An Analytical Study Of The Effects Of Age And Experience On Flight Safety, Patrick C. Guide
An Analytical Study Of The Effects Of Age And Experience On Flight Safety, Patrick C. Guide
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
The purpose of this study was to determine whether there are any significant decreases in the safety and effectiveness of pilots by age 60. The data for this study came from records of general aviation accidents (i.e., for private pilots, commercial pilots, and air transport pilots), and airline accidents (Part 121). These accident data were acquired from many specialized aviation data banks; these include: NTSB, AOPA, FAA, and the COMSIS Research Corporation. The data were organized into groups according to the ages of the pilots-in-command responsible for the accidents. Groupings progress in five-year increments starting at 20-24, and ending with …
Signal Processing Methodologies For An Acoustic Fetal Heart Rate Monitor, Robert A. Pretlow Iii
Signal Processing Methodologies For An Acoustic Fetal Heart Rate Monitor, Robert A. Pretlow Iii
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Research and development is presented of real time signal processing methodologies for the detection of fetal heart tones within a noise-contaminated signal from a passive acoustic sensor. A linear predictor algorithm is utilized for detection of the heart tone event and additional processing derives heart rate. The linear predictor is adaptively "trained" in a least mean square error sense on generic fetal heart tones recorded from patients. A real time monitor system is described which outputs to a strip chart recorder for plotting the time history of the fetal heart rate. The system is validated in the context of the …
Development And Characterization Of Monoclonal Antisperm Antibodies: Potential For Contraception, Dilrowshan H. Haque
Development And Characterization Of Monoclonal Antisperm Antibodies: Potential For Contraception, Dilrowshan H. Haque
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
There is an expressed need to develop a greater variety of safe contraceptive methods which would find acceptance worldwide, particularly in developing countries. Immunization against spermatozoa might be such a method as judged by the accumulated evidence from studies on human females and in a number of female animal species.
Two extraction techniques were used for sperm membrane antigen isolation. The first technique involved NP-40 detergent for antigen extraction from human motile sperm and the second technique employed homogenized human testis for antigen extraction. Using these immunogens, sperm membrane-specific monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) were developed. When these antisperm MAbs were subjected …

A Simulation Analysis Of The Usaf Commissary Customer Service Environment In Support Of Afcoms Store-Level Staff Sizing, Bruce H. Fritz Ii
Theses and Dissertations
This Thesis sought to determine the probable impact of the proposed Air Force Commissary Service (AFCOMS) manpower standard for customer service (manpower standard) upon commissary operating environments and to investigate the sensitivity of performance parameters within the customer service system. Specific problems addressed were: (1) Comparison of the cashier manpower requirements calculated by the proposed AFCOMS manpower standard to those determined by a simulation model under similar conditions; (2) Calculation of the expected mean and maximum waiting times in the commissary given the proposed standard; and (3) Determination of the sensitivity of customer waiting time performance measures to variations in …
Indiana Model Zoning Ordinance, T. William Patterson
Indiana Model Zoning Ordinance, T. William Patterson
Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Publications
This HERPICC model is intended as a basis for helping Indiana counties, cities, and towns to write or revise local regulatory ordinances. Having such a model is especially urgent because field trips taken throughout the state have revealed that many jurisdictions are vulnerable to lawsuits because their ordinances are out of date and do not conform to the current provisions of the Indiana Code. This situation is made more serious by the lack of adequate professional planning staff or consultants available to local governments. Many may have received inaccurate advice from their attorneys. Too often, attorneys are not familiar enough …

Lateral Stiffness And Damping Coefficient Of Soils For Seismic Analysis Of Buried Pipelines, Xinjian Zhang, Leon R. L. Wang, Isao Ishibashi
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
The stiffness and damping coefficient of soil are critical parameters in the Winkler's model for the seismic analysis of buried pipelines. This paper presents an analytical study in calculating the lateral dynamic stiffness (elastic and inelastic) and damping coefficient of soils for the seismic analysis of buried pipelines. The effects of the depth of the buried pipeline and the variation of Poisson's ratio of soils are cons1dered. In the analysts, first, by using the elastic half-space theory, the elastic stiffness and geometrical damping coefficient of soils are obtained. From the numerical results, the elastic stiffness and geometrical damping coefficient by …

Analysis Of The Effects Of The Commander's Battle Positioning On Unit Combat Performance, Thomas I. Pratt
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Commander's battle positioning on unit combat performance. Research was focused on analyzing the location of the Battalion/Task Force Commander during daytime deliberate attacks conducted at the U.S. Army's National Training Center, Fort Irwin, CA. Forty battles, from January 1986 to September 1989, provided the basis for this study. Information that described the Commander's location, a general description of the battle, and unit measures of effectiveness, was collected for each battle and put in a format that allowed for ease of analysis. This study database was explored using numerous …
Centrifugal Modeling Of Leaking Underground Storage Tanks, Kuo-Neng George Chang
Centrifugal Modeling Of Leaking Underground Storage Tanks, Kuo-Neng George Chang
Theses
There are between 2 to 3.5 million Underground Storage Tanks (UST) located through this nation. Most of these tanks store gasoline and fuel oil. Many tanks in fact are or will soon be leaking, thus making them one of the major sources of groundwater contamination in USA. The fate and transport of chemicals from the leaking USTs is estimated from mathematical models. A major difficulty in these modeling efforts has been a crucial lack of information concerning the constitutive relationships governing multiphase contaminant movement.
Centrifugal modeling is an alternative to mathematical modeling, which may give an insight to the problem …
Development Of Techniques Of Artificial Intelligence In Identifying The Different Machined Surfaces, Yi-Ching Chou
Development Of Techniques Of Artificial Intelligence In Identifying The Different Machined Surfaces, Yi-Ching Chou
Theses
This thesis deals with the identification of different machined surfaces with artificial inteligence techniques. There are five kinds of machining operations: grinding, turning, milling, EDM and waterjet which determine the characteristics of resulting surfaces. Topology of various specimens is measured using the surfanylizer. Twenty one parameters are extracted from the measurements to describe the characteristics. In this thesis, we develop neural and expert systems that recoginize and classify surfaces according to the machining methods.

Analysis Of Protein Adsorption On Retrieved Human Vascular Grafts Using Immunogold Labelling With Silver Enhancement, N. P. Ziats, N. S. Topham, D. A. Pankowsky, J. M. Anderson
Cells and Materials
The adsorption of proteins on biomedical materials such as vascular grafts is important in modulating thrombosis, one eventual cause of vascular graft failure. We have identified proteins expressed on the surfaces of retrieved vascular grafts to determine if certain proteins were present at the end stage of vascular failure. Scanning electron microscopic analysis of protein adsorption on the surfaces of retrieved vascular prostheses was determined using antibodies to human blood proteins fibrinogen, fibronectin, Hageman factor (factor XII) and factor VIII/von Willebrand Factor. The detection of these proteins on the blood contacting surface was evaluated by immunogold labelling with protein A-gold …

Scanning Electron Microscopic Evaluation Of The Fractured Surfaces Of Canine Calculi From Substrata With Different Surface Free Energy, H. M. W. Uyen, W. L. Jongebloed, H. J. Busscher
Cells and Materials
The strength of adhesion between dental calculus and enamel or dentin surfaces determines the ease with which the calculus can be removed by brushing or professional dental treatment. In this study, we examined the adhesion of canine calculi formed on substrata with different surface free energies (sfe) and roughness by means of scanning electron microscopy. In 4 beagle dogs fenestrated crowns were made on the upper fourth premolars. Subsequently, facings of glass (sfe = 120 mJ. m-2), bovine enamel (sfe = 85 mJ.m-2), bovine dentin (sfe = 92 mJ.m-2), polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA, sfe = 56 mJ.m-2) and polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE, sfe = …

Polylysine Stimulation Of Ectopic Cartilage Formation, Rocky S. Tuan, Dina M. Turchi, David S. Kreitzer
Cells and Materials
Cartilage development, or chondrogenesis, is a process which involves the condensation of prechondrogenic mesenchymal cells, followed by the expression of the cartilage phenotype characterized by the biosynthesis of cartilage-specific, extracellular matrix components. We have previously shown that the cationic biopolymer, polylysine (PL), is able to stimulate chondrogenesis by embryonic limb bud mesenchymal cells in vitro. In this study, we have evaluated the chondrogenesis-stimulating activity of PL in vivo using an experimental system consisting of chick embryonic muscle explants, which were grafted onto the chorioallantoic membrane of chick embryos maintained in long-term shell-less culture. The muscle grafts were treated with PL …
Fracture Toughness And Fractography Of Dental Ceramics, H. J. Mueller
Fracture Toughness And Fractography Of Dental Ceramics, H. J. Mueller
Cells and Materials
Chevron-notch short-rod fracture toughness (KIv) and scanning electron microscopy analyses of leucite-, tetrasilicic fluormica-, and alumina- reinforced dental ceramics and control materials were investigated. Short-rod fracture toughness is a measure of the bulk resistance to crack propagation but not of the surface resistance to crack initiation. Results indicated significant differences in KIv among the following six groups (from lowest to highest (a) Dicor and Optec, (b) Optec, Excelco's Incisal, Macor and Excelco's Gingival, (c) Excelco's Brush-O-Paque, (d) Vitadur-N core, (e) Coming's 9606 glass-ceramic, and (t) Vita Hi Ceram. Good agreement occurred with published data for Macor and 9606. Comparisons of …

A Comparative Study Of Bovine Pericardium Mineralization: A Basic And Practical Approach, Branko B. Tomazic, Chakwan Siew, Walter E. Brown
Cells and Materials
The biomineralization of bovine pericardium (BP) heart valve bioprostheses was investigated by simulation of the process under in vitro and in vivo conditions. The nature and composition of calcific deposits that formed in human heart valve bioprostheses were compared with the mineral formed on BP discs immersed in a calcifying medium or subcutaneously implanted into Sprague-Dawley rats. The early stage of experimental biomineralization in vitro took place on the surface only, while in vivo deposition appeared to be intrinsic, as documented by histological cross sections. The chemical composition of the initial mineral phase formed under in vitro conditions had a …
The Articular Cartilage Of The Rabbit Knee: A Scanning Electron Microscopy Study, Daniel Levanon, Haim Stein
The Articular Cartilage Of The Rabbit Knee: A Scanning Electron Microscopy Study, Daniel Levanon, Haim Stein
Cells and Materials
The surface morphology of eight sectors in the rabbit knee articular cartilage was studied using scanning electron microscopy. Cartilage surfaces showed wide variation in the shape, dimensions , and density of gaps and acellular processes. Patellas and load-bearing condyles revealed a relatively higher density of processes than did load-free condyles. Surface processes and gaps were abundant. They might represent a condensation product(s) of hyaluronic acid/protein complex that accrues during cycles of loading/weight bearing.

Dusts Produced During Cutting Of Modern Splinting Bandages, R. Wytch, D. W. Gregory, R. Clayton, D. Wardlaw
Cells and Materials
Previous work carried out by the authors (Wytch et al ., 1988a) has shown that airborne dust generated during removal of orthopaedic casts with a power saw could represent a respiratory hazard. Further work has been carried out on all types of splinting bandage currently available in the United Kingdom to assess the potential dust hazard when sawing these materials. It has been shown that although plaster of Paris bandage produces significant concentrations of airborne dust, most of the polyurethane-impregnated fabric bandages generate extremely low levels of dust and in the case of the non-glass fabrics, the level is insignificant. …

Osha Compliance By Small And Medium Business, Bill W. Trammell
Graduate Student Work
It is hypothesized that even though governmental rules, regulations, and policies along with ethical. social, and moral dictates within our communities now require, even demand, that businesses and industry provide their employees a healthful and safe working environment the opposite is often the case. There is a substantial number of employers, within the small to medium sized industrial manufacturers, whose chief executive officers: (1) fail to implement a safety program within their organization; (2) fail to provide more than token attention to employee safety and the intent of the OSHA regulations; (3) have no sincerity or intention to complying with …

Transformation Of 1-Aminonapththalene At The Surface Of Smectite Clays, Calvin C. Ainsworth, Bruce D. Mcveety, Steven C. Smith, John M. Zachara
United States Department of Energy: Publications
One-aminonaphthalene is sorbed onto the Na-saturated smectite clays, montmorillonite and hectorite, by cation exchange. In the presence of Fe3+ either in the clay structure or on the clay surface, sorption is followed by the formation of a blue-colored complex, with the continuous disappearance of aminonaphthalene from solution and the clay surface. The rate of aminonaphthalene disappearance decreases as pH increases. With time, four major products that appear to be structural isomers of N(4- aminonaphthyl)-1-naphthylamine are produced. A simplified model of this transformation is suggested to be the oxidation by Fe3+ of sorbed aminonaphthalene forming a radical cation-clay complex. …
What To Look For And Why When Buying A Telecommunications Switch
What To Look For And Why When Buying A Telecommunications Switch
ACUTA: Other Publications
There are three characteristics of institutions of higher education that have a strong
impact on telecommunications:
. Campus Environment
. Multiple Service Populations
. Limited Budgets
Each characteristic translates into requirements for an effective telecommunication
system.
To Serve the Campus Environment
A campus is usually the first image associated with the word "college" or "university." Typically, institutions of higher education are housed in several buildings which may be fairly close together, or spread over some distance, perhaps reaching across a city or even a state.
To serve the campus user, a system must provide feature transparency, regardless of location. Small …
