Apap: The Arithmetic Pipeline Analysis Package, Chang-Chieh Lin
Theses
This study is aimed at the development of an interactive PC-based package for simulating data flow within an arithmetic pipeline in multiprocessor systems. The user constructs the arithmetic pipeline, specifying the functionality of each segment, the intersegment connectivity and pipeline inputs and outputs. After defining reservation tables and data, analysis is performed with the results available in tabular, simple graphic and animated graphic forms.
APAP allows the user to design hardware and analyze its functionality with-out building the circuit, an economical alternative. Even when circuits are to be built, APAP allows the user to correct logic errors before implementation, leaving …
On-Line Blood Glucose Control System, Huan Zheng
On-Line Blood Glucose Control System, Huan Zheng
Theses
A method has been developed that can monitor and control the meal initiation of rats. The goal of studying meal initiation is to find a mechanism of control of the diet, based upon the assumption that the body weight is closely related to feeding behavior. If the feeding behavior can be controlled, then the body weight can be controlled. The experimental system has two major functions: (1) Continuous measurement and recording of the blood glucose concentration and meal pattern of rats. (2) Automatic or manual infusing of glucose or other substances to the rats intravenously.
For blood glucose concentration and …

Determination Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons From Incineration Emission Samples, Robert Cebula
Theses
Stack emissions from five sources (one pulverized coal combustion operation, three sewage sludge incineration operations and one gray tin refractory operation) were sampled by use of U.S. EPA Modified Method 5 isokinetic sampling unit for vapor and particulate effluent. The sampling unit provided XAD-2 resin samples, polytetrafluoroethylene and glass fiber filters and impinger washings of dichloromethane. The resins were soxhlet extracted using dichloromethane (DCM) and the filters were soxhlet extracted using DCM followed by acetone. Fractionation of extracts was accomplished by thin layer chromatography. The resulting fractions were analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), nitro-PAH and quinone-PAH by high-performance liquid …

3-D Reconstruction Of Microvasculature From High Voltage Electron Microscopy (Hvem) Data, Pradip Kumar Paul
3-D Reconstruction Of Microvasculature From High Voltage Electron Microscopy (Hvem) Data, Pradip Kumar Paul
Theses
This is a new method for histoarchitectural and volumetric analyses of cell compartments of microvasculature with the use of a unique combination of computerized 3-D reconstruction and HVEM thick serial cross sections. The technology is potentially a reliable, simple, accurate and fast method. Pioneering work in this area was started by Todd et al. (Circ Res Vol :53 p 319 ;1983) basically using light microscopy, but supported by conventional ultrathin transmission electron microscopy. These techniques are important in that they promise to resolve controversies in terms of evaluating the occurance of hyperplasia and hypertrophy in small resistance vessels in various …

Biosynthesis Of Amine Oxides Using Calcium-Alginate Immobilized Hog Liver Microsomes : An Evaluation Of Process And Reactor Design, Ioannis I. Valvis
Theses
An evaluation of the biocatalytic ability and the potential utilization of Calcium-alginate immobilized hepatic microsomes (beads) for the biosynthesis of amine oxides has been performed, To accomplish this task, the following three areas Were investigated: immobilization, catalytic biooxidation ability, and reactor configurations.
Immobilization was found to result in higher yields over free microsomes at the expense of higher cofactor requirements. Refrigerated drying of immobilized micro-somes appears to be a better storage technique than wet storage in buffer. Smaller beads resulted in higher rates than larger beads, but size did not affect the overall yield.
Chlorpromazine (CPZ), diphenylamine (DPA) and 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine …

Plain Wire Fencing For Pastoral Lands, A Mcr Holm
Plain Wire Fencing For Pastoral Lands, A Mcr Holm
Bulletins 4000 -
The need to fence for efficient livestock control was recognised early in the history of the pastoral industry in Western Australia. Fence design, materials and layout have all undergone many changes since the 1880s. Modern fences have 4 or 5 strands of high tensile light gauge wires with post spacings up to 50m, and strains up to 4000m. These modern fences contain less material and are faster to erect than traditional fences, yet they provide an equally good, if not superior, barrier. The happy coincidence of strength and cost effectiveness will be apparent through this manual.
Environmental Assessment Of Las Vegas Wash And Lake Mead Artificial Wetlands Demonstration Project, John R. Baker, R. M. Gersberg, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Environmental Assessment Of Las Vegas Wash And Lake Mead Artificial Wetlands Demonstration Project, John R. Baker, R. M. Gersberg, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Publications (WR)
The effective use of artificial wetlands for treatment of municipal wastewater is well documented; however, design and economic data for artificial wetlands development are limited (Gersberg et al., 1984a). This is due partly to regional differences in climate, soils, and vegetation and partly to the desired waste treatment. As a result, specific treatment levels and cost benefits relative to the use of an artificial wetlands for a particular site cannot be evaluated adequately without a pilot demonstration project. Las Vegas Wash receives sewage effluent from the Las Vegas metropolitan area and has been designated as a wetlands community park. Las …
Synthesis And Characterization Of A Novel Blocked Isocyanate Dental Adhesive Based On Diphenylmethane - 4, 4' - Diisocyanate, Yangming Lin
Synthesis And Characterization Of A Novel Blocked Isocyanate Dental Adhesive Based On Diphenylmethane - 4, 4' - Diisocyanate, Yangming Lin
Theses
The dental adhesive monomers based on diphenylmethane - 4,4 - diisocyanate (MDI) were prepared and studied in this research. The diisocyanate, MDI, was first reacted with hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) to form an intermediate adduct. This adduct had an active isocyanate end group. It was then bonded with o-chlorophenol (OCP), a blocking agent, to produce a blocked isocyanate monomer.
The new blocked isocyanate (HEMA-MDI-OCP) was found to have an average value of more than 1200 psi in tensile tests measuring its adhesion to dentin slices.
Adsorption Of Nickel And Lead With Activated Sludge, Chi-Yun Chen
Adsorption Of Nickel And Lead With Activated Sludge, Chi-Yun Chen
Theses
Wastewater produced in domestic, commercial, and industrial activities often contains significant amounts of metals. This would result in the discharge of heavy metals into the sewer system. Some of the heavy metals can be adsorbed by activated sludge. This may present a problem for the treatment and ultimate disposal of sludge.
The purpose of the research was to determine how much metals can be adsorbed by sludge. Nickel and Lead were selected for this investigation because of their environmental significance. Both belong to priority pollutants considered potentially toxic. Factors affecting the adsorption, such as sludge concentration, metal concentration, mixing condition, …

Morphological Analysis Of Microvessels Using High Voltage Electron Microscopy (Hvem), Ibm Personal Computer And 3-D Reconstruction Software, Wieslaw Slawomir Krajewski
Theses
The mesenteric arterioles (outer diameter < 100 µ) from a normotensive and a hypertensive dog were perfused in situ, excised, post-fixed and embedded in Spurr medium block. Thick serial cross sections (0.5 µ) of the vessels were obtained from hand formed mesas and placed on Formvar coated slot grids.
The cross sections were subjected to High Voltage Electron Microscopy (HVEM) and five or more electronmicrographs were taken to cover the individual cross sections. The prints of electronmicrographs were linearly enlarged (3X) and made into photomontages of sections. The membrane contours in the montages were traced on transparent overlays, producing polygons which in turn were traced on GTCO digitizing pad. All polygons were labeled, color coded and stored in IBM PC's filing system. The vessels were reconstructed from up to 100 whole cross sections and subjected to cell compartmentalvolume analysis. The reconstructed images can be …

Design Of A Systolic Architecture To Implement Graphic Transforms, Aimee A. Murray
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The graphics generator hardware is an important component of flight-training simulators. The function of this hardware is to generate 3D perspective images at rates of 30 frames per second to produce realistic out-ofwindow scenes viewed by the crew under training. Within most graphics generator hardware are array processors which achieve high computation throughput necessary to generate real-time processing. The function of the array processors is to transform, clip, rotate and perspective project the data base into screen coordinates for use by the graphic generator. A FIMD (few instructions multiple data) systolic architecture is proposed to achieve high computational throughput that …

What Is Your Farm's Potential To Pollute Your Drinking Water Supply, Joseph L. Taraba
Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates
The following list of questions are a useful guide to assess whether farm and/or home activities or the type of well contribute to polluting your private drinking water well. If you answer "yes" for one or more of the questions than you should begin a program of annual well testing. It is recommended that a coliform bacteria test and nitrate test be performed annually. The annual cost for these tests performed by a testing laboratory is $26.00. There is an additional test that is available that determines if there is the presence of organic halides (chlorinated or brominated organics) called …
Rapid Method For Determining Fertilizer Nutrients In Liquid Dairy And Swine Manures, Joseph L. Taraba
Rapid Method For Determining Fertilizer Nutrients In Liquid Dairy And Swine Manures, Joseph L. Taraba
Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates
A rapid on-farm determination is needed to assess the fertilizer contents of liquid manure as it is taken from storage. Rapid determination of a tank load for liquid manure will indicate nutrient changes that occur as manure is removed from a storage which cannot be or is not effectively agitated before manure removal. Effective utilization of animal manures as a fertilizer resource requires a farmer to have a knowledge of the amount of nutrients that he is putting onto the soil. If the producer then reduces the commercial fertilizer, he can realize the fertilizer economic value of the manure. Laboratory …

The density, refractive index, thermal expansion coefficient, and microhardness increased with increasing Sm …
A Simple Solid-Phase Electrophoretic Procedure For The Separation Of Plasmid Dna, Linda Ann Simurra
A Simple Solid-Phase Electrophoretic Procedure For The Separation Of Plasmid Dna, Linda Ann Simurra
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
A method was developed for extraction of plasmid DNA from bacterial cells embedded in agarose blocks. Cell - containing blocks were treated with various lysing reagents and inserted into the wells of an agarose gel. Upon electrophoresis the plasmid DNA migrated out of the embedding block and into the gel leaving intact chromosomal DNA in the well. This method was tested with various organisms and found to be effective for plasmid isolation. In comparison to "traditional" procedures, this new method is less tedious since chemical separation of plasmids is not required prior to electrophoresis. Also, a higher yield of plasmid …
Behavior Of Reinforced Loess Specimens Under Triaxial Load, Mohammad Taghi Izadi
Behavior Of Reinforced Loess Specimens Under Triaxial Load, Mohammad Taghi Izadi
Masters Theses
"Effects of reinforcement on shear strength of a loessial (silty) soil arc studied. Unconsolidated undrained triaxial tests are performed on unreinforced and fabric reinforced soil specimens. Analyses of the test results showed that in general the shear strength of remolded loess specimens were improved substantially and increase in the shear strength was directly related to reinforcement spacing.
The mechanism of soil-reinforcement interaction and several existing analytical models are described. A modified analytical model based on enhanced confining theory is developed. This model can be used in assessing the effects of the reinforcement on shear strength of triaxial specimens. Comparison of …

A Rapid, Widely Applicable Screen For Drugs That Suppress Free Radical Formation In Ischemia/Reperfusion, Steven C. Salaris, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Substantial injury can occur during reoxygenation of previously ischemic tissue in many experimental models, as the result of the generation of oxygen-derived free radicals. To test the antiradical activity of potentially protective compounds in this setting, we developed a simple screening system, applicable to fresh biopsy specimens, in which warm ischemia and reoxygenation of excised tissue are performed in vitro. Tissue production of malondialdehyde (MDA) equivalents is used as a nonspecific-but-sensitive marker of oxygen radical damage. Test compounds with putative antiradical activity are added prior to the reoxygenation phase, and their ability to suppress MDA production is an index of …

Myocardial Perfusion Pressure: A Predictor Of 24hour Survival During Prolonged Cardiac Arrest In Dogs, Karl B. Kern, Gordon A. Ewy, William D. Voorhees, Charles F. Babbs, Willis A. Tacker
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Myocardial perfusion pressure, defined as the aortic diastolic pressure minus the right atria1 diastolic pressure, correlates with coronary blood flow during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and predicts initial resuscitation success. Whether this hemodynamic parameter can predict 24-h survival is not known. We examined the relationship between myocardial perfusion pressure and 24-h survival in 60 dogs that underwent prolonged (20 min) ventricular fibrillation and CPR. Forty-two (70%) animals were initially resuscitated and 20 (33%) survived for 24 h. Myocardial perfusion pressure was significantly greater when measured at 5, 10, 15 and 20 min of ventricular fibrillation in the resuscitated animals than in …
