A Cad-Mlca Interface For Next-Generation Dfe Tools, Jun He
A Cad-Mlca Interface For Next-Generation Dfe Tools, Jun He
Theses
Environmental concerns and rising product disposal costs have pressed manufactures to make more environmentally friendly products and customers to use and dispose of them in an environmental responsive way. Thus the practice of Design for Environment (DFE) is becoming essential in today's industrial environment. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) provides different ways for the environmental assessment of products. One critical step in performing lifecycle assessment of any product design is to collect design-related data. The common way based on manual input for traditional DFE tools is not only cumbersome and time-consuming but also error-prone.
This thesis presents the characteristics of a …

Studies On The Formation Of Dna-Cationic Lipid Composite Films And Dna Hybridization In The Composites, Murali Sastry, Vidya Ramakrishnan, Mrunalini Pattarkine, Krishna N. Ganesh
Faculty Works
The formation of composite films of double-stranded DNA and cationic lipid molecules (octadecylamine, ODA) and the hybridization of complementary single-stranded DNA molecules in such composite films are demonstrated. The immobilization of DNA is accomplished by simple immersion of a thermally evaporated ODA film in the DNA solution at close to physiological pH. The entrapment of the DNA molecules in the cationic lipid film is dominated by attractive electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged phosphate backbone of the DNA molecules and the protonated amine molecules in the thermally evaporated film and has been quantified using quartz crystal microgravimetry (QCM). Fluorescence studies …

Dynamic Characterization Of Aluminum Softball Bats, Danny V. Lee
Dissertations and Theses
On January 1, 2000, the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) imposed maximum bat performance limitations on commercial softball bats. The ASA adopted a testing standard defined by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) to determine the bat performance factor (BPF), a normalized coefficient of restitution that must be less than 1.2 for the bat to be eligible for ASA sanctioned events.
The ASTM standard requires that the softball strike the bat, which is free to rotate in the horizontal plane, at 26.8 mfs ± 0.3 mfs (88 ftfs ± 1 ftfs) with little or no spin. The …

Satellite SO2 and ash measurements of Mount Spurr’s three 1992 volcanic clouds are compared with ground‐based observations to develop an understanding of the physical and chemical evolution of volcanic clouds. Each of the three eruptions with ratings of volcanic explosivity index three reached the lower stratosphere (14 km asl), but the clouds were mainly dispersed at the tropopause by moderate to strong (20–40 m/s) tropospheric winds. Three stages of cloud evolution were identified. First, heavy fallout of large (>500 μm) pyroclasts occurred close to the volcano (vent) during and immediately after the eruptions, and the cloud resembled an advected …

Sliding hip screws are routinely used to repair Garden III femoral neck factures. This research seeks to better understand the influence of the hip screw angle on the performance of the fixation. The mechanics of fractured femurs repaired with 135- and 150-degree sliding fixation devices are explored using experimental, finite element, and analytical modeling. The experimental study involves testing of both intact and fixated femurs; the finite element work centers on two-dimensional models of intact and fixated femurs; and the analytical modeling explores the forces, moments and stresses in the fixation. The analytical model predicts that the screw will serve …
Innovative Financing Options For Kentucky’S Transportation Infrastructure, Merl M. Hackbart
Innovative Financing Options For Kentucky’S Transportation Infrastructure, Merl M. Hackbart
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
A strong linkage exists between economic growth and the availability of an adequate and efficient transportation system. Due to its location, geography and economy, this linkage — particularly in regard to highway transportation — is critical to continued economic progress in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. However, Kentucky’s ability to provide the infrastructure investments needed to be competitive in the new “global economy” is constrained by the structure of its funding mechanism, the Road Fund. During the last two decades, Road Fund revenue growth has dramatically lagged the growth of motor vehicle travel. As a consequence, Kentucky faces highway investment needs …

Seismic Design Of Mixed And Hazardous Waste Landfills, Edward Kavazanjian Jr., Neven Matasovic
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Due to the absence of federal criteria, seismic design and performance criteria for mixed and hazardous waste landfills are generally developed on a project-specific basis, supplemented by state and project-specific standards. In developing project-specific criteria, the federal Subtitle D standards for seismic design of municipal solid waste landfills are often used as a minimum standard for mixed and hazardous waste facilities. Seismic performance standards are also usually developed on a project-specific basis, employing either a “withstand without harmful discharge” or a “withstand without damage” performance standard, depending on the certainty of continuing aftercare. Quantitative criteria established to demonstrate compliance with …

Risk Analysis In Geotechnical And Earthquake Engineering, State-Of-The-Art Practice Of Embankment Dams, D. N. D. Hartford
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Despite a proliferation of papers on quantitative risk analysis for dams during the past twenty years, risk analysis has not found widespread application in dam safety practice. Recent experience suggests that, despite a great deal of enthusiasm in the 1990’s, the professional opinion concerning the usefulness of risk analysis in dam safety practice is almost as divided now as it was in the early 1980’s. This paper presents an account of the history and development of risk analysis ln dam safety practice in the field of geotechnical earthquake engineering since its inception in the early 1960’s to September 2000. Against …

Using Gps As A Reference System To Hit A Moving Target, Daryl J. Burnette
Using Gps As A Reference System To Hit A Moving Target, Daryl J. Burnette
Theses and Dissertations
The Affordable Moving Surface Target Engagement (AMSTE) project attempts to develop affordable solutions to the precise moving target surface target engagement problem. Up to this point, most of the error analysis performed for the AMSTE project has been at the error variance level, generating root-sum-square (RSS) total errors from error budgets consisting of constant error variances. In reality, the level of error for both Global Positioning System (GPS) positioning and radar targeting systems is highly dependent upon the given situation (such as the distance between sensor and target, the altitude differences, etc.) This research generates a more comprehensive model of …

Weapon System Environmental Life Cycle Cost Methodologies And Models, William H. Kale Iii
Theses and Dissertations
Major Defense Acquisition Programs (MDAP) cost billions of dollars and have 30 to 50 year life spans. Numerous (federal, state, etc.) laws, Environmental Protection Agency regulations, and Executive Orders have driven DoD to develop and implement significant environmental policies within the past ten to fifteen years. Congressional mandate now requires each MDAP to evaluate its environmental life cycle cost (ELCC) to minimize these costs. This research focuses on the current methodologies and models used to predict and calculate the ELCC of a MDAP. This thesis analyzed the difficulties associated with using ELCC methodologies and models and examined several case studies …
