Structure And Properties Of Silver Borate Glasses, Edward Nashed Boulos Jan 1971

Structure And Properties Of Silver Borate Glasses, Edward Nashed Boulos

Doctoral Dissertations

"Clear glasses form in the system Ag₂O-B₂O₃ up to about 35 mol.% (65 wt.%) Ag₂O. Infrared absorption, thermal expansion and density data indicated an analogy to the Na₂O-B₂O₃ system. Pentaborate-triborate group pairs appear to be formed upon the addition of Ag₂O to B₂O₃ up to 20 mol.% Ag₂O and diborate groups from 20 to 33 mol.% Ag₂O. This interpretation is supported by the comparison of the infrared absorption spectra of quenched and crystallized glasses. One crystallization product ,Ag₂O.4B₂O₃, has been identified previously. A new compound starts to appear at 28 mol.% Ag₂O. Silver is generally present as a network modifier …

Detection Of Delay Time And Filtering Using Sequency Domain Technique, Earl F. Richards Jan 1971

Detection Of Delay Time And Filtering Using Sequency Domain Technique, Earl F. Richards

Doctoral Dissertations

"A procedure is presented by which it is possible to detect a known signal of unknown delay in a noisy medium contaminated by noise. From the results the characteristics of a sequency digital filter which would be required to remove the noise contamination is indicated. The Walsh functions are discussed and the sequency domain, which is analogous to the continuous frequency domain, is used in the spectral analysis of signals. The binary nature of the Walsh functions and their ease of generation makes processing of signals easier than the Fourier analysis approach. The applications of fast forward and inverse Walsh …

Column Research Council: Proceedings 1971, Column Research Council

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

One of the purposes of the Council is to maintain a forum where problems related to the design and behavior of columns and other compression elements in metal structures can be presented for evaluation and discussion. The Annual Technical Session provides opportunity to carry out this function. The 1971 Annual Technical Session was held on May 25 and 26 at the Pick-Rosseve1t Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Seventy-seven persons attended the Session and twenty-two papers were delivered. A panel discussion on "Fire Effects on Structural Stability" was held in the evening of May 25. In conjunction with the Technical Session, an …

Electrical Engineering Education In An Industrial Laboratory, J. Derald Morgan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper describes a unique electrical engineering laboratory course. This laboratory is an example of industry-uni-versity cooperation in engineering education. The organization and operation of the course is outlined and explained. The educational benefits derived from such cooperation between industry and the university are briefly detailed. These benefits are extended to the students, the university, the faculty, and the participating industry. This paper provides the framework and challenge to industry from which other laboratory experiences can be conceived and developed. Deriving Dc Machine Torque By The Principle Of Virtual Work, George Mcpherson Jan 1971

Deriving Dc Machine Torque By The Principle Of Virtual Work, George Mcpherson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The purpose of this paper is to fill a gap which exists in the "textbook" theory of dc machines. The paper shows that the usual expression for dc machine torque can be obtained from the direct application of the principle of virtual work to the machine, making the traditional assumptions. The method provides additional benefits in that it demonstrates the reluctance torque which results from the saliency of the field structure and shows that compensating windings have no effect on the torque under the assumed linear conditions. Industry Participation In Electrical Engineering Education-Extra High Voltage Laboratory, J. Derald Morgan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A unique electrical engineering laboratory course is described. This laboratory is an example of how industry can cooperate with universities in engineering education. The organization and operation of the course as well as the course material is outlined and explained, including the ways in which the industry participates in the operation of the laboratory. The educational benefits derived from such a cooperation between industry and the university are briefly detailed. These benefits are extended to the student, the University, the faculty, and the participating industry. This article provides the framework on which other laboratory experiences could be conceived and developed …

A Comprehensive Investigation Of The Behavior Of Saturated Sands Subjected To Cyclic Triaxial Loadings., James Francis Kanipe Dec 1970

A Comprehensive Investigation Of The Behavior Of Saturated Sands Subjected To Cyclic Triaxial Loadings., James Francis Kanipe

Civil Engineering ETDs

Considerable interest in earthquake engineering has developed during the past decade. Due to the potential hazards involved in foundation failures of nuclear power plants, and because there is an increase in the demand for earth dams throughout the world together with a decrease in desirable sites, it has become imperative that reliable techniques be developed to predict the response of soils to earthquake induced forces. As an integral part of such an endeavor, this research program was directed toward the identification of the various factors which significantly influence the development of pore pressure in saturated sands subjected to cyclic stress …

Relationship Between Soil Support Value And Kentucky Cbr, Tommy C. Hopkins Dec 1970

Relationship Between Soil Support Value And Kentucky Cbr, Tommy C. Hopkins

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Three slightly different correlations between Kentucky CBR's and the AASHO Road Test soil support values were developed. The first relationship was made by assuming a logarithmic scale between Kentucky CBR's of 5.2 and 100, which corresponded to values on the soil support scale of 3 and 10, respectively. The Kentucky CBR of 5.2 was determined by performing tests on the AASHO road subgrade soils. For practical purposes, the AASHO Road Test crushed stone base material was assumed to be a "100 percent CBR material" (this assumption was based on CBR data previously reported by Shook and Fang). The second correlation …

Statistical Quality Control Of Highway Construction And Materials, J. B. Venable Dec 1970

Statistical Quality Control Of Highway Construction And Materials, J. B. Venable

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objective of this report is to review existing local practices used in establishing and enforcing highway specifications and construction processes and to compare these practices. With procedures based on statistical quality control concepts. In order that statistical quality control concepts may be properly used where applicable, the first part of this report considers the general theory underlying the use of statistical control methods and the development of different types. Of acceptance plans which may be used in the highway construction industry. The second portion of the report is concerned with analyzing and comparing Kentucky's current specification requirements with typical …

Evaluation Of Cored Specimens From Timber Caisson Beneath Pier No. 2 Of The Us 25 Bridge Over The Ohio River Between Covington And Cincinnati, James H. Havens, Assaf S. Rahal Dec 1970

Evaluation Of Cored Specimens From Timber Caisson Beneath Pier No. 2 Of The Us 25 Bridge Over The Ohio River Between Covington And Cincinnati, James H. Havens, Assaf S. Rahal

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Pier No. 2 of the former C&O Bridge at Covington is off-shore from the Kentucky side of the Ohio River. It was built in 1887. In 1927, this pier was extended downstream to support a new railroad bridge. The other three piers remained independent. The original structure was then converted to highway use and was purchased by the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1937. In 1968, an engineering analysis of the superstructure indicated critical deficiencies in terms of "safety factors", and the bridge was closed to all traffic. Subsequently, various plans for reconstruction came under consideration. Of greatest significance here is …
