Consumptive Use Of Water By Major Farm Crops In The Milford District Of Utah, Glen H. Calder
Consumptive Use Of Water By Major Farm Crops In The Milford District Of Utah, Glen H. Calder
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Irrigation water supplies in the arid West have become limited, yet the area of irrigable land is still extensive. To realize the more efficient use of the available supply, or for planning new irrigation projects, studies are needed to determine how much water is consumptively used by farm crops and native vegetation.

Drainage Of The Logan-Hyde Park-Benson Area, Utah, Gordon H. Flammer
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
B.A. Etcheverry (4) in his book, Land Drainage and Flood Protection, states that inadequate drainage causes: (1) a public health menace, (2) an animal health menace, (3) lower grade plant life, (4) inadequate soil saturation, (5) lower soil temperatures, (6) shallow root penetration and, therefore, plant suffering in late summer months from effects of drought, (7) poor soil texture and workability, (8) increased surface washing and erosion of land surface, and (9) alkali and saline conditions. Other factors such as poorer roads and highways, decreased tax revenues, etc., might be added to this list. The advantages of adequate drainage …

Adaptation Of Diesel Rubber-Tired Loading Equipment To A Bedded Fluorspar Mining Problem, Robert Gill Montgomery
Adaptation Of Diesel Rubber-Tired Loading Equipment To A Bedded Fluorspar Mining Problem, Robert Gill Montgomery
Professional Degree Theses
"The fluorspar-zinc orebody at Minerva No. 1 mine near Cave in Rock, in Hardin County, Illinois, would have been classed as non-commercial before the days of flotation milling and mine mechanization. The bulk of the ore requires fine grinding for acceptable beneficiation, and the assay of the head feed runs considerably lower than grades thought to be commercial in the fluorspar district prior to 1940.
However, the reserves found by drilling before the decision was made to invest in mine development, and the construction of a two-product, 250-ton, flotation mill, with complete power plant and surface shops, exceeded 600,000 tons. …
Organization And Execution Of A Major Industrial Electrification Project, Robert F. Mccaw
Organization And Execution Of A Major Industrial Electrification Project, Robert F. Mccaw
Professional Degree Theses
"All emergencies, especially those created by war, have marshalled the industrial might of nations, among other things. World War II was no exception; in fact, it produced the greatest expansion of industrial facilities in history.
Most all plants in the country underwent some degree of expansion. In certain industries, the experienced workers of existing plants were employed as nuclei for the organization of the gigantic new plants required to produce the arms and equipment necessary to the conduct of a global war.
This thesis pertains to one phase of the design and construction of such an enterprise. This particular phase …

Photoelastic Investigation Of The Stresses In A Capless Connecting Rod, Gerald Delaine Smith
Photoelastic Investigation Of The Stresses In A Capless Connecting Rod, Gerald Delaine Smith
Masters Theses
"For a great many years the primary method used to solve engineering problems was by the use of mathematics. However, rigorous and simple mathematical solutions are only possible if the geometry of the member and its loadings are relatively simple. When irregular shapes with complex loadings are encountered, rigorous mathematical solutions for stresses induced are either impossible or very cumbersome. In such cases, the engineer must resort to other methods which are available today.
This paper attempts to show the application of the photoelastic method to such a problem. Moreover, it will show the comparative ease with which the designer …
Runoff And Soil Moisture, John William Clark Jr.
Runoff And Soil Moisture, John William Clark Jr.
Masters Theses
"Hydrology is the science treating of water from the time it hits the earth until it leaves the earth. This never ending movement of water is called the "hydrologic cycle" and is best summarized graphically. The hydrologist is primarily concerned with rainfall, runoff and evaporation. One of the basic aims of the science is to compute the surface runoff from any rain on a given area. Surface runoff is here considered as that water which reaches the channels without penetrating the ground, plus subsurface storm flow. Subsurface storm flow is slower than surface runoff but faster than ground water flow. …

The Effect Of Air-Entrainment On Concrete Containing Chert Gravel, Ali Erdogan Dinc
Masters Theses
"The problem which the writer is analyzing in this paper has been suggested to him by Prof. Carlton of the Civil Engineering Department. It consists of two parts.
- 1. Bar-Run aggregate is to be obtained from Springcreek near Rolla. This material is to be screened and recombined to obtain the best gradation for highest strength concrete obtainable.
- Durability studies are to be made on the concrete resulting from best established mix by varying the amount of air entrainment compound (Vinsol Resin) to be added to the cement"--Introduction, page 1.

Crimp Method Of Closure Of Small Pressure Vessels, Zafiri Bersu
Masters Theses
"The object of this thesis is to design a means of closing the ends of thin aluminum alloy tubing in the 1” O.D. to 2” O.D. by .035 to .065 inch thick sizes, so that the closure will withstand internal hydrostatic pressure sufficient to burst the tube along the longitudinal element.
The aim is to approach the ultimate mechanical efficiency possible, and at the same time to keep actual production in mind.…
Summarizing the aims of this investigation, it can be said that the objectives of this investigation are:
- To design ends for closed vessels.
- To form the designs.
- To …
Effect Of Viscosity On The Cetane Number Of A Diesel Fuel, Moris Bolay
Effect Of Viscosity On The Cetane Number Of A Diesel Fuel, Moris Bolay
Masters Theses
"The object of this paper is to determine or rather experimentally establish the effect of a change in viscosity of a given diesel oil in regard to the ignition quality (cetane rating) of the oil.
The author did not attempt to prove why or find out how much the cetane number was affected. But, merely, tried to experimentally verify the fact that the cetane number of the fuel used underwent a change when its viscosity was decreased by preheating it.
Since his professional interests lie in the field of automotive engineering, several thesis problems were suggested to him by Dr. …

A Compendium On Class I, Type C Mixes, Ellis G. Williams
A Compendium On Class I, Type C Mixes, Ellis G. Williams
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Recently the Class I, Type C Surface Mix has been the subject of numerous discussions resulting from present paving operations on Muldraugh Hill (U.S. 31W and U.S. 60) south of Louisville, and from performance of pavements placed heretofore on some Louisville Streets. Apparently, past difficulties have created some doubt about the suitability of Type C surfaces in heavy traffic areas for which it was intended. Type C does not represent the ultimate in stable mixtures, but it should be entirely adequate for the purpose intended.
A Survey Of Acidity In Drainage Waters And The Condition Of Highway Drainage Installations, James H. Havens
A Survey Of Acidity In Drainage Waters And The Condition Of Highway Drainage Installations, James H. Havens
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
During the summer of 1949, approximately one year after installation, serious corrosion failures were discovered in a series of galvanized metal entrance culverts on U.S. 60 south of Ashland near Princess. Because of a unique disparity in their performance at this location, the problem was referred to the Research Division for possible explanation. An impromptu investigation ensued, and the cause of the failure was attributed directly to acid drainage water flowing from extensive strip-mining operations within the immediate area. A report (1)* describing the attendant conditions was made to the Research Committee in December of that year.
As an outgrowth …

Evaluation Of Traffic Paint In 1952, A. C. Peed Jr.
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Following the program of in-service transverse stripe evaluation coupled with laboratory study of traffic paint samples submitted by various manufacturers who propose to bid on the Departments paint requirements, field stripes were placed August 19, 1952. For this test stripes were placed in the same general location as that used the two previous years (U.S. 27 south of Lexington at the junction of the concrete and bituminous pavements). Gradings contained herein were made December 27, 1952, and thus represent a somewhat premature five-month evaluation. However, the set of stripes placed in 1951 were scrutinized since they had sixteen months of …

A Limestone-Calcium Chloride Stabilized Base, William B. Drake
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
This report is mainly concerned with the calcium-chloride stabilized portion of a combination base. A 4-inch course of waterbound macadam was placed over a 1-inch insulation course overlying an existing traffic-bound stone surface. The next 4 inches of base above, the water bound material consisted of two 2-inch layers of calcium-chloride stabilized limestone of a design not used heretofore by the Department.
Bituminous concrete binder and surface courses laid over the base brought the total mat thickness to more than 11 inches. The surface width was 30 feet, and the length of the project was 1.1 miles.
Although the road …
