Implementation Of Cyclic Exercise Protocol On Two Study Groups - Aids And Insomnia, Ujwala G. Kalambur May 2003

Implementation Of Cyclic Exercise Protocol On Two Study Groups - Aids And Insomnia, Ujwala G. Kalambur

Theses

Traditional exercise regimens are based on maintaining a prolonged increase in heart rate, followed by a single recovery period. The Cyclic Exercise Protocol is a novel protocol that is designed to create a series of parabolic waves of exercise and recovery. This study involves the implementation of this exercise protocol on two study groups namely AIDS and Insomnia. This exercise protocol involves short bursts of exercise lasting for 60 seconds or less followed by a period of complete aerobic recovery. The underlying principle of this exercise protocol is that rest, recovery and the body's natural rhythm are important to fitness …

Addition Of A Chain-Cell Search Method And A Van Der Waals Force Model To A Particle Dynamics Code, Michael J. Sweetman May 2003

Addition Of A Chain-Cell Search Method And A Van Der Waals Force Model To A Particle Dynamics Code, Michael J. Sweetman

Theses

This project studies the implementation of a computational time saving technique and adds an additional force model into a discrete element method simulation code. Both aspects of the project are focused on increasing the versatility of an existing particle dynamics code by increasing the execution speed and available force models for simulation.

The first portion of the project consisted of adding a function to the collision detection mechanism to hash the particles into a spatial grid. This hashing function allows a search for near neighbor particles to be restricted to the space immediately adjacent to the particle of interest, thereby …

Physical Water Treatment For The Mitigation Of Mineral Fouling In Cooling-Tower Water Applications, Young I. Cho, Sunghyuk Lee, Wontae Kim, Sangho Suh

Heat Exchanger Fouling and Cleaning: Fundamentals and Applications

The physical water treatment (PWT) device is defined as a non-chemical method of water treatment utilized for the purpose of scale prevention or mitigation. Three different PWT devices, including permanent magnets, solenoid coil device, and high-voltage electrode, were used under various operating conditions. The present study proposed a bulk precipitation as the mechanism of the PWT and conducted a number of experimental tests to evaluate the performance of the PWT. The results of fouling resistances obtained in a heat transfer test section clearly demonstrated the benefit of the PWT when the PWT device was configured at an optimum condition. The …

Direct Measurement Of The Forces Required To Disrupt And Remove Fouling Deposits, W. Liu, Z. Zhang, G. K. Christian, P. J. Fryer May 2003

Direct Measurement Of The Forces Required To Disrupt And Remove Fouling Deposits, W. Liu, Z. Zhang, G. K. Christian, P. J. Fryer

Heat Exchanger Fouling and Cleaning: Fundamentals and Applications

In cleaning, the force required to disrupt the deposit and remove it from the surface tends to be inferred from flow data, rather than being known directly. A novel micromanipulation technique has been developed to measure directly the adhesive strength of food fouling deposits on a stainless steel surface. A T-shaped stainless steel probe pulls fouling deposits away from the surface to which they are attached. The apparent adhesive strength between the fouling deposits and the substrate can be measured as the work required to remove the deposits per unit area from the substrate. Tomato pastes and whey proteins have …

Fouling Of Some Canadian Crude Oils, M. Srinivasan , A. P. Watkinson

Heat Exchanger Fouling and Cleaning: Fundamentals and Applications

A thermal fouling study was undertaken using three sour Canadian crude oils. Experiments were carried out in a re-circulation fouling loop, equipped with an annular (HTRI) electrically heated probe. Fluids at pressures of about 1000-1340 kPa under a nitrogen atmosphere were re-circulated at a velocity of 0.75 m/s for periods of 48 hours, and the decline in heat transfer coefficient followed under conditions of constant heat flux. Bulk temperatures were varied over the range 200-285°C, and initial surface temperatures from 300 to 380°C. Heat fluxes were in the range of 265-485 kW/m2.

Challenges In Cleaning: Recent Developments And Future Prospects, D. I. Wilson

Heat Exchanger Fouling and Cleaning: Fundamentals and Applications

There is considerable scope for optimisation of processes subject to fouling by effective management of cleaning. The cleaning cycle starts with the (often-complex) material generated during the fouling cycle. The nature of the deposit determines the most appropriate cleaning method, which can often be optimised significantly via knowledge of the key mechanisms involved in deposit removal. Links between deposit ageing and cleanability need to be established and quantified. There is a wide range of cleaning methods available, and attention is focused here on cleaning-in-place (CIP) techniques. Modern instrumentation allows cleaning (and deposit materials behaviour) to be probed to greater degree …

Heat Exchanger Fouling and Cleaning: Fundamentals and Applications

Reducing fouling in heat exchangers during treatment of milk products is one of the great challenges in the dairy industry. One approach to mitigate fouling is to alter the surface characteristics of the heat exchangers making them less prone to protein adsorption. On this background the European project MODSTEEL was established to study the use of new modified stainless steel surfaces to control fouling of milk components. This part of the project focuses on the adsorption of b-lactoglobulin (b-Lg) from a whey protein solution on unmodified and modified 316 2R stainless steel surfaces by in situ ellipsometry under well-defined flow …

The Practical Application And Innovation Of Cleaning Technology For Heat Exchangers, George E. Saxon Jr., Richard E. Putman May 2003

The Practical Application And Innovation Of Cleaning Technology For Heat Exchangers, George E. Saxon Jr., Richard E. Putman

Heat Exchanger Fouling and Cleaning: Fundamentals and Applications

The fouling of heat exchangers not only has a negative impact on heat transfer efficiency but also may restrict the output or production capacity of the facility. Given the cooling medium and the process, heat exchangers may be lightly fouled with organic deposits or may be severely blocked from hardened process chemicals. The probability of success in cleaning the heat exchanger is dependent on the selection of the appropriate cleaning technology under the specific fouling conditions. Early identification of fouling characteristics and a fundamental knowledge of cleaning system capabilities are essential in determining the most effective cleaning technology and the …

Fouling Mitigation Using Helixchanger Heat Exchangers, Bashir I. Master, Krishnan S. Chunangad, Venkateswaran Pushpanathan May 2003

Fouling Mitigation Using Helixchanger Heat Exchangers, Bashir I. Master, Krishnan S. Chunangad, Venkateswaran Pushpanathan

Heat Exchanger Fouling and Cleaning: Fundamentals and Applications

One of the major indeterminates in the design as well as operation of heat exchangers is the rate of fouling a select heat exchanger geometry would exhibit over the operation cycles. Gradual deterioration of heat exchanger performance due to the accumulation of fouling film on the heat transfer surface is often accounted for in the form of a fouling resistance, or commonly known as the fouling factor, while determining the heat transfer surface required for a specific heat duty. More often, the fouling mechanism responsible for the deterioration of heat exchanger performance is flow-velocity dependent. Maldistribution of flow, wakes and …

Heat Exchanger Fouling and Cleaning: Fundamentals and Applications

A variety of different fouling rigs, each with its own advantages and disadvantages is available to assess crude oil fouling. In this research, fouling of three crude oils are compared, using two electrically heated annular probes with strikingly different modes of operation. The Hot Liquid Process Simulator (HLPS) was operated in single-pass mode, under creeping flow conditions for time durations of a few hours at constant surface temperature. The Portable Fouling Research Unit (PFRU) was operated at velocities a factor of 250 higher, and followed the fouling process over two or more days at constant heat flux, using re-circulation of …

Improvements And New Developments In Self-Cleaning Heat Transfer Leading To New Applications , Dick G. Klaren May 2003

Improvements And New Developments In Self-Cleaning Heat Transfer Leading To New Applications , Dick G. Klaren

Heat Exchanger Fouling and Cleaning: Fundamentals and Applications

Improvements in the design have made the fluidized bed heat exchanger better suitable for the revamp of existing vertical severely fouling heat exchangers in evaporators, crystallizers and reboilers into a self-cleaning configuration. Highly viscous non-Newtonian slurries used in mineral processing can benefit from the fluidized bed heat exchanger not only due to its self-cleaning performance, but also as a result of the shear-thinning action of the fluidized particles which dramatically lowers the viscosity of the slurry. New developments have created the possibility to design compact self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers which can compete with plate and frame exchangers.

Assessment And Modeling Of Stream Mitigation Procedures [2003], Bernadette S. Dupont, Sudhir Palle May 2003

Assessment And Modeling Of Stream Mitigation Procedures [2003], Bernadette S. Dupont, Sudhir Palle

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

As population increases, so does the need to improve and augment the road network. Construction of new roadways or modification of existing roads often requires diversion or modification of streams. If a stream is disturbed, government regulations require mitigation or compensatory replacement of the affected area in a similar environment. Stream mitigation is of particular importance in Kentucky, as Kentucky ranks second in the United States for having the most miles of waterways. Consequently, stream mitigation has become a significant factor in roadway construction costs. To date, no studies have been made to assess the execution of the mitigation plans …

Development Of An Atrophic Nonunion Model And Comparison To A Closed Healing Fracture In Rat Femur, Takeshi Kokubu, David J. Hak, Scott J. Hazelwood, A. Hari Reddi

Biomedical Engineering

Although most fractures heal, some fail to heal and become nonunions. Many animal models have been developed to study problems of fracture healing. The majority of nonunion models have involved segmental bone defects, but this may not adequately represent the biologic condition in which nonunions clinically develop. The objective of the present study is to develop a nonunion model that better simulates the clinical situation in which there is soft tissue damage including periosteal disruption and to compare this model to a standard closed fracture model utilizing identical fracture stabilization, providing a similar mechanical environment. A total of 96 three …

Analysis Of Performance Capacity Of Hand Grip Through An Integrated Learning Curve Model, Miguel Torres May 2003

Analysis Of Performance Capacity Of Hand Grip Through An Integrated Learning Curve Model, Miguel Torres

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

There are few activities or work task in the manufacturing industry that does not involve grip strength. That is why it is in the best interest of the manufacturing industry to have an understanding of the optimum grip strength gain capacity over time that would lead to better performance, accuracy and most of all prevent hand grip related injuries. For that reason, this thesis was concentrated in discovering a possible basic working model for estimating grip strength over time for a specific grip strength activity. The first step was to observe the trend characteristics of the strength gain data over …

Use Of Combinatorial Genetic Libraries To Humanize N-Linked Glycosylation In The Yeast Pichia Pastoris, Byung-Kwon Choi, Piotr Bobrowicz, Robert C. Davidson, Stephen R. Hamilton, David Kung, Huijuan Li, Robert Miele, Juergen Nett, Stefan Wildt, Tillman Gerngross

Dartmouth Scholarship

The secretory pathway of Pichia pastoris was genetically re-engineered to perform sequential glycosylation reactions that mimic early processing of N-glycans in humans and other higher mammals. After eliminating nonhuman glycosylation by deleting the initiating alpha-1,6-mannosyltransferase gene from P. pastoris, several combinatorial genetic libraries were constructed to localize active alpha-1,2-mannosidase and human beta-1,2-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase I (GnTI) in the secretory pathway. First, >32 N-terminal leader sequences of fungal type II membrane proteins were cloned to generate a leader library. Two additional libraries encoding catalytic domains of alpha-1,2-mannosidases and GnTI from mammals, insects, amphibians, worms, and fungi were cloned to generate catalytic domain libraries. …
