Engineering For The Human Environment, Frank E. Moss Jan 1967

Engineering For The Human Environment, Frank E. Moss

Reports

President's Introduction: The environment of man has been the subject of intensive studies in recent years as the dangers of pollution became increasingly evident. The atmostphere we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, all are endangered by defilement. Thre resolution of the conflict can came only through a asystematic reordering of the national way of life so that man himself will not fall victim to the wastes of his civilization. For forty years Utah State University has been vitally concerned with the problems of pollution. Utah State surveys and studies have revealed the effects of pollutants on …

Reports

Summary: Groundwater development frequently provides a means whereby tremendous new economic opportunities are opened up. If supplies are overdrawn (mined) the ensuing regional economy may be able to affort replacements from more costly sources. In the United States the Salt River Valley of Arizona and the valleys of California provide examples. Two cases are treated in this paper, Israel and West Pakistan. In Israel, besides furnishing more than half of the basic source of water suppply, groundwater development provides opportunity for both quantity and quality management, which makes possible use of surface supplies and reclaimed sewage as firm rather than …

Diffusion Coefficients In Alcohol - Water, Frank Gustav Meier Jun 1966

Diffusion Coefficients In Alcohol - Water, Frank Gustav Meier

Theses

Diffusion coefficients of potassium, calcium and magnesium ions in ethanol-water solutions have been determined at 20°C. by means of Dowex 50W-X8 under experimental conditions that indicate that the transfer rate is controlled by film diffusion.

This investigation presents, for the first time, diffusion coefficients for these ions in ethanol solutions at concentrations below 0.01N.

The combined effect of viscosity and dielectric Constant of the solvent on the diffusion coefficient of Ions is demonstrated.

As a step in this direction, one aim of this investigation was an attempt to determine whether grease additives are sorbed on the thickener surface, or are dissolved in the oil phase, or if a combination of these effects prevails. Exploratory sorption and extraction experiments were run by Tu using greases thickened with lithium hydroxystearate and Baragel and using only one concentration of additive. More detailed studies …

The Electrochemical Oxidation Of Cholesteryl Acetate Dibromide, Abraham Cooper Jun 1965

The Electrochemical Oxidation Of Cholesteryl Acetate Dibromide, Abraham Cooper

Dissertations

Cholesteryl Acetate Dibromide was dissolved in carbon tetrachloride, suspended with mixing in 4.5 molar solution of sulfuric acid and electrolyzed at a lead dioxide anode. The anodically prepared film of lead dioxide, when maintained at potentials (relative to a calomel electrode) above 1.5 volts, was a catalyst for the oxidation. A new and mild oxidation took place at the catalytic electrode surface that resulted in attack on the tertiary hydrogen atom at the 25 carbon. The mildness of the oxidation prevented the decomposition of the unconverted raw material and permitted the recovery of up to 96% of the cholesteryl acetate …
