A Kinetic Study Of The Reactions Of Poly-L-Lysine With 1-Halo-2, 4-Dinitrobenzenes, Raymond K. Rakowitz
A Kinetic Study Of The Reactions Of Poly-L-Lysine With 1-Halo-2, 4-Dinitrobenzenes, Raymond K. Rakowitz
Theses
The kinetics of the reactions of poly-L-lysine with 1-Fluoro, 1-Chloro, 1-Bromo, and 1-Iodo-2,4-Dinitrobenzenes have been studied. The investigation was done at 25°C as a function of pH and concentration. In all cases the rate of reaction increased as pH increased. In the reactions of Chloro, Bromo, and Iododinitrobenzenes with Polylysine the reaction rate is the composite of two rates; one associated with the random coil and one associated with the helical conformation. For the reaction of Fluorodinitrobenzene with Polylysine the reaction rate is the composite of four rates; two associated with the random coil and two associated with the helical …

A Mathematical Model Of The Dispersion Of A Concentrated Substance For Use In The Great Salt Lake's South Arm, Anthony O. Rughellis
A Mathematical Model Of The Dispersion Of A Concentrated Substance For Use In The Great Salt Lake's South Arm, Anthony O. Rughellis
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The ability to predict the dispersion of substances in the Great Salt Lake is a requisite towards making responsible management decisions relating to uses of the lake. The lake is a complex terminal body of water and will require a fairly sophisticated mathematical model to properly simulate the dispersion process in the lake. This finite element convection-dispersion model is a first step towards developing a comprehensive model.
The model provides a finite element solution to the two-dimensional convection-dispersion equation and is capable of simulating steady or unsteady-state situations. It utilizes a known velocity field, dispersion coefficients, an introduced substance concentration, …

A Simple, Inexpensive Spinning-Drop Interfacial Tensiometer, Humoud S. Al-Rabiah
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
A spinning-drop interfacial tensiometer was designed, built, and tested. The device is very simple, inexpensive to build, and easy to operate compared with other spinningdrop tensiometers.
The tensiometer measures the interfacial tension of liquid-liquid or liquid-vapor systems. Interfacial tensions of three systems were measured to test the device: water-heptane, glycerol-heptane, and glycerol-air.
Experimental results agree with literature values within one percent for the glycerol-heptane system. The variations among the values for the liquid-liquid systems at different rotational speeds are within six percent. Repeated experiments with different drop sizes show that drop size of the glycerol-air system may affect the results. …

Desublimation Of Water Vapor At Low Pressure And Evaporative Freezing Of Seawater, Sun Sea Pao
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
The Vacuum-Freezing Vapor-Desublimation and High Pressure Ice-Melting Process has been developed since 1972. In 1976, Mr. T. C. Chung finished a theoretical study of Low Pressure Water Vapor Desublimation Operation. The writer was a co-worker of Mr. Chung, and had worked with him for the study for four months. The information collected in Mr. Chung's thesis was borrowed and edited as Chapters 1 and 2 in the present thesis. Mr. Chung's theory predicts the rate of water vapor desublimation as a function of the difference between operating temperature and desublimer wall temperature. In the present thesis, experimental rates of desublimation …

Predicted And Measured Drainable Porosities For Field Soils, R. W. Skaggs, Larry G. Wells, S. R. Ghate
Predicted And Measured Drainable Porosities For Field Soils, R. W. Skaggs, Larry G. Wells, S. R. Ghate
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Experiments were conducted on large field cores to determine the relationship between drainage volume and water table depth for five soils. The measured drainage volumes were less than predicted from the soil water characteristics for three soils, but were in good agreement for the other two. Drainable porosities were calculated from both theoretical and experimental drainage volume-water table depth relationships by assuming that the unsaturated zone is essentially 'drained to equilibrium, with the water table. The experimental drainable porosities thus obtained were less than predicted.
Drainable porosities for drainage in two-dimensions were calculated from experimental results for one-dimension by assuming …

Sld Potamology Study (S-9), Jerome A. Westphal, Samuel P. Clemence
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Foreword
In this report, the authors discuss factors which relate to flow characteristics of the Middle Mississippi River and its major tributaries. The variety of ways in which man and nature interact to affect the hydrologic regime of the study area are almost infinite. Furthermore, the intensity and direction of man's activity is non-uniform with respect to both time and space. Therefore, on the scale of the study area, the authors assert that 1) it is difficult to verify associations between specific human actions and river responses and 2) at this time, it is impossible to do so in a …

Based on the need to monitor nitrates because of the 1977 modifications, as well as upon the original EPA provisions for ground water monitoring, the studies reported in this thesis were initiated. The objectives of this investigation were as follows: 1. To monitor four wells within the influence of the rapid infiltration pilot units, as well as two control wells located beyond the influence of the units, to determine any substantial changes in ground water quality, which might be attributed to the rapid infiltration pilot unit operation; 2. To specifically examine the nitrogen data collected from the perforated drains in …
Treatment Capabilities Of A Rapid Infiltration Pilot Unit Treating Stabilization Pond Effluent, Richard G. Seas
Treatment Capabilities Of A Rapid Infiltration Pilot Unit Treating Stabilization Pond Effluent, Richard G. Seas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In October, 1972, Congress passed PL 92-500, "Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 1; which is designed to upgrade the quality of the nation's water. The act requires the formulation of effluent standards that would require use of “best practicable treatment”. The effluent standards are to require use of the "best available" technology by July 1, 1983 (1). PL 92-500 requires the Environmental Protection Agency Administrator to publish information explaining which treatment techniques may be used to meet the requirement of "best practicable treatment". Land application of wastewater has been designated as a viable alternative to traditional treatment …
An In-Plant Waste Survey Of An Egg-Processing Plant, James R. Schultz
An In-Plant Waste Survey Of An Egg-Processing Plant, James R. Schultz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The total number of eggs produced.in the United States has increased from 40 billion in 1940 to approximately 70 billion in 196 7 (1-265). It is expected that the demand for processed eggs will increase from ten percent of the total production in the 1960's to over 30 percent in the 1970's (2-805). The increase in use of processed eggs will undoubtedly result in an increase in production wastes. To estimate the water pollution potential of egg wastes and to provide the information necessary for procurement of waste discharge permits, knowledge of the volume, strength and treatability of egg-processing wastes …
The Effect Of Potassium Permanganate On The Removal Of Iron And Manganese From Ground Water, Mohammad Reza Farvardin
The Effect Of Potassium Permanganate On The Removal Of Iron And Manganese From Ground Water, Mohammad Reza Farvardin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For the past three years or so, a gradual migration of iron and manganese deposits has been observed in the water mains to the west of the East Water Treatment Plant of Brookings, South Dakota. These deposits have been gradually migrating further westward from the plant (8). Routine analyses of the treated water from the East Plant indicate that the iron and manganese levels are within the USPHS recommended limits (9). Consequently, conclusive evidence that this plant is the source of the problem does not exist. However, the analyses are normally conducted on samples collected shortly before backwashing the filters. …

A Study Of A Buoyancy Balanced Gas-Liquid Contacting System, Jaw-Ruey Leu
A Study Of A Buoyancy Balanced Gas-Liquid Contacting System, Jaw-Ruey Leu
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
In a conventional gas-liquid contacting system that provides a long gas-liquid contact time, a pressurized gas is released at the bottom of a pool of liquid to form gas bubbles; the bubbles move upward through the liquid and break at the surface of the liquid. A large amount of work is spent in pressurizing the gas. Even though it is theoretically possible to recover work from rising bubbles, a work recovery scheme has not been incorporated into a conventional system.
A buoyancy-balanced gas-liquid contacting system concept has recently been introduced. The system comprises two processing zones filled with a liquid, …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Analytic methods are developed for determining the attenuation characteristics of light beams propagating through ensembles of scattering particles including those with complex index of refraction. The methods are applicable to a wide range of practical particulate systems, and the results are expressed explicitly in terms of elementary functions. Propagation through fog and clouds is considered as an example, and it is found that absorption by the liquid lengths. water in such ensembles affects strongly the extinction for ir wave-lengths
