Type-B Energetic Processes: Their Identification And Implications, James Weifu Lee
Type-B Energetic Processes: Their Identification And Implications, James Weifu Lee
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
We have now identified two thermodynamically distinct types (A and B) of energetic processes naturally occurring on Earth. Type-A energy processes, such as classical heat engines, apparently well follow the second law of thermodynamics; Type-B energy processes, such as the newly discovered thermotrophic function that isothermally utilizes environmental heat energy to perform useful work in driving ATP synthesis, follow the first law of thermodynamics (conservation of mass and energy) but do not have to be constrained by the second law, owing to their special asymmetric functions. Several Type-B energy processes such as asymmetric function-gated isothermal electricity production and epicatalysis have …

Ballast water released from ships into coastal environments has been identified as a mechanism that introduces contaminants of concern into coastal ecosystems. This study investigates the treatment processes employed at a ballast water treatment facility in Valdez, Alaska, that remove hydrocarbons from unsegregated ballast water. Specifically, the aim is to quantify and characterize hydrocarbons of emerging concern, known as dissolved hydrocarbon oxidation products (HOPs) and heavy metals (HMs), throughout the treatment process. Specialized analytical techniques were employed, such as non-volatile dissolved organic carbon analysis, fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance-mass spectrometry, and inductively coupled plasma triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. Results …

Developing An Immunomodulatory Strategy Using Biophysical Cues To Modulate Macrophage Phenotype For Fracture Healing And Bone Regeneration, Harshini Suresh Kumar
Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering
Chronic inflammation is a major cause of the pathogenesis of musculoskeletal diseases such as fragility, fracture, and nonunion. Studies have shown that modulating the immune phenotype of macrophages from proinflammatory to pro-healing can heal recalcitrant bone defects. Current therapeutic strategies predominantly apply biochemical cues, which often lack target specificity, and controlling their release kinetics in vivo is challenging spatially and temporally. We have developed a magnetic iron-oxide nanocomplexes (MNC)-based therapy for resolving chronic inflammation in the context of promoting fracture healing. Here, we show that MNC internalized macrophages, when coupled with an external magnetic field, can exert an intracellular magnetic …
Relating Temperature, Sleep, And Pathology In Mouse Models Of Alzheimer's Disease, Jun Wang
Relating Temperature, Sleep, And Pathology In Mouse Models Of Alzheimer's Disease, Jun Wang
Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering
It is well established that sleep plays an important role in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology. There is growing evidence that sleep issues may accelerate AD pathology by interrupting the physiological clearance of amyloid‐β (Aβ) from the brain, which mainly occurs in normal sleep. As the over-accumulation of amyloid‐β (Aβ) is believed to lead the cascade effect that eventually causes neurodegeneration in AD patients, development of therapeutic strategies for improving sleep quality may help slow disease progression. It is well documented that the composition and dynamics of sleep are sensitive to changes in ambient temperature. We therefore developed a sleep enhancement …

Development Of Iron Oxide Nanozyme For Cancer Therapy, Zhongchao Yi
Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering
Cancer therapies that leverage reactive oxygen species (ROS) have shown potential for cancer inhibition due to their ability to induce oxidative stress in tumor cells. Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) have garnered significant attention as a promising platform for ROS-dependent disease treatment, owing to their remarkable biocompatibility and Fenton catalytic activity. However, the low catalytic activity of IONPs has been a major hurdle in their clinical translation. To overcome this challenge, IONPs of different compositions are examined for their Fenton reaction under pharmacologically relevant conditions in this work. The results show that wüstite (Fe1-xO) nanoparticles exhibit higher catalytic activity …

Language Models For Rare Disease Information Extraction: Empirical Insights And Model Comparisons, Shashank Gupta
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
End-to-end relation extraction (E2ERE) is a crucial task in natural language processing (NLP) that involves identifying and classifying semantic relationships between entities in text. This thesis compares three paradigms for end-to-end relation extraction (E2ERE) in biomedicine, focusing on rare diseases with discontinuous and nested entities. We evaluate Named Entity Recognition (NER) to Relation Extraction (RE) pipelines, sequence-to-sequence models, and generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) models using the RareDis information extraction dataset. Our findings indicate that pipeline models are the most effective, followed closely by sequence-to-sequence models. GPT models, despite having eight times as many parameters, perform worse than sequence-to-sequence models and …
Multiscale Fiber Remodeling In The Heart Using A Finite Element Framework, Mohammad Mehri
Multiscale Fiber Remodeling In The Heart Using A Finite Element Framework, Mohammad Mehri
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
The organization of myofibers and extra cellular matrix within the myocardium plays a significant role in defining cardiac function. When pathological events occur, such as myocardial infarction (MI) or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), this organization can become disrupted, leading to alteration in pumping performance. The current study proposes a multiscale finite element (FE) framework to determine realistic fiber distributions in the left ventricle (LV). This is achieved by implementing a stress-based fiber reorientation law, which seeks to align the fibers with local traction vectors, such that contractile force and load bearing capabilities are maximized. By utilizing the total stress (passive and …
Characterization Of Heterogeneous Material Architectures Through X-Ray Computed Micro-Tomography, Cameron Brewer
Characterization Of Heterogeneous Material Architectures Through X-Ray Computed Micro-Tomography, Cameron Brewer
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Low-density carbon-phenolic composites, such as phenolic impregnated carbon ablator (PICA), possess meso-, micro-, and nano-pores making the structure of the resin difficult to characterize. X-ray Computed Tomography (XRCT) is a widely ac- cepted method for characterizing the carbon fiber preform, yet this technique is often insufficient for visualizing the resin because of its minimal attenuation of the incident x-ray beam. Phase Contrast Retrieval (PCR) reconstruction considers not only the linear attenuation coefficient, but also the refractive indices of the constituent materials. This research leverages phase contrast tomography to characterize the meso- and micro-structure of the porous resin phase with a …

Implications Of Nanopesticides On Downstream Wetland Ecosystems, Kiley Power
Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering
Nanopesticides are thought to be a promising course of action for reducing agricultural impacts on the environment, however, little is known regarding the fate and transport of nanopesticides, specifically their influence on downstream wetland ecosystems. The objective of this study was to assess the implications of a nano-Cu fungicide (Kocide 3000) and a neonicotinoid insecticide (imidacloprid) on downstream wetland habitats, particularly their effects on wetland nutrient cycling, using fifteen mesocosm wetlands. The complex interactions between nitrogen, Kocide 3000, and imidacloprid were found to increase nitrate removal rates, decrease phosphate removal rates, and inhibit nitrogen uptake in below-ground biomass. Each treatment, …
The Characterization, Assessment, And Shear Strength Of Turfgrass Soil In North American Thoroughbred Racing, Peter Schmitt
The Characterization, Assessment, And Shear Strength Of Turfgrass Soil In North American Thoroughbred Racing, Peter Schmitt
Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering
Minimizing catastrophic injuries to racehorses, which also protects the riders, is critical for the future of the Thoroughbred racing industry. While the causes of catastrophic injuries are multifactorial, the condition of the racing surface is one of only a few factors that affects all horses in competition. Horse racing surfaces must retain enough shear strength to support the hoof of a Thoroughbred at a gallop. Turfgrass racing surfaces also require healthy turf to reinforce the footing while also achieving a high infiltration rate to allow races to run on the turf soon after or even during rain. This research is …

The Efficacy Of Wetland Treatment Systems Used To Treat Runoff Mixtures From Different Landscapes Across Kentucky, Emily Nottingham
Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering
The overarching goal was to improve our understanding of the cumulative effect of increased use and occurrence of commonly detected contaminants of potential concern (CPCs) on nitrogen (N) transformation processes in wetlands. The central hypothesis was that those various mixtures of nutrients and CPCs entering treatment wetlands impact N removal pathways. The first study assessed the current state of the literature on the implications to N removal in wetlands in the presence of pesticides and antibiotics. 181 primary studies were identified. Removal efficiencies for nitrate varied widely across the studies, with CPCs impacting microbial communities. A knowledge gap remains in …

Valorization Of Bourbon Distilling Waste Using Thermal Conversion Processes For Nutrient-Rich Food Products, Tosin Olayemi Olanrewaju
Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering
The Commonwealth of Kentucky accounts for over 95% of global bourbon production. A primary byproduct of bourbon production is stillage, which has a very high moisture content (91–94%) and high biochemical oxygen demand, making it challenging to manage. The recent expansion of the bourbon industry has heightened environmental concerns regarding the best methods to handle this byproduct. Dewatering and drying of stillage produce distillers' spent grains (DSG-B), which are rich in dietary fiber and protein and could serve as an excellent source of functional fiber in human nutrition.
This study examined the approach for dewatering, drying, inclusion of DSG-B as …

Nanosecond Pulsed Electric Fields Increase Antibiotic Susceptibility In Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, Alexandra E. Chittams-Miles, Areej Malik, Erin B. Purcell, Claudia Muratori
Bioelectrics Publications
Staphylococcus aureus is the leading cause of skin and soft-tissue infections (SSTIs). SSTIs caused by bacteria resistant to antimicrobials, such as methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), are increasing in incidence and have led to higher rates of hospitalization. In this study, we measured MRSA inactivation by nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEF), a promising new cell ablation technology. Our results show that treatment with 120 pulses of 600 ns duration (28 kV/cm, 1 Hz), caused modest inactivation, indicating cellular damage. We anticipated that the perturbation created by nsPEF could increase antibiotic efficacy if nsPEF were applied as a co-treatment. To test this …

Glaucoma Diagnosis Using Hybrid Neural Encoder Decoder Based Unet Hybrid Inception, Akanksha Bali, Vibhakar Mansotra
Mansoura Engineering Journal
The anatomy of the retinal fundus picture, which includes the optic disc, affects how glaucoma characteristics are extracted. One of the main causes of blindness in the globe is glaucoma. Correct glaucoma screening in its early phases is difficult since the condition only becomes apparent when its symptoms are severe. If glaucoma is not treated, the optic nerve head (ONH) will be harmed, resulting in vision loss. Nevertheless, there are currently not enough eye experts accessible, and eye screening is personal, time-consuming and labor-intensive. Therefore, this is a real issue that can be addressed by automatically diagnosing glaucoma using deep …

This study aims at developing a novel assessment tool that can quantitatively evaluate the level of biophilia integration in healthcare facilities. The developed assessment tool helps to address the difficulty of biophilia quantification in the built environment due to the broad nature of the biophilia concept. The methodological approach for the tool depends on employing biophilic design patterns as a basis for biophilia, where these patterns are correlated to a group of biophilia-related features of the WELL Building Standard. This correlation is attained through a list of Integrated Design Guidelines (IDGs) that is proposed to act as an intermediate ground …

Cellular Level Changes Induced In Cancer Cells Due To Microgravity, Sai Deepika Reddy Yaram
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The increase in human activity in space has revealed several kinds of physiological challenges brought on by the absence of Earth's gravitational pull. NASA observed that during spaceflight, astronauts experience a 1-1.5% monthly loss in the mineral density of weight-bearing bones, with rehabilitation efforts on Earth often proving ineffective. This issue extends to muscles, the neuro vestibular system, the cardiovascular system, and vision. Cancer has emerged as a significant cause of mortality among astronauts, with studies up to 2017 showing that 41.3% of natural cause deaths among U.S. astronauts were due to cancer, primarily due to space radiation exposure. Cancer …
