Numerical Simulation Of Air-Conditioning Heat Recovery Water Heating Systems, Amir H. Gorji Jan 1986

Numerical Simulation Of Air-Conditioning Heat Recovery Water Heating Systems, Amir H. Gorji

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A computer simulation program called TRNSYS (Transient System Simulation) was used to model two air-conditioning waste heat recovery water heating configurations. The first model is a heat recovery unit (HRU) that utilizes an 80-gallon storage tank in conjunction with a conventional home air-conditioning system. The second model is similar to the first, except that there is an additional 80-gallon preheat storage tank. An attempt was made to compare simulation results with experimental field data. However, due to problems encountered during the field tests, such as equipment and/or instrumentation failure, there were not enough experimental data to make a rigorous comparison. …

A Peripheral Subsystem Optimized For Computer Image Generation Applications, John J. Bloomer Jan 1986

A Peripheral Subsystem Optimized For Computer Image Generation Applications, John J. Bloomer

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Requirements for ever increasing realism in real time computer image generation for military mission and commercial training, have generated the need for a higher performance, more cost effective front-end processor. Current computer image generators front-end general purpose computers are reaching their performance limits in current architectures.

The tasks of this processor include: realtime computations, magnetic disk control, data transfer and direct memory access to and from the balance of the image generator. A new front-end processor system is under development. This multiple-bus, multiprocessor architecture in and of itself does not address disk and external data transfer. A peripheral subsystem is …

Synchronized On-Line Microprocessor Control Of Optical Disk Recorders And Players Using Realtime Interface Hardware/Software, William C. Reese Jan 1986

Synchronized On-Line Microprocessor Control Of Optical Disk Recorders And Players Using Realtime Interface Hardware/Software, William C. Reese

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this research report is to describe clearly the development of an operational software program which utilizes a realtime interface hardware unit to synchronously control an optical disc player and optical disc recorder via an external microprocessor. The previous UCF Engineering College’s optical disc hardware configuration consisted of a Panasonic optical disc player and recorder, color monitor, video camera, and PRO-350 to control only one device (player or recorder) at a time as the microprocessor has only one serial input/output (I/O) port. The Digital Equipment Corporation’s realtime interface device provides two serial I/O ports and therefore allows the …

Corrosion Ability And The Chemistry Of Mercuric Chloride And Related Compounds, Martin R. Kruger Jan 1986

Corrosion Ability And The Chemistry Of Mercuric Chloride And Related Compounds, Martin R. Kruger

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This research project found that a solution of methanol and methylene chloride saturated with mercuric chloride was very effective at diffusing through a paint film and destroying an aluminum barrier below. The project also found evidence that mercuric chloride chemically reacts with dimethylformamide and dimethysulfoxide. The project concluded that corrosion of metals in an organic solvent media is best studied by thermal analysis.

Companding Flash Analog-To-Digital Converters, Michael P. Brig Jan 1986

Companding Flash Analog-To-Digital Converters, Michael P. Brig

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report will demonstrate how a companding flash analog-to-digital converter can be used to satisfy both the dynamic range and resolution requirements of an infrared imaging system. In the past, infrared imaging systems had to rely on analog electronics to process a thermal image. This was costly and, in many ways, inefficient but the only way to perform the function. Digital processing was impractical because ADC conversion speeds were slow with respect to video frequencies. Furthermore, it is impossible to gain the necessary dynamic range using linear conversion techniques without large digital wordlengths. Therefore, the principles of companding flash analog-to-digital …

An Investigation Of The Low Voltage Failure Mechanism In Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors, Christopher John Brannon Jan 1986

An Investigation Of The Low Voltage Failure Mechanism In Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors, Christopher John Brannon

Masters Theses

"Enhanced leakage current was induced into multilayer ceramic capacitors by the introduction of micro-cracks. These cracks extended from the surface through the electrode layers and were formed by means of thermal shock. The capacitors were then exposed to a low voltage bias and a humid atmosphere. Results indicated that a simple electrolytic solution mechanism may be responsible for the increased conduction, and that the proposed dendritic growth mechanisms may be more complex than necessary"--Abstract, p. ii

Optimizing The Rapid Evolution Of Target Groundwater Potentiometric Surfaces, Richard C. Peralta, Krzysztof G. Kowalski Jan 1986

Optimizing The Rapid Evolution Of Target Groundwater Potentiometric Surfaces, Richard C. Peralta, Krzysztof G. Kowalski

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

THE long-term availability of adequate groundwater for sustainable irrigated agricultural production can be assured by causing the evolution and maintenance of an appropriate potentiometric (piezometric) surface in utilized aquifers. By providing adequate saturated thickness and hydraulic gradients and heads. such a surface affords some protection from the effects of drought. economic: hardship, and environmental or legal complications. Procedures for determining desirable or optimal regional steady-state groundwater potentiometric surfaces have been reported by several researchers. An existing polcmiometric surface can be forced to evolve into a desirable 'target' surface if it is subjected through time to the proper combination of recharges …

Water Quality Management Studies For Water Resources Development In The Bear River Basin, Darwin L. Sorensen, Craig Caupp, William J. Grenney, Steve Eberl, Jay J. Messer, Phillip Ludvigsen, Charles W. Ariss

Reports

Summary: The quality of water that develops in the proposed reservoirs of the Upper Bear River Storage Project will determine the possible uses of the water. Previous studies of water quality in the Bear River and its tributaries have reported water quality problems relating to nitrate ion, sanitary indicator bacteria, suspended solids, and phosphorus concentrations. Most point sources of water pollution inthe basin have been eliminated or improved in quality, but nonpoint sources of pollution continue to degrade the quality of the Bear River. Concentrations of phosphours have been sufficiently high to encourage dense algal growth and create eutrophic conditions …

Optimal Modification Of Regional Potentiometric Surface Design For Groundwater Contaminant Containment, Bithin Datta, Richard C. Peralta Jan 1986

Optimal Modification Of Regional Potentiometric Surface Design For Groundwater Contaminant Containment, Bithin Datta, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

A procedure for optimal modification of a regional potentiometric surface designed solely on the basis of quantitative considerations, is presented. The modification in the potentiometric surface is necessary to incorporate groundwater quality criteria in a critical subsystem of the entire region. The resulting optimal regional potentiometric surface ensures: sustained groundwater yields from the aquifer, compliance with water quality constraints at critical cells of the sub· system (which are identified by a solute transport simulation model), and the most economic conjunctive management of surface and groundwater.

Electrodeposition And Analysis Of Tin Selenide Films, R. D. Engelken, Jack L. Boone, A. Shahnazary Jan 1986

Electrodeposition And Analysis Of Tin Selenide Films, R. D. Engelken, Jack L. Boone, A. Shahnazary

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Sn1±xSe films have been electrodeposited from aqueous solutions containing SnCl2 and ionically dissolved SeO2 or H2SeO3 and DMF solutions containing SnCl2 and molecularly dissolved selenium powder. The as-deposited films ranged from amorphous to polycrystalline and exhibited indirect or nondirect bandgaps from 0.85 to 0.95 eV. There was little difference between the appearance or material data of the films grown by the two techniques. Direct reaction between Sn++ and H2SeO3 or HSeO3_ in the aqueous solutions yielded a Se/SnxSe suspension/precipitate. Although this does not seem to have any serious effect on the deposition process, it does produce a decrease in the …

A Two-Dimensional, Three-Phase Reservoir Simulator Using The Impes Formulation, Ralph Ross Roesler Jan 1986

A Two-Dimensional, Three-Phase Reservoir Simulator Using The Impes Formulation, Ralph Ross Roesler

Masters Theses

"A numerical model for two dimensional, three-phase fluid flow has been developed using the IMPES formulation. Reservoir heterogeneities have been included, such as areal variations in porosity, permeability, thickness, and depth from a reference point. The model can also solve the problem of variable bubble points.

To check the accuracy of the model, a comparison was made with the Buckley-Leverett technique of predicting waterflood performance. The reservoir in the comparison is a 40 acre five spot with an initial gas saturation of 15 percent. The study shows that the two models are in good agreement, except for differences due to …

Measurement Of The Dusty Gas Model Parameters For Activated Carbon, Philip James Gloor Jan 1986

Measurement Of The Dusty Gas Model Parameters For Activated Carbon, Philip James Gloor

Masters Theses

"Included in the dusty gas equation are three constants, C0, C1 and C2, which depend only upon the porous medium. Values for C0 and C1 can be obtained for a particular porous material by performing pure gas flow experiments and a value for C2 can be obtained for the same material by performing Wicke-Kallenbach experiments. In this work, values for the dusty gas model parameters, for activated carbon, were obtained by performing the necessary experiments. The design and operation of the experimental equipment is presented along with the results obtained. The activated …

Selection Of Remedial Engineering Techniques For Dioxin-Contaminated Soil Sites ; Based On Site Geological Characteristics, Jeffrey John Lux Jan 1986

Selection Of Remedial Engineering Techniques For Dioxin-Contaminated Soil Sites ; Based On Site Geological Characteristics, Jeffrey John Lux

Masters Theses

"Specific geologic, hydrologic, and topographic characteristics influence the selection of technologies employed in the remediation of sites affected by dioxin-contaminated soil. These characteristics are significant in the selection of equipment and methods for excavation and materials processing.

The only currently sociologically acceptable method of treatment of dioxin-contaminated soils is incineration. As more is learned concerning the nature of dioxin sorption to soil particles and the mobility of dioxin in the environment, long-term storage in underground mines, and land burial appear to offer strong potential alternatives. Strong public sentiment against non-destructive remedial options would have to be overcome. There are also …

The Modeling And Analysis Of Multi-Component, Multivalent Biospecific Adsorption, Bo Henrik Arve Jan 1986

The Modeling And Analysis Of Multi-Component, Multivalent Biospecific Adsorption, Bo Henrik Arve

Doctoral Dissertations

"A general model is presented and used to predict the dynamic behavior of the adsorption, wash, and elution stages of biospecific adsorption (affinity chromatography) in finite bath and column operations. The model accounts for film and pore diffusional mass transfer resistances and the rates of interaction between adsorbates and ligands. For column operations the effect of axial dispersion in the flowing fluid stream is included. The model is applicable to single and multi-component biospecific as well as non-specific adsorption, and the adsorbates may be monovalent or multivalent. In the elution stage both non-selective and selective elution of monovalent adsorbates is …

Propagation Of Optical Waves In Tapered Fibers And Metallic Wave Guides, Bahram Zandi Jan 1986

Propagation Of Optical Waves In Tapered Fibers And Metallic Wave Guides, Bahram Zandi

Dissertations and Theses

The equations tor the propagation of Electromagnetic and Optical waves in tapered fibers and metallic waveguides are derived. Solutions are derived for the displacement of the beam from the waveguide axis as a function of distance along the axis, and also tor the beam width as a function of distance. These equations are solved numerically for a variety of tapered guides. Experiments are conducted which verify the theoretical results.

A New Automated Pulse Testing Analysis Method Applying Inflection Point Theory, Jose Maria Donoso Jan 1986

A New Automated Pulse Testing Analysis Method Applying Inflection Point Theory, Jose Maria Donoso

Masters Theses

"This paper describes a new technique for pulse test analysis that combines the simplicity of the tangent method with the result repeatability of the iterative methods. Inflection points are used instead of time lag with the added advantage that they are calculated by a simple algorithm and are not subject to graphical misinterpretation. Charts are made for the calculation of transmissibility and storage for unequal pulse and shut-in periods from 0.1 to 0.9 relating inflection time to pulse response amplitude and dimensionless inflection time.

The graphs presented for this technique have the same dimensionless cycle period ranges (from 0.44 to …

Total Refraction At Oblique Incidence By A Transparent Bilayer Coating On A High-Index Transparent Or Absorbing Substrate, R. M.A. Azzam, Karim Javily Dec 1985

Total Refraction At Oblique Incidence By A Transparent Bilayer Coating On A High-Index Transparent Or Absorbing Substrate, R. M.A. Azzam, Karim Javily

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Transparent bilayer coatings that produce total refraction (TR) of obliquely incident monochromatic light into an underlying substrate are considered. When the substrate is transparent, it is shown that TR takes place without any accompanying change of polarization. Totally refracting bilayers are realizable in the IR where high-refractive-index substrates are available. This is illustrated by a BaF2–ZnSe bilayer on a Ge substrate at a 10.6-μm (CO2-laser) wavelength and 45° angle of incidence. Limited changes of the angle of incidence, wavelength, and refractive indices and thicknesses of the two films of the bilayer are introduced, and their effects …

Investigation Of Electronic Holography Using Spice Computer Simulation Experiments, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee Dec 1985

Investigation Of Electronic Holography Using Spice Computer Simulation Experiments, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Using SPICE experiments, it has been possible to verify most of the important aspects of electronic holography. The generation and properties of dynamic echoes under different types of nonlinearities have been extensively tested, and some new information has been garnered in the process. The case of pulse and generalized memory echoes has also been tested, and the results have been fairly satisfactory. Most of all, the simplicity with which the intriguing concept of memory echoes has translated into the circuit implementation on SPICE, and the closeness of the results to predicted behavior have been somewhat of a pleasant surprise.

Microencapsulation As An Alternative To Emulsification For Preparing As A For Use In Papermaking, William J. Corriveau Dec 1985

Microencapsulation As An Alternative To Emulsification For Preparing As A For Use In Papermaking, William J. Corriveau

Masters Theses

The sizing chemical ASA is emulsified to make i t compatible with the papermaking process. Unfortunately, emulsified ASA is chemically reactive with water at the elevated temperatures found in papermaking systems. As an alternative, encapsulated ASA was made and investigated for its stability towards water at elevated temperatures.

A handsheet procedure was developed to analyze emulsified and encapsulated ASA. It was concluded that the procedure gave statistically reproducible results. Investigations with the procedure revealed important variables concerning the laboratory and m ill application of ASA. Evidence indicated that retention of ASA was critical to sizing development.

Encapsulated ASA made for …

Beam Propagation In Periodic Quadratic-Index Waveguides, Lee W. Casperson Dec 1985

Beam Propagation In Periodic Quadratic-Index Waveguides, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Several techniques are described for studying the propagation of off-axis polynomial Gaussian beams in media having straight axes and periodic z variations of the quadratic refraction and loss coefficients. For some periodic variations, exact analytical solutions of the paraxial equations are possible, and for sufficiently slow variations, WKB solutions can always be obtained. All results are expressed in conventional beam matrix form.

Integrating Working At Home With Information Systems Management, Computerized Conferencing & Communications Center, Joseph C. Schuh

Computerized Conferencing and Communications Center Reports

The history of computerization has its origin in the automation of manual processes - searching out the segments that could be put on a computer. The intended result was that the entire job would be done faster and cheaper. Thus, current computer-based information systems tend to make more efficient use of computers than people. The management function, on the other hand, often seems to focus on competitive skills and salesmanship rather than on the ability to attract and hold talented people. But, such impersonal factors that have driven management practices are changing. There has been a complete reversal in the …
