Discrete Event Simulation Model Of The Ground Maintenance Operations Cycle Of A Reusable Launch Vehicle, John T. Pope Iii Mar 2006

Discrete Event Simulation Model Of The Ground Maintenance Operations Cycle Of A Reusable Launch Vehicle, John T. Pope Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force uses a family of expendable launch vehicles to meet its spacelift needs. Unfortunately, this method is not responsive: months of preparation are typically required and launch costs are high. Consequently, the Air Force seeks a reusable military launch vehicle that can be launched inexpensively and quickly regenerated between flights. Air Force Research Laboratory personnel desire a tool to help evaluate candidate designs and perform tradeoff studies necessary to acquire a launch vehicle that will achieve Air Force goals. The objective of this research was first to develop a conceptual model of maintenance operations needed to regenerate a …

Performance Analysis Of A Cooperative Search Algorithm For Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Under Limited Communication Conditions, Kevin M. Morris Mar 2006

Performance Analysis Of A Cooperative Search Algorithm For Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Under Limited Communication Conditions, Kevin M. Morris

Theses and Dissertations

This research investigates the impacts of realistic wireless communications upon a group of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) utilizing a distributed search algorithm. The UAVs are used to survey an area for mobile targets and they require communication to cooperatively locate the targets. The mobile targets do not continually radiate energy, which exacerbates the search effort; a UAV could fly directly over a target and not detect it. A simulation of cooperative UAVs is implemented using the OPNET Modeler network simulation tool. The search performance of a group of UAVs is observed when communication range, data rate, and the number of …

Exploiting Semi-Directional Transceivers For Localization In Communication Systems, Andrew S. Crockford Mar 2006

Exploiting Semi-Directional Transceivers For Localization In Communication Systems, Andrew S. Crockford

Theses and Dissertations

Localization is the process of determining relative, as well as absolute, positions of communicating devices. Traditionally, the process is conducted using range or directional estimates. In contrast, this research uses weak information to form relatively tight bounds on possible locations of communicating devices. Under certain conditions, achieved location estimation results are strong. However, these results are highly sensitive to the operating conditions of the proposed networks. More significant results were obtained from specialized cases and that the application yields somewhat limited information for a general randomized network topology. Feasible localization results were found to be attainable but not necessarily practical …

Improving Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Maintenance Scheduling Through The Use Of Location Analysis Methodologies, Dale L. Overholts Ii

Theses and Dissertations

The events of September 11, 2001 have led to increased security requirements for all ICBM-related activities. Missile maintenance managers must explore new scheduling techniques to sustain weapon system readiness levels in light of published security enhancements. The problem of improving missile maintenance scheduling is modeled as a two-stage heuristic that utilizes the maximal covering location problem methodology. Maintenance activities are categorized and weighted according to published priority designation and mission impact. The model’s first stage seeks to select two security umbrellas that maximize the weighted sum of maintenance activities. Stage two seeks to determine a maintenance schedule comprised of launch …

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Background

The phase-space relationship between simultaneously measured myoplasmic [Ca2+] and isovolumetric left ventricular pressure (LVP) in guinea pig intact hearts is altered by ischemic and inotropic interventions. Our objective was to mathematically model this phase-space relationship between [Ca2+] and LVP with a focus on the changes in cross-bridge kinetics and myofilament Ca2+ sensitivity responsible for alterations in Ca2+-contraction coupling due to inotropic drugs in the presence and absence of ischemia reperfusion (IR) injury.

Methods

We used a four state computational model to predict LVP using experimentally measured, averaged myoplasmic [Ca2+] transients …

A Platform For Antenna Optimization With Numerical Electromagnetics Code Incorporated With Genetic Algorithms, Timothy L. Pitzer Mar 2006

A Platform For Antenna Optimization With Numerical Electromagnetics Code Incorporated With Genetic Algorithms, Timothy L. Pitzer

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigation presents a unique incorporation of the Method of Moments (MoM) with a Genetic Algorithm (GA). A GA is used in accord with the Numerical Electromagnetics Code, Version 4 (NEC4) to create and optimize typical wire antenna designs, including single elements and arrays. Design parameters for the antenna are defined and encoded into a chromosome composed of a series of numbers. The cost function associated with the specific antenna of interest is what quantifies improvement and, eventually, optimization. This cost function is created and used by the GA to evaluate the performance of a population of antenna designs. …

Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Faculty Publications

The objective of this paper is to perform a comprehensive experimental and numerical analysis of the short pulse laser interaction with tissue medium with the goal of tumor / cancer diagnostics. For short pulse laser source, the shape of output signal is a function of the optical properties of the medium and hence the scattered temporal optical signal helps in understanding of the medium characteristics. Initially experiments are performed on tissue phantoms imbedded with inhomogeneities in order to optimize the time-resolved optical detection scheme. Both the temporal and the spatial profiles of the scattered reflected and transmitted optical signals are …

Sustainable Mining: Trends And Opportunities, James L. Hendrix Feb 2006

Sustainable Mining: Trends And Opportunities, James L. Hendrix

Papers in Sustainable Mining

Sustainable development integrates economic, environmental and social considerations in order to improve the lives of the current generation and ensure that future generations will have adequate resources and opportunities. Sustainable mining is not a new approach or concept in resource consumption. It is a holistic approach for dealing with a complex, interlinked set of factors that determine the net societal worth of a project. A holistic approach to phosphate beneficiation gives us opportunities for the improvement of economic results through reactant and waste minimization. It also gives direction for continued research thrusts to solve the problems associated with the clay …

Stormwater Irrigation Volume Ii: Cyanobacteria Counts With Toxin Concentrations In Stormwater Ponds And After Biofiltration To Reduce Health Risks (2006), Martin Wanielista

BMP Trains Research and Publications

Algal blooms are a common occurrence in water bodies of all shapes and sizes in the State of Florida as well as all other locations around the world. Cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, have proven to be of special concern due to proliferation and potential to produce toxins that are harmful to humans, livestock and wildlife. Casual observations of lakes and stormwater ponds in Florida will confirm algal conditions in many. The health risks and the potential for exposure to harmful and possibly fatal toxins associated with these algal blooms are becoming more evident as more nutrients are discharged to our …

Stormwater Irrigation Volume I: Evapotranspiration And Nitrate Reduction After Biofiltration To Reduce Health Risks, Martin Wanielista, Ewoud Hulstein Feb 2006

Stormwater Irrigation Volume I: Evapotranspiration And Nitrate Reduction After Biofiltration To Reduce Health Risks, Martin Wanielista, Ewoud Hulstein

BMP Trains Research and Publications

Irrigation of detained stormwater is an option available for volume and pollution control. Volume control is accomplished when detained waters normally discharged from a detention facility are used instead for irrigation. However, a health risk may result if the nitrate in the irrigation water is not attenuated in the plant and soil matrix. The nitrate level in stormwater ponds is generally much less that the health risk specified as 10 mg/L in Drinking water standards. Nevertheless, the fate of nitrate in the soil plant matrix has not been documented. In addition, there are other potential problems associated with not maintaining …

Adaptive Evolution Of Chloroplast Genome Structure Inferred Using A Parametric Bootstrap Approach, Liying Cui, Jim Leebens-Mack, Li-San Wang, Jijun Tang, Linda Rymarquis, David B. Stern, Claude W. Depamphilis Feb 2006

Adaptive Evolution Of Chloroplast Genome Structure Inferred Using A Parametric Bootstrap Approach, Liying Cui, Jim Leebens-Mack, Li-San Wang, Jijun Tang, Linda Rymarquis, David B. Stern, Claude W. Depamphilis

Faculty Publications

Background
Genome rearrangements influence gene order and configuration of gene clusters in all genomes. Most land plant chloroplast DNAs (cpDNAs) share a highly conserved gene content and with notable exceptions, a largely co-linear gene order. Conserved gene orders may reflect a slow intrinsic rate of neutral chromosomal rearrangements, or selective constraint. It is unknown to what extent observed changes in gene order are random or adaptive. We investigate the influence of natural selection on gene order in association with increased rate of chromosomal rearrangement. We use a novel parametric bootstrap approach to test if directional selection is responsible for the …

The Effects Of Aging On Cardiac Mechanics, Samuel C. Lieber Jan 2006

The Effects Of Aging On Cardiac Mechanics, Samuel C. Lieber

Dissertations

It is well established that the aging heart exhibits left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction and changes in mechanical properties, which have been attributed to alterations in the extracellular matrix (ECM). The investigators tested the hypothesis that the mechanical properties of cardiac myocytes significantly change with aging thereby contributing to the LV diastolic dysfunction. Cellular mechanical properties were determined by indenting cells with an atomic force microscope (AFM). The indentation results were interpreted by modeling the AFM probe as a blunted cone and determining an apparent elastic modulus (B) with classical infinitesimal strain theory (CIST). A commercially available finite element software …

Experimental Study On Two-Dimensional Propagating Edge Flames: Cold Flow Modeling And Flame Spread Rate Measurements, Marcos Villa-Gonzalez Jan 2006

Experimental Study On Two-Dimensional Propagating Edge Flames: Cold Flow Modeling And Flame Spread Rate Measurements, Marcos Villa-Gonzalez

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the results of an experimental study on two-dimensional, planar propagating edge flames. The results were generated using a new apparatus in which a thin stream of gaseous fuel is injected into a low-speed laminar wind tunnel thereby forming a flammable layer along the centerline. The fuel injector consists of aluminum airfoil with a thin slot in its trailing edge, from which fuel is injected. After the initial stratified fuel/air layer is developed, a flame is ignited near the tunnel outlet, and the flame spreads against the incoming air, toward the fuel source. Experiments were conducted with methane …

Computational fluid dynamics predictions were performed at Mach numbers between 0.20 and 0.95 with a full scale model of the ARGUS configuration at conditions to match wind tunnel testing that has been performed at the USAFA Subsonic Wind Tunnel. Configurations consist of brakes fully deployed for a nominal brake fin and a perforated brake fin. Steady-stated computations were performed using the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model at angles of attack between 0 degrees to 20 degrees at roll angles of 0 degrees and 45 degrees. …

Vegetative Treatment Systems For Management Of Open Lot Runoff: Review Of Literature, Richard K. Koelsch, Jeffrey C. Lorimer, Kyle R. Mankin Jan 2006

Vegetative Treatment Systems For Management Of Open Lot Runoff: Review Of Literature, Richard K. Koelsch, Jeffrey C. Lorimer, Kyle R. Mankin

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Runoff from open lot livestock systems (beef and dairy) defined as Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO) must be controlled by systems designed and managed to prevent the release of manure-contaminated runoff for storms equal to or less than a 25-yr, 24-h design storm. This performance standard has been attained for open lot systems with some combination of clean water diversion, settling basins, runoff collection ponds, and irrigation systems (baseline system).

An alternative approach is to rely on overland flow and infiltration into cropland with perennial forage or grasses for treatment of open lot runoff. Such vegetative systems have been researched …

The Utep Corpus Of Iraqi Arabic, Nigel Ward, David G. Novick, Salamah I. Salamah

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The rules governing turn-taking phenomena are not well understood in general and almost completely undocumented for Arabic. As the first step to modeling these phenomena, we have collected a small corpus of Iraqi Arabic spoken dialogs. The corpus is in three parts. Part A is 110 minutes of unstructured conversations. Parts B1 and B2 are 176 minutes of direction-giving dialogs, most including a greeting phase, a smalltalk phase, a request phase, and a direction-giving phase. Parts A and B1 were recorded with 13 native speakers of Iraqi Arabic, interacting in pairs. In Part B2 the direction-getter is an American with …

Process Modeling For Simulation, John Ryan, Cathal Heavey Jan 2006

Process Modeling For Simulation, John Ryan, Cathal Heavey

Articles

This paper discusses shortfalls in relation to the requirements gathering phases of simulation. While many developments have taken place around supporting the model coding task of simulation, there are few tools available to assist in the requirements gathering phase. This is surprising as it has been reported by several researchers that the requirements phase can absorb twice as much resources as the coding phase. There are numerous process modeling tools available (over 100) that can and have been used to support the requirements phase of simulation. This paper provides a selective review of some of the most important in relation …

Predictions On Preserving Bone Mass In Knee Arthroplasty With Bisphosphonates, Jeffry S. Nyman, Juan J. Rodrigo, Scott J. Hazelwood, Oscar C. Yeh, R. Bruce Martin Jan 2006

Predictions On Preserving Bone Mass In Knee Arthroplasty With Bisphosphonates, Jeffry S. Nyman, Juan J. Rodrigo, Scott J. Hazelwood, Oscar C. Yeh, R. Bruce Martin

Biomedical Engineering

Using a computational model of bone adaptation, we investigated the long-term ability of bisphosphonates to minimize proximal bone loss that is associated with stress shielding in the tibia after long-stemmed total knee arthroplasty (TKA). When invoking bisphosphonate effects, the remodeling activity was suppressed, and the resorption size was reduced. Compared with the untreated simulation, bisphosphonate slowed the rate of bone loss after TKA (42% reduction in bone loss at 1 year). Activating the drug 3 months before the surgery reversed bone loss associated with the reduction in such activities as walking, but it did not provide any substantial benefit in …

Continuing Evolution Of Aerodynamic Concept Development Using Collaborative Numerical And Experimental Evaluations, Russell M. Cummings, Scott A. Morton Jan 2006

Continuing Evolution Of Aerodynamic Concept Development Using Collaborative Numerical And Experimental Evaluations, Russell M. Cummings, Scott A. Morton

Aerospace Engineering

Traditionally, computational predictions and experimental evaluations of aerodynamic concepts have been conducted separately, with little collaboration other than post priori comparisons of results. This has led to distrust and even antagonism between the computational and the experimental communities. These difficulties probably began when early computational fluid dynamic practitioners boasted that wind tunnels would become secondary in aerodynamic concept development within a few short years, a prediction that has not come true. On the contrary, it is believed that a great deal of synergy can be cultivated when computational and experimental evaluations are conducted in an integrative fashion. A variety of …

Kinetic Characterization For Pretreatment Of Timber Varieties And Switchgrass Using Diluted Acid Hydrolysis, Shu Chiang Yat

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

In recent years, growing attention has been devoted to the use of lignocellulosic biomass as a feedstock to produce renewable carbohydrates as a source of energy products, including liquid alternatives to fossil fuels. The benefits of developing woody biomass to ethanol technology are to increase the long-term national energy security, reduce fossil energy consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions, use renewable rather than depletable resources, and create local jobs. Currently, research is driven by the need to reduce the cost of biomass-ethanol production. One of the preferred methods is to thermochemically pretreat the biomass material and subsequently, enzymatically hydrolyze the pretreated …

The objectives of this study were to provide data that can be used to predict exposure-based effects of RDX in aged soil on multiple endpoint organisms representing two trophic levels. These data can be used for defining criteria or reference values for environmental management and conducting specific risk assessment. Dose–response experiments formed the basis for the evaluation of toxic effects and transfer of contaminants from soil into two trophic levels. Long-term exposure tests were conducted to evaluate chronic, sublethal, toxicity and transfer of aged soil-based explosives, with RDX as main contaminant. In these tests, plants were exposed for 55 days …

Osteon Interfacial Strength And Histomorphometry Of Equine Cortical Bone, Robert F. Bigley, Lanny V. Griffin, Lisa Christensen, Ryan Vandenbosch Jan 2006

Osteon Interfacial Strength And Histomorphometry Of Equine Cortical Bone, Robert F. Bigley, Lanny V. Griffin, Lisa Christensen, Ryan Vandenbosch

Biomedical Engineering

The interfacial strength of secondary osteons from the diaphysis of the Thoroughbred equine third metacarpal was evaluated using the fiber pushout test. The pushout was performed on 300–500 mm sections of 4x4x15mm bone blocks machined from four anatomic regions of the cortex. Pushout strength was evaluated from proximal to distal location within the diaphysis on four osteon types classified under polarized light on adjacent histologic sections from each block. The shear strength of the interfaces were estimated from shear lag theory. Differences were found in the interfacial strength of osteons based on appearance under polarized light with bright field having …
