Annealing Characteristics Of Neutron Irradiated Silicon Transistors, J. R. Chott, C. A. Goben Jan 1967

Annealing Characteristics Of Neutron Irradiated Silicon Transistors, J. R. Chott, C. A. Goben

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

When a transistor is subjected to neutron irradiation, a component of base current proportional to neutron fluence is induced. From the effects of annealing on the base and collector Currents the conclusion was drawn that there is an apparent difference in the annealing characteristics between the neutral and the space-charge regions of the semiconductor device. This study of the anomalous annealing indicates that the neutron-induced component of base current is a result of one, or a combination, of the following mechanisms: A quasi-tunneling recombination phenomena in the emitter-base space-charge region, or an influence of the p-n junction electric field on …

Dynamic Response Of Plates Due To Moving Loads, Theodore F. Raske, Alois L. Schlack Jan 1967

Dynamic Response Of Plates Due To Moving Loads, Theodore F. Raske, Alois L. Schlack

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An analysis based on linear theory is presented for determining the dynamic response and the conditions of resonance for a simply supported rectangular plate acted upon by two types of moving loads corresponding to: (1) a point force of variable magnitude oscillating about a fixed position on the plate, and (2) a point force of constant magnitude traveling in a circular orbit about a fixed position on the plate. In addition to the ordinary resonance as produced by a variable magnitude load concentrated at a fixed position on the plate, resonance of the plate may occur due to the changing …

The Anodic Dissolution Of Cadmium, James W. Johnson, E. Deng, S. C. Lai, William Joseph James Jan 1967

The Anodic Dissolution Of Cadmium, James W. Johnson, E. Deng, S. C. Lai, William Joseph James

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The anodic dissolution of cadmium has been studied in aqueous solutions containing Cl−, Br−, I−, Ac−, SO4=, and NO3− ions. The normal valence (+2) was found in all solutions with the exception of NO3−. The apparent valence (calculated) of cadmium ions in nitrate solutions varied from 1.2 to 2.0 and was found to be a function of NO3− concentration, current density, and temperature. An anodic dissolution mechanism has been proposed involving local corrosion and disintegration of the anode which is consistent with the experimental results. © 1967, The Electrochemical Society, Inc. The Effect Of Concentration On The Viscosities Of Solutions Of Linear Flexible High Polymers, Lung Yu Chou, Jacques L. Zakin Jan 1967

The Effect Of Concentration On The Viscosities Of Solutions Of Linear Flexible High Polymers, Lung Yu Chou, Jacques L. Zakin

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Viscosity-concentration results in the moderately concentrated range for four samples of polyisobutylene (molecular weights of 1.3 x 104 to 1.0 x 106) in cyclohexane (concentrations up to 4.7 g./dl.) and in benzene (concentrations up to 7.0 g./dl.) at 24°C. (a theta solvent) showed molecular weight and goodness of solvent dependencies similar to those reported earlier for three other polymers. For polyisobutylene, polystyrene, and a copolymer of styrene and methyl methaerylate in good solvents, viscosity-concentration data plotted as ηsp. C[η] vs. k′[η]C fit a single curve. The linear region of this curve suggests that the Huggins equation is useful to C[η] …

Mode Analysis Of The Unsymmetrically Fed Ground-Plane Aperture, John G. Hemmann Jan 1967

Mode Analysis Of The Unsymmetrically Fed Ground-Plane Aperture, John G. Hemmann

Masters Theses

"The problem of radiation from a waveguide-fed ground-plane aperture perturbed with a wedge-shaped dielectric insert was examined more carefully. The work initiated by Blumberg was continued, using a greater range of dielectric constants and smaller increments of angle.

Aperture field measurements were made over a range of dielectric constants for each wedge angle, in order to determine the change in amplitude distribution as a function of permittivity. Aperture phase measurements were also taken for selected angles. These were used with the amplitude data to predict, using numerical integration, the far-field radiation patterns of the perturbed aperture. Far-field patterns were then …

A Study Of Film Boiling Of Liquid Nitrogen And Liquid Argon Over A Wide Pressure Range With Cylindrical Heaters, V. J. Flanigan Jan 1967

A Study Of Film Boiling Of Liquid Nitrogen And Liquid Argon Over A Wide Pressure Range With Cylindrical Heaters, V. J. Flanigan

Masters Theses

""A film boiling heat transfer study was conducted with three different diameter cylindrical copper heaters over a wide range of pressures for nitrogen and argon with the heat transfer surface in the horizontal position. The data were compared to the commonly used film boiling heat transfer relations. The common relations were found to be considerably in error for the range of variables covered in this investigation. A semi-empirical equation for corresponding states fluids which correlates the available data as a function of the reduced temperature and reduced pressure was derived and discussed"--Abstract, page iii.

Vapor-Liquid Equilibria System : Chloroform, Carbon Tetrachloride, Isopropanol, Barnet H. Bursack

Theses

A study was made of the vapor-liquid equilibria of the ternary system: Chloroform (CHCl3), Carbon Tetra-chloride (CCl4) and Isopropanol (C3H8O). An Othmer still was used for the equilibria determination. Refractive index and density measurements were used to determine liquid and vapor compositions. A comparison between experimental and theoretical values was made using the Margules 3-suffix ternary equations for the correlation.

It was necessary to investigate the vapor-liquid equilibria of each of the three binary systems to evaluate the techniques and equipment used and obtain new data. Only one previous investigation of the …

A Procedure For The Measurement Of Glosso-Maxillary Forces, Howard L. Lilly Jr. Jun 1966

A Procedure For The Measurement Of Glosso-Maxillary Forces, Howard L. Lilly Jr.

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a clinically feasible procedure for recording the magnitudes of glosso-maxillary forces at four palatal loci using an electronic transducer system described by Lear et, al. (1965). Of particular interest was the development of a convenient and accurate calibration device for both intraoral and extraoral application. A further object of interest was the effect an acrylic carrier plate might introduce to the magnitude of force response. Finally whether or not any significant adaptation to the carrier plate or to the transducers occurs during a reasonable testing period (six to seven hours).

A calibration …

A Preliminary Experimental Study Of The Turbulence Decay In The Wake Of A Hemisphere In Free-Surface Flow, Jiin-Jen Lee May 1966

A Preliminary Experimental Study Of The Turbulence Decay In The Wake Of A Hemisphere In Free-Surface Flow, Jiin-Jen Lee

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Flows observed in open channels are usually turbulent. The word "turbulent" describes a motion in which an irregular velocity fluctuation (mixing or eddying motion) is superimposed on the main stream motion. The essential characteristic of turbulent flow is that the turbulent fluctuations are random in nature.

If Reynold's rule of averaging is used, the Navier-Stokes equations for laminar flow may be transformed into the Reynold's equations, which hold true for turbulent mean motion. The solution of Reynold's equations will properly describe turbulent flow. Unfortunately, the number of unknowns exceeds the number of equations; therefore the use of mathematical method to …

Piggery Septic System, N E. Macintyre Jan 1966

Piggery Septic System, N E. Macintyre

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ONE of the problems of intensive houses for pigs is the disposal of the dung and urine.

If proper arrangements are not made to remove this, it soon accumulates in an offensive pile at one end of the piggery, making an excellent breeding ground for flies.

Manure Disposal From Piggeries, P Mcnamara Jan 1966

Manure Disposal From Piggeries, P Mcnamara

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Many new piggeries have been built during the past year as more farmers swing over to intensive housing.

In most cases the problem of effluent disposal has been overlooked. This article shows how some pig raisers are beating the problem.

Mastitis : Modified Teat Cups Give Better Back-Flushing, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1966

Mastitis : Modified Teat Cups Give Better Back-Flushing, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Back-flushing of the teat cups has not brought the expected reduction in the spread of mastitis in some dairy herds.

Replacement of the conventional nut-and-tail nipple with a special flushing nipple, or use of a one-piece teat cup liner, will ensure that flushing is efficient.

Individual Sow Feeders, P Mcnamara Jan 1966

Individual Sow Feeders, P Mcnamara

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FOOD is the major cost in any pig enterprise and it is particularly easy for waste to occur in the breeding herd.

Individual feeders enable the pigman to feed each sow according to her need, and enable the sows to eat their feed slowly or quickly as they choose.

Termites Or White Ants, Clee Francis Howard Jenkins Jan 1966

Termites Or White Ants, Clee Francis Howard Jenkins

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

TERMITES are commonly but erroneously called "white ants."

Actually they are more nearly related to cockroaches than to ants, but their general appearance and subterranean habits have given strong support to the popular designation.

They may be divided into two major groups from an economic point of view, viz., wood-dwelling and earth-dwelling termites.

Effect Of Artificial Roughness On Convection, Lee W. Burford Jan 1966

Effect Of Artificial Roughness On Convection, Lee W. Burford

Masters Theses

"Considerable work has been done in recent years, and is still being done, to find ways of increasing the heat transfer rate in fluid heat exchangers. One particular type of potential heat exchanger that has been studied analytically, as well as experimentally, is the use of artificially roughened tubing.

The test sections used in this experiment consisted of four aluminum pipes, three of which have been artificially roughened internally by machining ninety- degree V-shape grooves along the axis of the pipes. The grooves were 30/1000, 60/1000, and 90/1000 inches in depth. The remaining pipe was a smooth test section with …

Checking Rigid-Framed Structures By Extended Moment-Area Equations, Lucky Li-Chi Chow Jan 1966

Checking Rigid-Framed Structures By Extended Moment-Area Equations, Lucky Li-Chi Chow

Masters Theses

"Using the known moments obtained from the moment distribution solution, the extended moment-area equations are used to check whether or not delta x, delta y, delta theta are truly zero, or are any other quantity they are supposed to be. In order to get a reasonably correct answer, a solution must meet both the elastic checks and the static checks for their equilibrium and compatibility functions. Using the extended moment-area equations, the magnitudes of the slopes and deflections at all of the joints in framed structures can be found easily"--Abstract, page ii.

Bending Of Isosceles Right Triangular Plates, Ping-Tung Huang Jan 1966

Bending Of Isosceles Right Triangular Plates, Ping-Tung Huang

Masters Theses

"In this thesis the series expansion method is used to obtain the moments and deflections of an isosceles right triangular plate bent by arbitrary transverse loads. The method is based on using an antisymmetric load on a square plate. Two boundary conditions are solved and the numerical results obtained for these cases are tabulated"--Abstract, page ii.

A Study Of Stress Distribution And Measurement Of Axial Strain Around A Pilot Hole During Overboring, Varakantham Sreedhar Reddy Jan 1966

A Study Of Stress Distribution And Measurement Of Axial Strain Around A Pilot Hole During Overboring, Varakantham Sreedhar Reddy

Masters Theses

"Stress distribution around a pilot hole during overcoring was investigated. A study of axial strain on the borehole surface was undertaken. Two-dimensional epoxy resin models were prepared and stress frozen in a centrifuge. The stress-frozen models were examined under a direct-viewing polariscope. The magnitude of axial strain and the effect of strain relaxation on the pilot hole were measured on blocks of brittle materials. Factors contributing to discing of core during the overcoring operation were investigated and a mechanism of failure postulated. The loading conditions simulating in situ, core and bit pressures were applied individually to the brittle models and …

Modal Characteristics Of A Vibrating Truss, Edd Leighman Ghent Jr. Jan 1966

Modal Characteristics Of A Vibrating Truss, Edd Leighman Ghent Jr.

Masters Theses

"In this thesis, a complete technique is presented for the vibration analysis of any planar structure which can be classified in the broad category of trusses or frames. Although a theoretical backdrop is included for the' sake of completeness, the intent is to provide a technique that is readily adapted to computer usage and can be handled with a minimum of confusion or misunderstanding.

The problem is solved by the use of a displacement technique wherein the inertia and stiffness properties of a structure are calculated by superimposing the contributions of each component of the structure. The calculation of these …

"An anechoic chamber for use in the B-12 KHz range was designed and built for the purpose of obtaining the far field patterns of antennas and radiation systems. This chamber was evaluated and compared with various types of anechoic chambers from the standpoint of their "room performance."

The anechoic chamber is essentially a room lined with absorbing material, effective at microwave frequencies. The purpose of the absorbing material within the room is to present the reflection of the energy incident upon the walls of the room.

Measurements of the far field radiation pattern of an aperture in a ground plane, …

The Anodic Oxidation Of Maleic Acid, Larry D. Gilmartin Jan 1966

The Anodic Oxidation Of Maleic Acid, Larry D. Gilmartin

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to determine the mechanism of the anodic oxidation of maleic acid on platinized-platinum electrodes at 80⁰C. Current density-potential studies were conducted varying the parameters of maleic acid concentration and pH. The faradaic efficiency of the oxidation of maleic acid to yield CO₂ was determined. The effect of temperature on current density was also studied to determine the activation energy for the reaction. The oxidation of maleic acid occurred only in acidic solutions. The faradaic efficiency was found to be approximately 97 ± 5 per cent. A linear Tafel region was found which had a …

A Crystallographic Study Of The Pbzro₃-Pbtio₃-Bifeo₃ Ternary System., Dannie R. Clarida

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to conduct a crystallographic study of the PbZrO₃-PbTiO₃-BiFeO₃ ternary system, where all three components are perovskites. Lead zirconate is antiferroelectric, lead titanate is ferroelectric, and bismuth ferrate is thought to be ferroelectric. X-ray diffraction analysis was employed to determine the crystallographic structure and lattice parameters.

A tetragonal region was found to exist in the area of high PbTiO₃ content. A rhombohedral region occurred in the remainder of the system with high BiFeO₃ and PbZrO₃ content, except for an orthorhombic envelope along the PbZrO₃-BiFeO₃ side of the diagram up to approximately 70 per cent BiFeO₃.The …

A Numerical Solution For Beam-Columns On Non-Linear Foundations, Wendelin H. Mueller Iii Jan 1966

A Numerical Solution For Beam-Columns On Non-Linear Foundations, Wendelin H. Mueller Iii

Masters Theses

"A program for Matlock's recursive method, a numerical method which will analyze beams and columns with linearly varying spring supports, was modified to enable the solution of such members supported by non-linear springs. This modification was accomplished by an iterative technique. The final result of this paper is a computer program which can be used to solve beams or columns with non-linear spring supports, giving as output the deflection, slope, moment, shear, net load and curvature of the structure at uniformly spaced locations"--Abstract, page ii.

A Photoelastic Study Of The Stresses In A Deep Beam Using Partial Mirrors For Isochromatic Fringe Sharpening And Fringe Multiplication, Edward M. Raney Jan 1966

A Photoelastic Study Of The Stresses In A Deep Beam Using Partial Mirrors For Isochromatic Fringe Sharpening And Fringe Multiplication, Edward M. Raney

Masters Theses

"This paper is a photoelastic investigation of the stresses in a deep beam using partial mirrors to obtain isocromatic fringe sharpening and fringe multiplication. This method may be of particular value in photoelastic work for obtaining full field fringe multiplication and fringe sharpening for models which exhibit low fringe orders.

The photoelastic model used in this investigation is a deep beam with a length to depth ratio of one. A uniform load is applied over the center one-half of the beam. The beam is supported by two uniform loads distributed over a length of one-quarter the span.

A first approximation …
