Comparative Enzymatic Analysis Of Different Isoforms Of Group A Streptococcal Bacteriophage H4489a Hyaluronidase, Urvi Prakash Rawal
Comparative Enzymatic Analysis Of Different Isoforms Of Group A Streptococcal Bacteriophage H4489a Hyaluronidase, Urvi Prakash Rawal
All ETDs from UAB
The Hyaluronate Lyase derived from Group A streptococcal bacteriophage H4489A gene (HylP) is known for cleaving the glycosidic bonds of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HMWHA), a substance often overexpressed in certain types of cancer cells. This enzymatic action produces HA oligosaccharides. Previous research, conducted by our team, has demonstrated that these oligosaccharides play a significant role in reducing the invasion, migration, and proliferation of breast cancer cells. This effect occurs through the disruption of Erk1/2 activation and RhoA expression. This bacteriophage hyaluronate lyase (HylP), a 40kDa protein, possesses a unique collagen-like sequence, consisting of 30 amino acids in a …
Development Of Uas And Geophysical Techniques For Agriculture And Environmental Site Characterization, Yunyi Guan
Development Of Uas And Geophysical Techniques For Agriculture And Environmental Site Characterization, Yunyi Guan
Doctoral Dissertations
"Soil properties are critical for agricultural management. Geophysical techniques such as ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electromagnetic induction have been used to measure soil properties for agricultural applications. However, their measurements are only acquired along select traverses within a field, and the data processing can be time-consuming, the instruments can also be expensive. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are a recent advancement used for precision agriculture. Compared with geophysical data, UAVs have higher resolution and wider coverage and can quickly collect data across the whole field. The operation is also relatively simpler with a more economical acquisition cost. This research investigates …
A Lightweight Machine-Learning Framework For Enhancing Security In Iot Blockchain Networks, Charles Connor Rawlins
A Lightweight Machine-Learning Framework For Enhancing Security In Iot Blockchain Networks, Charles Connor Rawlins
Doctoral Dissertations
"Blockchain is one of the fastest technologies that rivals the Internet in terms of adoption speed. This security method is applicable to data-centric environments for validating data in the presence of faults. However, traditional blockchain implementation introduces bottlenecks with computationally intense security measures to prevent malicious spam and resolve conflicts. This dissertation explores a new direction for blockchain technology that allows limited nodes, like IoT devices, to make independent decisions with compressed knowledge of past blockchain history through the use of machine-learning for active decisions (or the first machine-intelligent blockchain protocol). Proposing to introduce machine-intelligence into the rapidly evolving paradigm …
Kinetic Modeling And Simulations Of Plasma-Surface-Dust Interactions For Lunar Exploration, David Clifford Lund
Kinetic Modeling And Simulations Of Plasma-Surface-Dust Interactions For Lunar Exploration, David Clifford Lund
Doctoral Dissertations
"Due to the recent relevance of NASA’s focus on lunar missions, a better understanding of the lunar plasma-surface-dust environment is vital for their success. The lunar surface, devoid of an atmosphere and a global magnetic field, is directly exposed to solar radiation and solar wind plasma. This exposure leads to the electrical charging of the lunar surface due to the bombardment of solar wind plasma and the emission/collection of photoelectrons. Therefore, this research developed accurate and efficient computational models of plasma-surface-dust interactions and extend a legacy simulation code, namely the Immersed-Finite-Element Particle-in-Cell (IFE-PIC), to a parallel version: Parallel Immersed-Finite-Element Particle-in-Cell …
World Spirit And The Apotheosis Of Artificial Superintelligence: A Speculative Design Proposal, Ian Gonsher
World Spirit And The Apotheosis Of Artificial Superintelligence: A Speculative Design Proposal, Ian Gonsher
Scholarly Research
This essay puts forth a speculative design proposal for a device with affordances for talking to, and receiving responses from, God. We begin with an analysis and critique of the concept of God, framing this concept within an understanding of Hegelian Spirit (Geist) and technological evolution. In this context, Spirit, or World Spirit (Weltgeist), can be characterized as the aggregate consciousness of all people - as human consciousness itself: In the simplest terms, this immanent framing of the “mind of God” is culturally and socially constituted as the communication that people engage in with each other, in all the diverse …

Automatic Detection Of Birds In Images Acquired With Remotely Piloted Aircraft For Managing Wildlife Strikes To Civil Aircraft, Maurycio Rodrigues Oviedo, Flavio A. C. Mendonca Ph.D., Jose Cabrera, Cole A. Mcnall, Raymond Ayres, Ricardo Luís Barbosa, Rodrigo Gallis
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Wildlife strikes represent a significant threat to aviation safety and economics, as evidenced by notable incidents such as the emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 in 2009. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) acknowledges this growing concern, as evidenced by its report on Wildlife Strikes to Civil Aircraft in the United States from 1990 to 2019.To address the need for improved risk management, airports conduct Wildlife Hazard Assessments (WHA), a laborious process typically relying on visual identification by Qualified Airport Wildlife Biologists (QAWB). However, technological advancements, such as Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) and machine learning (ML), offer promising solutions to …
Near Infrared Upconversion Nanoparticles Modified With Semiconducting Polymers For Anti-Counterfeiting, Abraham Chibuikem Ikeji
Near Infrared Upconversion Nanoparticles Modified With Semiconducting Polymers For Anti-Counterfeiting, Abraham Chibuikem Ikeji
Dissertations and Theses
Lanthanide doped up-conversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are excellent luminescent materials due to their ability to perform photon up-conversion from low energy to high energy using their triplet energy metastable states and because of their long-lived excited state. These properties enable multiple applications with the near infrared upconversion emission. They have been incorporated in developing technologies to help curb counterfeiting activities and other areas of research. However, they still have some limitations such as the hydrophobic nature of the UCNPs, and the absence of functional groups that can also help impact other desired features. Thus, in this work we have coated up-conversion …

Skin lesion datasets used in the research are highly imbalanced; Generative Adversarial Networks can generate synthetic skin lesion images to solve the class imbalance problem, but it can result in bias and domain shift. Domain shifts in skin lesion datasets can also occur if different instruments or imaging resolutions are used to capture skin lesion images. The deep learning models may not perform well in the presence of bias and domain shift in skin lesion datasets. This work presents a domain adaptation algorithm-based methodology for mitigating the effects of domain shift and bias in skin lesion datasets. Six experiments were …

The development of a rapid, sensitive, specific method for detecting foodborne pathogens is paramount for supplying safe food to enhance public health safety. Despite the significant improvement in pathogen detection methods, key issues are still associated with rapid methods, such as distinguishing living cells from dead, the pathogenic potential or health risk of the analyte at the time of consumption, the detection limit, and the sample-to-result. Mammalian cell-based assays analyze pathogens’ interaction with host cells and are responsive only to live pathogens or active toxins. In this study, a human embryonic kidney (HEK293) cell line expressing Toll-Like Receptor 5 (TLR-5) …

Introduction: a loss of intestinal barrier function, inflammation, and an elevated expression of epithelial heat shock protein 60 (Hsp60) are features of an inflamed bowel. Probiotics have been used to alleviate colitis-induced pathologies, but offer poor adhesion and adaptation to the diseased gut. We hypothesize that enhancing probiotic adhesion in the inflamed bowel may ameliorate such pathologies. Listeria adhesion protein (LAP; 94-kDa acetaldehyde alcohol dehydrogenase) aids Listeria attachment to the epithelial cells by interacting with the mammalian receptor Hsp60. Bioengineered Lactobacillus casei probiotics (BLPs) expressing LAP showed strong interaction with epithelial Hsp60, a high immunomodulatory response, and sustained epithelial barrier …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Microplastics, plastic particles with diameter 1 micrometer to 5 millimeters, can disturb marine ecosystems due to their small size and surface properties which can be a carrier for hazardous matters. While wastewater treatment plants could remove some microplastics but some of them remain. Among the various removal techniques, flotation is a potential method due to the hydrophobic nature of microplastics. This study investigates the effects of ultraviolet radiation on the surface wettability of microplastics and removal efficiency of microplastics. The 6 types of microplastics were prepared from plastic boards. After the ultraviolet radiation, the results showed that ultraviolet radiation could …

Zero-Shot Adaptation Of Molecular Generative Adversarial Network For Specific Protein Targets, Ravipas Aphikulvanich
Zero-Shot Adaptation Of Molecular Generative Adversarial Network For Specific Protein Targets, Ravipas Aphikulvanich
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Drug discovery, crucial for identifying new potential drug candidates to treat diseases and improve health, is increasingly enhanced by deep learning approaches such as molecular generation models. However, creating drug candidates with desired properties, such as the quantitative estimate of drug-likeness (QED), synthetic accessibility (SA), and binding affinity (BA), remains a significant challenge, especially when training generative models for specific protein targets with limited pharmaceutical data. Addressing these challenges, this thesis presents Mol-Zero-GAN, a novel framework designed to generate drug candidates tailored to specific protein targets without additional data by employing zero-shot adaptation techniques and Bayesian optimization (BO). By fine-tuning …

Linear Actuator Using Electromagnetic Brake For Damping Modulation In Physical Human-Robot Interaction, Zahid Ullah
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Improving the transparency of high-transmission-ratio linear actuators is essential for enhancing the safety and performance of high-force robotic systems that engage in physical contact with humans in unstructured environments. However, achieving this goal presents significant challenges. A proposed solution for active body weight support systems involves a linear actuator design, combining a high-force unit with an agile, highly back-drivable unit, using an electrorheological-fluid brake. This dissertation introduces an approach that utilizes an electromagnetic (EM) brake with a reduced rotor inertia to address these challenges. The EM brake's increased torque capacity allows for integration with a low-gear-ratio linear transmission. The mini …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This work focused on toughening polylactic acid (PLA) with an abundant and sustainable bio-based filler from natural rubber. Deproteinized natural rubber (DPNR) was modified by grafting with methyl methacrylate monomer (MMA) and further crosslinked via e-beam irradiation and spray drying to achieve ultrafine fully vulcanized powdered natural rubber grafted with polymethylmethacrylate (UFPNR-g-PMMA) to solves in the challenges of incompatibility between the DPNR and PLA. Interestingly, UFPNR-g-PMMA showed no agglomeration between rubber particles compared to that of neat UFPNR which showed partial agglomeration after irradiation crosslinking. The flexural toughness shows a significant improvement (351%) to 11280 ± 1522 kJ/m3 compared to …

Risk Assessment Of Microplastics Contamination In Soil And Leachate From Different Ages Of Landfill, Panuwat Koonmee
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Landfills were used for the disposal of waste materials, but they could contribute to microplastic (MP) pollution. MPs waste had been released in landfills into the surrounding environment, contaminating soil and leachate collection pond. Although there were many reports that MPs could generate in leachate and soil samples from the landfill, it exists many blanks for the evolution of physical and chemical characteristics of MPs with different landfill age. In order to address the question of changing in the abundances and characteristics of MPs in different ages of landfill as potential sources of contamination and the efficacy of existing landfill …

Relationship Between Microbial And Chemical Risk After Chlorination Of Domestic Wastewater For Discharge And Reclamation, Rotsathon Plumsut
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Disinfection is crucial for protecting public health during wastewater reuse. Chlorination is a widely used disinfection method, but it also leads to the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs), which can pose environmental and health risks. Among these DBPs, haloacetonitriles (HANs), particularly dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN), are of significant concern due to their toxicity. This research investigated the relationship between microbiological and chemical risks associated with chlorination in secondary and tertiary wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Bangkok. The study found that secondary wastewater (9.0-14.0 mg/L) required up to 10 times higher initial chlorine levels to achieve the same norovirus reduction levels (3-5 log …

Improved Sequence Embeddings For Peptide-Class I Mhc Binding Prediction, Patiphan Wongklaew
Improved Sequence Embeddings For Peptide-Class I Mhc Binding Prediction, Patiphan Wongklaew
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The binding of a peptide antigen to a class I major histocompatibility complex (MHC) protein is considered an essential process by which the immune system monitors infected cells. This mechanism has facilitated the development of peptide-based vaccines aimed at stimulating the patient's immune response for cancer treat-ment. Accurate prediction of peptide-MHC binding is therefore crucial for prioritizing optimal peptides tailored to individual patients. Nevertheless, many MHC alleles lack sufficient experimental data on peptide-MHC binding, which potentially constrains the accuracy of existing prediction models. This study introduces an enhanced iteration of MHCSeqNet, an open-source deep learning model which utilizes sequence data …
Silica Dust Exposure Assessment Using Job-Exposure Matrix:A Case Of Sandstone Workers In Thailand, Chamaiphon Chari
Silica Dust Exposure Assessment Using Job-Exposure Matrix:A Case Of Sandstone Workers In Thailand, Chamaiphon Chari
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Respirable crystalline silica (RCS) has been classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). In Thailand, household sandstone workers were one of the most susceptible occupational groups to silicosis. However, a lack of current information about their work patterns and job-related exposures to respirable crystalline silica could hinder the success of tracking and surveillance programs. This study was conducted to explore working characteristics and patterns, and to evaluate the work diary data in the estimation of RCS exposure and health risk among household sandstone workers. All data were collected from a work diary record …

Edible insects are emerging as a sustainable food source due to their high nutritional value. This study employed the three-phase partitioning (TPP) method to extract oils from sago worm (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus), superworm (Zophobas morio), and cricket (Acheta domesticus). The study evaluated and compared the physicochemical properties of these insect oils, including iodine value (IV), peroxide value (PV), p-anisidine value (p-AV), acid value (AV), refractive index (RI), thermal behavior, and fatty acid compositions. Results revealed that the sago worm exhibited the highest oil yield (47.8 ± 2.2%) compared to the superworm (23.8 ± 1.4%) and cricket (6.4 ± 0.6%). Cricket oil …

Converting skin by-product of unicornfish (Naso reticulatus Randall, 2011) into a valuable commodity like collagen is a good strategy to explore alternative sources for land-based animals. Additionally, marine fish collagens are preferable due to their safer and great properties. This project aimed to compare extractability of collagens prepared with three organic acids (i.e., acetic, lactic and citric acids), and their characteristics were also discussed. Collagen extracted with citric acid (CSCUS) (7.10%) had a significantly higher yield (p

Sugar content is a superior quality indicator for the post-harvesting and ripening status of climacteric fruits. Total soluble solids (TSS) represented by °Brix index is a measure of the sugar content. The conventional way to measure TSS is by invasive (IN) technique using manual or digital refractometers. While non-invasive (NIN) infrared refractometer devices have been developed in recent years for various agricultural and food science applications, its accuracy to measure fruit TSS directly is not straightforward, as the device is only dedicated to uses for a specific fruit. This study aims to investigate the suitability of the use of a …

The worldwide cheese production is dominated by animal milk sources with various industrial procedures, including animal rennet. There is a need to diversify the animal-based dairy products into plant-based one, not only to nurture the halalan tayyiban concept for Muslims, but also to accommodate the dietary restriction of some consumers. The objective of this work is to formulate a cheese type derived from plant-based milk with permissible ingredients to create a product for Muslim and non-Muslim consumers. In this study, we explored the use of conventional and non-conventional cheese-making procedures. A total of four experimental formulations (EF1-4) combinations were conducted …
