A New Method Of Making Stainless Steel Powder By Electrochemical Disintegration, Mohammed Maher Saad
A New Method Of Making Stainless Steel Powder By Electrochemical Disintegration, Mohammed Maher Saad
Masters Theses
"This paper describes a new method of making austenitic stainless steel (18/8) powder by electrochemical disintegration. The method used an external direct current applied to a heat-treated stainless steel anode, and a platinum cathode in an electrolyte of an aqueous solution of 20% HNO3 and 1% H2SO4 by weight respectively.
Special attention has been paid to the size distribution of sieve and sub-sieve sizes, and the following ranges were found: approximately one-half lies between the limits of 200 and 325 mesh, and one third is finer than 325 mesh, with the remainder about +200 mesh, average …

Separation Of Radioactive Fission Products By Electrodialysis Using Aminopolycarboxylic Acids., Harry C. Hershey
Masters Theses
"The development of nuclear fission reactors to convert nuclear energy into electrical energy for use in industry, public utilities, military applications, and space exploration has resulted in ever increasing quantities of radioactive waste solutions. Significant reductions in nuclear fuel costs will be obtained when economical processes have been developed for recovery and purification of valuable fission products which are contained in radioactive waste solutions and are in demand for many research applications.
The United States Atomic Energy Commission has supported exhaustive studies to recover fission products by processes involving the more common unit operations such as extraction, distillation, crystallization, and …
Analysis Of Problems In The Performance Of A Natural Gas Storage Reservoir., Gerald Eugene Henderson
Analysis Of Problems In The Performance Of A Natural Gas Storage Reservoir., Gerald Eugene Henderson
Masters Theses
"A digital computer technique is presented for predicting two parameters of underground natural gas storage reservoir performance: (1) the prediction of reservoir pressures and volumes, and (2) the prediction of optimum flow rate and pressure drawdown for a single well in accordance with the theory of water coning.
The outlined procedure for predicting gas storage reservoir pressures and volumes was not effective for the field studies, although certain conclusions have been drawn which should be beneficial in further studies.
The procedure for predicting optimum gas flow rate and pressure drawdown from a well without production of bottom water involved first …

Electromagnetic Radiation In Magneto-Ionic Media For Vlf And Vhf Spectra, Kenneth R. Cook
Electromagnetic Radiation In Magneto-Ionic Media For Vlf And Vhf Spectra, Kenneth R. Cook
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The interaction of electromagnetic fields and magneto-ionic media has received considerable attention in the last few years. In rather general terms, the investigation of these phenomena can be categorized into two basic classes. In one class of investigation the primary interest is the dynamic nature of the plasma when subjected to specialized forms of electromagnetic fields. This branch of science has various nomenclatures such as hydromagnetics, magnetohydrodynamics, plasma physics and numerous others implying the use of high density ionized gases interacting with electromagnetic fields. Controlled fusion processes for transforming energy states is an example of this branch of electromagnetics and …

Program Evaluation And Review Technique, Anthony Immaculate Agresta
Theses
The problem of planning, controling and evaluating complex projects both engineering and non-engineering has existed as long as the projects themselves. In the past the approach of management to this problem has been one which was based heavily on the use of historical information. There have been very few attempts to predict and control the occurrence of the objective event of these projects.
This thesis deals with a review of this problem and a new approach to the planning, control, and evaluation of these complex projects. This new approach is the Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) which was developed …
Preparation Of Aryl Sulfones By Sulfonation In The Presence Of Phosphrous Oxychloride, Donald Frederick Kruse
Preparation Of Aryl Sulfones By Sulfonation In The Presence Of Phosphrous Oxychloride, Donald Frederick Kruse
Theses
The use of phosphorus oxychloride as a dehydrating agent in the sulfonation of aromatic compounds has been investigated, particularly with respect to the formation of aryl sulfones. The sulfonation of several aromatic compounds using reagent grade sulfuric acid and phosphorus oxychloride has produced sulfone yields which exceed yields reported in the literature and obtained by more tedious methods. The presence of alkyl side groups on the benzene ring generally favors high yields of sulfone; whereas the presence of halogens generally reduces the yield. Sulfone formation is shown to be dependent upon the reactant ratios and upon the reaction time and …

Stress-Corrosion Cracking Of Brass, Paul A. Fossey
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
the mechanism of stress-corrosion cracking of brass has been sought for many years. Investigators have proposed many mechanisms, but each of these mechanisms has always had several drawbacks. This paper presents an account of experimental work done in the laboratory on this subject and compares it to the work of previous investigations. It evaluates the mechanisms presented by investigators and shows the failures of these mechanisms. A theory of Nitrogen Embrittlement is presented and an evaluation of this theory with experimental work follows.

Dipole Approximation Of The Solution For An Electrode Configuration In Two-Layer Resistivity Problem, Siew Hung Chan
Dipole Approximation Of The Solution For An Electrode Configuration In Two-Layer Resistivity Problem, Siew Hung Chan
Masters Theses
"An electrode configuration which consists of a pair of current electrodes, spaced at a unit apart, being kept at a great distance r from a pair of potential electrodes also spaced at a unit apart, has been investigated. Two theoretical apparent resistivity formulae were derived by applying Kelvin's theory of images to the problem of two-layer case. One formula is obtained by the exact method of solution, the other being obtained by considering the pair of current electrodes as a single dipole. Results of numerical calculations show that the greater the spacing r in comparison to the spacing a, …
The Experimental Determination And Prediction Of Ternary-Liquid Equilibria Data, Risdon William Hankinson
The Experimental Determination And Prediction Of Ternary-Liquid Equilibria Data, Risdon William Hankinson
Masters Theses
"Although the field of liquid extraction is of increasing importance in today's chemical industry, the ternary-liquid data so necessary to the design and study of extraction operations are available in the literature only to a limited extent. During the twentieth century, approximately 120 ternary-liquid systems have been studied. However, limiting solubility data have been reported for approximately one-third of these systems, and about 30 per cent of the equilibria data reported for the remainder of these systems are incomplete or inaccurate.
Within limits, liquid equilibria data may be calculated for a ternary system from the properties of its constituents which …
Fractionation Of Fission Elements By Electrodialysis, George Joseph Bub
Fractionation Of Fission Elements By Electrodialysis, George Joseph Bub
Masters Theses
"The development of nuclear power has presented countless problems to the scientists and engineers of today. A problem of extreme importance is the disposal of radioactive wastes. Another is the recovery of some of the useful radioisotopes from fission product waste solutions. This investigation is concerned with the recovery of some of the fission elements for use in radiochemical and medical research and in industry.
At present little effort is made to recover useful fission elements. The fission product waste solutions are treated to reduce the volume and are stored until the radiological hazard is reduced and are then disposed …
Porous Cooling Of A Pile, Tarsem Singh Purewal
Porous Cooling Of A Pile, Tarsem Singh Purewal
Masters Theses
"In this investigation the problem of a limiting case of steady state one dimensional solid-fluid Newtonian heat transfer is examined in which an incompressible non-heat generating coolant fluid is flowing through a heat generating porous plate.
The effect of grain size on the Newtonian heat transfer in the porous plate with various kinds of internal heat generations is determined analytically. The temperature difference between the solid and the coolant fluid through the porous plate is determined. All the previous studies assume that in the porous plate, coolant fluid temperature and solid temperatures are approximately equal. This analysis eliminates this simplifying …

Transpiration Cooling Of A Porous Plate, Stephan A. Sayegh
Transpiration Cooling Of A Porous Plate, Stephan A. Sayegh
Masters Theses
"Transpiration cooling has long been known as an effective way of removing heat from porous materials. This thesis is a new approach to one of the problems of transpiration cooling in the steady state.
The specific problem considered here is that of a uniform porous plate through which a liquid is forced. This liquid vaporizes at a short distance from the surface through which it is forced and leaves the porous plate at the other surface which is exposed to hot gases. It also protects the hot surface by forming an insulating layer between that surface and the hot gases. …

A Study Of The Permeability And Separation Of Carbon Dioxide And Hydrogen By Gaseous Diffusion Employing Barriers Of Polystyrene, Carl J. Wallace
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this investigation was to study the permeability and separation of carbon dioxide and hydrogen by gaseous diffusion employing barriers of polystyrene. The offset of temperature and barrier thickness on the permeability and separation of carbon dioxide and hydrogen wore Investigated for barriers of one, three, and five-mil thicknesses and for temperatures of 26, 35, 45, and 50 degrees centigrade.
With an increase in barrier thickness of one to five- mils, the permeability of carbon dioxide decreased to one-fourth of its value at the one-mil thickness. The hydrogen permeability decreased to approximately two- thirds of its value at …
A Model Study Of The Induction Log Applied To The Detection Of Asymmetrically Located Orebodies, Robert Walter Piekarz
A Model Study Of The Induction Log Applied To The Detection Of Asymmetrically Located Orebodies, Robert Walter Piekarz
Masters Theses
"This research project was undertaken to determine the possibility of using an induction log of the type applied in petroleum exploration, for the detection of conductive ore- bodies asymmetrically located with respect to a borehole. Since a mathematical analysis would be extremely complex, a model study was conducted, using graphite bodies of various shapes to simulate different modes of mineral occurence.
The investigation showed that these bodies were readily detectable, and were capable of yielding anomalous curves characteristic of their geometry. The values of apparent conductivity decreased rapidly with lateral displacement, from the logging tool, as expected, due to the …

Permeability Of Poly (Ethylene Terephthalate), James G. Harvey
Permeability Of Poly (Ethylene Terephthalate), James G. Harvey
Masters Theses
"Corrosion is a phenomenon which has been the subject of extensive research, in order to find a way to control or completely stop it. Two general methods, either placing the material which corrodes in an anti-corrosive atmosphere or protecting the material which corrodes from the corrosive atmosphere, are the chief means of preventing corrosion today.
The second method is probably most widely used presently. One of the most important methods of protection is by means of organic protective coatings, or paints, but at best these only retard corrosion, due to the fact that corrosive media e.g. water vapor, ions etc. …

Transpiration Cooling Of A Heat Generating Porous Plate, M. K. A. Hameed
Masters Theses
"This investigation is a continuation of a thesis by T. S. Purewal. Several of the simplifying assumptions made by the above author are either ignored or the justifiability of such assumptions is probed into in order to obtain a more rigorous solution. Effects of the assorted grain size, non-Newtonian cooling, direction of coolant flow, thickness of the porous heat generating plate, specific heat of the coolant, and compressibility of the coolant are investigated in this thesis. Variation of maximum temperature of both coolant and the solid material for different types of heat source distribution are also studied.

Fm 55-8, Transportation Intelligence, 1961, Robert Bolin , Depositor
United States Department of Defense Military Intelligence
In 1961, American military intelligence was decentralized. The Army was responsible for all intelligence concerning foreign armed forces. Within the Army, the technical services – Transportation Corps, Signal Corps, Ordnance Corps, etc. – were responsible for intelligence concerning analogous organization in foreign organizations. The Transportation Corps was responsible for intelligence concerning foreign transportation equipment and services. Since there was no centralized American military intelligence organization, the Transportation Corps was tasked with supplying intelligence concerning foreign road and rail networks and waterways as well as ports and landing beaches and airfields.
This manual defines transportation intelligence and prescribes Army doctrine concerning …

Propagation Between Conducting And Nonconducting Media, Richard H. Williams
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
This paper contains a study of the electromagnetic fields caused by electric dipoles located within a highly conductive medium such as the sea. The theoretical treatment of this problem was begun in 1951 with Moore's thesis. "The Theory of Radio Communication between Submerged Submarines." Some subsequent major theoretical treatments of this problem have been published by Wait and Campbell, Lien, Banos and Wesley, and Anderson. All of the above work stems from Sommerfeld's classic paper published in 1909 where he considers the fields in the air caused by a vertical electric antenna located on the interface between the air and …
