Waveform Analysis And Application To A Model Of The Egg Waveform, Eu-Rune Chang
Waveform Analysis And Application To A Model Of The Egg Waveform, Eu-Rune Chang
Theses
The purpose of thesis is to describe and investigate a model of electroglottogram waveform. At the beginning, we generate a set of sine waveform models to analyze by using Fourier transform theory. Then, according to the electroglottogram is conjectured to be related to the area contact between the vocal folds, we assume a simple model of vocal fold vibratory motion is used to estimate the vocal fold contact area as function of time. Therefore, we modified and developed the mathematic EGG waveform model by using personal computer program computation to become a set of realistic EGG waveform models, which are …

Analysis And Design Of A Surface Microengineered Silicon Humidity Sensor, Uei-Yanq Chen
Theses
This thesis details the design for a solid-state humidity sensor which utilizes state-of-the-art silicon technology. The sensor design utilizes a microengineered surface which includes a polysilicon airbridge structure as heater and sensor element in an integrated device. The operation of this device depends upon the small variation of thermal convection coefficient which effects the temperature of the heated element within the device. The temperature of the polysilicon bridge is monitored by means of a resistance bridge. In one design(sensor I) a single polysilicon airbridge is used for both the heater and resistance sensing element. Also a second inferior design (sensor II) …
The Strategic Planning Dilemma In American Manufacturing, James Andrew Kiray
The Strategic Planning Dilemma In American Manufacturing, James Andrew Kiray
Theses
The decline of American manufacturing competitiveness is a highly publicized and controversial issue. This publicity has led to a panacea of solutions being offered to this problem. As a result, many conflicting viewpoints have emerged, which have aided in making any solution to this problem extremely difficult. Top executives have been inundated with recommendations for change, causing confusion at all levels of management.
In an effort to define the underlying problems existing within the American strategic planning process, this author has selected current literature which supports his own views, and has expended upon these views.
Once these underlying problems are …

Simulation Of Aids Patient Detoxification By An Extracorporeal Device And Related Experimental Studies, Mansoor Yusuf Kapadvanjwala
Simulation Of Aids Patient Detoxification By An Extracorporeal Device And Related Experimental Studies, Mansoor Yusuf Kapadvanjwala
Theses
A simple numerical simulation of an AIDS patient detoxification by an extracorporeal device for the removal of virus has been designed. The mathematical model accounts for healthy white cells (W) attacking and destroying the virus (V), while at the same time the virus attacks and infects certain white cells. The infected white cells (Wi) serve as a site for viral growth, and finally the cell is lysed, releasing a large number of viruses in the blood stream. This model can be used to predict concentrations over a given period for the patient.
The device incorporates an antitwister mechanism …

Oxidation Of Toluene, Benzene And P-Xylene In A Photoreactor, Shiey-Shiun Horng
Theses
A new photoreactor was designed with stainless steel to oxidize refractory chemicals found on the EPA priority list. This new system was investigated by conducting experiments with three three model compounds, namely, toluene benzene and p-xylene. While toluene and benzene reactions are similar, they are faster with UV/ozone than UV/H2O2 and p-xylene reacts even faster with UV/ozone than UV/H2O2. The experimental data obtained were analyzed by GC and used to interpret the reaction kinetics from proposed models. The rate constants and mass transfer coefficients were found by using the Rosenbsrock Hillclimb optimization algorithm. …
Highway Safety Research, Development, And Technology Transfer, John A. Deacon
Highway Safety Research, Development, And Technology Transfer, John A. Deacon
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Late in 1987, the Federal Highway Administration assembled a seven-member panel which, guided by a primary contractor, Harrison Boyd & Associates, was charged with the task of developing a recommended five-year research, development, and technology transfer program for highway safety starting in the 1990s. As a part of the task, each panel member prepared an individual position paper to stimulate and focus panel discussions and, ultimately, to provide the basis for a consensus paper. This represents one such individual paper.
Although it is believed that significant safety gains can be achieved in the 1990s and beyond simply by more extensive …

Complementing Radiologic Data With Geology – A Case History, Dennis Mcgrane
Complementing Radiologic Data With Geology – A Case History, Dennis Mcgrane
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The goal in characterizing radioactively contaminated soil is to quantify the degree of contamination and its parameters. A cost effective, small scale characterization is done by performing a surface radiological survey with subsurface data coming from boreholes augered in a tight grid pattern. Confidence in the between-hole extrapolations depends on the grid size. However, at the widely contaminated site in Maywood, New Jersey a grid width of 100 feet was the only economical choice. Accurate contamination parameters were determined despite the wide hole spacings once geologists and health physicists learned how local geologic conditions controlled the contamination's location and extent. …

Implementation Of Remedial Measures To Contain A Pcb Spill, M. D. Huag, J. Atwater, R. B. Knight, P. Kozicki, A. Lissey
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A large spill of Polychlorinated Biphenols (PCB's) occurred at Federal Pioneer Limited's Regina Plant in 1976. The City of Regina is underlain by a relatively shallow aquifer which supplies a significant proportion of its drinking water. A remedial measures plan was developed to contain this spill within the boundaries of the site and clean up any contamination which had spread to adjacent property. The remedial measures plan developed involved limiting or reversing the normal downward hydraulic gradient. The three principle measures introduced to accomplish this reversal included the construction of a cutoff wall around the site, installation of a thick …

Performance Of An Earthdam And Cut-Off Through Deep Alluvium, N. H. Wade, L. F. Wei, L. J. Courage, R. A. Keys
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The main dam at the Bighorn development consists of a zoned earthfill embankment with a concrete cut-off wall constructed through the river alluvium by the slurry trench technique. Upon first filling of the reservoir in 1972, erratic drops in piezometric heads in the alluvium upstream of the cut-off and significant downstream leakage prompted the construction of a weight berm at the downstream toe and implementation of a program of regular monitoring of all piezometers and seepage measuring facilities. Concern for the integrity of the structure was not allayed until completion of a dam safety evaluation in 1984. The paper summarizes …

An assessment of a 6.78-acre parcel of oil-producing land with one active, seven idle, and two abandoned oil wells was performed. Following the collection and review of site data, an evaluation was made of the toxic properties of on-site soils for the presence of hazardous substances. Soil samples were collected by advancing boreholes at eight locations. These locations were selected on the bas is of the results of an aerial photographs review, a geophysical survey, and statistical sampling design techniques. An analytical program was conducted to test for chemicals that would likely be present from the oil field operations. It …

Design And Construction Of A Soil Bentonite Slurry Wall Around An Operating Facility Superfund Site, A. S. Burgess, G. S. Laird, M. S. Leonard
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A soil bentonite slurry wall was designed for an NPL site to stop further migration of chemicals in a complex aquifer system, and to facilitate the removal of possible chemical sources from saturated zones beneath the site. Pumping from within the slurry wall will maintain inward and upward hydraulic gradients and thus stop further lateral or vertical migration of chemicals from the contained area. The slurry wall was constructed under an exceptionally detailed Quality Assurance; Quality Control review by the Contractor and two independent consulting firms. Ground movements, vibration levels and opacity of dust produced during construction were monitored for …
