Structural Design Using Conditional-Gan Fused With Property Text Information: A Case For Masonry Structures, Arash Teymori Gharah Tapeh
All Dissertations
Structural design, by nature, is a complex process that requires a considerable amount of time, expertise, and knowledge. In such a process, the structural designer must navigate various codal provisions to crystallize a proper and adequate design. As the role of automation continues to shape the domain of structural engineering over the past few decades, a new front leverages artificial intelligence (AI). Currently, AI acts as a "copilot," collaborating to advance workflow speed and accelerate the design process. Among all the different collaborations between humans and AI, GANs (Generative Adversarial Networks) are seen to complement human creativity by automating specific …

Constructing A State: Canals And The Transformation Of The Economy, Politics, And Finance In Nineteenth-Century New York, Youwei Xing
All Dissertations
This dissertation consists of three essays in economic history, unified by a focus on one of America's earliest transportation infrastructures, the canal system, in nineteenth-century New York. Each chapter explores a different aspect of the state's transformation: its economy, politics, and finance, each of which helped construct New York as the Empire State.
The first chapter studies the economic impact of canals on economic modernization from three aspects: sectoral transition, urbanization, and banking development. Contrary to much of the modern literature finds transportation infrastructure leads to decentralization, I find the opposite-evidence of centralization. Specially: (1) canal towns experienced a transition …

To improve understanding of the impact of natural hazards on the U.S. railway system, this project developed a comprehensive, geospatially precise dataset that maps historical hazard events to specific rail segments. The project provides insight into when, where, and how much damage natural hazards have inflicted on rail infrastructure across the country. While a rail-specific hazard database did not previously exist, this research combines data from the Geological Survey (USGS) Flood Events Database, Hydrologic Unit Codes (HUC), the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast zones. …
Genwriter: Reducing Gender Cues In Biographies Through Text Rewriting, Shweta Soundararajan, Sarah Jane Delany
Genwriter: Reducing Gender Cues In Biographies Through Text Rewriting, Shweta Soundararajan, Sarah Jane Delany
Conference papers
Gendered language is the use of words that indicate an individual’s gender. Though useful in certain context, it can reinforce gender stereotypes and introduce bias, particularly in machine learning models used for tasks like occupation classification. When textual content such as biographies contains gender cues, it can influence model predictions, leading to unfair outcomes such as reduced hiring opportunities for women. To address this issue, we propose GenWriter, an approach that integrates Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) with Large Language Models (LLMs) to rewrite biographies in a way that obfuscates gender while preserving semantic content. We evaluate GenWriter by measuring gender bias …

CBAM allows for the fabrication of strong, lightweight composite propellers using short manufacturing lead times. However, one challenge with this technique is that …
An Ant-Colony Approach To Scheduling Charging Sessions Of Electric Vehicle Fleets With Heterogeneous Scheduling Constraints, Derek D. Redmond
An Ant-Colony Approach To Scheduling Charging Sessions Of Electric Vehicle Fleets With Heterogeneous Scheduling Constraints, Derek D. Redmond
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Electric vehicles and electric-vehicle fleets are gaining widespread usage. A major challenge of managing an electric-vehicle fleet is scheduling when the vehicles can charge and when the vehicles can complete their tasks. Finding smart ways to schedule electric-vehicle charging reduces both the cost of charging vehicles and increases the health of the grid and the environment. This best-of-both-worlds outcome is because of the pricing structure that electric utility companies use. When minimizing the cost of charging the vehicles, it is important to consider that vehicle fleets have constraints on when they can charge. Vehicles are usually limited by the tasks …

The Effects Of Effective Stress And Overconsolidation Ratio On The Undrained Shear Strength Of Soil, Gunniga Suwannawong
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
This study investigates the effect of effective stress and overconsolidation ratio (OCR) on normalized undrained shear strength, which represents the soil deformation and soil strength from applied load. Theoretical frameworks indicate that undrained shear strength (Su) is affected by soil parameters such as void ratio and is linked to the soil consolidation condition, stress path, and stress history. Furthermore, Su is functionally related to the OCR. The purpose of these test are to test two hypotheses: 1) that the undrained shear strength conforms with normalized soil engineering properties, this is true if the following equation describes the …

Effects Of Environmental Stressors On Human Tissue-On-A-Chip Platforms, Andie Padilla
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
As space exploration begins to extend beyond low earth orbit, it has become increasingly critical to understand the interaction of the extreme environment of space flight with human systems. While it is known that space-travel induces a vast array of complications to cardiac, neural, musculoskeletal, and immune systems, the mechanisms by which these complications occur are poorly understood. Current research to study the effects of microgravity and radiation are limited to ground simulations, which rarely account for the multifactorial stressors experienced during spaceflight, or long duration studies aboard the International Space Station. Similarly, traditional two-dimensional (2D) models lack the ability …

Seismic Performance Assessment Of Fatigue-Damaged Cantilever Overhead Sign Structures Using Near-Field Ground Motions, Yeasin Ahmed
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Cantilever overhead sign support (COSS) structures are one of the most common features of transportation systems, providing navigational information to motorists. The slender geometry, lightweight design, and welded connection at the base make COSS structure susceptible to fatigue cracking under long term cyclic loading from wind-induced galloping, truck-induced gust pressure and so on. COSS structures are traditionally designed considering nominal wind conditions. However, rising incidents of seismic activity in regions like Dallas-Fort Worth related to industrial injection wells in the Permian Basin have created a serious concern regarding the seismic performance of potentially fatigued-damaged COSS structure. The interaction between already …

Electric power systems have become one of our most critical infrastructures as we've grown dependent on electricity for everyday tasks. Ensuring power systems provide reliable service is a priority that can be affected by disturbance events. A common event is transmission line outages, where a line in the system becomes disconnected due to varying forms of physical damage. If an outage isn't detected in time, other lines in the system may overload, causing cascading failures that leave many customers without power. Therefore, having a power system that can automatically detect outages is crucial for reliability, as it promotes real-time response …

Axicons For Improved Resolution And Depth Of Focus In Adaptive Optics Scanning Light Ophthalmoscopy, Ruth E. Woehlke, Robert F. Cooper
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscopes are instrumental for studying the eye, yet they use truncated Gaussian illumination and are limited by diffraction, restricting resolution and depth of focus (DOF). Non-diffractive Bessel beams have emerged as an alternative. Here, we use two axicons configured as: (1) an extended DOF beam for resolving multiple retinal layers; and (2) an annular beam for increasing lateral resolution. We compare both approaches to truncated Gaussian illumination using a variety of metrics. Using Configuration 1, we successfully observed multiple retinal layers simultaneously. Using Configuration 2, we observed enhanced lateral resolution but decreased signal-to-noise ratio.

Polymer-Enhanced Nanopore Sensing, Eugene Gyasi Agyemang
Polymer-Enhanced Nanopore Sensing, Eugene Gyasi Agyemang
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The resistive pulse technique characterizes single analytes by detecting fluctuations in the ion current as they pass through a narrow orifice connecting two electrolyte-filled chambers, each containing a single electrode. The amplitude, shape, frequency, and duration of these fluctuations primarily provide information about the analyte’s size, shape, concentration, and net surface charge, respectively. One configuration for resistive pulse measurements is of an electrolyte-filled nanopipette immersed in a bath, where the nanopipette tip acts as the nanoscale orifice. It was previously shown that incorporating the large quantities polymer polyethylene glycol (PEG 8K, 50% w/v) into the external electrolyte bath dramatically enhanced …

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship
Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a genetic connective tissue disorder caused by a variant of the fibrillin-1 (FBN1) gene, leading to abnormalities in organs reliant on tissue elasticity. Proximal thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAAs) are a major clinical concern, particularly in pediatric MFS patients, due to their risk of dissection or rupture. Diagnosis and monitoring of TAAs often depend on manual measurements of aortic root diameters from the parasternal long axis views of transthoracic echocardiograms. However, this method is prone to interobserver variability (IOV), which impacts consistency in clinical assessment. To mitigate these limitations, we developed a graphical user interface (GUI) that …
