Increasing Awareness About Post-Secondary Education In First-Generation Students, Ashley N. Hernandez Apr 2025

Increasing Awareness About Post-Secondary Education In First-Generation Students, Ashley N. Hernandez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

First-generation high school students may be unaware of the different post-secondary opportunities available to them and how to pay for them. When these students do not know the different post-secondary options available to them, they may decide that post-secondary education is unachievable or not made for them. First-generation, high school students who learn about different opportunities available may feel motivated to continue their education and find new opportunities they recognize that could positively impact their future. Therefore, I have created a two-day workshop for first-generation high school students from North Monterey County High School in Castroville, California.

Language And The Law: The Nature Of Law And Statutory Interpretation, Caleb W. Noble Apr 2025

Language And The Law: The Nature Of Law And Statutory Interpretation, Caleb W. Noble

Senior Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is twofold. First, it will demonstrate that law is both letter and spirit and that the letter and spirit should be balanced in interpretation. This thesis also seeks to define the spirit and letter of the law and their various components. The spirit is the metaphysical essence that embodies law and is made of intent, purpose, principle, and natural law. The letter is the substance of law and is made of promulgated commands, text, and language. Therefore, as law is both letter and spirit, these two must be balanced in interpretation. The nature of interpretation …

Dialogic Foundations Of The “4-Trans” Framework: Towards A Comprehensive And Dynamic Understanding Of Multilingual Teacher Education, David Martinez-Prieto, Sandra I. Musanti, Xiaodi Zhou

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

In this article, we develop the “4-trans” framework by reflecting on the way current multilingual teacher preparation scholarship has addressed translanguaging, transnationalism, transculturality, and transdisciplinarity either in compartmentalized or integrative manners. While current literature has addressed some “trans” intersections, we propose the enunciation of the “4-trans” as permeable and complementary principles in multilingual education that can serve to better examine the experiences and challenges of multilingual pre-service teachers. To amalgamate the “4-trans” to examine the development of multilingual pre-service teachers, this article describes the construction of a multidimensional framework based on a dialogic conception of social …

Synthesis Of Organosilicon Substituted Fₓpczn For The Preparation Of Silica-Based Photo-Catalysts, Reagan E. Daly Apr 2025

Synthesis Of Organosilicon Substituted Fₓpczn For The Preparation Of Silica-Based Photo-Catalysts, Reagan E. Daly

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This study began with the synthesis, purification, and catalytic application of hexadeca fluoro phthalocyanine zinc (F₁₆PcZn) derivatives functionalized with organosilane consuming thiol groups. The F₁₆PcZn was synthesized by reacting tetrafluorophthalonitrile (TFPN) with zinc acetate (Zn(OAc)₂) in 1-chloronaphthalene as a solvent, under a controlled heating process at 185°C for 90 minutes. The resulting blue solid was purified via vacuum filtration and recrystallization techniques to remove residual solvents and by-products, yielding pure F₁₆PcZn. The purity of the product was assessed through UV-Vis spectroscopy, MALDI analysis, and a molar extinction coefficient was determined.

Subsequent nucleophilic substitution of the fluorine atoms on F₁₆PcZn with …

Engineering broadly neutralizing monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) targeting the hemagglutinin (HA) of Influenza A virus (IAV) is a promising approach for intervention of seasonal flu. However, HA plasticity often leads to resistant strains that compromise mAb potency as bivalent IgGs. Here we hypothesize that multimerization of anti-IAV antibodies as IgMs can enhance coverage and neutralization potency. Here, we construct 18 IgM antibodies from known broadly neutralizing IgGs targeting different IAV HA epitopes and evaluate their breadth and potency of neutralization against distinct H1N1 and H3N2 IAVs. The IgM version of receptor binding site-specific IgG F045-092 shows increased breadth and antiviral potency …

Overcoming Barriers To Human Papillomavirus Vaccination In Guangdong Province, China, Shuaijing Zhang, Shiqi Li, Jingtai Ma, Guiyuan Ji, Zhifeng Li, Siyi Chen, Fenglin Zhang, Xingfen Yang, Jianpeng Xiao, Rong Cao, Chenggang Wu, Wei Wu

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection remains a critical public health challenge in China, particularly in Guangdong Province, where HPV-52, 16, and 58 genotypes predominate, and male infection rates exceed 40%. Despite the successful implementation of a government-funded school-based program that has achieved 88% HPV vaccine coverage among adolescent girls, several persistent barriers, including genotype mismatch (the free HPV vaccine covers < 50% of high-risk local strains), regional disparities (80% vs. 60% for first-dose coverage), and exclusion of males, thwart progress toward herd immunity. Financial sustainability risks pose an even more significant threat to the expansion of HPV vaccination programs, especially in Guangdong province where annual expenditures exceed CNY 200 million. This review delves into Guangdong's pioneering efforts and proposes practical solutions: accelerating domestic multivalent HPV vaccine development, adopting gender-neutral vaccination policies, and leveraging mobile clinics for remote populations. These strategies not only provide a roadmap for China but also serve as valuable insight for other LMICs striving to overcome HPV-related inequalities.

Media Quiteracy: Why Digital Disconnection Belongs In The Media Literacy Curriculum, Katie Day Good Apr 2025

Media Quiteracy: Why Digital Disconnection Belongs In The Media Literacy Curriculum, Katie Day Good

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

In this essay, we introduce media quiteracy, which we use to conceptualize and describe the valuable learning that can happen through the refusal to take up new media or the act of pausing or ceasing its use. We see media quiteracy as an active and generative approach to learning and argue for its inclusion in the media literacy curriculum. We trace the history of critical engagement with technologies within education and then articulate what media quiteracy can look like in practice. We surface and discuss three potential obstacles to teaching media quiteracy, which include the ways in which it problematizes …

Deportations And Latino Segregation: The Residential Impacts Of Interior Immigration Enforcement, Matthew Hall, Jacob S. Rugh, Hao Liang Apr 2025

Deportations And Latino Segregation: The Residential Impacts Of Interior Immigration Enforcement, Matthew Hall, Jacob S. Rugh, Hao Liang

Faculty Publications

The shift of immigration enforcement to local jurisdictions has intensified localized patterns of anti-immigrant sentiment, enabling the system of mass deportation to expand at an unprecedented scale. This study examines the effects of 287 (g) agreements, which empower local law enforcement to enforce immigration laws, on Latino residential segregation. Using a quasi-experimental design that compares counties implementing 287 (g) with those that applied but did not implement, we find that these policies significantly slowed declines in Hispanic-white segregation, particularly in early-adopting Southern counties where enforcement was most aggressive. We find no evidence that the program altered patterns of segregation for …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background: Approximately 20% of all transient ischaemic attacks (TIAs) and ischaemic strokes occur within the posterior circulation, with vertebrobasilar stenosis identified as the cause in roughly 25% of the cases. Studies have shown that about a quarter of these patients have atherosclerotic stenosis of at least 50% of the vertebrobasilar artery. Stenosis has been shown to be associated with an increased risk of 90-day recurrent vertebrobasilar stroke, particularly in the first few weeks, which is significantly higher when compared with patients with stenosis of the anterior circulation. Therefore, aggressive treatment is important for the patient's prognosis. Stenting is emerging as …

The cerebellar ventricular zone (VZ) is the primary source of progenitors that generate cerebellar GABAergic neurons, including Purkinje cells (PCs) and interneurons (INs). This study provides detailed characterization of human cerebellar GABAergic neurogenesis using transcriptomic and histopathological analyses and reveals conserved and unique features compared to rodents. We show that the sequential progression of neurogenesis is conserved and occurs before 8 postconception weeks. Notably, PC differentiation occurs in the outer subventricular zone (SVZ), a region absent in the mouse cerebellum. Human PCs are generated during a compact two-week period before the onset of cerebral cortex histogenesis. A subset of human …

Human Rights Concern In International Investment Law: A Study Of Indian International Investment Agreements, Varun Chhachhar, Monika Negi, Prashant Singh, Niharika Kumar

Indonesian Journal of International Law

The interaction of human rights and investment protection obligations in international investment law is on the rise. Human rights have been cited in claims and defenses of the parties and in the reasoning of the tribunals. Since majority of international investment agreements lack clarity and do not express the use of the term ‘human rights’, experts question the legitimacy of such usage. Given the alleged backlash and ongoing reforms in international investment law, the lack of human rights concern in international investment law needs proper investigation. This paper investigates the issue in the Indian context. After the adoption of its …

Cuju: The Ancient Chinese Game That Held An Empire Together, Enzo H. Smith Apr 2025

Cuju: The Ancient Chinese Game That Held An Empire Together, Enzo H. Smith

Young Historians Conference

This paper explores how cuju, an ancient sport known as the predecessor of modern football, evolved from the Han to Song dynasties (206 BCE–1368 CE) as a unifying force in imperial China. Calling upon primary sources such as ancient cuju manuals and various art pieces suggests this sport's importance went beyond a leisurely practice. Using academic journals about Chinese history and the development of cuju from different academic fields and, most notably, the FIFA museum’s online exhibit of cuju, the reason cuju had such a strong place of value in Chinese society was apparent. Beginning as a combat exercise in …

A Crucial Western Foothold: Uyghur-Americans In The Fairfax-D.C. Metro Area, Jake C. Mccauley

Young Historians Conference

Since the 1980s, the Uyghur people of East Turkestan, now known as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, have migrated from their ancestral homeland in China in search of a better life. As an ethnically, linguistically, and religiously distinct group, the Uyghurs face severe oppression, with the Chinese state targeting them economically, socially, and physically. Since 2017, mass internment efforts have escalated, leading to the establishment of labor camps that claim to transition Uyghur labor from agricultural to industrial sectors but also serve as sites of ideological indoctrination, torture, and death. As a result of these human rights violations and other …

A Revolutionary Curtain Call: Yiddish Theatre, The Jewish Enlightenment, And The Russian Revolution, Sidonie James

Young Historians Conference

This paper explores the impact of Yiddish Theatre in Moscow and broader Russia in the era of the Russian Revolution as a Jewish cultural and political force. The intersection of the Russian Revolution and the Jewish Haskalah reformation created the space for Yiddish theatre, a cultural movement combining Jewish identity with revolutionary ideals, to thrive. Yiddish theatre became a space for community discourse and political critique during Stalin’s rule, preserving Russian-Jewish cultural identity amid growing Soviet hostility. By examining the Russian Jewish community and its relationship to Russian government and society through the lens of Yiddish theatre, this paper reveals …
