A feature is a single measurable criterion to an observation of a process. While knowledge discovery techniques successfully contribute in many fields, however, the extensive required data processing could hinder the performance of these techniques. One of the main issues in processing data is the dimensionality of the data. Therefore, focusing on reducing the data dimensionality through eliminating the insignificant attributes could be considered one of the successful steps for raising the applied techniques’ performance. On the other hand, focusing on the applied field, ovarian cancer patients continuously suffer from the extensive analysis requirements for detecting the disease as well …

Computer Simulation For Continuous Centrifugation Of High-Density Cell Cultures, Hironori Tomizawa Oct 2021

Computer Simulation For Continuous Centrifugation Of High-Density Cell Cultures, Hironori Tomizawa

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Perfusion bioreactors are used for cell production for cell therapies. The system uses cell separation devices such as centrifuge to facilitate cell growth by separating cells and spent media and allows constant media replacement. However, current cell separation technologies can increase shear stress, are generally not continuous processes, and are not as efficient as desired. These limit the amount of media replaced per unit time. Therefore, there is a need for a new system or a method that operates continuously to minimize cell damage, yield high cell concentration, and exchange media effectively. A set of research questions was formulated: (1) …

Posterior Segment Ophthalmic Drug Delivery: Role Of Muco-Adhesion With A Special Focus On Chitosan., Ayah Mohammad Burhan, Butsabarat Klahan, Wayne Cummins, Vanessa Andrés-Guerrero, Mark Byrne, Niall J O'Reilly, Anuj Chauhan, Laurence Fitzhenry, Helen Hughes

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Posterior segment eye diseases (PSEDs) including age macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) are amongst the major causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. Due to the numerous barriers encountered, highly invasive intravitreal (IVT) injections represent the primary route to deliver drugs to the posterior eye tissues. Thus, the potential of a more patient friendly topical route has been widely investigated. Mucoadhesive formulations can decrease precorneal clearance while prolonging precorneal residence. Thus, they are expected to enhance the chances of adherence to corneal and conjunctival surfaces and as such, enable increased delivery to the posterior eye segment. Among the mucoadhesive polymers …

Assessing The Role Of The Pelvic Canal In Supporting The Gut In Humans, Jeanelle Uy, Natalie Laudicina Oct 2021

Assessing The Role Of The Pelvic Canal In Supporting The Gut In Humans, Jeanelle Uy, Natalie Laudicina

Peer Reviewed Articles

The human pelvic canal (true pelvis) functions to support the abdominopelvic organs and serves as a passageway for reproduction (females). Previous research suggests that these two functions work against each other with the expectation that the supportive role results in a narrower pelvic midplane, while fetal passage necessitates a larger opening. In this research, we examine how gut size relates to the size and shape of the true pelvis, which may have implications on how gut size can influence pelvic floor integrity. Pelves and in vivo gut volumes were measured from CT scans of 92 adults (48 female, 44 male). …
