Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) retaining walls are vital components of transportation infrastructure, providing structural support for embankments and bridge approaches. As many walls approach or exceed their design life, concerns regarding long-term stability, settlement, and displacement have increased. Traditional visual inspection remains the most common assessment method; however, it is subjective and often unable to detect subtle geometric changes that may precede structural distress or failure. Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) has become an economically valuable crop with a wide range of benefits. To promote more sustainable agricultural systems, the use of recycled substrates has increasingly replaced traditional fertilizers. However, substrates such as dry chicken manure, vermicompost, and wastewater sludge (WWS) combined with biochar often contain heavy metal contaminants, which may pose health risks through exposure to hemp. This research project focuses on understanding how various soil properties affect the corrosion of buried pipelines that are protected by cathodic protection (CP) systems. Specifically, the study seeks to evaluate key soil characteristics, including resistivity, moisture content, and pH levels to determine their influence on the efficiency of CP systems in mitigating corrosion. Through controlled laboratory experiments, carbon steel specimens were exposed to a range of simulated soil conditions to mimic real-world environments. Cathodic protection (CP) is a widely used technique to mitigate corrosion in buried steel pipelines. This study uses COMSOL Multiphysics to model and analyze the performance of both sacrificial anode and impressed current systems in a simulated 3D environment. The model solves for pipeline potential, current density, and corrosion rate within a surrounding soil domain to assess protection coverage across the pipeline. Simulations were conducted to evaluate the influence of electrode and electrolyte properties on CP effectiveness. State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) are responsible for maintaining approximately 623,000 bridges across the United States. Effective bridge management requires a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing structural deterioration. Numerous studies have explored the effects of average daily traffic (ADT) and deck area (DA) on bridge deck deterioration. Given the interdependence between bridge decks and superstructures, it is plausible that ADT and DA significantly influence superstructure condition ratings and deterioration trends. Majority of over 617,000 bridges across the United States are significantly impacted by environmental factors, aging materials, and heavy traffic loads. According to the 2021 Infrastructure Report, nearly 231,000 bridges require repair or preservation work, with 46,154 (7.5%) being classified as structurally deficient, thereby posing risks for mor than 178 million daily trips across these bridges. Despite recent improvements, 42% of U.S. bridges are at least 50 years old, underscoring an urgent need for increased investment to meet repair demands. This thesis builds upon a prior study that analyzed the safety effects of Edge Lane Roads (ELRs) within the U.S. context, addressing gaps related to collision, traffic volume, and speed data. An ELR is a roadway configuration that accommodates two-way automobile traffic within a single center lane while providing edge lanes for vulnerable road users (VRUs), i.e., bicyclists or pedestrians. Discarded objects like munitions in marine environments pose public safety risks. The behavior of various density objects deployed at four cross-shore positions in the surf zone of a large-scale 120 m x 5 m x 5 m wave flume were observed under different forcing conditions. Net migration was predominantly directed offshore, with approximately 70 % offshore migration observed near the outer surf zone. Density, shape, and initial orientation were identified as important to object behavior, with density acting as the dominant driver in 67 % of the object pairing scenarios. According to the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA, 2024), approximately 36% of all U.S. bridges require major repair or replacement, with an estimated cost of $400 billion. Recent U.S. security statistics report a sharp rise in unauthorized UAV activities, with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) receiving over 100 monthly reports of illegal drone operations near airports. A method for calculating the characteristic frequency is proposed, based on automatic interpolation of the frequency dependence of the reactance and subsequent calculation of the characteristic frequency as one of the roots of the interpolation function. The developed algorithm allows you to calculate the characteristic frequency from only 4 points of the frequency dependence of the reactance. In this case, the error in calculating the resonant frequency parameter does not exceed ~2 Hz.

This study presents an eco-friendly flame-retardant solution for cellulosic fabrics using green coconut shell (GCS) extract and phytic acid (PA). Cellulosic materials are highly flammable and release harmful gases during combustion. Conventional flame retardants may pose environmental and health risks while impacting the fabric quality. GCS extract is a rich source of tannins, phosphorus, silicates, metallic salts, and oxides and is explored as a novel flame retardant (FR) for cotton fabrics. Cotton samples were pretreated with PA and then with varying concentrations of GCS extract using a padding technique.
