Decision Analysis With Value-Focused Thinking As A Methodology In Structuring The Civil Engineer Operations Flight, Dee Jay Katzer Mar 2002

Decision Analysis With Value-Focused Thinking As A Methodology In Structuring The Civil Engineer Operations Flight, Dee Jay Katzer

Theses and Dissertations

The civil engineer operations flight organizational structure has been in a state of change since the flight's inception and is currently prescribed only to the element level. Therefore, an operations flight commander must determine the organizational structure best suited for their unique situation without any guidance or support. To provide insight and defensible support for an operations flight commander faced with this decision, a value-focused thinking process was used to create a value model that aids in evaluating possible organizational structures. To ensure that the results of this research are applicable across the Air Force, the value model was created …

Modeling The Pre-Positioning Of Air Force Precision Guided Munitions, Daniel P. Johnstone Mar 2002

Modeling The Pre-Positioning Of Air Force Precision Guided Munitions, Daniel P. Johnstone

Theses and Dissertations

There exist factors that play a major role in an enlisted Airman's decision to either stay on active duty in the Air Force or separate. The current force structure of the U.S. Air Force and increased loss of enlisted personnel is a major concern as we look at maintaining manpower to meet the needs of the Air Force. The Air Force is reacting to this low retention problem by increasing the bonuses for initial enlistments and reenlistments, home basing, increasing quality of life for Air Force personnel with enlisted dormitory plus-ups, and under AEF personnel have increased predictability of deployment. …

In this work goal programming is used to solve a minimum cost multicommodity network flow problem with multiple goals. A single telecommunication network with multiple commodities (e.g., voice, video, data, etc.) flowing over it is analyzed. This network consists of: linear objective function, linear cost arcs, fixed capacities, specific origin-destination pairs for each commodity. A multicommodity network flow problem with goals can be successfully modeled using linear goal programming techniques. When properly modeled, network flow techniques may be employed to exploit the pure network structure of a multicommodity network flow problem with goals. Lagrangian relaxation captures the essence of the …

Cxquery: A Novel Xml Query Language, Peter Revesz, Yi Chen Jan 2002

Cxquery: A Novel Xml Query Language, Peter Revesz, Yi Chen

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

XML is becoming the data exchange standard on the Internet. Previously proposed XML query languages, such as XQuery, Quilt, YALT, Lorel, and XML-QL, lack schema definition of the query result; therefore, they are limited for defining views, integrating data, updating, and further querying, all of which are often needed in e-Business applications. We propose a novel XML query language called CXQuery, which defines the schema of the query results explicitly and can easily define views, and integrate, update, and query XML data. In addition, CXQuery can express spatial and spatio-temporal queries using a constraint-based querying approach.

Discontinuities And Continuities: A New Way To Understand Virtual Work, Mary Beth Watson-Manheim, Kevin Crowston, Katherine M. Chudoba Jan 2002

Discontinuities And Continuities: A New Way To Understand Virtual Work, Mary Beth Watson-Manheim, Kevin Crowston, Katherine M. Chudoba

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

“Virtual” is a potent buzzword, freely applied to many situations, with many meanings. In this exploratory study, we develop a more precise understanding of "virtual" to describe changing work environments. Specifically, we propose a framework to classify work environments based on the type of discontinuities involved. Discontinuities are gaps or a lack of coherence in aspects of work. The framework allows us to compare research across different topics and work settings. We use the framework to classify 75 published articles on virtual work environments or earlier, related research streams. We observed that many studies were simultaneously addressing existing or emerging …

Computing Moments Of A Binary Horizontally/Vertically Convex Image Using Run-Time Reconfiguration, Cheowway Neoh Jan 2002

Computing Moments Of A Binary Horizontally/Vertically Convex Image Using Run-Time Reconfiguration, Cheowway Neoh

LSU Master's Theses

In this thesis, we present a design for computing moments of a binary horizontally/vertically convex image on an FPGA chip, using run-time reconfiguration. We compute the moments of up to third order for a total of 16 moments. We address how run-time reconfiguration speeds up moment computations without taking up huge hardware resources. Since we are considering a binary horizontally/vertically convex image, we look at an alternative method in moment computations that utilizes constant coefficient multipliers. We divide the image into segments and process one segment at a time. We reconfigure the constant coefficient multipliers before processing the next segment. …

High-elevation red spruce [Picea rubens Sarg.]-Fraser fir [Abies fraseri (Pursh.) Poir] forests in the Southern Appalachians currently receive large nitrogen (N) inputs via atmospheric deposition (30 kg N ha(-1) year(-1)) but have limited N retention capacity due to a combination of stand age, heavy fir mortality caused by exotic insect infestations, and numerous gaps caused by windfalls and ice storms. This study examined the magnitude and timing of the N fluxes into, through, and out of a small, first-order catchment in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It also examined the role of climatic conditions in causing interannual variations in …

Transitory Forecasting Methodology: Passenger/Revenue Share And Capacity Share (The S-Curve), Marlene Marie Dugan

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this descriptive study was to explore the relationship between a carrier's service/capacity share and passenger share to determine the presence of the s-curve. The author is unaware of a current, accepted analysis for understanding the s-curve with any degree of reliability. Regression analysis was used to correlate service/capacity share against passenger share for domestic, United States air carriers. Carrier ranking was then added as a predicting variable to gain further insight into the correlation between service share and passenger share. It is anticipated that this study will be beneficial to airline network planners in their analysis of …

Baseflow Separation Based On Storage-Outflow Modelling Of Streamflow Recessions, With Application To Semi- Arid Catchments In Tanzania, S Mwakalila

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Discharge in many rivers is Often fed by baseflow provided by drainage of the saturated zone in the shallow permeable soils. It is becoming clear that the outflow from this saturated zone is not linear proportional to storage as is commonly assumed in many algorithms. The objectives Of this study theretore, are first to explore the extent to which the assumption of linearity in storage-outflow relationships is valid and secondly to introduce an alternative approach to baseflow separation algorithms for estimating direct mnoff time series. Numerical analysis Of streamflow recessions from the semi-arid catchments of the Great Ruaha basin in …

Innovative Financing Options For Kentucky’S Transportation Infrastructure, Merl M. Hackbart Apr 2001

Innovative Financing Options For Kentucky’S Transportation Infrastructure, Merl M. Hackbart

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A strong linkage exists between economic growth and the availability of an adequate and efficient transportation system. Due to its location, geography and economy, this linkage — particularly in regard to highway transportation — is critical to continued economic progress in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. However, Kentucky’s ability to provide the infrastructure investments needed to be competitive in the new “global economy” is constrained by the structure of its funding mechanism, the Road Fund. During the last two decades, Road Fund revenue growth has dramatically lagged the growth of motor vehicle travel. As a consequence, Kentucky faces highway investment needs …

A Compact Ozone Differential Absorption Lidar (Dial) Transmitter Using A Solid-State Dye Polymer, Alton L. Jones Jr. Apr 2001

A Compact Ozone Differential Absorption Lidar (Dial) Transmitter Using A Solid-State Dye Polymer, Alton L. Jones Jr.

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The measurement of atmospheric ozone is important because in the troposphere it is a pollutant that is toxic to living systems, but in the stratosphere ozone protects life by shielding us from the sun's harmful UV-B radiation.

Laser remote sensing from aircraft using differential absorption lidar (DIAL) has become a very important technique for measuring atmospheric ozone at different altitudes and locations. Current aircraft-based DIAL systems use pulsed Nd:YAG pumped liquid dye lasers, which are then frequency doubled into the UV region, to probe both the stratosphere and troposphere for ozone.

This thesis describes a new potential DIAL laser transmitter …
