Investigation Of Mental Workload In A Visual Inspection Task, Michel Alfandari
Investigation Of Mental Workload In A Visual Inspection Task, Michel Alfandari
Theses
This thesis consists of an investigation of the "mental workload" involved in a visual inspection task. A short-term laboratory experiment was conducted on twenty test subjects to study the effects of three typical job-related factors encountered in mental workload situations: load stress, time stress, and motivation. These effects were assessed through the subjects' performances as measured by speed and accuracy data. The analysis of the results revealed that an increase in load stress deteriorates both speed and accuracy, whereas time stress improves speed but only at the expense of accuracy. The expected positive influence of motivational factor (cash prizes) was …

Grab Samplers For Benthic Macroinvertebrates In The Lower Mississippi River, C. Rex Bingham, David B. Mathis, Larry G. Sanders, Eva Mclemore
United States Army: Publications
Data from 24 grab samples, eight each taken with the Standard Ponar, Petite Ponar, and Shipek grabs from a backwater habitat were statistically compared using one-way analysis of variance. Total grabs produced 5696 organisms and 24 distinct taxa. Results showed no difference in catch efficiency among grab samplers for distinct taxa, total densities, and densities of the dominant taxa: Lirceus sp., Ilyodrilus templetoni, Hexagenia sp., Limnodrilus cervix, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, Sphaerium sp., and immature Ilyodrilus. The Petite Ponar grab captured significantly fewer immature Limnodrilus. This was attributed to clumped distribution of these worms rather than difference …
Effects Of Manure Handling Systems On Swine Health, Joseph L. Taraba
Effects Of Manure Handling Systems On Swine Health, Joseph L. Taraba
Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates
Modern swine production confinement systems have brought about significant improvements in the quantity and quality of meat products for human consumption. This has been achieved because of the ability to maintain good environmental conditions and to apply sound management techniques, therefore, allowing the animals to achieve maximum performance. These intensive production systems have animals in close proximity to each which results in the large quantities of manure that must be handled. Thus the manure system becomes an integral part of the total production system. If the manure is not handled in a sanitary manner, if the gases and odors from …

Impacts Of Western Coal, Oil Shale, And Tar Sands Development On Aquatic Environmental Quality: A Technical Information Matrix; Volume 1 Introduction And Instructions, Jay J. Messer, Charles I. Liff, Kurt Gernerd, Frederick J. Post
Reports
Introduction: The Upper Colorado River Basin contains vast deposits of coal, oil shale, and tar sands, which could undergo extensive development should oil prices rise or an international situation restrict oil imports. Naturally, the prospect of development of these alternative fossil fuels resources has led to concern over how extraction and conversion activities will impact environmental quality. A thorough understanding of the nature and magnitude of the resulting envionemental impacts is a necessary prerequisite, if the costs and risks of such activites are to be weighed against the economic benefits. When we set out to evaluated these costs and risks, …

A Multivariate Water Quality Index For Use In Management Of A Wildland Watershed, Ramzi Mahmood, Jay J. Messer, Frank J. Nemanich, Charles I. Liff, Dennis B. George
Reports
Executive Summary: Summary: Multivariate statistical techniques were used to define a method for establishing a water quality index (WQI) for use in protecting the stream environment in a high mountain watershed. The purpose of the WQI was to aggregate water quality parameters in such a way that the effects of low level increments in mining, grazing, logging and other activities could be related to a change in the value of a single entity, aquatic environmental aquality, in a linear programming (LP) management model. Several data aggregation methods were explored, using water quality data collected over 5 years (1975-1979) by the …

Removal Of Nitrogen From Secondary Wastewater Effluent Through No 3-N Reduction Using Sulfur Dioxide (So2), Javid Ghorashian, V. Dean Adams, Dennis B. George
Reports
The overall purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of sulfur dioxide (SO2) to remove nitrate-nigrogen (i.e., reduction to a gaseous form) from the secondary wastewater effluent. To accomplish th above task, a jar test procedure was established and the concentration of NO3-N along with the concentration of NH3-N present in the secondary wastewater, treated with SO2, were measured initially and after 10 min, 20 min, 30 min, 40 min, and 24 hr. Then, the percent NO3-N removal was calculated, comparing the NO3-H concentrations measured in each treatment with the initial values. The above procedures were conducted for …
Catalytic Oxidation Of Sulfur Dioxide In Wastewater, Ernest J. Upton, V. Dean Adams
Catalytic Oxidation Of Sulfur Dioxide In Wastewater, Ernest J. Upton, V. Dean Adams
Reports
Sulfur dioxide has been shown to be an effective wastewater disinfectant. The aqueous sulfur dioxide creates and oxygen demand in the effulent which must be removed prior to discharge. Oxidation to sulfate is one means of accomplishing this task. Experiments were carried out to determine the effectiveness of transition metals and activated carbon as catalysts for the oxidation of S+IV species in wastewater. Both the metals and carbon are known catalysis, but what inhibitory effect the wastewater might have was unknown. Effectiveness was defined as a combination of catalyst life, effluent quality, and cost. Tradition metals were eliminated as potential …

Equipment For Local Hyperthermia Therapy Of Cancer, Charles F. Babbs, James R. Oleson, John A. Pearce
Equipment For Local Hyperthermia Therapy Of Cancer, Charles F. Babbs, James R. Oleson, John A. Pearce
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Rapid improvements in hyperthermia apparatus are being achieved by industrial and university-based research groups that have already led to the marketing of a variety of commercial systems for heat therapy of malignancy. These tissue heating systems employ microwaves, capacitively or inductively coupled radiofrequency current, or high intensity ultrasound to produce controlled local heating of tumor tissues. No single system is superior to others in all applications; each has its limitations.
Biology Of Local Heat Therapy For Cancer, Charles F. Babbs
Biology Of Local Heat Therapy For Cancer, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Successful cancer therapy must selectively destroy tumor tissue while sparing the host's normal tissues. Local heat treatment can have such a selective effect because abnormalities in tumor blood vessels supply less oxygen to heat-stressed tumor cells and are less efficient in cooling tumor tissue by blood perfusion.

Hydralazine-Enhanced Selective Heating Of Transmissible Venereal Tumor Implants In Dogs, William D. Voorhees Iii, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
This study was designed to test the hypothesis that vasodilator drugs can enhance selective heating of solid tumors by producing a favorable redistribution of blood flow between tumor and normal tissues. Subcutaneous transmissible venereal tumor implants were heated by inductive diathermy using Helmholtz coils in 8 dogs. The temperature rise in tumor and adjacent muscle was measured before and after giving hydralazine (0.5 mg/kg i.v.). Blood flow to the tumors and underlying muscle was measured with radioactive tracer microspheres. Before hydralazine treatment mean muscle blood flow was about one-third tumor blood flow (0.11 0.02 vs. 0.28 0.09 ml/min/g), …

Normal arterioles, in contrast to the abnormal microvasculature of many solid tumors, provide a target for selective drug action that can enhance local heat treatment of the tumors. Measurements of tissue blood flow with radioactive microspheres and estimates of changes in blood flow with thermal clearance methods revealed that vasodilator drugs either decreased or did not alter blood flow in hamster melanoma, rat hepatoma, and canine transmissible venereal tumor, while increasing perfusion in adjacent normal tissues 2 to 4-fold. Solutions of the bio-heat transfer equation, which take into account such selective effects of vasodilators on blood flow in normal tissues, …

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
This study was conducted to evaluate the hemodynamic effectiveness of a new modification of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), termed interposed abdominal compression- CPR (IAC-CPR). IAC-CPR utilizes all the steps of standard CPR with the addition of abdominal compressions interposed during the release phase of chest compression. Ventricular fibrillation was induced electrically in 10 anesthetized dogs, and either IAC-CPR or standard CPR was initiated while arterial and venous blood pressures and cardiac output were monitored. The two CPR methods were alternated every three minutes over a period of thirty minutes. The addition of interposed abdominal compressions to standard CPR improved arterial pressures …
