Reports

Summary: Groundwater development frequently provides a means whereby tremendous new economic opportunities are opened up. If supplies are overdrawn (mined) the ensuing regional economy may be able to affort replacements from more costly sources. In the United States the Salt River Valley of Arizona and the valleys of California provide examples. Two cases are treated in this paper, Israel and West Pakistan. In Israel, besides furnishing more than half of the basic source of water suppply, groundwater development provides opportunity for both quantity and quality management, which makes possible use of surface supplies and reclaimed sewage as firm rather than …

Using Remote Infrared Sensors To Detect Changes In Moisture Conditions On Natural Watersheds, Ralph D. Briscoe, Frank W. Haws Jan 1967

Using Remote Infrared Sensors To Detect Changes In Moisture Conditions On Natural Watersheds, Ralph D. Briscoe, Frank W. Haws

Reports

Foreword: This report summarizes the results of laboratory measurements of the infrared reflectance of selected living plants typical of the natural watersheds in northern Utah. Data indicate that the IR reflectance decreases as the moisture content of the soil decreases and the moisture tension in the soil increases. Additional data will be collected in the field to confirm the results and to further tests the feasibility of using IR reflectance of vegetation as an indicator of soil moisture conditions on the watershed. Mr. Briscoe, Research Physicist, has been responsible for the gathering of laboratory data and has written the manuscript …

Feasibility Study Of A Capacitance-Type Electronic Sediment-Sensing Device, C. Earl Israelsen, Duane G. Chadwick Jan 1967

Feasibility Study Of A Capacitance-Type Electronic Sediment-Sensing Device, C. Earl Israelsen, Duane G. Chadwick

Reports

Difficulties caused by sediment carried in natural streams have existed since earliest times. Although instruments and techniques for measuring stream discharge have existed for many years, only recently have attempts been made to measure sediment carried by the streams. The earliest observations of sediment discharge in the United States were made by Captain Talcott in the Mississippi River in 1838 (1). More or less continuous samples of sediment from the Rio Grande have been collected by the United States Geological Survey since 1879, and from the Colorado River Basin since 1925. Studies of sediment transport are seriously hampered by the …

An Investigation Of The Creep Characteristics Of Portland Cement Mortar Under Static And Dynamic Strain, Ikram-Ul-Haq Dar Jan 1967

An Investigation Of The Creep Characteristics Of Portland Cement Mortar Under Static And Dynamic Strain, Ikram-Ul-Haq Dar

Doctoral Dissertations

"The combined effect of static and dynamic loads on design of underground openings is currently receiving much attention. It is known that the time-dependent behavior of rock is considerably different when a dynamic load is superimposed on prestressed rock. The shape of an underground opening has a definite influence on the magnitude of the local stresses and these may be significantly larger than those due to the weight of the overlying rock alone. Under these conditions, even a small dynamic load in the form of vibrations caused by blasting, drilling and related operations may increase the stress beyond a critical …

The Mechanism Of The Electrooxidation Of Acetylene On Gold, James W. Johnson, J. L. Reed, William Joseph James Jan 1967

The Mechanism Of The Electrooxidation Of Acetylene On Gold, James W. Johnson, J. L. Reed, William Joseph James

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Acetylene has been oxidized anodically in aqueous solutions at 80 °C on gold electrodes. It was found that the partial oxidation to CO2 was accompanied by a polymer formation. Effects of potential, acetylene partial pressure, pH, and temperature on the rate (current) were measured. A discontinuity in the Tafel curves was noted that indicated a change in the reaction mechanism with potential. The discontinuity was also pH dependent. A mechanism involving the discharge of H2O and/or OH− has been proposed that is consistent with the experimental results. © 1967, The Electrochemical Society, Inc. All rights reserved.

Continuous Countercurrent Evaporation Through Porous Water-Repellent Membrane With Pressure Above Atmospheric, Yung C. Hsu Jan 1967

Continuous Countercurrent Evaporation Through Porous Water-Repellent Membrane With Pressure Above Atmospheric, Yung C. Hsu

Masters Theses

"An experimental method for measuring mass transfer rates at pressures above atmospheric has been developed for the case of continuous countercurrent evaporation through porous water-repellent membranes. The final developed equipment is suitable for operation under pressures up to 50 psig and at temperatures near the boiling point of 7% salt water when high flow rates are reached. Rates of evaporation of water through the membrane were measured, and the data and results were used to examine the effects of operating conditions on the over-all mass transfer resistance. Least squares equations for fitting the data were also obtained. Over-all mass transfer …

Determining The Transfer Matrices Of Tapered Multiwire Transmission Lines, Clyde A. Vandivort Jan 1967

Determining The Transfer Matrices Of Tapered Multiwire Transmission Lines, Clyde A. Vandivort

Masters Theses

"The advent of monolithic and integrated microelectronic circuits has aroused interest in passive multilayered thin film networks. The basic thin film network is shown in Figure 1. This structure consists of alternate resistive and dielectric layers sandwiched together. Such devices are referred to as distributed parameter RC networks. The reduction of volume and increased reliability offered by thin film devices has caused considerable effort to be extended in the analysis of their characteristics....

The incremental equivalent circuit given in Figure 2 stems directly from the above physical parameters and is the circuit used as a basis for the analysis that …

Construction Of A Laboratory Type, Convertible Excitation Argon Laser, Arthur P. Reckinger

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis is to describe the construction of a general purpose, convertable [sic] excitation, laboratory type, argon laser. Quartz tubing was used in the final model while attempts to use alumina were made during earlier work. The final model has total optical power output of 230 mw at a discharge current of 29 amperes in the dc excitation mode. Provision was also made to utilize RF or pulsed excitation. The device is built so that several values of optical transmittance are available with a wide range of mirror placement"--Abstract, page ii.

Scanning Properties Of Unsymmetrically Loaded Aperture Arrays, Gary Dean Brunner Jan 1967

Scanning Properties Of Unsymmetrically Loaded Aperture Arrays, Gary Dean Brunner

Masters Theses

"Radiation patterns resulting from an array of waveguide-fed apertures, filled with assymmetrically [sic] cut dielectric inserts, in an infinite ground plane were investigated. The results of Blumberg and Hemmen concerning single apertures were applied to a two-aperture array, with emphasis upon obtaining an array capable of scanning in the far field through changes in the permittivity of the assymmetrically [sic] cut dielectric inserts. Scanning was shown to be possible with up to a 60⁰ scan angle with a "push-pull" method of varying permittivities, in which the permittivity of one insert is raised while the other is lowered. The aperture field …

Analog Simulation Of A Plug Flow Tubular Reactor, Jon Douglas Carson Jan 1967

Analog Simulation Of A Plug Flow Tubular Reactor, Jon Douglas Carson

Masters Theses

"This thesis stresses the importance of analog and digital computers in the field of reaction kinetics. The analog computer is used to simulate a chemical reaction, the hydrolysis of acetic anhydride. The hydrolysis reaction takes place in a tubular reactor. The reactor is 3/4 inch in diameter and 20 feet long. These reactor dimensions allow the reaction system to approach plug flow, if the reactants flow through the reactor at turbulent flow rates. The physical, reactor, system is used to obtain experimental data for the hydrolysis reaction. The data is obtained at reactor temperatures between 75 and 100°F. Feed concentrations …

Stresses In A Thick Spherical Shell, David Wayne Moore Jan 1967

Stresses In A Thick Spherical Shell, David Wayne Moore

Masters Theses

"This thesis reports a method to evaluate the stresses in a segment of a thick spherical shell. In the numerical examples loads due to thermal expansion as the shell is constrained at the free edge and a dead load acting vertically downward were considered for a shell assumed pinned but free to rotate and for a shell assumed completely fixed at the edge. A concrete shell was specifically studied but the method would also apply to a shell of any homogeneous, isotropic material"--Abstract, page i.

Anodic Dissolution Of Zinc In Potassium Nitrate, Martin E. Straumanis, J. L. Reed, William Joseph James Jan 1967

Anodic Dissolution Of Zinc In Potassium Nitrate, Martin E. Straumanis, J. L. Reed, William Joseph James

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The apparent valence of pure zinc dissolving anodically in 3% KNO3 was determined as a function of current density, temperature, and ultrasonic agitation. The apparent valence of zinc dissolving anodically at 24°C diminishes from 2.01 ± 0.01 at low current densities to 1.86 at about 50 ma and remains fairly constant up to about 80 ma cm−2. This valence is affected to some extent by the preparation, e.g., polishing of the electrode, but is independent of its structure (mono- or polycrystal). Ultrasonic vibrations do not influence the apparent valence at high current densities. In all cases a black film …

A Plastic Stress Analysis Of Cylindrical Wafers Under Elastically Deformable Compression Plates, Robert L. Davis, J. W. Jackson Jan 1967

A Plastic Stress Analysis Of Cylindrical Wafers Under Elastically Deformable Compression Plates, Robert L. Davis, J. W. Jackson

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper represents an analysis of the pressure distribution occurring in axially loaded cylindrical wafers with, and without, elastic radial constraints. The purpose of this report is to demonstrate the resulting stress patterns that occur in short compression specimens frequently used in determining material properties, and in the opposed-anvil, or Bridgman-type, high-pressure cells. The influence of radial constraints, material strain hardening, wafer diameter-to-height ratio, anvil or plate deflection, and the wafer-anvil interface friction on the resulting stress distributions have been examined. The integrated normal stress distribution across the specimen surface has been verified experimentally via numerous tests in which each …

Skid Testing With An Automobile, Rolands L. Rizenbergs, Hugh A. Ward Jan 1967

Skid Testing With An Automobile, Rolands L. Rizenbergs, Hugh A. Ward

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A study was conducted to evaluate the theoretical and practical aspects of using an automobile as a testing device for measurement of pavement slipperiness. Every parameter and significant event in the excursion history of a skidding automobile was measured and recorded. The resultant skid-resistance values, twenty-five in all, were compared and correlated. As a result of the study, the measurement of time in the velocity increment between 30 mph to 20 mph was selected as an interim standard test. A number of experiments were also conducted to aid in the interpretation of test results and to establish control tolerances for …

Dynamic Response Of Plates Due To Moving Loads, Theodore F. Raske, Alois L. Schlack Jan 1967

Dynamic Response Of Plates Due To Moving Loads, Theodore F. Raske, Alois L. Schlack

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An analysis based on linear theory is presented for determining the dynamic response and the conditions of resonance for a simply supported rectangular plate acted upon by two types of moving loads corresponding to: (1) a point force of variable magnitude oscillating about a fixed position on the plate, and (2) a point force of constant magnitude traveling in a circular orbit about a fixed position on the plate. In addition to the ordinary resonance as produced by a variable magnitude load concentrated at a fixed position on the plate, resonance of the plate may occur due to the changing …

The Anodic Dissolution Of Cadmium, James W. Johnson, E. Deng, S. C. Lai, William Joseph James Jan 1967

The Anodic Dissolution Of Cadmium, James W. Johnson, E. Deng, S. C. Lai, William Joseph James

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The anodic dissolution of cadmium has been studied in aqueous solutions containing Cl−, Br−, I−, Ac−, SO4=, and NO3− ions. The normal valence (+2) was found in all solutions with the exception of NO3−. The apparent valence (calculated) of cadmium ions in nitrate solutions varied from 1.2 to 2.0 and was found to be a function of NO3− concentration, current density, and temperature. An anodic dissolution mechanism has been proposed involving local corrosion and disintegration of the anode which is consistent with the experimental results. © 1967, The Electrochemical Society, Inc. The Effect Of Concentration On The Viscosities Of Solutions Of Linear Flexible High Polymers, Lung Yu Chou, Jacques L. Zakin Jan 1967

The Effect Of Concentration On The Viscosities Of Solutions Of Linear Flexible High Polymers, Lung Yu Chou, Jacques L. Zakin

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Viscosity-concentration results in the moderately concentrated range for four samples of polyisobutylene (molecular weights of 1.3 x 104 to 1.0 x 106) in cyclohexane (concentrations up to 4.7 g./dl.) and in benzene (concentrations up to 7.0 g./dl.) at 24°C. (a theta solvent) showed molecular weight and goodness of solvent dependencies similar to those reported earlier for three other polymers. For polyisobutylene, polystyrene, and a copolymer of styrene and methyl methaerylate in good solvents, viscosity-concentration data plotted as ηsp. C[η] vs. k′[η]C fit a single curve. The linear region of this curve suggests that the Huggins equation is useful to C[η] …
