A New Speed Planning Method Based On Predictive Curvature Calculation For Autonomous Driving, Beki̇r Öztürk, Volkan Sezer
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
As the number of vehicles in traffic is increasing day by day, the accident rates and driving effort are significantly raising. For this reason, ensuring safety and driving comfort is becoming more and more important. Driver assistance systems are the most common systems that are adopted for this purpose. With the development of technology, lane tracking support and adaptive cruise control systems are now being sold as standard equipment. More advanced research is being done for fully autonomous driving. One of the most critical parts of autonomous driving is speed profile planning. In this paper, a curvature-based predictive speed planner …
An Empirical Study Of Memorization In Nlp, Xiaosen Zheng, Jing Jiang
An Empirical Study Of Memorization In Nlp, Xiaosen Zheng, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A recent study by Feldman (2020) proposed a long-tail theory to explain the memorization behavior of deep learning models. However, memorization has not been empirically verified in the context of NLP, a gap addressed by this work. In this paper, we use three different NLP tasks to check if the long-tail theory holds. Our experiments demonstrate that top-ranked memorized training instances are likely atypical, and removing the top-memorized training instances leads to a more serious drop in test accuracy compared with removing training instances randomly. Furthermore, we develop an attribution method to better understand why a training instance is memorized. …
Intelligibility Of Medically Related Sentences In Quiet, Speech-Shaped Noise, And Hospital Noise, Tessa Bent, Melissa Baese-Berk, Erica E. Ryherd, Sidney Perry
Intelligibility Of Medically Related Sentences In Quiet, Speech-Shaped Noise, And Hospital Noise, Tessa Bent, Melissa Baese-Berk, Erica E. Ryherd, Sidney Perry
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
Noise in healthcare settings, such as hospitals, often exceeds levels recommended by health organizations. Although researchers and medical professionals have raised concerns about the effect of these noise levels on spoken communication, objective measures of behavioral intelligibility in hospital noise are lacking. Further, no studies of intelligibility in hospital noise used medically relevant terminology, which may differentially impact intelligibility compared to standard terminology in speech perception research and is essential for ensuring ecological validity. Here, intelligibility was measured using online testing for 69 young adult listeners in three listening conditions (i.e., quiet, speech-shaped noise, and hospital noise: 23 listeners per …
Digitalization Of Construction Project Requirements Using Natural Language Processing (Nlp) Techniques, Fahad Ul Hassan
Digitalization Of Construction Project Requirements Using Natural Language Processing (Nlp) Techniques, Fahad Ul Hassan
All Dissertations
Contract documents are a critical legal component of a construction project that specify all wishes and expectations of the owner toward the design, construction, and handover of a project. A single contract package, especially of a design-build (DB) project, comprises hundreds of documents including thousands of requirements. Precise comprehension and management of the requirements are critical to ensure that all important explicit and implicit requirements of the project scope are captured, managed, and completed. Since requirements are mainly written in a natural human language, the current manual methods impose a significant burden on practitioners to process and restructure them into …

A Discussion On Supplier Selection Modeling Approaches, Sheida Etemadidavan, Andrew J. Collins
Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference
Supplier selection is a subfield of supply chain management that involves multiple steps in order for decision-makers to find suitable suppliers. Supplier selection is important as it could influence the whole company positively or negatively. It has, recently, become a topic of interest because of the recent pandemic and its effect on the global supply chain, which causes supply shortages. As such, the focus of this paper is on characteristics of decision-making modeling approaches, specifically agent-based modeling and multi-agent systems, in supplier selection, as its modeling has always been a challenge for companies due to its complex nature.

Human-Machine Communication
The proliferation and integration of social technologies has occurred quickly, and the specific technologies with which we engage are ever-changing. The dynamic nature of the development and use of social technologies is often acknowledged by researchers as a limitation. In this manuscript, however, we present a discussion on the implications of our modern technological context by focusing on processes of socialization and communication that are fundamentally different from their interpersonal corollary. These are presented and discussed with the goal of providing theoretical building blocks toward a more robust understanding of phenomena of human-computer interaction, human-robot interaction, human-machine communication, and interpersonal …

Autism has been characterized by a tendency to attend to the local visual details over surveying an image to understand the gist–a phenomenon called local interference. This sensory processing trait has been found to negatively impact social communication. Although much work has been conducted to understand these traits, little to no work has been conducted to intervene to provide support for local interference. Additionally, recent understanding of autism now introduces the core role of sensory processing and its impact on social communication. However, no interventions to the end of our knowledge have been explored to leverage this relationship. This work …

Entity-Driven Fact-Aware Abstractive Summarization Of Biomedical Literature, Amanuel Alambo, Tanvi Banerjee, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Michael Raymer
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
As part of the large number of scientific articles being published every year, the publication rate of biomedical literature has been increasing. Consequently, there has been considerable effort to harness and summarize the massive amount of biomedical research articles. While transformer-based encoder-decoder models in a vanilla source document-to-summary setting have been extensively studied for abstractive summarization in different domains, their major limitations continue to be entity hallucination (a phenomenon where generated summaries constitute entities not related to or present in source article(s)) and factual inconsistency. This problem is exacerbated in a biomedical setting where named entities and their semantics (which …

Efficient Information Retrieval For Software Bug Localization, Saket Khatiwada
Efficient Information Retrieval For Software Bug Localization, Saket Khatiwada
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Software systems are often shipped with defects. When a bug is reported, developers use the information available in the associated report to locate source code fragments that need to be modified to fix the bug. However, as software systems evolve in size and complexity, bug localization can become a tedious and time-consuming process. Contemporary bug localization tools utilize Information Retrieval (IR) methods for automated support to minimize the manual effort. IR methods exploit the textual content of bug reports to capture and rank relevant buggy source files. However, for an IR-based bug localization tool to be useful, it must achieve …
A New Similarity-Based Multicriteria Recommendation Algorithm Based Onautoencoders, Zeynep Batmaz, Ci̇han Kaleli̇
A New Similarity-Based Multicriteria Recommendation Algorithm Based Onautoencoders, Zeynep Batmaz, Ci̇han Kaleli̇
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Recommender systems provide their users an efficient way to handle information overload problem by offering personalized suggestions. Traditional recommender systems are based on two-dimensional user-item preference matrix constructed depending on the users' overall evaluations over items. However, they have begun to present their preferences under various circumstances. Thus, traditional recommendation techniques fail to process multicriteria ratings during the recommendation process. Multicriteria recommender systems are an extension of traditional recommender systems that utilize multicriteria-based user preferences. Multicriteria recommender systems provide more personalized and accurate predictions compared to traditional recommender systems. However, the increased amount of data dimension causes sparsity to be …

Developing An Adaptable Best Value Contractor Selection Tool For Federal Construction Projects, Robert B. Kitson
Theses and Dissertations
Currently, there is no Air Force-wide best practice or standard for using an other-than lowest price source selection process for construction projects. Installations often award contracts using Lowest Price Technically Acceptable (LPTA) because of perceived cost and time savings. However, a heavy reliance on LPTA often leads to long-term decreases in quality and value. To allow the Air Force to receive the best value for its construction funding, a simple and adaptable tool was developed that allows installations to pursue contractor selection for construction projects by other-than lowest price methods. This research conducted a systematic literature review to obtain a …

Many safety and health risks are faced daily by workers in the field of construction. There is unpredictability and risk embedded in the job and work environment. When compared with other industries, the construction industry has one of the highest numbers of worker injuries, illnesses, fatalities, and near-misses. To eliminate these risky events and make worker performance more predictable, new safety technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Wearable Sensing Devices (WSD) have been highlighted as effective safety systems. Some of these Wearable Internet of Things (WIoT) and sensory devices are already being used in other industries to …
Measuring And Comparing Social Bias In Static And Contextual Word Embeddings, Alan Cueva Mora
Measuring And Comparing Social Bias In Static And Contextual Word Embeddings, Alan Cueva Mora
Dissertations
Word embeddings have been considered one of the biggest breakthroughs of deep learning for natural language processing. They are learned numerical vector representations of words where similar words have similar representations. Contextual word embeddings are the promising second-generation of word embeddings assigning a representation to a word based on its context. This can result in different representations for the same word depending on the context (e.g. river bank and commercial bank). There is evidence of social bias (human-like implicit biases based on gender, race, and other social constructs) in word embeddings. While detecting bias in static (classical or non-contextual) word …
