Evaporation And Potential Evapotranspiration In Central Iraq, Ala H. Al-Barrak May 1964

Evaporation And Potential Evapotranspiration In Central Iraq, Ala H. Al-Barrak

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The principal objectives of this study were to compare several formulas for estimating pan evaporation and evapotranspiration and to derive new formulas or modify existing formulas that will better fit the data for central Iraq. Computed evaporation was compared with measured evaporation by determining the differences and the ratios. The pan evaporation formulas were also compared by expressing them all in the form
Ev = K CRCTCWCHCDTCSCM

Three pan evaporation formulas were modified. For the Meyer and Utah formulas, the constants were changed and expressions were derived …

Simplified Approach To The Problem Of Stability Of Soil Slopes Under Horizontal Earthquake And Pore Pressure, Dalim Kumar Majumdar May 1964

Simplified Approach To The Problem Of Stability Of Soil Slopes Under Horizontal Earthquake And Pore Pressure, Dalim Kumar Majumdar

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A problem that has confronted engineers for a great number of years is that of determining the stability of soil slopes. Many factors introduce complications into stability analysis. Most embankments contain heterogeneous soils, often of several types. This and other complications usually necessitate the use of a simplified cross section. At the same time, it is often necessary to adopt simplified average soil characteristics which represent actual characteristics as best as possible. Those steps which bear on the choice of the simplified section and the simplified soil characteristics are always important in stability analysis work. These steps are independent, however, …

The Design Criteria Of A Phoswich Transducer., Richard L. Crawford Apr 1964

The Design Criteria Of A Phoswich Transducer., Richard L. Crawford

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This dissertation is an experimental and theoretical treatise on the design criteria of a phoswich transducer. The major emphasis is on the application in a gamma-ray spectrometer. The conversion efficiency, gamma-ray cross sections, response to charged particles, luminescence decay time, spectral response and physical qualities are discussed, in considerable detail, in making the optimum choices for the inorganic crystal and the organic phosphor which will act as the charged particle anticoincident shield. The effect of the thickness of the anticoincident shield on resolution, the percentage of gamma-rays absorbed, the percentage of gamma-rays that are attenuated in energy and the lower …

Opposed Disc Plough Furrows Hard Kimberley Soils, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1964

Opposed Disc Plough Furrows Hard Kimberley Soils, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE work of reclaiming the eroded areas of the Ord River catchment has posed special problems for field staff of the Department of Agriculture engaged on this large scale project.

Thousands of miles of furrows must be contour-ploughed and seeded in extremely hard ground over big areas of eroded country.

Migratory Movements Of Emus And Control Efforts, John L. Long, T. J. Tozer Jan 1964

Migratory Movements Of Emus And Control Efforts, John L. Long, T. J. Tozer

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ALTHOUGH little data has been recorded on movements or migrations of the Emu (Dromaius novea-hollandiae), it is well known throughout the farming community that some such movement occurs in September and October in most years at least.

Calibration Of Irrigation Headgates By Model Analysis, Gaylord V. Skogerboe, Vaughn E. Hansen Jan 1964

Calibration Of Irrigation Headgates By Model Analysis, Gaylord V. Skogerboe, Vaughn E. Hansen

Reports

Introduction

The purpose of this research project was to calibrate the slide gates used by the D.M.A.D. Company (Delta, Melville, Abraham and Deseret Irrigation Companies). These gates, which number more than 600, are located throughout the distribution system. Each gate is placed in a concrete box 4 feet wide, 3-1/2 feet deep and 4 feet long. The structure is used as a means of diverting the water and is also used as a measuring device.

A similar structure, but with a different type of slide gate, was calibrated in 1914. At the time rating tables were prepared which listed the …

Crossings For Channels And Drains In The Ord River Area, K S. Cole Jan 1964

Crossings For Channels And Drains In The Ord River Area, K S. Cole

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ON farms irrigated by surface methods it is essential to provide crossings over channels and drains.

These crossings must be wide and strong enough to take the biggest farm machinery.

A Study Of Turbulent Mass Transfer In A Wetted-Wall Column, David William Bunch Jan 1964

A Study Of Turbulent Mass Transfer In A Wetted-Wall Column, David William Bunch

Doctoral Dissertations

"The field of mass transfer is one of great interest to the chemical engineer. An understanding of this field is vital in the design of many types of chemical processing equipment, particularly in the areas of distillation, extraction, absorption, adsorption, and reactor analysis and design.

However, much of the knowledge in this area at the present time is in the form of empirical relationships, and the basic theory is still not well delineated. This lack of understanding leads to expensive and over-sized or under-sized equipment.

A particular area within this field which needs additional investigation is the theory of mass …

The Effects Of Granular Size On The Thermal Conductivity Of Fine Sand, Fikri Yalvac Jan 1964

The Effects Of Granular Size On The Thermal Conductivity Of Fine Sand, Fikri Yalvac

Masters Theses

"The Thomas method (1) for determining the thermal conductivity of solid materials can be used for the determination of the thermal conductivity of granular materials. In this thesis this method has been used to determine the effect of the granular size of sand cn its thermal conductivity.

River sand was classified according to size by the Tyler Standard Screen Scale into 50-60, 50-80, 80-100, 100-200, and below 200 mesh size. These sands were used for the experiments. The clay was separated from these samples to obtain pure river sand for the experiments.

According to the International Critical Tables, the thermal …

Planning New Farm Dams : Excavated Earth Tanks, J E. Watson, J. C. Grasby Jan 1964

Planning New Farm Dams : Excavated Earth Tanks, J E. Watson, J. C. Grasby

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

A GOOD farm dam is a valuable asset, and well worth its cost, but there are many aspects to consider when a new dam is required. Careful planning with adequate testing and checking will help to get the best value for money and reduce the chance of costly failures.

This article discusses these aspects in relation to the excavated earth tank type of dam.
