Performance Evaluation Of Linear Systems Using The Fast Fourier Transform., Larry Leonard Lamano Jan 1975

Performance Evaluation Of Linear Systems Using The Fast Fourier Transform., Larry Leonard Lamano

Masters Theses

"In order for a computer simulation of a communication system to yield useful and meaningful results, a method for determining system performance is often essential. The computer postprocessor, described in this thesis, allows accurate determination of the mean-square-error induced by the system being simulated and the noise power at any point in the system.

Measurements of the mean-square-error induced by a system due to amplitude distortion, phase distortion, and amplitude and phase distortion, along with measurements of the power in a Gaussian noise waveform are performed. The values obtained using simulation are compared to the corresponding theoretical values in order …

Phase Equilibria Near The Solidus Temperature For Iron-Rich Fe-Cu-C Alloys., Kenneth L. Metz Jr. Jan 1975

Phase Equilibria Near The Solidus Temperature For Iron-Rich Fe-Cu-C Alloys., Kenneth L. Metz Jr.

Masters Theses

"The effect of copper on the solidification temperature of graphite-saturated iron-rich alloys was determined with the use of cooling curves. The ternary invariant temperature for the alloy was found to be 1172°c with the use of heating curves. At 1172°c, graphite, austenite, an iron rich liquid, and a copper-rich liquid are in equilibrium. The composition of the metallic phases was determined by weight gain, chemical analysis, and the electron microprobe. In addition, the composition of the iron-rich liquid was calculated from thermodynamic data. Isothermal sections of the iron-rich corner of the system were constructed for several temperatures in the range …

Plastic Relaxation Around Crack Tip In Composite Materials, Chung-Yen Huang Dec 1974

Plastic Relaxation Around Crack Tip In Composite Materials, Chung-Yen Huang

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The concept of continuously distributed dislocations is used to investigate the mechanical behavior of fractured composite materials,

As a first approximation to the complicated physical configuration of a composite material, the current investigation concerns a simp1ified physical model by considering an elastic circular cylindrical inclusion imbedded and located in an infinite elastic medium such that an internal line crack starts from the interface and extends in the radial direction of the inclusion. The plastic zone spreads and extends from the crack tip when the entire system is subjected to a uniformly distributed shear load at infinity. This constitutes an anti-pane …

An Evaluation Of Four Data Reconstruction Techniques Applied To Seismometer Data., Stephen Frank Pickett Dec 1974

An Evaluation Of Four Data Reconstruction Techniques Applied To Seismometer Data., Stephen Frank Pickett

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Four methods of data reconstruction were applied to actual seismometer data with inherent low frequency linear distortion, for relative evaluation and comparison. An electronic system inverse circuit, an impulse invariant Z transform inverse system model, time domain deconvolution, and fast Fourier transforms were the methods used. It was found that from the standpoints of ease of application, computer core and CPU requirements, and reconstruction quality, the electronic inverse circuit and time domain deconvolution would probably be the reconstruction options favored by most seismometer users. Of these two methods, time domain deconvolution exhibited slightly better reconstruction quality than did the inverse …

A Method Of System Identification With Experimental Investigations Of Real Systems, Paul H. Merritt Dec 1974

A Method Of System Identification With Experimental Investigations Of Real Systems, Paul H. Merritt

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The following generalized problem was investigated in this study:

"Given a system that can be described by a vector differential equation of the type,

x = f (x, u, a, t) ,

and given both input data, u~ and output data, x~, determine both the general form of the differential equation, f~ (.,.,.,.), and the unknown parameters, a~."

This study describes a method of identifying the parameters, a~, and the form, f~, of the above equation. Initially, the form of the equation must be hypothesized to determine the unknown parameters; …

Multiple Uses Of Utah Irrigation Canals: Cache County As A Case Study, James J. Kennedy, Komain Unhanand Dec 1974

Multiple Uses Of Utah Irrigation Canals: Cache County As A Case Study, James J. Kennedy, Komain Unhanand

Reports

Irrigation use is an obvious benefit of Utah canals that has been recognized for over 100 years. This study attempts to illustrate other, less obvious, uses. the major use examined was recreational, but canals are presently functioning as storm drainage systems and have potential for diverting flood crests in many river systems.

Recreational use of canals falls into two categories. There is passive use such as its landscape values, affects on creating shade and bird-wildlife habitat, etc., that is difficult to quantify but no less important than active canal use such as tubing, hiking, bank-play, bicycling, etc. We selected several …

Stability And Synthesis Of Two Dimensional Digital Recursive Filters, Winser Edward Alexander Sep 1974

Stability And Synthesis Of Two Dimensional Digital Recursive Filters, Winser Edward Alexander

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This dissertation presents an analytical investigation of the requirements for stability of two dimensional digital recursive filters and the development of a new procedure which can be used to synthesize low pass digital recursive filters with approximately circularly symmetric squared magnitude characteristics.

A new approach to stability analysis of two dimensional digital recursive filters is presented. A matrix recursive equation corresponding to the recursive algorithm for the two dimensional digital recursive filter is defined. This matrix recursive equation is used to formulate necessary conditions for stability of the two dimensional digital recursive filter in terms of the magnitudes of the …

Transient Response Of Visoplastic And Viscoelastic Shells Submersed In Fluid Media, Thomas A. Duffey Jr. Sep 1974

Transient Response Of Visoplastic And Viscoelastic Shells Submersed In Fluid Media, Thomas A. Duffey Jr.

Civil Engineering ETDs

The transient fluid-shell interaction problem is investigated for thin shells constructed of other than linearly elastic materials. Specifically, solutions are developed in terms of elementary functions for the transient responses of impulsively loaded, fluid-surrounded spherical shells constructed of either viscoplastic or viscoelastic materials. In all cases the fluid medium surrounding the shell is taken as inviscid and compressible and only spherically symmetric shell motions and radiation of sound into the surrounding medium are considered. For the viscoplastic (strain rate sensitive) shells considered, two separate elastic-plastic solutions are presented. The first is based upon a shell material exhibiting linear strain hardening …

An Automatic Rinse Tank Controller For Industrial Applications, Aliasghar Emami Jul 1974

An Automatic Rinse Tank Controller For Industrial Applications, Aliasghar Emami

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis describes an automatic Rinse Tank Control System used in detection and removal of contaminating agents from industrial plating rinse tanks. It automatically monitors the purity of the rinse water in sixteen separate rinse tanks, and permits fresh water to enter the tanks only when the conductivity of the rinse water in each tank exceeds a predetermined level. Its use will result in large savings in consumption of fresh water and the subsequent reduction in discharge of effluent to the treatment plants.

Analytical State Assignment For Synchronous Sequential Machines., Min-Hung Chao

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

An algorithm is proposed that solves the internal state assignment, input state assignment, and output circuit simplification problems of synchronous sequential machines. With few modifications, it can be applied to machines using various type of memory elements and is capable of solving the state assignment problems of large sequential machines.

The algorithm is first presented in a form for use on machines realized with D-type flip-flops; it is then generalized so that it can be applied to machines using trigger, S-R, or J-K flip-flops directly.

The features of merit in a state table that could be used to obtain internal …

Design Of I-Shaped Beams And Columns With Diaphragm Bracing, S. J. Errera, T. V. S. R. Apparao Jul 1974

Design Of I-Shaped Beams And Columns With Diaphragm Bracing, S. J. Errera, T. V. S. R. Apparao

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

Cold-formed steel panels often are used as wall sheathing, roof decking or floor decking in steel framed buildings or pre-engineered metal buildings. Diaphragms formed by interconnecting these panels have considerable in-plane shear resistance, and can be utilized as bracing against buckling for individual members of a steel frame. For wall columns the diaphragm may be either directly attached or connected to girts which in turn are connected to the columns. A procedure is presented for the design of I-section beams and columns with diaphragm or diaphragm-girt bracing. The procedure is based on the ultimate load capacity of fully braced members, …

A Biquadratic Realization Using A Distributed-Lumped-Active Rc Network., James Lee Jorgensen Jul 1974

A Biquadratic Realization Using A Distributed-Lumped-Active Rc Network., James Lee Jorgensen

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A common method used to realize high-order active filters is to cascade second-order (biquadratic) and first-order filter sections, to achieve the desired voltage transfer function. First-order sections are easily realized by simple passive sections; the basic building block in this method is, therefore, a network that realizes a general biquadratic voltage transfer function (BVTF).

Industrialized-Subsidized Housing In The Hackensack Meadowlands, Andrew Carl Gildersleeve Jun 1974

Industrialized-Subsidized Housing In The Hackensack Meadowlands, Andrew Carl Gildersleeve

Theses

New Jersey as well as the rest of the nation is beginning to feel the pinch of what has been termed the housing crisis. The products of the World War II baby-boom are now reaching the age where they require homes of their own, making the demand for good quality low-cost housing very high. At the same time, the demand for good public housing continues to grow and we are learning that our previous efforts in this field have been far from satisfactory.

In the course of this study I have looked into the possibilities of solving a portion of …

The Digital Multifunction Power Measuring System, Ralph Warren Shoemaker May 1974

The Digital Multifunction Power Measuring System, Ralph Warren Shoemaker

Dissertations and Theses

The Digital Multifunction Power Measuring System is the outgrowth of a project involving the design of a prototype precision Digital Watt Transducer for the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA). A prototype Digital Watt Transducer was built and tested since no other device of the desired accuracy was commercially available. Upon partial completion of the project, another Watt Transducer did become available which was essentially identical to our development. Since we could not economically compete with the manufacturer of these Watt Transducers, our project was stopped. Over a period of several months we thought about other ways to apply the experience gained …

An Optimal Tracking System For Numerically Controlled Machine Tools, Stephen H. Neff May 1974

An Optimal Tracking System For Numerically Controlled Machine Tools, Stephen H. Neff

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Conventional numerically controlled machine tools use straight line approximations for machining contoured surfaces or outlines. This thesis uses modern control theory to develop an optimal tracking system which will follow any surface defined by a second degree polynomial without resort to straight line approximation. To develop the optimal tracking system, the mathematical expressions required to define the dynamics of a two axis machine tool following a parabolic path are formulated. Next, the third order differential equation representing the slide, driven by a hydraulic motor which is controlled by an electrohydraulic servovalve, is changed into a first order matrix differential equation, …

The U. S. Wind Power Program, Joseph M. Savino Apr 1974

The U. S. Wind Power Program, Joseph M. Savino

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Today I would like to talk about wind energy in, basically, two parts. I would like to bring to your attention some of the developments that have occurred in the 20th century. Many of us who have gone through school in the last 25-30 years don't recall anywhere in our engineering education much information dealing with wind energy, and that may come as a surprise to you as it did to me, to learn how much has actually been done in the 20th century to develop large scale wind-driven machines. After I get through with that introduction I would like …

The Energy Problem -- Crude Oil, J. A. Marshall Apr 1974

The Energy Problem -- Crude Oil, J. A. Marshall

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

This paper discusses the national energy problem as it affects the demand for and availability of crude oil. Forecasts of energy demands to 1990 have been made based on population trends and changing life styles in the USA. Projections of energy supplies show a rapidly increasing gap between supply of crude oil and demand for crude oil from the early 1970's through 1990. The need for imported crude oil to supply the forecast deficit is discussed. The political and economic implications of these imports are also discussed. The need for refineries, port facilities, tankers, and pipelines are presented. Finally, recommendations …

Coal Gasification And Liquefaction, Sam Friedman Apr 1974

Coal Gasification And Liquefaction, Sam Friedman

The current major processes being developed for coal gasification and liquefaction will be reviewed briefly. The Bureau of Mines Hydrane process for converting coal to pipeline quality gas directly by reaction with hydrogen will be discussed in more detail. The featured topic will be the Bureau's Synthoil process which converts coal in one step into a low-sulfur, low-ash fuel oil. Coal suspended in recycled oil is propelled through a packed-bed reactor by rapid turbulent flow of hydrogen. A 1/2 TPD plant is in operation producing over 1 bbl of oil per day.

Coal And Its Derivatives As An Energy Resource, W. G. Stockton Apr 1974

Coal And Its Derivatives As An Energy Resource, W. G. Stockton

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

April 25, 1974

Events of the last few months, it seems, have somewhat altered the public countenance of the coal industry. These events, I am sure, are the generating factors focusing interest on our industry currently, and I suspect they account for my invitation to address this distinguished group of engineering students today on the subject of coal in this nation's energy outlook.

Coal Mining is not a new industry - - it has been around a long, long time. A surprising number of people, though, have never seen any coal; they are not aware of the existence of the …

Status And Outlook For Energy Conversion Via Fuel Cells, John P. Ackerman Apr 1974

Status And Outlook For Energy Conversion Via Fuel Cells, John P. Ackerman

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Fuel cells have the potential of providing good solutions to a variety of energy-related problems. As our supplies of conventional fossil fuels are depleted, their cost will rise, and there will be increasing difficulty in obtaining certain premium fuels at any price. It behooves us, then, to use our remaining reserves of fuels as efficiently as possible. Energy conversion via fuel cells represents one of the best ways to achieve this goal, because it is possible, simultaneously, to obtain more work and less pollution from a dollar's worth of fuel with a fuel cell than with any other device.
