The Thermal Conductivity Of Refractories, Boyd Dudley Jr. Jan 1915

The Thermal Conductivity Of Refractories, Boyd Dudley Jr.

Professional Degree Theses

"The usefulness of correct data in regard to the thermal conductivity of refractories and other materials used in the construction of metallurgical and industrial furnaces is quite generally recognized. Numerous investigations of this property of refractories have been conducted, and in many cases the published data of different investigators are somewhat conflicting. This is particularly true of figures pertaining to materials intended for use at high temperatures, and it is with such materials that the metallurgist is mot interested. The difficulties in the way of precise determinations of thermal conductivities at elevated temperatures are numerous, and it is not particularly …

A Test To Determine The Operating Efficiency Of A Steam Driven Electric Power Plant, Walter H. Rosemeyer, Edward Walter Kane Jun 1913

A Test To Determine The Operating Efficiency Of A Steam Driven Electric Power Plant, Walter H. Rosemeyer, Edward Walter Kane

Bachelors’ Theses

In this test it was desired to determine the amount of water evaporated per pound of coal, and the pounds of steam consumed by main engine per kilowatt-hour output. Because of the existing conditions the test was run on only one boiler but on account of the similiarity of construction the results on the other boilers were assumed to be practically the same. The coal used was Hocking Valley Screenings, abituminous coal, which, from tests conducted by the engineer to determine the fuel best suited to the conditions of the plant, was found to give the most economical results. Since …

The Measurement Of Compressed Air And Its Consumption In Rock Drills, Homer Kent Sherry, William Porri Jan 1912

The Measurement Of Compressed Air And Its Consumption In Rock Drills, Homer Kent Sherry, William Porri

Bachelors Theses

"The object of this thesis is to investigate the measurement of compressed air and to determine its consumption in rock drills. Our intention at first was to run more exhaustive tests on the drills, but due to the large amount of work necessary in rigging up the apparatus and computing results, we found it necessary to curtail our work to representative types of the hammer and the piston machines. We regret being unable to give more complete data in regard to the drills, but hope to point out fields for future work since, with the increased facilities now at hand, …

A Comparison Of The Silver Losses Due To Cupellation Using Different Kinds Of Cupels, Martin Harmon Thornberry

Bachelors Theses

"In this Thesis my object has been to ascertain the silver losses in cupellation with different kinds of cupel material, thereby determining the effeciency sic of the materials in the four kinds of cupels used. When I began the work I though the losses would be about equal in all cupels, but was surprised to find such a great difference. I refer the reader to the curves to see what really happened"--page i.

Efficiency Of The Missouri School Of Mines Power Plant And Cost Of Operation, Cairy C. Conover, John Richardson Kenney, Louie Lincoln Coover Jan 1912

Efficiency Of The Missouri School Of Mines Power Plant And Cost Of Operation, Cairy C. Conover, John Richardson Kenney, Louie Lincoln Coover

Bachelors Theses

"These tests were made for the purpose of getting the efficiency of the electric power plant as it was being run and the cost of operating it. Tests were first made on the boilers separately. The load at the time of the test was too heavy for one boiler and too light for tow, part of the steam being used for heating the buildings and for the air-compressor. This made it so that no combined test of the boilers and generating couple could be made until the warm weather came and the laboratories using compressed air were closed, which was …

The Determination Of The Electrical Resistance Of The Human Body Under Conditions To Be Met Within Underground Mining, Duncan S. Smith, Paul E. Coaske Jan 1911

The Determination Of The Electrical Resistance Of The Human Body Under Conditions To Be Met Within Underground Mining, Duncan S. Smith, Paul E. Coaske

Bachelors Theses

"The use of electric wires in mines for power purposes is dangerous to human life. Deaths occur every year from electric shocks, and in most cases these accidents could have been prevented if some precaution had been taken by the victims, or if some care had been taken to protect them from coming in contact with live wires. Most workingmen accustomed to working around electric wires become careless and a lack of knowledge of the danger involved gives rise to the many accidents that occur each year...The object of this investigation is to determine just what resistance the human body …

Energy Loss In Commercial Condensers, Walter Roland Allen May 1910

Energy Loss In Commercial Condensers, Walter Roland Allen

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The investigation of the energy loss in condensers is one which electricians and experimenters have long carried on. Their efforts have been restricted chiefly to alternating currents. Many methods have been proposed and used with varying success. The losses in condensers are due to dielectric hysteresis and leakage. That the dielectric of a condenser becomes heated when an alternating current is applied to terminals has long been known. A condenser which has been charged does not lose its entire charge when it is discharged, part of it remaining as a residual charge. Kleiner used the thermo-couple embedded in the dielectric …

Laboratory Methods For Copper-Nickel Ores, Walter Irving Phillips Jan 1910

Laboratory Methods For Copper-Nickel Ores, Walter Irving Phillips

Professional Degree Theses

"The Sudbury nickel field, situated in the Province of Ontario, Canada, near the northern shore of Lake Huron, was practically discovered when building the Canadian Pacific Railway. The method of deposit is unusual in that it is not a vein filling but a true igneous deposition. The magma carried besides rock making constituents three principle sulphides, viz. - those of iron as pyrrhotite; of copper as chalcopyrite; and of nickel as pentlandite. These three sulphides, being heavier than the rock matter, and, favored by the slow rate of cooling of the magma, had sufficient time to settle into the lowest …
