Numerical Techniques For Excitation And Analysis Of Defect Modes In Photonic Crystals, Shangping Guo, Sacharia Albin Jan 2003

Numerical Techniques For Excitation And Analysis Of Defect Modes In Photonic Crystals, Shangping Guo, Sacharia Albin

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Two numerical techniques for analysis of defect modes in photonic crystals are presented. Based on the finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD), we use plane wave incidences and point sources for excitation and analysis. Using a total-field/scattered-field scheme, an ideal plane wave incident at different angles is implemented; defect modes are selectively excited and mode symmetries are probed. All modes can be excited by an incident plane wave along a non-symmetric direction of the crystal. Degenerate modes can also be differentiated using this method. A proper arrangement of point sources with positive and negative amplitudes in the cavity flexibly excites any chosen …

Entrainment Of Electrical Activation By Spatio-Temporal Distributed Pacing During Ventricular Fibrillation, Yiping Gu Jan 2003

Entrainment Of Electrical Activation By Spatio-Temporal Distributed Pacing During Ventricular Fibrillation, Yiping Gu

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Spatio-temporal variation in action intervals during ventricular fibrillation (VF) suggestthat the excitable gap may also be distributed spatio-temporally. The observation leadus to hypothesize that distributed pacing can be used to modify and entrain electricalactivation during VF. We tested this hypothesis using simulated VF and animal studies.

We simulated VF in a 400 by 400 cell matrix. Simulation results showed that activationpattern could be entrained using spatially distributed stimulation. Up to a certain limit, increasing stimulus strength and density led to improved entrainment. Best entrainmentwas obtained by pacing at a cycle length similar to the intrinsic cycle length.

Mechanisms Of Volatile Anesthetic-Induced Myocardial Protection, Lynda M. Ludwig, Judy R. Kersten, Katsuya Tanaka, Weidong Gu, John F. Ladisa, David C. Warltier, Paul S. Pagel Jan 2003

Mechanisms Of Volatile Anesthetic-Induced Myocardial Protection, Lynda M. Ludwig, Judy R. Kersten, Katsuya Tanaka, Weidong Gu, John F. Ladisa, David C. Warltier, Paul S. Pagel

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Volatile anesthetics protect myocardium against reversible and irreversible ischemic injury. Experimental evidence from several in vitro and in vivo animal models demonstrates that volatile agents enhance the recovery of stunned myocardium and reduce the size of myocardial infarction after brief or prolonged coronary artery occlusion and reperfusion, respectively. This protective effect persists after the anesthetic has been discontinued, a phenomenon known as anesthetic-induced preconditioning (APC). Recent clinical data also demonstrates evidence of APC in patients during cardiac surgery. Thus, administration of volatile anesthetics may represent a novel therapeutic approach that reduces morbidity and mortality associated with perioperative myocardial ischemia and …

An important application of mobile robots is searching a region to locate the origin of a specific phenomenon. A variety of optimization algorithms can be employed to locate the target source, which has the maximum intensity of the distribution of some detected function. We propose two neural network algorithms: stochastic optimization algorithm and dual heuristic programming (DHP) to solve the collective robotic search problem. Experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of noise and the number of robots on the task performance, as well as the expenses. The experimental results showed that the performance of the dual heuristic programming …

A Study Of The Security Implications Involved With The Use Of Executable World Wide Web Content, Christopher Hu Jan 2003

A Study Of The Security Implications Involved With The Use Of Executable World Wide Web Content, Christopher Hu

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Malicious executable code is nothing new. While many consider that the concept of malicious code began in the 1980s when the first PC viruses began to emerge, the concept does in fact date back even earlier. Throughout the history of malicious code, methods of hostile code delivery have mirrored prevailing patterns of code distribution. In the 1980s, file infecting and boot sector viruses were common, mirroring the fact that during this time, executable code was commonly transferred via floppy disks. Since the 1990s email has been a major vector for malicious code attacks. Again, this mirrors the fact that during …

Fuzzy Logic In Collective Robotic Search, Nian Zhang, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

One important application of mobile robots is searching a geographical region to locate the origin of a specific sensible phenomenon. We first propose a fuzzy logic approach using a decision table. A novel fuzzy rule based was designed. And then a fuzzy search strategy is adopted by utilizing the three tier centers of mass coordination. Experimental results show that fuzzy logic algorithm is an efficient approach for the collective robots to locate the target source. In addition, noise and the position of the target affect the searching result.

Assessment Of The 1997 Commodity Flow Survey For State-Level Freight Transportation Planning, Darren M. Scott Dec 2002

Assessment Of The 1997 Commodity Flow Survey For State-Level Freight Transportation Planning, Darren M. Scott

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Urban travel demand modeling in the United States has a rich history in both practice and academic research. The same cannot be said, however, of freight demand modeling despite the intermodel planning requirements of IS TEA and TEA21. In most instances, agencies responsible for state transportation planning (e.g. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet) have applied, in a limited way, the methodology developed for urban travel demand modeling (i.e., Urban Transportation Modeling System or UTMS 1) to the freight arena (see, for example, Black 1997). Obviously, this methodological similarity implies that the fundamental data requirements for both types of demand modeling are also …

Mechanism Of Preconditioning By Isoflurane In Rabbits: A Direct Role For Reactive Oxygen Species, Katsuya Tanaka, Dorothee Weihrauch, Franz Kehl, Lynda M. Ludwig, John F. Ladisa, Judy R. Kersten, Paul S. Pagel, David C. Warltier

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

LARGE quantities of reactive oxygen species (ROS) released during reperfusion after coronary artery occlusion damage proteins responsible for intracellular homeostasis, produce tissue injury, depress contractile function, and increase myocardial infarct size. In contrast, small quantities of ROS may exert beneficial effects during ischemia and reperfusion when released before a prolonged ischemic event. ROS derived from mitochondria during a brief ischemic episode produce preconditioning. Free radical scavengers administered during ischemic preconditioning (IPC) markedly attenuate the protective effect of the preconditioning stimulus on infarct size. These data suggest that IPC is mediated in part by small quantities of ROS released during preconditioning. …

Ccr4-Bearing T Cells Participate In Autoimmune Diabetes., Soon H. Kim, Mary M. Cleary, Howard S. Fox, Icos Coporation, Nora Sarvetnick

Journal Articles: Regenerative Medicine

Chemokine receptor expression is exquisitely regulated on T cell subsets during the course of their migration to inflammatory sites. In the present study we demonstrate that CCR4 expression marks a pathogenic population of autoimmune T cells. CCR4 was found exclusively on memory CD4(+) T cells during the progression of disease in NOD mice. Cells expressing the CCR4 ligand TARC (thymus- and activation-regulated chemokine) were detected within infiltrated islets from prediabetic mice. Interestingly, neutralization of macrophage-derived chemokine (MDC) with Ab caused a significant reduction of CCR4-positive T cells within the pancreatic infiltrates and inhibited the development of insulitis and diabetes. Furthermore, …
