Network Anomaly Detection Using Management Information Base (Mib) Network Traffic Variables, Jun Li Aug 2004

Network Anomaly Detection Using Management Information Base (Mib) Network Traffic Variables, Jun Li

Dissertations

In this dissertation, a hierarchical, multi-tier, multiple-observation-window, network anomaly detection system (NADS) is introduced, namely, the MIB Anomaly Detection (MAD) system, which is capable of detecting and diagnosing network anomalies (including network faults and Denial of Service computer network attacks) proactively and adaptively. The MAD system utilizes statistical models and neural network classifier to detect network anomalies through monitoring the subtle changes of network traffic patterns. The process of measuring network traffic pattern is achieved by monitoring the Management Information Base (Mifi) II variables, supplied by the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) LI. The MAD system then converted each monitored …

Modeling Contaminant Transport And Fate And Subsequent Impacts On Ecosystems, Ming Fan

Dissertations

Assessing risks associated with the release of metals into the environment and managing remedial activities requires simulation tools that depict speciation and risk with accurate mechanistic models and well-defined transport parameters. Such tools need to address the following processes: (1) aqueous speciation, (2) distribution mechanisms, (3) transport, and (4) ecological risk. The primary objective of this research is to develop a simulation tool that accounts for these processes. Speciation in the aqueous phase can be assessed with geochemical equilibrium models, such as MINEQL+. Furthermore, metal distribution can be addressed mechanistically. Studies with Pb sorption to amorphous aluminum (HAG), iron (HFO), …

An Analysis Of The Conventional Wire Maintenance Methods And Transition Wire Integrity Programs Utilized In The Aviation Industry., Susan Jeruto Kiptinness

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aging aircraft wiring poses a significant threat to both commercial and military aircraft. Recent air disasters involving aging aircraft wiring have made it clear that aging wiring can be catastrophic. Aging of an electrical wiring system can result in loss of critical functions of equipment or loss of information regarding equipment operation. Either result can lead to an electrical failure causing smoke and fire, consequently being a danger to public health and aircraft safety.

Conventional maintenance practices do not effectively manage aging wiring problems. More proactive methods are needed so that aircraft wiring failures can be anticipated and wiring systems …

Assessing Six Residential Ventilation Techniques In Hot And Humid Climates, Florida Solar Energy Center, Neil Moyer Aug 2004

Assessing Six Residential Ventilation Techniques In Hot And Humid Climates, Florida Solar Energy Center, Neil Moyer

FSEC Energy Research Center®

The addition of mechanical ventilation air to "tight" homes in hot and humid climates may adversely impact health, building durability, comfort and energy use by raising indoor humidity levels (RH) above 50%. High indoor humidity has been linked to microbial growth, building material decay, discomfort, and increased energy use (Moyer, et al, 2001). High indoor humidity in "tight" homes with mechanical ventilation has been documented in various Building America projects in hot humid locations (Rudd 2003).

The research described here quantifies the energy use, and humidity impacts of six mechanical ventilation strategies installed serially in a new, Energy Star Manufactured …

An Intelligent Parameter Varying (Ipv) Approach For Non-Linear System Identification Of Base Excited Structures, Soheil Saadat, Gregory D. Buckner, Tadatoshi Furukawa, Mohammad N. Noori Aug 2004

An Intelligent Parameter Varying (Ipv) Approach For Non-Linear System Identification Of Base Excited Structures, Soheil Saadat, Gregory D. Buckner, Tadatoshi Furukawa, Mohammad N. Noori

Office of the Dean (CENG) Scholarship

Health monitoring and damage detection strategies for base-excited structures typically rely on accurate models of the system dynamics. Restoring forces in these structures can exhibit highly non-linear characteristics, thus accurate non-linear system identification is critical. Parametric system identification approaches are commonly used, but require a priori knowledge of restoring force characteristics. Non-parametric approaches do not require this a priori information, but they typically lack direct associations between the model and the system dynamics, providing limited utility for health monitoring and damage detection. In this paper a novel system identification approach, the intelligent parameter varying (IPV) method, is used to identify …

Hybrid Stochastic Models For Remaining Lifetime Prognosis, Steven M. Cox Aug 2004

Hybrid Stochastic Models For Remaining Lifetime Prognosis, Steven M. Cox

Theses and Dissertations

The United States Air Force is developing its next generation aircraft and is seeking to reduce the risk of catastrophic failures, maintenance activities, and the logistics footprint while improving its sortie generation rate through a process called autonomic logistics. Vital to the successful implementation of this process is remaining lifetime prognosis of critical aircraft components. Complicating this problem is the absence of failure time information; however, sensors located on the aircraft are providing degradation measures. This research has provided a method to address at least a portion of this problem by uniting analytical lifetime distribution models with environment and/or degradation …

The greatest odor, hydrogen sulfide and ammonia emission rates were from non-phototrophic lagoons during late spring (24.5 OU m-2 s-1, 3.2 μg-H2S m-2 s-1, 34.9 kg NH3-N ha-1 d-1, respectively). Non-phototrophic lagoon odor, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide emission rates were much higher in late spring than summer (24.5 vs. 4.8 …

Kalman Filtering With Uncertain Noise Covariances, Srikiran Kosanam, Daniel J. Simon Aug 2004

Kalman Filtering With Uncertain Noise Covariances, Srikiran Kosanam, Daniel J. Simon

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper the robustness of Kalman filtering against uncertainties in process and measurement noise covariances is discussed. It is shown that a standard Kalman filter may not be robust enough if the process and measurement noise covariances are changed. A new filter is proposed which addresses the uncertainties in process and measurement noise covariances and gives better results than the standard Kalman filter. This new filter is used in simulation to estimate the health parameters of an aircraft gas turbine engine.

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

We tested the hypothesis that glucose-insulin-potassium (GIK)-induced protection against myocardial infarction depends on ATP-dependent K+ (KATP) channel activation and is abolished by hyperglycemia before the ischemia. Dogs were subjected to a 60-min coronary artery occlusion and 3-h reperfusion in the absence or presence of GIK (25% dextrose; 50 IU insulin/l; 80 mM/l KCl infused at 1.5 ml·kg−1·h−1) beginning 75 min before coronary artery occlusion or 5 min before reperfusion. The role of KATP channels was evaluated by pretreatment with glyburide (0.1 mg/kg). The efficacy of GIK was investigated with increases in blood …

Assuring Power In A Disaster And Providing Energy Security, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young Jul 2004

Assuring Power In A Disaster And Providing Energy Security, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Daily use of a myriad of electrical and electronic devices has contributed to a steadily increasing dependence on electric power. The degree of importance of electricity is temporarily highlighted with any type of power outage, whether caused by a disaster as destructive as a Hurricane Andrew or as minor as an afternoon thunderstorm knocking down local utility lines. After September 11, terrorism added a new dimension to our definition of energy security. While the American public is dependent on utility providers to meet energy needs, it is the right and the responsibility of each citizen to become aware of energy …
