This guide was prepared to give instructions for preparing specialized maps containing information showing impediments to cross-country movement. Appendix I, an example of a CCM map, was created by adding an overlay on a sheet from the US Army Map …

The Volumetric Analysis Of Nitrocompounds Using Chromous Chloride, Charles Caslin Jamison May 1959

The Volumetric Analysis Of Nitrocompounds Using Chromous Chloride, Charles Caslin Jamison

Theses

Chromous chloride has been shown to be more efficient than titanous chloride in the reduction of refractory nitro and nitramine groups in both aromatic and aliphatic compounds.

It was found that concentrated hydrochloric acid increases the efficiency of chromous chloride to a point where it would reduce the most difficult to deduce nitro-campounds.

The compounds studied were p-Nitromethylaniline, 2,4-Dinitrotoluene, 2,4-Dinitroaniline, 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene, Nitroguanidine, I,9-Di4cetoxy-2,4,6,8-penta-methylenetetranitramine, Sym-Cyclotrimethylenetrinitrimine, and Sym-Cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine.

The Effects Of Ultrasonically-Induced Cavitation Upon Dissolved Oxygen, Free Carbon Dioxide, And Bicarbonate Ion Concentration In Water, Charles Alvin Wentz Jr. Jan 1959

The Effects Of Ultrasonically-Induced Cavitation Upon Dissolved Oxygen, Free Carbon Dioxide, And Bicarbonate Ion Concentration In Water, Charles Alvin Wentz Jr.

Masters Theses

"Cavitation may be encountered in many scientific fields. Mechanical and civil engineers are concerned with the prevention of cavitation erosion in the design of turbines, propellers, underwater missiles, and similar structures. Biologists and physiologists are seeking more knowledge concerning the tensile strength of liquids, such as, tree sap and the formation of gas bubbles in the blood stream. Finally, the physicist and acoustical engineer must cope with the cavitation problem when working with underwater transducers, cavitation noise, and the propagation of acoustical signals through media in which cavitation is occurring.

There are many forces which hold a liquid together and …

A Preliminary Investigation Of Natural Gas Combustion As Applied To Thermal Recovery Of Petroleum, Roger J. Schoeppel

Masters Theses

"Present application of the subsurface combustion processes in the thermal recovery of petroleum afford favorable and opportune methods of providing greater recoveries from petroleum reservoirs. This study attempts to elucidate some of the parameters controlling the complex hydrocarbon oxidation for one such process. The experimental phase consisted of investigating the combustion behavior of eight nonexplosive and one explosive natural gas-air mixtures at low and intermediate pressures. The hydrocarbon was allowed to oxidize by self-ignition under controlled conditions within environments precluding a visible flame type reaction. Progress of the reaction was followed by measuring effluent oxygen content.

Experimental evidence indicate the …

Chemical Kinetics Of The Zirconium-Hydrofluoride Reaction, Wayne G. Custead Jan 1959

Chemical Kinetics Of The Zirconium-Hydrofluoride Reaction, Wayne G. Custead

Masters Theses

"It has been only in recent years that hafnium-free zirconium has been made available for commercial use. When economical methods were developed in 1950 to remove hafnium from zirconium, a metal was produced which not only exhibited good corrosion resistance and desirable physical properties, but which also had a very low absorption cross section for thermal neutrons. These factors have led to its most important application to date, that of a structural material for nuclear reactors.

The outstanding non-nuclear property of zirconium is its corrosion resistance to most mineral acids. Hafnium-free zirconium exhibits outstanding resistance to all mineral acids with …

Correlation Of Maximum Air Velocity With Liquid Entrainment Loading For Wire Mesh Mist Eliminators, Edward W. Poppele

Theses

Two styles of Initted 'wire mesh entrainment separators,or demisters were investigated to determine maximun useful air flow rates over a wide range of liquid entrainmant loadings. The demisters studiod were six-inch thickniess and constructed of 0.011 inch diameter stainless steel wire.

The expression widely used to determine allowable design velocity for gas through demisters is:

V=K/((d1, dv)/ dv) (1)

where
V = Maximum Degree gas velocity, feet per second,
K = is a constant for the system,
d= density of entrained liquid phase, pounds per cubic foot,
dv = density of gaseous phase, pounds per cubic foot.

In the kinetic study, the ferric ion-hydrogen ion exchange using Dowex 50 X-8 resin was studied in an agitated vessel. A two-bladed marine type propellor was used and the agitator speed was varied from 400 to 800 …

Ferro And Ferricyanides In Industrial Waste Water, Frederick Joseph Neff May 1958

Ferro And Ferricyanides In Industrial Waste Water, Frederick Joseph Neff

Theses

The role of the Ferro and ferricyanides in present day waste treatment practice is reviewed. Possible conventional methods for the disposal of the compounds appear inadequate. It is shown experimentally that the cyanide content of Ferrocyanide may be oxidized by hypochlorite in alkaline solution when exposed to ultra-violet light and that no oxidation of the cyanide occurs when reacted with hypochlorite in diffuse laboratory light.

Operational Characteristics Of A Small Sewage Oxidation Lagoon, Karlheinz C. Muhlbauer Jan 1958

Operational Characteristics Of A Small Sewage Oxidation Lagoon, Karlheinz C. Muhlbauer

Masters Theses

"With the rapidly increasing population in the United States the adequate disposal of sewage has become one of the major technical problems which the sanitary engineer has to solve. In most areas it is no longer acceptable practice to discharge domestic sewage or industrial waste products directly into streams or lakes because of the resulting pollution of the water, which may later be used for drinking or recreational purposes. Many larger cities have, therefore, adopted some method of sewage treatment which renders such wastes safe and unobjectionable before they are discharged into a lake or stream. Most of these methods …

Theses

In this investigation the rates of trivalent-univalent cation exchange in a stirred batch reactor for the chromic ion-Dovex 50 system have been measured. The progress of the reaction has been followed continuously by measuring the change in hydrogen ion concentration of the bulk solution as a function of time with a Beckman pH Meter having external electrodes immersed in the reaction mixture.

This work has been undertaken to determine the rate-controlling mechanism of the reaction, and the influence of agitator speed, particle size, and solution concentration on the rate of exchange. Agitator speed. studied, as limited by the equipment, are …

Measurement Of The Specific Surface Of Perlite, Richard Gordon Lamborn, Carl Henry Vogel Jun 1957

Measurement Of The Specific Surface Of Perlite, Richard Gordon Lamborn, Carl Henry Vogel

Theses

A low temperature gas adsorption apparatus was designed for the purpose of measuring the total surface area of solids using the well known B.E.T. method.

The apparatus was designed so that several different gases could be used as adsorbates without evacuating the gas reservoirs each time a different adsorbate was to be used. This was accomplished by providing three gas reservoirs of sufficient capacity to allow several determinations to be made at moderate initial reservoir pressures of from two to three pounds per square inch. A separate bulb and manometer system was supplied for determining the saturation pressures of adsorbates …

An Investigation Of The Hofman Reaction As A Possible Method Of Synthesizing 3,4-Diamino Pyridine, Harry William Zbinden Jun 1957

An Investigation Of The Hofman Reaction As A Possible Method Of Synthesizing 3,4-Diamino Pyridine, Harry William Zbinden

Theses

This study presents an attempt to evaluate the Hofman degradation as a method of synthesizing 3,4-diamino-pyridine from isoquinolinic acid. Since the pyridine ring is known to he stable under the reaction conditions, and analogous aromatic diamides have been prepared by previous investigators, the major problem studied is the effect of hypohalites on ortho-oriented aromatic diamides.

Three methods of approaching the problem were unsuccessful in producing the desired diamine, but the last method, stepwise degradation of each group separately, may be workable with some changes.

The most significant result was the observation of an unexpected side reaction when the diamide was …

An Investigation Into Salt-Bath Heat Treatment For Titanium, Robert Fred Bechtold May 1957

An Investigation Into Salt-Bath Heat Treatment For Titanium, Robert Fred Bechtold

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Titanium, although possessing excellent corrosion resistance in some media, is severely attacked by molten inorganic salts such as those employed in heat-treating baths. Since titanium undergoes allotropic changes, many of its alloys are amendable to heat treatment. The purpose of this study was to discover a salt (or other suitable medium) in which titanium alloys can be successfully heat treated without fear of corrosion.
