Nonuniformity Correction Of Infrared Image Sequences Using The Constant-Statistics Constraint, John G. Harris, Yu Ming Chiang Jan 1999

Nonuniformity Correction Of Infrared Image Sequences Using The Constant-Statistics Constraint, John G. Harris, Yu Ming Chiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Using clues from neurobiological adaptation, we have developed the constant-statistics (CS) algorithm for nonuniformity correction of IRFPA's and other imaging arrays. The CS model provides an efficient implementation that can also eliminate much of the ghosting artifact that plagues all scene-based nonuniformity correction (NUC) algorithms. The CS algorithm with deghosting is demonstrated on synthetic and real infrared (IR) sequences and shown to improve the overall accuracy of the correction procedure.

Analog Hardware Implementation Of Continuous-Time Adaptive Filter Structures, John G. Harris, Jui Kuo Juan, Jose C. Principe Jan 1999

Analog Hardware Implementation Of Continuous-Time Adaptive Filter Structures, John G. Harris, Jui Kuo Juan, Jose C. Principe

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have implemented a four-tap adaptive filter in a continuous-time analog VLSI circuit. Since an ideal delay is impossible to implement in continuous-time hardware, we implemented the delay line as a cascade of low-pass filters (called the gamma filter). Since many years of research in our lab has shown that the gamma filter outperforms the ideal delay line for a wide range of applications, the gamma filter should not be considered merely a crude approximation of the ideal delay line. We show measured results from an analog chip that solves the problem of system identification-identifying an unknown linear circuit from …

Assembly And Analysis Of Extended Human Genomic Contig Regions, Eric C. Rouchka, David J. States

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The Human Genome Project (HGP) has led to the deposit of human genomic sequence in the form of sequenced clones into various databases such as the DNA Data Bank of Japan (DDBJ) (Tateno and Gojobori, 1997), the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) Nucleotide Sequence Database (Stoesser, et. al., 1999), and GenBank (Benson, et. al., 1998). Many of these sequenced clones occur in regions where sequencing has taken place either within the same sequencing center or other centers throughout the world. The assembly of extended segments of genomic sequence by looking at overlapping end segments is desired and is currently availabel …

Application Of The Fdtd Method For The Analysis Of Finite-Sized Phased Array Microstrip Antennas, Javier Gomez Tagle Rangel Jan 1999

Application Of The Fdtd Method For The Analysis Of Finite-Sized Phased Array Microstrip Antennas, Javier Gomez Tagle Rangel

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method has gained tremendous popularity in the past decade as a tool for solving Maxwell's equations. Phased Array Antennas find several applications including mobile communications ( cellular, personal communication systems and networks), satellite communications, global positioning system (GPS), aeronautical and radar systems. This dissertation describes the application of the FDTD method for calculating broadband characteristics of finite-sized phased array antennas consisting of microstrip elements fed with coaxial probes.

The characterization of such antennas is dependent upon the development of simulation tools that can accurately model general topologies including wires, dielectrics, conductors lumped elements and metallic strips. …

Loss Detection In The Dairy Industry., Michael Quealy Jan 1999

Loss Detection In The Dairy Industry., Michael Quealy

Theses

In any waste management program, the primary objective must be minimizing product loss without having an affect on product quality. Good waste management is recognized as good manufacturing practice and optimizes the processes to gain the highest possible yield from the available raw materials. A good waste management program must involve the daily monitoring of effluent from the plant for volume and strength. This data needs to be analyzed sufficiently to obtain clear pictures of what problems are present and where they are originating. If this is achieved then the task of reducing the product loss is made much easier. …

Optimal Stimulus Electrode Dipole Orientation, Robert B. Szlavik, Hubert De Bruin Jan 1999

Optimal Stimulus Electrode Dipole Orientation, Robert B. Szlavik, Hubert De Bruin

Biomedical Engineering

The elicited M-Wave that results from the surface stimulation of the median nerve is highly dependent upon the geometric orientation of the stimulus electrode dipole. This phenomenon could make standardization of M-Wave measurements between tests performed on a single subject problematic. We present an experimental paradigm that illustrates this variability in terms of an estimate of the slope of the M-Wave peak potential versus stimulus current amplitude and the minimum stimulus current required to consistently elicit a minimal response. The design of an automated instrument for selecting the optimal stimulus electrode dipole orientation based on the electrode orientation experiment is …

A Biologically Inspired Connectionist Model For Image Feature Extraction In 2d Pattern Recognition, Cihan H. Dagli, Raymond K. Chafin

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new edge detection method is presented which borrows from recent research into primate vision biology, and offers improved noise performance over classical methods. Beginning with spatio-temporal shunting models for retinal cones, horizontal cells, bipolar cells, and retinal ganglions, a set of simplified steady-state solutions are developed which lend themselves to efficient computation on standard computer equipment. The retinal model output is found to be nominally equivalent to the classical edge detector, but is produced differently. A simplified model of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) has been produced. Taking the output of the retinal model, the LGN simple cell and …

Final General Management Plan Environmental Impact Statement

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

This Final General Management Plan / Environmental Impact Statement presents three alternatives for the future of the Missouri National Recreational River: a continuation of existing (conditions (no-action) alternative, a resource protection/recreation (preferred) alternative emphasizing protection and enhancement of biologic values and the history and culture of the area, and a recreational emphasis alternative. In both action alternatives, the Corps of Engineers (COE) and the National Park Service (NPS) would manage the area through a cooperative agreement. The Corps of Engineers would function as the day-la-day manager of the water-related resources, while the National Park Service would administer the land-related resources. …

The Certified Safe Farm Project In Nebraska: The First Year, Jerry Jaspersen, Susanna Von Essen, Pam List, Larry Howard, David Morgan

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Potentially preventable death, disabling injury, and serious illness are very common secondary to work in production agriculture in Nebraska and elsewhere. The traditional approach to farm safety has consisted largely of education designed to prevent traumatic injury. While education is of critical importance, additional incentives may be needed to reduce fatal and non-fatal events to an acceptable level. The Certified Safe Farm concept was developed in collaboration with two Nebraska health insurance companies. The program consists of combining an on-farm safety assessment and occupational health screening with an education program. The incentive to complete this program is to be eligible …

Nitrate Leaching In Irrigated Corn And Soybean In A Semi-Arid Climate, N. L. Klocke, Darrell G. Watts, J. P. Schneekloth, Don R. Davison, R. W. Todd, Anne M. Parkhurst

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Nitrate-nitrogen leached from the root zone of land in intensive corn production is a major groundwater contaminant in some of the intensively irrigated regions of the western Cornbelt, including central and western Nebraska. To obtain a clearer understanding of the amount and timing of nitrate leaching losses from irrigated crops, 14 monolithic percolation lysimeters were installed in 1989-1990 in sprinkler irrigated plots at the University of Nebraska’s West Central Research and Extension Center near North Platte, Nebraska. The lysimeters were used to provide a direct measure of leachate depth from continuous corn and a corn-soybean rotation. Both cropping systems were …

Wax Yield Of Grain Sorghum (Sorghum Bicolor) As Affected By Mechanical Harvesting, Threshing, And Handling Methods, K. R. Lochte-Watson, Curtis L. Weller Jan 1999

Wax Yield Of Grain Sorghum (Sorghum Bicolor) As Affected By Mechanical Harvesting, Threshing, And Handling Methods, K. R. Lochte-Watson, Curtis L. Weller

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Wax is found on the outer layer of the grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) kernel. Current harvesting and handling techniques cause abrasion and breakage, thereby potentially reducing wax yield from sorghum kernels. The purpose of this study was to determine wax yield of sorghum after mechanical harvesting and handling and to compare wax yield of whole and broken sorghum kernels. Combine threshing and auger conveying of grain caused abrasion and breakage, which reduced the wax yield by 5%. The monitored process in this experiment included a cleaning system which reduced the amount of broken kernels and sorghum particles, increasing …

The aim of this research was to show the impact of the flow conditions and variations in the aeration intensity on changes in the predicted dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations in a full-scale activated sludge reactor. The Activated Sludge Model No. 1 was used to describe the biochemical processes. The studies were performed at the Rock Creek wastewater treatment plant in Hillsboro, OR (USA). The simulation results were compared with data originating from two 24-hour experiments. The model that best reflected the spatial and diurnal distributions of the DO concentrations was the one-dimensional advection-dispersion equation with a variable overall oxygen mass …

Multiple Stochastic Learning Automata For Vehicle Path Control In An Automated Highway System, Cem Unsal, Pushkin Kachroo, John S. Bay Jan 1999

Multiple Stochastic Learning Automata For Vehicle Path Control In An Automated Highway System, Cem Unsal, Pushkin Kachroo, John S. Bay

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

This paper suggests an intelligent controller for an automated vehicle planning its own trajectory based on sensor and communication data. The intelligent controller is designed using the learning stochastic automata theory. Using the data received from on-board sensors, two automata (one for lateral actions, one for longitudinal actions) can learn the best possible action to avoid collisions. The system has the advantage of being able to work in unmodeled stochastic environments, unlike adaptive control methods or expert systems. Simulations for simultaneous lateral and longitudinal control of a vehicle provide encouraging results
