Electromagnetic Transients Program Interfacing, Enhancement And Comparison With Spice, Siswa Trihadi Dec 1990

Electromagnetic Transients Program Interfacing, Enhancement And Comparison With Spice, Siswa Trihadi

Theses

The Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) is a computer program used to simulate high speed power system transients. The EMTP input data structures and the rules in setting up the input data file are described in this thesis by means of two sample cases i.e an RLC series circuit and a sin le line to ground fault in power system.

The EMTP input data are very detailed an highly-structured column-dependent. To improve the user-friendliness of EMTP by ignoring the difficulty of arranging the column structures, this thesis presents the EM P User Interactive Program. Sample cases using this interactive program are …

A threshold sensitivity study was performed to …

Application Of Influence Diagrams In Identifying Soviet Satellite Missions, Cary C. Chun Dec 1990

Application Of Influence Diagrams In Identifying Soviet Satellite Missions, Cary C. Chun

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the feasibility of applying influence diagrams to capture expert knowledge and incorporate decision theory to construct a Soviet satellite mission prediction model. Before a Soviet launch occurs, formulations of the model's prior probability distribution allows the input of expert knowledge and any available information. As the predictive variables of the model become known, the information is used to successively refine the estimate of the probable mission, thereby, reducing the uncertainty in the model. Discretizing is used to approximate continuous variables as discrete variables which successfully allows the combination of both variable types in a single influence diagram …

Integrated Control Of Thermally Distorted Large Space Antennas, Robert H. Tolson Oct 1990

Integrated Control Of Thermally Distorted Large Space Antennas, Robert H. Tolson

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Studies on controlling the thermal distortion of large space antennae have generally investigated a single orbital position and have optimized actuator locations based on minimizing the RMS surface deviation from the original parabolic shape. One study showed the benefits of directly using far zone electric field characteristics as the performance measure; but, this approach resulted in a nonlinear programming problem. The objective of the current study is to develop an approach to designing a control system that (1) recognizes the time dependence of the distortion and (2) controls variables that are directly related to far field performance in a quadratic …

Hazardous Waste Disposal Site Hydrogeologic Characterization, S. M. Testa Jun 1988

Hazardous Waste Disposal Site Hydrogeologic Characterization, S. M. Testa

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A major hazardous waste disposal facility near Arlington, Oregon serving the Pacific Northwest, Canada, and Alaska maintains numerous favorable environmental characteristics for siting of a hazardous waste disposal facility. The risk of contamination as a result of potential leakage from a waste management unit via primary pathways to surface water, groundwater or by direct contact and/or ingestion is thus reasonably low. However, these same characteristics which make the site most suitable for hazardous waste disposal often conflict with: 1) the demonstration of the groundwater monitoring system's ability to adequately perform immediate leak detection monitoring as mandated under the Resource Conservation …

Grouting A Water Tower Foundation In A Carbonate Formation, Dorairaja Raghu, David Antes, Joseph J. Lifrieri Jun 1988

Grouting A Water Tower Foundation In A Carbonate Formation, Dorairaja Raghu, David Antes, Joseph J. Lifrieri

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Grouting the cavities in cavernous carbonate formations is one of the techniques employed to achieve reliable bearing support for structures founded in and on such rock units. For this purpose, conventional exploration methods, such as test borings and geophysical measurements, can be employed to obtain the necessary subsurface data; but, they are usually limited in extent, expensive, time consuming, and can be misleading. These limitations can be overcome by employing percussion probing techniques. A case history is cited wherein percussion probing was successfully employed.

Geotechnical Characterization Of Subsoil Deposits At Cairo, Mohamed A. El-Sohby, S. Ossama Mazen

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

As a result of considering the historical aspects in Cairo subsoil at different stages of its development, soil deposits in the alluvial plain in Cairo area could be identified and classified on their origin into limited number of major types. Their distribution could be produced on maps on which classes of engineering significance are recognized. The boundaries between map units have been drawn separating areas of equal origin and characteristics. Verification of soil profile from field investigation indicated complete agreement with the previous characterization based on theoretical considerations.

Wind Streamline Ambiguity Removal Of Microwave Scatterometer Data, Hans W. Zaepfel Oct 1986

Wind Streamline Ambiguity Removal Of Microwave Scatterometer Data, Hans W. Zaepfel

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

There is a class of satellite microwave scatterometers that return oceanographic information which includes wind vectors with directional ambiguity. The first part of the ambiguity removal process is to reduce the data to a directional ambiguity of 180°. This thesis shows that wind direction change contains the information required for streamline ambiguity removal and that syntactic pattern recognition techniques can be used to locate the areas of wind direction change. Spreading the information along the areas of wind direction change results in the removal of the streamline ambiguity. The algorithm is implemented and the results are presented showing that it …

Effectiveness Of Traffic Noise Barrier On I 471 In Campbell County, Kentucky, Tom Creasey, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the traffic noise barrier on I 471 in Campbell County, Kentucky. Since the barrier coincided with construction of I 471, it was necessary to predict noise levels that would exist if no barrier were present utilizing the FHWA STAMINA 2.0 computer model. This was compared to actual noise level measurements at the barrier site to determine the barrier insertion loss.

After calibration of the STAMINA 2.0 model, noise measurements were conducted at 39 receiver locations during off-peak and peak traffic conditions. The noise barrier reduced the noise level reaching …
