A simulation model was developed to estimate the effect of deficit irrigation upon crop yield. The model was designed to provide relative yield estimates for numerous combinations of irrigation system, crop growth and irrigation management parameters. A daily soil moisture balance was used to predict evaporation and transpiration from which crop yields were estimated. Gross irrigation water requirements were estimated from net irrigation requirements, irrigation efficiencies, irrigation system limitations, and effective rainfall. Crop production functions that use physically defined parameters were also developed to relate crop yields to gross irrigation requirements. The production functions worked well on a limited test …

The research was concerned with the kinetics and mechanisms of BOD reduction due to pressurization. The initial investigations involved attempts to reproduce and interpret the results of previous investigators. Thereafter, actual wastewater samples were pressurized and changes in the wastewater characteristics were analyzed and recorded. Based on the findings, possible mechanisms for creating the changes noted were proposed.

To test the mechanisms considered, samples of pure compounds were prepared and pressurized. The results of this analysis eliminated all of the mechanisms but the actual one. The mechanism responsible for changes in BOD profile under pressure conditions is the hydrolysis of …

An epidemiological survey was performed that included the area surrounding a former Department of Energy thorium processing and disposal facility. This facility processed monazite sands to obtain thorium under Federal Government contracts from 1941-1973.

New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection radiological surveys had shown elevated radiation levels at the Site and in the vicinity of the plant. The area was divided into sections according to distance from the site and from Sheffield Brook, which is also contaminated. Questionnaires were mailed to 400 families, with 112 responses. These represent 362 people.

Relative Responses and Calibration Factors were developed for several volatile organic (mostly chlorinated) priority pollutant species in order to use one single stable compound (e.g.Benzene) for daily instrument calibration. This would replace the procedure of using a standard mixture of target compounds (25-35). This is of particular advantage because the standard mixture may not have all species stable or may show loss of some components relative to others due to wall adsorption in the standard (compressed gas) stainless steel cylinder.

Metallothionein (MT) and glutathione (GSH) have been shown in mammalian research to play a role in the sequestration and depuration of mercury. The sulfhydryl groups on both these peptides have a strong affinity for mercury, MT for Hg²⁺ and GSH for CH₃Hg⁺. In this study, killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus) were force-fed one piece of squid laced with labelled mercuric nitrate to give a final food concentration of 20 ppm ²⁰³Hg²⁺ and 0.03 -0.05 µg g-1 Hg²⁺ total dose. First a "Universal" calibration curve for gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was construc-ted using different molecular weight standards of PMMA and MMA-HEMA co-polymers. By measuring the viscosity of the different molecular weight solutions and calculating the Vr, (retention volume), from GPC data, plots of In [ η ] Mw against Vr and In Mw against Vr are obtained. The metalE included were : cobalt, copper, indium, iron, manganese, molybdenum, arsenic and cadmium. A total of 800 eggs were used for the study. The system measures the respiratory exchange in rats in a controlled experiment. An interface unit provides data, received from several measurement instruments such as gas analyzers, an electronic flowmeters, electronic thermometer and an electronic hygrometer, to the computer. The data is gathered from different chambers in a multiplexed mode.

The computer samples the chambers sequentially and prints out the results and stores them on the disk. The sampling duration of each chamber and the number of the rats to be tested can be programmed. Numerical solutions for determining the freezing front location vs time relation in cryosurgery are obtained by utilizing the heat transfer computer program TRUMP, which employs the explicit finite difference algorithm. Rock boring mollusks and sponges are infesting the concrete cylinder piles supporting the Juaymah NGL Trestle located in the western Arabian Gulf. The calcareous aggregate used in pile fabrication provides a favorable substrate for borer activity. Rock boring organisms are common in the Arabian Gulf and typically inhabit nearshore reefs and exposed limestone bottom areas. Although the entire trestle wetted area is subject to attack, infestation is concentrated in the area adjacent to reefs and limestone, on the down current pile face and near the water surface. Selection criteria for reduced pressure center-pivot irrigation systems are developed. An analysis of the combined effects of the application rate characteristics or center-pivot irrigation systems and the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) soil intake family curves is used to determine the maximum depth of water which could be applied per irrigation for various types of soils and sprinkler packages. These irrigation depths are used to determine guidelines for proper selection of reduced pressure center-pivot systems. The results can be used as a general guide to determine if a particular system may have a runoff problem under a given situation.

Summary and Conclusions: Laboratory analyses of sediment samples recovered from Deer Creek Reservoir showed the sediments to have amoderate potential for serving as a source of phosphorus (P) for the overlying water solumn under anaerobic conditions. This source could account for the occurrence or exacerbation of blue-green algal blooms in the upper end of the reservoir when the sediment surface becomes anaerobic late in the summer. It could also delay the response of the reservoir to programs that decrease external P loading, if the upper end of the reservoir still has large enough algal blooms to render the sediment-water interface …

Proper management of surface and groundwater resources is important for their prolonged and a beneficial use. Within the Weber Delta area there has existed a continual decline in the piezometric surface of the deep confined aquifer over the last 40 years. This decline ranges from approximately 20 feet along the eastern shore of the Great Salt Lake to 50 feet along in the vicinity of Hill Air Force Base.
