Control And Repair Of Bridge Deck Cracking, Robert J. Frosch, Sergio Gutierrez, Jacob S. Hoffman Nov 2010

Control And Repair Of Bridge Deck Cracking, Robert J. Frosch, Sergio Gutierrez, Jacob S. Hoffman

JTRP Technical Reports

Cracking of bridge decks poses a significant threat to the lifespan of our nation’s bridges. Cracking has been shown to occur in various climates and geographical areas and can be seen on various types of superstructures. Often these cracks appear before or shortly after opening the bridge to live loads. Cracks in the deck create a path for water and deicing salts to reach the steel, often leading to corrosion of the reinforcement, greatly reducing the durability of the deck. Measures must be taken during design and construction to control bridge deck cracking and prolong the lifespan of bridges. In …

Bio-Inspired Algorithms For Autonomous Deployment And Localization Of Sensor Nodes, Raghavendra V. Kulkarni, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Optimal deployment and accurate localization of sensor nodes have a strong influence on the performance of a wireless sensor network (WSN). This paper considers real-time autonomous deployment of sensor nodes from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Such a deployment has importance, particularly in ad hoc WSNs, for emergency applications, such as disaster monitoring and battlefield surveillance. the objective is to deploy the nodes only in the terrains of interest, which are identified by segmentation of the images captured by a camera on board the UAV. Bioinspired algorithms, particle swarm optimization (PSO) and bacterial foraging algorithm (BFA), are presented in this …

Plasma Mediated Molecular Delivery, Richard J. Connolly Oct 2010

Plasma Mediated Molecular Delivery, Richard J. Connolly

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Non-viral delivery of plasmid DNA has traditionally relied upon physical forces applied directly to target tissues. These physical methods typically involve contact between an applicator and the target tissue and often cause transient patient discomfort. To overcome the contact-dependent limitations of such delivery methodologies, an atmospheric direct current plasma source was developed to deposit ionized gas molecules onto localized treatment sites. The deposition of charged species onto a treatment site can lead to the establishment of an electric field with strengths similar to those used for traditional electroporation. In vitro experiments proved that this technology could transiently permeabilize cell membranes …

Strong (X)Html Compliance With Haskell's Flexible Type System, Paul G. Talaga, Steve J. Chapin Oct 2010

Strong (X)Html Compliance With Haskell's Flexible Type System, Paul G. Talaga, Steve J. Chapin

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

We report on the embedding of a domain specific language, (X)HTML, into Haskell and demonstrate how this superficial non-context-free language can be represented and rendered to guarantee World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) compliance. Compliance of web content is important for the health of the Internet, accessibility, visibility, and reliable search. While tools exist to verify web content is compliant according to the W3C, few systems guarantee that all produced content is compliant. We present CH-(X)HTML, a library for generating compliant (X)HTML content by using Haskell to encode the nontrivial syntax of (X)HTML set forth by the W3C. Any compliant document …

Design And Fabrication Of A Membrane Integrated Microfluidic Cell Culture Device Suitable For High-Resolution Imaging, Alla A. Epshteyn

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Malaria remains a serious concern for people living and traveling to warm climates in Africa, Asia, and some parts of America. Understanding the mechanism of the malaria parasite in the liver phase could lead to important discoveries for preventative and treatment therapeutics before the disease develops into the blood stage. While in vitro liver cell culture models have been explored, a device that mimics the liver cell architecture with the capability of high-resolution imaging has never been created. In this research, a cell culture microfluidic device was designed and fabricated with a membrane integrated design to mimic the architecture of …

Concurrent Muscoskeletal Dynamics And Finite Element Analysis Predicts Altered Gait Patterns To Reduce Foot Tissue Loading, Jason P. Halloran, Marko Ackermann, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert Oct 2010

Concurrent Muscoskeletal Dynamics And Finite Element Analysis Predicts Altered Gait Patterns To Reduce Foot Tissue Loading, Jason P. Halloran, Marko Ackermann, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Current computational methods for simulating locomotion have primarily used muscle-driven multibody dynamics, in which neuromuscular control is optimized. Such simulations generally represent joints and soft tissue as simple kinematic or elastic elements for computational efficiency. These assumptions limit application in studies such as ligament injury or osteoarthritis, where local tissue loading must be predicted. Conversely, tissue can be simulated using the finite element method with assumed or measured boundary conditions, but this does not represent the effects of whole body dynamics and neuromuscular control. Coupling the two domains would overcome these limitations and allow prediction of movement strategies guided by …

High-Pressure And High-Temperature Density Measurements Of N-Pentane, N-Octane, 2,2,4-Trimethylpentane, Cyclooctane, N-Decane, And Toluene, Yue Wu

Theses and Dissertations

Information on the density of hydrocarbons at high pressures and temperatures is of great importance in many fields, such as the study of ultra-deep reservoirs up to ~240 MPa and 250°C. However, density data at such high pressures and temperatures are often not available in the literature. In this study, experimental densities are reported for n-pentane, n-octane, 2,2,4-trimethylpentane, cyclooctane, n-decane, and toluene to ~280 MPa and ~250°C. These experimental densities are in good agreement with available literature data, although the literature data for many of these fluids do not extend to the pressures and temperatures utilized in this study.

Auxiliary State Variables For Rotor Crack Detection, Zbigniew Kulesza, Jerzy T. Sawicki Oct 2010

Auxiliary State Variables For Rotor Crack Detection, Zbigniew Kulesza, Jerzy T. Sawicki

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

In the present study, a new model-based method for rotor crack detection and crack location is proposed. The finiteelement model of the rotor-bearing system accounts for the breathing mechanism of the crack. The model of the rotor system is augmented with an auxiliary single-degree-of-freedom oscillator. The observer is designed and the estimates of its two auxiliary state variables are proposed as crack indicators. The crack location along the shaft is determined by designing a set of observers, which calculate the values of these indicators for different possible crack locations along the shaft. The proposed method is validated numerically and the …

We present a new method for the quantitative estimation of blood flow velocity, based on the use of the Radon transform. The specific application is for measurement of blood flow velocity in the retina. Our modified fundus camera uses illumination from a green LED and captures imagery with a high-speed CCD camera. The basic theory is presented, and typical results are shown for an in vitro flow model using blood in a capillary tube. Subsequently, representative results are shown for representative fundus imagery. This approach provides absolute velocity and flow direction along the vessel centerline or any lateral displacement therefrom. …

Expanding Algorithmic Randomness To The Algebraic Approach To Quantum Physics: Kolmogorov Complexity And Quantum Logics, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Physicists usually assume that events with a very small probability cannot occur. Kolmogorov complexity formalizes this idea for non-quantum events. We show how this formalization can be extended to quantum events as well.

Surface Morphology Of Platelet Adhesion Influenced By Activators, Inhibitors And Shear Stress, Melanie Groan Watson Oct 2010

Surface Morphology Of Platelet Adhesion Influenced By Activators, Inhibitors And Shear Stress, Melanie Groan Watson

Doctoral Dissertations

Platelet activation involves multiple events, one of which is the generation and release of nitric oxide (NO), a platelet aggregation inhibitor. Platelets simultaneously send and receive various agents that promote a positive and negative feedback control system during hemostasis. Although the purpose of platelet-derived NO is not fully understood, NO is known to inhibit platelet recruitment. NO's relatively large diffusion coefficient allows it to diffuse more rapidly than platelet agonists. It may thus be able to inhibit recruitment of platelets near the periphery of a growing thrombus before agonists have substantially accumulated in those regions.

Results from two studies in …

An Improved Layer-By-Layer Self-Assembly Technique To Generate Biointerfaces For Platelet Adhesion Studies: Dynamic Lbl, Juan Manuel Lopez

Doctoral Dissertations

Layer-by-layer self-assembly (LbL) is a technique that generates engineered nano-scale films, coatings, and particles. These nanoscale films have recently been used in multiple biomedical applications. Concurrently, microfabrication methods and advances in microfluidics are being developed and combined to create "Lab-on-a-Chip" technologies. The potential to perform complex biological assays in vitro as a first-line screening technique before moving on to animal models has made the concept of lab on a chip a valuable research tool.

Prior studies in the Biofluids Laboratory at Louisiana Tech have used layer-by-layer and in vitro biological assays to study thrombogenesis in a controlled, repeatable, engineered environment. …

Analysis Of The Detection Of Organophosphate Pesticides In Aqueous Solutions Using Polymer-Coated Sh-Saw Devices, Arnold Kweku Mensah-Brown

Dissertations (1934 -)

Organophosphate pesticides (OPs) have been found as contaminants in surface and ground waters, soil, and agricultural products. Because OPs are toxic compounds, rapid detection/monitoring of OPs in groundwater is necessary to allow for real-time remediation. Detection of OPs in water has already been demonstrated using poly(epichlorohydrin) [PECH] and polyurethane as the sensing layers. However, the response times were relatively long, hindering real-time monitoring. In this work, a hybrid organic/inorganic chemically sensitive layer [bisphenol A-hexamethyltrisiloxane (BPA-HMTS)] that shows a high degree of partial selectivity for OPs is synthesized, characterized (in terms of the glass transition temperature, Tg, water stability, …
