Quadtree-Based Processing Of Digital Images, Ramin Naderi Jan 1986

Quadtree-Based Processing Of Digital Images, Ramin Naderi

Dissertations and Theses

Image representation plays an important role in image processing applications, which usually. contain a huge amount of data. An image is a two-dimensional array of points, and each point contains information (eg: color). A 1024 by 1024 pixel image occupies 1 mega byte of space in the main memory. In actual circumstances 2 to 3 mega bytes of space are needed to facilitate the various image processing tasks. Large amounts of secondary memory are also required to hold various data sets.

In this thesis, two different operations on the quadtree are presented.

There are, in general, two types of data …

Direct Digital Control Of A Liquid Level/Temperature Control Unit, Pedro J. Claudio Jan 1986

Direct Digital Control Of A Liquid Level/Temperature Control Unit, Pedro J. Claudio

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A direct digital control algorithm was implemented on a liquid level and temperature control unit. Two control schemes were implemented on the system and the results were compared against a fourth order Runge-Kutta solution.

Both control schemes involved proportional feedback with dynamic adjustment of the operating point. It was found that the control scheme that contained a feedforward component which dealt with the inlet water temperature had a superior dynamic response to setpoint changes. Steady state offsets in both control schemes were attributable to model parameter estimation errors. Differences between the actual and predicted system dynamic response were also attributable …

Editor Design In The Context Of Control System Simulation, Leon Fadden Jan 1986

Editor Design In The Context Of Control System Simulation, Leon Fadden

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Advances in microcomputer display devices and support software during the past decade have made the microcomputer an increasingly popular vehicle for technical education. This is especially apparent in the area of simulation. The pedagog can provide the student of control theory not merely with the block diagrams and differential algebra but with high resolution color graphic animations supported by mathematical models whose parameters are easily changed by some editor facility. This mode of control system design and behavior study is both faster and more enjoyable for the student, providing greater continuity, concentration, and learning efficiency.

This paper describes the simulation …

Water Desalination Using Nocturnal Radiation Cooling, Ali Mufarreh Saleh Al-Amri

Masters Theses

"In this investigation nocturnal radiation condensation cooling is considered to determine the possibility of using this method as a desalination process in remote areas, villages and resorts, etc. An experimental study was made and programs were developed to calculate water collection under ideal conditions. Both experimental and theoretical work indicated that this process is useful for small scale water production where there is no available energy sources. It can be used also in conjunction with solar desalination processes. Cost analysis and a preliminary design are included"--Abstract, page ii.

Selection Of Remedial Engineering Techniques For Dioxin-Contaminated Soil Sites ; Based On Site Geological Characteristics, Jeffrey John Lux Jan 1986

Selection Of Remedial Engineering Techniques For Dioxin-Contaminated Soil Sites ; Based On Site Geological Characteristics, Jeffrey John Lux

Masters Theses

"Specific geologic, hydrologic, and topographic characteristics influence the selection of technologies employed in the remediation of sites affected by dioxin-contaminated soil. These characteristics are significant in the selection of equipment and methods for excavation and materials processing.

The only currently sociologically acceptable method of treatment of dioxin-contaminated soils is incineration. As more is learned concerning the nature of dioxin sorption to soil particles and the mobility of dioxin in the environment, long-term storage in underground mines, and land burial appear to offer strong potential alternatives. Strong public sentiment against non-destructive remedial options would have to be overcome. There are also …

Effect Of Deferoxamine On Late Deaths Following Cpr In Rats, Charles F. Babbs, Sushil D. Kompala, Karl E. Blaho Jan 1986

Effect Of Deferoxamine On Late Deaths Following Cpr In Rats, Charles F. Babbs, Sushil D. Kompala, Karl E. Blaho

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The iron chelating agent deferoxamine was studied in an animal model as post-resuscitation therapy to prevent late deaths and brain damage following total circulatory arrest and resuscitation. Cardio-respiratory arrest was induced by injection of cold, 1% KC1 into the left ventricles of ketamine anesthetized rats pretreated with succinylcholine chloride, and by discontinuation of positive pressure ventilation. CPR was begun after six minutes, and animals with return of spontaneous circulation were entered into the study. Within five minutes after return of spontaneous circulation, treated animals received deferoxamine (50 mg/kg, IV). At ten days, 16 of 25 (64%) of treated animals had …

Relationship Between Pulse-Wave Velocity And Arterial Elasticity, F J. Callaghan, L A. Geddes, Charles F. Babbs, J D. Bourland Jan 1986

Relationship Between Pulse-Wave Velocity And Arterial Elasticity, F J. Callaghan, L A. Geddes, Charles F. Babbs, J D. Bourland

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Pulse wave velocity (PWV) was measured in situ in 11 isolated canine common carotid arteries. Seven arteries exhibited a linear PWV vs. pressure function at pressures ranging from 0 to 200 mmHg. Four arteries yielded a linear relationship between PWV and pressure between 1 and 100 mmHg; for these vessels the relationship was nonlinear at higher pressures. Seven arteries (five from the group which was linear up to 200 mmHg and two from the group which was linear up to 100 mmHg) were excised and pressure/volume measurements were made in vivo. Using pressure/volume data, the Moens-Korteweg equation was evaluated as …

The Effect Of Carbon Dioxide, Lidoflazine, And Deferoxamine Upon Long Term Survival Following Cardiorespiratory Arrest In Rats, Stephen F. Badylak, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

This study examined the effect of carbon dioxide, lidoflazine, and deferoxamine therapy upon the 10-day survival incidence and subsequent neurologic function of rats subjected to 7 min of cardiorespiratory arrest with resuscitation. Cardiac arrest (asystole) was induced at time zero by injection of cold, 1% KCl into the left ventricle of ketamine-anesthetized rats pretreated with succinylcholine. Positive pressure ventilation was discontinued at time zero. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was begun at 7 min, and animals with return of spontaneous circulation were entered into the study. Twenty treated rats were ventilated for 1 h with 7% carbon dioxide-93% oxygen and given lidoflazine …

Abdominal Binding And Counterpulsation In Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Charles F. Babbs, William E. Blevins Jan 1986

Abdominal Binding And Counterpulsation In Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Charles F. Babbs, William E. Blevins

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The history and potential of abdominal pressure as an adjunct to standard cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is reviewed. Abdominal pressure during CPR may be either static or phasic. Static abdominal pressure redirects limited blood flow generated by chest compressions toward the heart and brain, and away from the abdominal organs and lower extremities, thus boosting coronary perfusion pressure. Phasic abdominal pressure applied whenever chest pressure is released, in counterpoint to the rhythm of chest compression—so called interposed abdominal compression (IAC)-CPR—generates blood flow by an independent abdominal pump mechanism that augments the systemic perfusion created by chest compressions. New imaging data are …

Determination Of Trace Quantities Of Selenium And Arsenic In Canned Tuna Fish Using Electroanalytical Techniques, Ann Marie Higham Dec 1985

Determination Of Trace Quantities Of Selenium And Arsenic In Canned Tuna Fish Using Electroanalytical Techniques, Ann Marie Higham

Theses

Toxic metals are present in the environment and are known to be present in food. Selenium, which is considered an essential micronutrient, is recognized as a toxic metal at slightly higher concentrations. Arsenic is also recognized as a toxic metal. Selenium and Arsenic tend to accumulate in food, specifically fish and seafood.

Fifteen brands and types of tuna fish were analyzed for selenium using differential pulse cathodic stripping voltammetry. The cans with the high and low concentrations of selenium were analyzed for arsenic using differential pulse polarography. Three samples with three percent recoveries and a blank were analyzed for each …

A Study Of Parameters Indicating Microbial Activity In Mixed Aerobic Cultures, William Smith Sep 1985

A Study Of Parameters Indicating Microbial Activity In Mixed Aerobic Cultures, William Smith

Theses

Mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS), oxygen uptake rate (OUR) and general dehydrogenase activity, as expressed by the reduction of the electron-acceptor Dye 3-(4',5'-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 4-diphenyltetra-zolium bromide (MTT), were compared for their ability to measure microbial activity in mixed aerobic cultures. A fourth parameter, specific enzyme activity, was dropped from consideration because of the difficulty of developing a satisfactory experimental technique. Measurement of the parameters was applied to the biodegradation of phenol and o-chlorophenol by activated sludge from a municipal sewage treatment plant, and by two commercially available bacterial preparations.

MLSS, although the most commonly used of the three parameters tested, is …

Present Reliability Of Liquid Crystal Display Devices, C. N. Suresh Sep 1985

Present Reliability Of Liquid Crystal Display Devices, C. N. Suresh

Theses

The purpose of this Thesis is to study the life of liquid crystal display devices as at present available in the market place. To accomplish this, accelerated tempera-ture conditions at 77°C and 85°C were used.

During the last few years, there has grown a tremendous interest in wide range temperature operating and fast LCDs. It is therefore important to understand how LCDs behave under these conditions.

The reliability of a liquid crystal display is usually measured in terms of a quantative degradation in electrical performance and a degradation in visual appearance. The degradation in visual appear6knce may manifest itself as …
