that are not as hydrophobic as MFDs made from polydimethylsiloxane. Droplet microfluidics in these types of devices are subject to droplet adhesion and aqueous spreading on less hydrophobic MFD surfaces. We have developed a post-processing technique using hydrophobic monomers that renders the surfaces of these devices much more hydrophobic. The technique is fast and easy, and involves flowing monomer without initiator into the channels and then exposing the entire device to UV light that generates radicals from the initiator molecules remaining in the …

As the creator, McMullen’s vision could determine the future of robotic design, …
The Evolution Of Gendered Software: Products, Scientific Reasoning, Criticism, And Tools, Victoria A. E. Kratel
The Evolution Of Gendered Software: Products, Scientific Reasoning, Criticism, And Tools, Victoria A. E. Kratel
Human-Machine Communication
Over the past 7 decades, gendered software has become globally established. In this theoretical distribution, I outline the evolution of gendered software. The journey of gendered software started with the raw idea fueled by Alan Turing’s imitation game in the 1950s. And only shortly thereafter, in the 1960s and 1970s, the first gendered software products like Joseph Weizenbaum’s ELIZA were developed. Thus, academia took its time to not only explore technological aspects, but to further investigate the matter of gender in the 1990s CASA-paradigm (Nass et al., 1994) and Media Equation (Reeves & Nass, 1996). As these theories reasoned the …

Gender And Human-Machine Communication: Where Are We?, Leopoldina Fortunati, Autumn P. Edwards
Human-Machine Communication
In this introduction to the fifth volume of the journal Human-Machine Communication, we present and discuss the five articles focusing on gender and human-machine communication. In this essay, we will analyze the theme of gender, including how this notion has historically and politically been set up, and for what reasons. We will start by considering gender in in-person communication, then we will progress to consider what happens to gender when it is mediated by the most important ICTs that preceded HMC: the telephone, mobile phone, and computer-mediated communication (CMC). We outline the historical framework necessary to analyze the last section …

Formation And Interrogation Of A Modeling Excel Database For Sorbent Preconcentrate With Gc/Ms, Lisa Caravello
Formation And Interrogation Of A Modeling Excel Database For Sorbent Preconcentrate With Gc/Ms, Lisa Caravello
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are of great interest and the subject of much research, as they can be used in various applications. Preconcentrating this class of analytes is necessary as they can be elusive with simple sampling techniques. VOCs are often captured using sorbents in thermal desorption tubes as preconcentrates prior to analysis, commonly gas chromatography mass spectroscopy (GCMS). There are gaps in knowledge in behavior of materials used as sorbents i.e., if they will retain an analyte of interest appropriately. In this research I seek to eliminate speculation and unknown variables of analyte and sorbent combinations by creating a …

Advancing Fluorescent Contrast Agent Recovery Methods For Surgical Guidance Applications, Brook Kennedy Byrd
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Fluorescence-guided surgery (FGS) utilizes fluorescent contrast agents and specialized optical instruments to assist surgeons in intraoperatively identifying tissue-specific characteristics, such as perfusion, malignancy, and molecular function. In doing so, FGS represents a powerful surgical navigation tool for solving clinical challenges not easily addressed by other conventional imaging methods. With growing translational efforts, major hurdles within the FGS field include: insufficient tools for understanding contrast agent uptake behaviors, the inability to image tissue beyond a couple millimeters, and lastly, performance limitations of currently-approved contrast agents in accurately and rapidly labeling disease. The developments presented within this thesis aim to address such …
Structure And Morphology Of Photoreactive Monomer–Nanoparticle Mixtures Under Patterned Irradiation, Shreyas Pathreeker
Structure And Morphology Of Photoreactive Monomer–Nanoparticle Mixtures Under Patterned Irradiation, Shreyas Pathreeker
Dissertations - ALL
Establishing processing–structure relationships is central to materials science. In this work, we seek answers to whether morphology can be controlled during Light–Induced Self–Writing (LISW) in polymer composite materials, and if yes, how? LISW is based on the ability of light to undergo divergence–free propagation in photoreactive media due to photopolymerization–induced rise in refractive index of the medium. Notably, LISW in polymeric materials has found use predominantly for the fabrication of optical waveguides but has not been explored in polymer–inorganic mixtures. Using through–mask projection which creates a spatially periodic array of optical beams, this work extends LISW to nanoparticle–monomer mixtures to …

Ceria Defect Engineering Using Thin-Films/Ald And Biological Applications, Udit Kumar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Ceria nanostructures have been utilized for various engineering applications due to their unique defect structure, enabling them to have regenerative redox properties. The ability to shuttle between Ce3+ and Ce4+ oxidation states extends to unique properties. Defect level in ceria is usually expressed in the Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio. It can be achieved by varying the size(0 to 3D), morphologies, dopants, hetero-nanostructures, and external stimuli. However, it is still a challenge to have precise control over defect structures in the ceria lattice. The current study aims to explore the thin film deposition techniques for cerium oxide using ALD (Atomic layer deposition) and …

Fabrication, Characterization, And Simulation Of Graphene-Copper Electrical Conductors, Raju Prasad Ghimire
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
The addition of nanocarbons to copper (Cu), specifically in the form of graphene (GN), has been shown to enhance copper's properties. GN-Cu nanocomposites can potentially achieve higher electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties compared with copper. These characteristics make GN-Cu materials interesting for several applications including but not limited to interconnects, high voltage lines, and rotating machines. Copper’s microstructure and nanoscale interfacial phenomena between the GN and Cu control charge conduction in GN-Cu materials. In this work, we investigated the possibilities of conductivity enhancement in multi-layered GN-Cu composites both theoretically (classical, quantum, and atomistic models) and experimentally.
Additionally, our work elucidates …
Investigating Applications Of Deep Learning For Diagnosis Of Post Traumatic Elbow Disease, Hugh James
Investigating Applications Of Deep Learning For Diagnosis Of Post Traumatic Elbow Disease, Hugh James
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Traumatic events such as dislocation, breaks, and arthritis of musculoskeletal joints can cause the development of post-traumatic joint contracture (PTJC). Clinically, noninvasive techniques such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans are used to analyze the disease. Such procedures require a patient to sit sedentary for long periods of time and can be expensive as well. Additionally, years of practice and experience are required for clinicians to accurately recognize the diseased anterior capsule region and make an accurate diagnosis. Manual tracing of the anterior capsule is done to help with diagnosis but is subjective and timely. As a result, there is …
Wearable Sensors For Plants, Nafize Ishtiaque Hossain
Wearable Sensors For Plants, Nafize Ishtiaque Hossain
Electrical Engineering Theses
This thesis reports PlantFit: a research and development project that is intended to develop wearable sensors for plants. Plants are responsible for providing food, fiber, fuel, and fodder to the society. To overcome the problem of a limited land base, a more efficient farming approach needs to be developed, and thus precision farming is required. Precision farming would entail personalized healthcare in plants. When the plant is under any stress, the productivity declines. Plants release phytohormones, also known as early responders, in response to these stressors. The key crop phytohormones that respond to environmental stresses include salicylic acid (SA), indole-3-acetic …
Development Of A Crosslinked Osteochondral Xenograft And A Collagen Stabilizing Intra-Articular Injection To Remediate Cartilage Focal Lesions To Prevent Osteoarthritis, Mark Lewis Mosher
Development Of A Crosslinked Osteochondral Xenograft And A Collagen Stabilizing Intra-Articular Injection To Remediate Cartilage Focal Lesions To Prevent Osteoarthritis, Mark Lewis Mosher
Theses and Dissertations
Osteoarthritis is one of the most common causes of disability in adults in America. It is a progressive and degenerative disease where the articular cartilage is broken down and lost from the surfaces of bones causing chronic pain and swelling in the joints, and currently has no cure. The most commonly osteoarthritis starts from a focal lesion on the cartilage surface, which will expand on the surface and downwards through the thickness of the tissue. The current gold standard for correcting cartilage focal lesions is the osteochondral autograft/allograft transplantation (OAT), which replaces the defect with a fresh osteochondral graft. The …

The objective of this project is to examine the differences between Moroccan and American students with regards to the cultural influences that led them to pursue an engineering degree. Annually since 2015, a partnership between a university in Morocco and MSU allows senior engineering Moroccan students to study at MSU to obtain their graduate degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering. The roughly equal gender representation in most Moroccan cohorts prompted our research question: “How do students from Morocco and the United States describe the cultural reasons that factored into their choice to pursue an engineering degree?” This exploratory qualitative study …
Towards Structured Planning And Learning At The State Fisheries Agency Scale, Caleb A. Aldridge
Towards Structured Planning And Learning At The State Fisheries Agency Scale, Caleb A. Aldridge
Theses and Dissertations
Inland recreational fisheries has grown philosophically and scientifically to consider economic and sociopolitical aspects (non-biological) in addition to the biological. However, integrating biological and non-biological aspects of inland fisheries has been challenging. Thus, an opportunity exists to develop approaches and tools which operationalize planning and decision-making processes which include biological and non-biological aspects of a fishery. This dissertation expands the idea that a core set of goals and objectives is shared among and within inland fisheries agencies; that many routine operations of inland fisheries managers can be regimented or standardized; and the novel concept that current information and operations can …

A long-held practice is to mix agricultural soil with a soil amendment to improve growing conditions in crops. A common soil amendment is biosolids produced from both municipal and dairy wastewater due to the macro- and micronutrients within it. Both the agricultural and wastewater industries are participating in the Circular Economy concept (CEC). Two experiments explored using expended bioelectrochemical systems (BES) that treated either synthetic dairy wastewater (DWW) or synthetic municipal wastewater (SWW) as soil amendments to improve corn plant growth when treated with three different nutrient treatments: 100%- 50%- and 0% Hoagland Nutrient Solutions. Biochar and used terracotta clay …
Oxidized Fibrin Alginate Microbeads To Treat Vascular Calcification, Brittany Nichole Macha
Oxidized Fibrin Alginate Microbeads To Treat Vascular Calcification, Brittany Nichole Macha
Theses and Dissertations
Calcification is linked to a high prevalence of cardiovascular events and mortality due to arterial stiffness. Stiffening of the arteries in the case of medial calcification is due to hydroxyapatite mineral deposited in the artery thus leading to the loss of elastin. A possibility of removing this rogue mineral along the vessel walls could be the use of osteoclasts. Osteoclasts, a type of osteocyte, have the unique ability to absorb bone in the bone turnover process. It is proposed that in the future, osteoclasts be delivered to the site of mineralization through oxidized alginate-fibrin microbeads. Alginate hydrogels have proven great …

Hydraulic Redistribution Under Saline Conditions, Josh Gottlieb
Hydraulic Redistribution Under Saline Conditions, Josh Gottlieb
Civil and Environmental Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Water scarcity and soil salinity are dual stressors for plants in arid, salt-affected ecosystems. Hydraulic redistribution, a hydraulic adaptation which moves water through plant roots into dry or saline soil regions along potential gradients, aids plant survival in stressful environments. Recent theory regarding hydraulic redistribution proposes limitations on the process within saline soils. This study applies a minimalist resistor-capacitor model of the soil-plant-atmosphere system to the experimental conditions of a 2010 study investigating hydraulic redistribution in a salt affected area. The effectiveness of the model is evaluated, and a sensitivity analysis is conducted to identify key dynamics affecting the moisture …
