The Tromped, An In-Flight Exercise Device To Prevent Flight Related Deep Vein Thrombosis, Carolyn Collins, David Kennedy, Thomas Corrigan, Stephen Jerrams
Conference Papers
Medical and Engineering research studies have shown the potential risks of long haul flight travel and methods of preventing it occurring. The risk of serious health problems or even death is known to arise from lack of venous movement and increased coagulation (clotting) of the blood. These factors contribute to the development of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and this is more likely to occur in situations where people are seated for long periods during travel on land or in air. Currently long haul airlines have yet to be seen to introduce physical preventative measures against this syndrome.

The Role And Future Of Nanotechnology In Research, Industry And Education, David Kennedy
Conference Papers
Major developments in Nanotechnology have taken place across the world
over the last few years. From a humble beginning, Ireland inc. became a leader in the Microelectronics industry and now has to face the challenge of developing a strategic plan to maintain its lead position in the nano field which in most cases will supersede the micro phase. Most countries are taking a similar path of development all be it alone or in collaboration with other countries. This process is expensive and requires market drivers and experts to lead and deliver demands from the industries of the future. The approach …

Evaluation Of Prototype Cell Delivery Catheters Using Agarose Gel And Cell Culture Experiments, Sagar Panse
Theses and Dissertations
Neurodegenerative diseases and brain tumors affect millions of patients worldwide and are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The blood brain barrier constitutes a major obstacle to delivery of therapeutic agents administered systemically for treating these disorders. Intracranial drug delivery provides a novel way of bypassing the blood brain barrier and achieving high concentration of therapeutic agents in the brain while avoiding systemic side effects. However damage to tissues during insertion of catheters, release of air in the brain and consequent backtracking of dye are some disadvantages with this mode of treatment. We evaluated prototype cell delivery catheters (each with …

Design And Development Of Oligonucleotide Microarrays And Their Application In Diagnostic And Prognostic Estimation Of Human Gliomas, G. Scott Taylor
Theses and Dissertations
DNA microarrays represent an ultra-high throughput gene expression assay employed to study the transcriptomic profiles of biological tissues. These devices are increasingly being used to study many aspects of gene regulation, and there is growing interest in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries for developing such devices in efforts toward rational product/drug design. The DNA microarray also provides a unique and objective means for diagnosis and prognosis of human diseases based on patterns of gene expression. This is especially important in cancer research and the thrust toward personalized medicine. This dissertation details the design and development of oligonucleotide microarrays and the …
The Real Effect Of Warm-Cool Colors, Reynold J. Bailey, Cindy M, Grimm, Chris Davoli
The Real Effect Of Warm-Cool Colors, Reynold J. Bailey, Cindy M, Grimm, Chris Davoli
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
The phenomenon of warmer colors appearing nearer in depth to viewers than cooler colors has been studied extensively by psychologists and other vision researchers. The vast majority of these studies have asked human observers to view physically equidistant, colored stimuli and compare them for relative depth. However, in most cases, the stimuli presented were rather simple: straight colored lines, uniform color patches, point light sources, or symmetrical objects with uniform shading. Additionally, the colors used were typically highly saturated. Although such stimuli are useful in isolating and studying depth cues in certain contexts, they leave open the question of whether …
Feature Detection Using Curvature Maps And The Min-Cut/Max-Flow Graph Cut Algorithm, Timothy Gatzke, Cindy Grimm
Feature Detection Using Curvature Maps And The Min-Cut/Max-Flow Graph Cut Algorithm, Timothy Gatzke, Cindy Grimm
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
Automatic detection of features in three-dimensional objects is a critical part of shape matching tasks such as object registration and recognition. Previous approaches to local surface matching have either focused on man-made objects, where features are generally well-defined, or required some type of user interaction to select features. Manual selection of corresponding features and subjective determination of the difference between objects are time consuming processes requiring a high level of expertise. Curvature is a useful property of a surface, but curvature calculation on a discrete mesh is often noisy and not always accurate. However, the em Curvature Map, which represents …

Discovering Functional Modules By Clustering Gene Co-Expression Networks, Jianhua Ruan, Weixiong Zhang
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
Identification of groups of functionally related genes from high throughput gene expression data is an important step towards elucidating gene functions at a global scale. Most existing approaches treat gene expression data as points in a metric space, and apply conventional clustering algorithms to identify sets of genes that are close to each other in the metric space. However, they usually ignore the topology of the underlying biological networks. In this paper, we propose a network-based clustering method that is biologically more realistic. Given a gene expression data set, we apply a rank-based transformation to obtain a sparse co-expression network, …
Competent Program Evolution, Doctoral Dissertation, December 2006, Moshe Looks
Competent Program Evolution, Doctoral Dissertation, December 2006, Moshe Looks
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
Heuristic optimization methods are adaptive when they sample problem solutions based on knowledge of the search space gathered from past sampling. Recently, competent evolutionary optimization methods have been developed that adapt via probabilistic modeling of the search space. However, their effectiveness requires the existence of a compact problem decomposition in terms of prespecified solution parameters. How can we use these techniques to effectively and reliably solve program learning problems, given that program spaces will rarely have compact decompositions? One method is to manually build a problem-specific representation that is more tractable than the general space. But can this process be …
Information Analysis Of Dna Sequences, Riyazuddin Mohammed
Information Analysis Of Dna Sequences, Riyazuddin Mohammed
LSU Master's Theses
The problem of differentiating the informational content of coding (exons) and non-coding (introns) regions of a DNA sequence is one of the central problems of genomics. The introns are estimated to be nearly 95% of the DNA and since they do not seem to participate in the process of transcription of amino-acids, they have been termed “junk DNA.” Although it is believed that the non-coding regions in genomes have no role in cell growth and evolution, demonstration that these regions carry useful information would tend to falsify this belief. In this thesis, we consider entropy as a measure of information …

Modeling And Fabrication Of A Microthermocouple Array, Adam Cygan
LSU Master's Theses
Cryobiology is the study of how living cells and tissues respond to freezing and exposure to subzero temperatures. Studies in this field are aimed toward improving methods of cryosurgery as well as the storage of cells and tissues. For example, one area of research is to link the biophysical cellular dehydration and intracellular ice formation in cells during tissue freezing to cell viability and mechanical properties after thawing. There is currently a method for measuring dehydration in cells as part of a tissue, but not an adequate method for measuring intracellular ice formation in tissues. A prototype device that would …

The triblock copolymer, Pluronic P105, has been found to be an ideal ultrasonically activated drug delivery vehicle because it forms micelles with hydrophobic polypropylene oxide cores that sequester hydrophobic drugs (Fig. 1). These micelles release their contents upon the application of low frequency ultrasound [1]such that drugs can be released specifically at the ultrasonicated region (Fig. 2). Such ultrasonically controlled release has been effective against cancer cells in vitro [2] and in vivo [3]. The purpose of this research is to assess the use of these novel polymeric micelles in ultrasonically-activated Doxorubicin® (DOX) delivery to tumors. This cancer therapy involves …

Remediation Of Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Low Permeability Soils: Updating The Remediation Decision Tree (Synthesis Study), Inez Hua, Andy Hopf
Remediation Of Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Low Permeability Soils: Updating The Remediation Decision Tree (Synthesis Study), Inez Hua, Andy Hopf
JTRP Technical Reports
Because of the large number of technologies for in situ remediation, the very different types of contaminants to which these technologies are applicable, and the wide range of field conditions, it can be difficult to choose an optimal technology for a specific site. Sorting and prioritizing the various factors which contribute to the success of a particular clean-up can be daunting. Furthermore, non-technical factors, such as those in the legal, political, or financial realm, may also influence which technology is ultimately chosen. Most in situ treatment methods are effective in permeable soil. However, much of Indiana soil is low-permeability, so …

Threaded lumbar interbody spinal fusion devices (TIBFD) made from titanium have been reported to be 90% effective for single-level lumbar interbody fusion, although radiographic determination of fusion has been intensely debated in the literature. Using blinded radiographic, biomechanic, histologic, and statistical measures, we evaluated a radiolucent polyetheretherketone (PEEK)-threaded interbody fusion device packed with autograft or rhBMP-2 on an absorbable collagen sponge in 13 sheep at 6 months. Radiographic fusion, increased spinal level biomechanical stiffness, and histologic fusion were demonstrated for the PEEK cages filled with autograft or rhBMP-2 on a collagen sponge. No device degradation or wear debris was observed. …

The Influence Of Quantization Process On The Performance Of Global Entropic Thresholding Algorithms Using Electrical Capacitance Tomography Data, A. J. Mwambela
Tanzania Journal of Science
In measuring component fraction in multiphase flows using tomographic techniques, it is desirable to use a high speed tomography system capable of generating 100 tomograms per second. The electrical capacitance tomography system in this regard is considered to be the best among the available tomographic techniques. However, due to its inherent limitations the system generates distorted reconstructed tomograms necessitating the use of extra signal processing techniques such as thresholding to minimize these distortions. Whilst thresholding technique has been effective in minimizing distortions, the additional computation associated with the process limits the speed of tomogram generation desired from the system. Further, …

dTDP-L-rhamnose, an important precursor of O-antigen, was prepared on a large scale from dTMP by executing an one-pot reaction in which six enzymes are involved. Two enzymes, dTDP-4-keto-6-deoxy-D-glucose 3,5-epimerase and dTDP-4-keto-rhamnose reductase, responsible for the conversion of dTDP-4-keto-6-deoxy- D-glucose to dTDP-L-rhamnose, were isolated from their putative sequences in the genome of Mesorhizobium loti, functionally expressed in Escherichia coli, and their enzymatic activities were identified. The two enzymes were combined with an enzymatic process for dTDP-4- keto-6-deoxy-D-glucose involving TMP kinase, acetate kinase, dTDP-glucose synthase, and dTDP-glucose 4,6- dehydratase, which allowed us to achieve a preparative scale synthesis of dTDP-L-rhamnose using dTMP …

We demonstrate the potential of an alternative tool for the fabrication of nanoscale structures and devices. A nanoindenter integrated with an atomic force microscope is shown to be a powerful machine tool for cutting precise length nanowires or nanobelts and for manipulating the shortened wires. We also demonstrate its utility in cutting grooves and fabricating dents (or periodic arrays of dents) in ZnSnanobelts. This approach permits the direct mechanical machining of nanodevices that are supported on a substrate without the inherent complications of e beam or photolithography.

Desiccations cracks are formed during drying process of fine grained cohesive soils in summer and these cracks often appear on unpaved subgrades due to direct exposure to sun. These cracks allow surface runoff infiltration into subsoils and eventually weaken adjacent base and subgrade layers. The loss of support from these underlying layers results in both longitudinal and transverse cracks in paved shoulders and pavements. Composting is a successful method of recycling organic waste material into stabilized materials that could be used for erosion control and landscaping applications. Since compost is rich in fibrous material and exhibits moisture affinity characteristics, it …

Dynamic Growth Rates Of Microbial Populations In Activated Sludge Systems, Peter George Stroot, Pascal E. Saikaly, Daniel B. Oerther
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Results of mathematical modeling and whole cell 16S ribosomal RNA-targeted fluorescence in situ hybridizations challenge the widely held perception that microbial populations in "steady-state" activated sludge systems share a common net growth rate that is proportional to the inverse of the mean cell residence time. Our results are significant because they encourage bioprocess engineers to appreciate the differences in growth physiology among individual microbial populations in complex mixed microbial communities such as suspended growth activated sludge bioreactor systems.
