The class of chemicals known as Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are believed to be widespread in the natural environment, but the full extent of PFAS prevalence is not well understood, particularly in karst springs. The objectives of this study were to (1) collect water samples from Cave Springs and Withrow Springs, Northwest Arkansas, (2) measure for concentrations of 40 PFAS compounds using EPA Method 1633, and (3) compare differences in PFAS concentrations and discuss potential sources of PFAS for each spring. Each spring was sampled on September 29, 2025, October 13, 2025, and November 10, 2025, and water samples …
A Systems Approach To Nitrogen Fertilizer Management: Modeling Emissions And Runoff Pathways In Arkansas Agriculture, Avonelle Lindon
A Systems Approach To Nitrogen Fertilizer Management: Modeling Emissions And Runoff Pathways In Arkansas Agriculture, Avonelle Lindon
Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Nitrogen fertilizer management is a critical challenge in modern agriculture. This thesis develops a system dynamics model of nitrogen in Arkansas rice and corn systems to explore barriers to translating agricultural research into practical farmer guidance. The modeling process revealed key challenges: (1) scarcity of Arkansas-specific factors and best management practice (BMP) effectiveness data; (2) tension between model comprehensiveness and accessibility; (3) misalignments in conservation incentive structures; and (4) difficulty in validating models without field measurements. The resulting model demonstrates basic nitrogen cycle processes and BMP integration, but validation against published literature revealed significant issues with predictive accuracy. These findings …
Low-Cost Rf Exposure Monitoring With Tinyml Prediction, Sanad Sahawneh
Low-Cost Rf Exposure Monitoring With Tinyml Prediction, Sanad Sahawneh
Nanoscale Science & Engineering (discontinued with class year 2014)
The proliferation of wireless technologies has produced a dense, increasingly heterogeneous radio-frequency (RF) environment that surrounds modern life. While regulatory bodies such as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) maintain exposure guidelines, the tools that ordinary people, educators, and small institutions can use to actually observe RF exposure in their own spaces remain expensive, specialized, and largely confined to professional laboratories. Spectrum analyzers and calibrated field probes routinely cost between five hundred and one hundred thousand dollars per unit, placing continuous local monitoring out of reach for most environments where exposure questions are most natural …

Comparative Fatigue Analysis Of Cf-Pla Metamaterial Bone Plates For Orthopaedic Fixation, Ani Daniel, Hamed Bakhtiari, Barun K. Das, Muhammad Aamir, Majid Tolouei-Rad
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Bone plates are widely used in orthopaedic surgery to stabilise fractured bones and support healing following traumatic injuries or osteotomies. However, conventional metallic bone plates suffer from stress shielding and stiffness mismatch with bone, which can hinder optimal healing. Additive manufacturing enables the incorporation of novel metamaterial architectures into polymer-based implants to enhance mechanical properties. The fatigue behaviour of these implants during the healing period is critical to ensuring their structural integrity and long-term performance. In this study, the compressive fatigue performance of fused deposition modelling (FDM)-printed carbon fibre-reinforced polylactic acid (CF-PLA) bone plates were investigated. Four metamaterial structures—tetrachiral, re-entrant, …
Reward Representation Learning, Gregory M. Hyde
Reward Representation Learning, Gregory M. Hyde
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
The \emph{Markov decision process} (MDP) has long served as the canonical model for sequential decision-making. However, it assumes that the reward function is Markov with respect to a given state representation---an assumption that often does not hold in practice. Instead, agents typically only perceive streams of observations and actions and must infer the latent structure according to which reward unfolds over time. From this perspective, reward prediction is initially non-Markov, reflecting a mismatch between the agent's current representation and the underlying structure of the environment.
In this thesis, we advance the view that reward is not simply a signal to …
Exploring Cognitive Load Theory In The Post-Secondary Engineering Classroom, Gabriel Q. Van Dyke
Exploring Cognitive Load Theory In The Post-Secondary Engineering Classroom, Gabriel Q. Van Dyke
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Engineering programs often emphasize subject-matter expertise over pedagogical training, which can leave students struggling with course demands and contribute to retention challenges. This study applied Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) to examine how undergraduate engineering students experience the cognitive demands of their coursework compared to non-engineering classes. Using a sequential explanatory mixed methods design, cognitive load surveys were followed by interviews to address two research questions: (1) What are the differences in intrinsic and extraneous cognitive load levels between engineering courses and non-engineering courses taken concurrently by undergraduate engineering students? (2) How do engineering students perceive the unique challenges or benefits …
Two Applications Of Lifting-Line Theory For The Design Of Efficient Aircraft, Amanda K. Olsen
Two Applications Of Lifting-Line Theory For The Design Of Efficient Aircraft, Amanda K. Olsen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Numerical lifting-line is a tool that can be used to evaluate the forces and moments of an aircraft wing. This method has limitations but it is beneficial in obtaining a large set of results with relatively little computational power. This research seeks to analyze two different flight scenarios through the use of two numerical lifting-line tools developed at the Utah State University AeroLab. The first scenario involves an aircraft in ground effect flight. When an aircraft flies close to the ground, a phenomenon called ground effect occurs where the lift is increased and the induced drag is decreased. Therefore, flying …

This study examined why individuals choose to become secondary technology and engineering education (TEE) teachers and whether motivations differ between men and women. TEE programs help prepare students for careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), yet schools face teacher shortages and low female representation in the field. Understanding what draws people to this profession can support better recruitment and retention efforts. Sixty-six current TEE teachers completed a survey about the factors that influenced their decision to teach. Overall, the strongest motivations were a personal interest in teaching, enjoyment of working with young people, and the desire to make …
Freshwater Mussel Reintroduction And Recolonization Habitat Modeling Using Hydraulic, Sediment And Geomorphic Parameters, Megan Elizabeth Dinicola
Freshwater Mussel Reintroduction And Recolonization Habitat Modeling Using Hydraulic, Sediment And Geomorphic Parameters, Megan Elizabeth Dinicola
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Freshwater mussels are an important group of aquatic animals that live within the riverbed, but their populations have been drastically reduced by habitat alteration and other anthropogenic activities. In an effort to bolster populations, river managers and biologists are using mussel reintroductions as part of their restoration efforts but there are gaps in our understanding of where to reintroduce mussels within a river to see them create self-sustaining populations. This research helps shrink this gap by better understanding the physical habitat needs and population expansion potential of subadult freshwater mussels, or the size of mussel that hatcheries grow for reintroduction, …
Cylindrical Versus Spherical Self-Similar Capillary Cavity Collapse, Karl Cardin, Christophe Josserand, Raul Bayoan Cal
Cylindrical Versus Spherical Self-Similar Capillary Cavity Collapse, Karl Cardin, Christophe Josserand, Raul Bayoan Cal
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Drop tower experiments have been performed to study the capillary collapse of large high-aspect-ratio cavities. Cavities are formed by momentarily impinging the free surface of a liquid bath with a jet of air in the microgravity environment of a drop tower. The collapse may give rise to a jet and three distinct jetting regimes are identified. Simulations are performed to further investigate the phenomena. The abrupt emergence of a thin high velocity jet is observed experimentally and numerically at a specific initial cavity aspect ratio. Different power laws are identified in different regions of the cavity during the collapse providing …
Data-Driven Neuro-Fuzzy Modeling And Rule Optimization For Intelligent Prediction Of Bioreactor Dynamics, Kamala Najaf Mammadzada
Data-Driven Neuro-Fuzzy Modeling And Rule Optimization For Intelligent Prediction Of Bioreactor Dynamics, Kamala Najaf Mammadzada
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
Modeling wastewater bioreactors is a challenging problem in environmental engineering because the processes are constantly changing and the microorganisms do not behave in a linear or predictable way. This makes it difficult to predict and control the system behavior. This research investigates three artificial intelligence approaches for modeling wastewater bioreactors: the Mamdani Fuzzy Inference System (FIS), the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), and clustering-based fuzzy models. These models help us predict what is happening in the bioreactors. For instance they help us predict how the amount of substances in the water is changing over time like dS0/dt dSs/dt …
Quantitative Fluorescence Imaging Using A Paired Agent Approach For Improving Surgical Decision Making, Sanjana Pannem
Quantitative Fluorescence Imaging Using A Paired Agent Approach For Improving Surgical Decision Making, Sanjana Pannem
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Surgical resection remains to be the cornerstone of treatment for most solid tumors, where the primary objective is to remove all visible and microscopic disease. However, the extent of tumor resection is inherently limited by the surgeon’s ability to distinguish tumor from normal tissue, intraoperatively. As a result, positive surgical margins (PSM), where residual tumor remains after surgery, are a common occurrence and are associated with increased recurrence, need for adjuvant therapies, dismal patient outcomes, and high healthcare costs.
Fluorescence guided surgery (FGS) has emerged as a promising technique to enhance intraoperative visualization of tumors and may help reduce the …
An Improved Logarithmic Ratio-Product Type Estimator For Mean Modeling And Estimation Under Neutrosophic Uncertainty, Anchal Yadav, Mukesh Kumar
An Improved Logarithmic Ratio-Product Type Estimator For Mean Modeling And Estimation Under Neutrosophic Uncertainty, Anchal Yadav, Mukesh Kumar
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
In classical statistics, population mean estimation generally assumes precise and determinate data along with known auxiliary information. However, in real-world situations where observations are imprecise or expressed in interval form, such as temperature variations or financial market data, classical approaches become less effective. To address this limitation, neutrosophic statistics provide a more flexible framework for handling uncertainty and indeterminacy. This study proposes a neutrosophic logarithmic ratio-product type estimator for estimating the finite population mean using auxiliary information. The bias and mean squared error (MSE) of the proposed estimator are derived using a first-order approximation. Furthermore, performance evaluation is carried out …

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation establishes an integrated framework that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced metabolomics to overcome the "complexity bottleneck" in microbial engineering, specifically addressing the global crises of plastic waste and carbon emissions. By framing the research within the complex biosystems for effective bioproduction and bioremediation, this work develops novel strategies to engineer and analyze biological systems for a circular bioeconomy. In the "Build" phase (Chapter 2), the study addresses the instability of synthetic microbial consortia. By utilizing calcium-alginate hydrogel compartmentalization, the research successfully decouples the growth of the phototroph Synechococcus elongatus from its heterotrophic partners (P. putida and Y. …
Inference-Time Scaling For Robust And Adaptive Computational Imaging, Yuyang Hu
Inference-Time Scaling For Robust And Adaptive Computational Imaging, Yuyang Hu
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Computational imaging has transformed fields such as medical imaging, computational photography, and remote sensing by combining physical measurement models with advanced image reconstruction algorithms. Two major paradigms have driven significant progress: model-based deep learning (MBDL), which integrates learned priors with physics-based data consistency, and generative models, especially diffusion models, which capture complex image distributions and enable posterior sampling for uncertainty quantification. Despite their success, most existing methods still operate under static inference: they rely on fixed pretrained priors, predetermined sampling procedures, and a fixed forward model during reconstruction. This rigidity limits their robustness in the presence of distribution shift, complex …

The development of sustainable hybrid natural-fiber composites provides a practical way toward lightweight materials with tailored mechanical and thermal performance. In this study, Bombax ceiba (BC)/jute hybrid epoxy composites were fabricated using a stacked preform followed by compression molding, and the effect of fiber blending ratio on mechanical, thermal, and microstructural properties was systematically investigated. Three compositions-40/60, 50/50, and 60/40 BC/jute by weight-were evaluated. Mechanical testing showed that the J50 composite, with a balanced fiber ratio, exhibited superior flexural strength and impact resistance, indicating effective hybrid synergy and improved stress transfer between fibers and the matrix. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that …

Quantifying Evapotranspiration From The Wetlands In The Peripheral Area Between The Most Downstream Stream Gages And The Open Water Body Of The Great Salt Lake, Motasem S. Abualqumboz, David G. Tarboton
Publications
Study region: The eastern peripheral area between the most downstream stream gages and the open water body of the Great Salt Lake (GSL), located in northern Utah within the semiarid western United States (US).
Study focus: As GSL levels decline, the eastern peripheral area is expanding, exposing former lakebed, much of which has transitioned into natural and managed wetlands. Evapotranspiration (ET) from these wetlands consumes water that would otherwise reach the open-water lake body, yet these losses remain poorly quantified and directly affect the GSL water balance. This study compares a water-balance-based ET estimate for the wetlands in the peripheral …
Molecular Catalysts For Electrochemical Nitrogen Activation Toward Sustainable Ammonia Synthesis, Jin-Xiu Han, Hao Xue, Xian-Biao Fu
Molecular Catalysts For Electrochemical Nitrogen Activation Toward Sustainable Ammonia Synthesis, Jin-Xiu Han, Hao Xue, Xian-Biao Fu
Journal of Electrochemistry
Homogeneous electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) provides a powerful framework to interrogate molecular nitrogen-fixation pathways under mild conditions. By tuning the metal center, ligand architecture, and reaction medium, these systems enable capturing key intermediates and delivering mechanistic insight at the molecular-level resolution. Nevertheless, advances remain constrained by highly reduced operating potentials, intense competition from the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), limited durability in turnover, and inadequate long-term stability.
In this review, we take electron delivery to the molecular active site as the guiding principle for organizing homogeneous electrochemical N2 activation and transformation. We classify reported systems into direct electron transfer …

Water-Driven Solid Electrolyte Interphase Governs Continuous-Flow Ammonia Electrosynthesis, Peng-Bo Liu, Sheng-Liang Zhai, Ji Huang, Zhong-Shuo Zhang, Jie Zeng, Shao-Feng Li
Journal of Electrochemistry
Flow-cell architectures have emerged as a powerful platform for continuous and stable lithium-mediated nitrogen reduction (Li-NRR), enabling ambient-condition electrochemical ammonia synthesis and offering a promising alternative to Haber-Bosch processes. However, Li-NRR is exceptionally sensitive to trace water, and even minor variations in water content can profoundly alter interfacial chemistry. Here, we systematically investigate how initial water concentration affects Li-NRR performance in a continuous-flow cell. Excess water drives the formation of a thick solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer, which may impede nitrogen access to metallic lithium and hinder lithium-ion transport. As a result, the ammonia Faradaic efficiency collapses from ~61% to …

High-entropy oxides composed of Ni, Co, Fe, W, and a fifth transition element (Mo, Mn, or Cu) were integrated into electrospun polyacrylonitrile nanofibers to form porous nitrogen-doped carbon membranes for the oxygen evolution reaction. Gas-assisted electrospinning enabled uniform dispersion of high-entropy oxide nanoparticles within the polyacrylonitrile matrix, while calcination at 800°C produced conductive carbon frameworks embedding crystalline high-entropy oxides with homogeneous elemental distribution. Structural and surface analyses confirmed the preservation of high-entropy oxide phases, catalytic graphitization of the carbon matrix, and strong interfacial bonding between metal oxides and carbon. Among all compositions, Mo-HEO@NC exhibited the lowest overpotential (≈240 mV at …

The design and main parameters of a plasma–chemical reactor containing two compartments are presented. One compartment houses a vacuum-arc evaporator, while the other houses a planar magnetron. The compartments are separated by a diaphragm with a dosing slot for injecting copper vapor into the TiN synthesis compartment. The conditions for the synthesis of superhard TiN-Cu composite coatings are experimentally determined. Based on established process parameters for TiN synthesis in a nitrogen-containing plasma by Ti evaporation using a vacuum-arc discharge, it is proposed to apply TiN-Cu coatings by injecting Cu vapor into the TiN synthesis area and sputtering Cu using a …

Modified Anodic Stripping Voltammetry For In Situ Analysis Of Liquid Metal Composition In Molten Salt Electrorefining Systems, James H. Manner
Reviews, Analyses, and Instructional Studies in Electrochemistry (RAISE)
The development of in-situ analytical techniques for high-temperature molten salt systems is critical for advancing electrorefining in nuclear fuel recycling and metallurgical purification. This study proposes Modified Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (MASV), using a “dip-and-strip” approach where a tungsten electrode captures molten Sn–Ni alloy before stripping in LiCl–KCl–CaCl₂ at 415 °C. OCP results showed rapid loss of the metal layer due to poor wetting, and stripping peaks gave compositions inconsistent with the alloy, likely reflecting Sn/Sn²⁺ and Sn²⁺/Sn⁴⁺ redox processes. These results highlight interfacial limitations and the need for improved electrode materials and surface modification.

Mechanisms Behind The Impacts Of Co2 Concentration On Microbial Methanogenesis In Coal Seams, Wang Junyu, Liu Bingjun, Jiang Xiangqing, Chen Ruifeng, Xue Sheng, Zhou Wanlong, Yang Yundu
Coal Geology & Exploration
Background Coal seams exhibit the extensive distribution of a variety of indigenous functional microorganisms. Among these, some archaea enable methane metabolism using CO2 as a substrate, providing the potential for the biological CO2 storage and utilization in coal seams. However, conventional studies focus primarily on the degradation characteristics of coal matrix, leading to a lack of a systematic understanding of the mechanisms governing the adjustment of the methanation process in CO2-bearing environments. Methods This study investigated the bituminous coals with a high volatile content in the Huainan mining area. Using laboratory-scale experiments on methanogenesis through anaerobic …

Fire is a naturally occurring element in many ecosystems which can have both positive and negative effects. However, in recent years the frequency of the fires and the area they affect has increased. The rapid spread of wildland fires coupled with the limited resources available to forest services to manage wildland fires highlights the urgency for accurate prediction of fire spread. Fire prediction models enable the fire management services to predict the spread of fire and prioritize firefighting efforts more effectively. Understanding reactions and mechanisms occurring during wildland fires improves the fire prediction models. During wildland fires, the biomass covering …
