Kinetics, Thermodynamics, And Biological Characterizations Of Hydrolysates Enzymatically Produced From Proteins Extracted From Microalgae, Hebah Al-Amodi
Theses
This thesis aims to explore the use of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-L (ZIF-L) as a support for immobilizing alcalase and its potency in producing protein hydrolysates. ZIF-L was synthesized at room temperature using an aqueous solution, and alcalase was immobilized through adsorption batch experiment. The successful immobilization of alcalase on ZIF-L was confirmed through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The maximum adsorption capacity of alcalase on ZIF-L was determined to be 672.1 ± 5.5 mg g-1 at 40°C using an initial protein concentration of 5 mg mL-1. Adsorption equilibrium data …

Models of the underwater acoustic soundscape are important for evaluating the effects of human generated sounds on marine life. The performance of models can be validated against measurements or verified against each other for consistency. A verification workshop was held to compare models that predict the soundscape from wind and vessels and estimate detection ranges for a submerged target. Eight modeling groups participated in the workshop which predicted sound levels with observation windows of 1 min and 1 km2. Substantial differences were found in how modelers computed the propagation losses for decidecade bands and estimated the source level of wind. …
Deciphering Rodent Behavior: Unraveling Complex Decision-Making Through High-Throughput Data Analysis In Behavioral Neuroscience, Atanu Giri
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Understanding the effects of substance use on decision-making is critical for both clinical andtranslational research. In this thesis, I present two complementary studies that explore decision- making behavior in rodents with a focus on alcohol consumption and novel experimental frame- works. The first study examines the impact of acute alcohol consumption on decision-making in a behavioral approach-avoidance task. Rats were presented with a concurrent choice of consuming alcohol and sucrose mixtures across four distinct concentrations, allowing for the analysis of ap- proach or avoidance behavior. Sex-dependent differences emerged, with male rats demonstrating a significantly higher tendency to approach higher alcohol …

This paper provides an analysis of the interpretable machine learning (IML) approach applied to various nonlinear dynamic systems. The study focuses on modeling the restoring force by neural networks with two input values: displacement and velocity. A parallel neural network with the proposed architecture, initialized randomly, mirrors the designed model. Both models undergo multiple training and testing cycles on identical datasets to ensure robust statistical validation. The findings demonstrate that interpretable artificial neural networks (ANNs) outperform randomly initialized models in terms of accuracy and result consistency. This research provides valuable insights into the application of IML techniques for advancing the …

Collagen (Col) is commonly used as a natural biomaterial for biomedical applications. Although Col I is the most prevalent col type employed, many collagen types work together in vivo to confer function and biological activity. Thus, blending collagen types can better recapitulate many native environments. This work investigates how hydrogel properties can be tuned through blending collagen types (col I/II and col I/III) and by varying polymerization temperatures. Col I/II results in poorly developed fibril networks, which softened the gels, especially at lower polymerization temperatures. Conversely, col I/III hydrogels exhibit well-connected fibril networks with localized areas of fine fibrils and …

Flight-by-feel (FBF) is an approach to flight control that uses dispersed sensors on the wings of aircraft to detect flight state. While biological FBF systems, such as the wings of insects, often contain hundreds of strain and flow sensors, artificial systems are highly constrained by size, weight, and power (SWaP) considerations, especially for small aircraft. An optimization approach is needed to determine how many sensors are required and where they should be placed on the wing. Airflow fields can be highly nonlinear, and many local minima exist for sensor placement, meaning conventional optimization techniques are unreliable for this application. The …

Quadrupedal robots are confronted with the intricate challenge of navigating dynamic environments fraught with diverse and unpredictable scenarios. Effectively identifying and responding to obstacles is paramount for ensuring safe and reliable navigation. This paper introduces a pioneering method for 3D object detection, termed viewpoint feature histograms, which leverages the established paradigm of 2D detection in projection. By translating 2D bounding boxes into 3D object proposals, this approach not only enables the reuse of existing 2D detectors but also significantly increases the performance with less computation required, allowing for real-time detection. Our method is versatile, targeting both bird’s eye view objects …

Faculty Scholarship
We report a single-step optical clearing method that is compatible with RNA fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) imaging. We previously demonstrated microscopy imaging with immunohistochemistry and genetic reporters using a technique called lipid-preserving refractive index matching for prolonged imaging depth (LIMPID). Our protocol reliably produces high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) images with minimal aberrations using high magnification objectives, captures large field-of-view images of whole-mount tissues, and supports co-labeling with antibody and FISH probes. We also custom-designed FISH probes for quail embryos, demonstrating the ease of fabricating probes for use with less common animal models. Furthermore, we show high-quality 3D images using a …

Advances In Biomedical Research And Treatments: What Is Acceptable?, Michael L. Clancy, Khalid M. Iskandarani, Mitchell C. Mccrea
Journal of Health Ethics
This study investigated the technology acceptance (TA) of twenty-first century biomedical treatments by adults in the United States. A new TA instrument was created, using five distinct levels: (1) Healing and Prevention, (2) Replacement Organs, (3) Enhancements-Medical, (4) Enhancements-Discretionary, and (5) Transhumans. An on-line survey produced 353 usable responses, which showed distinct patterns for each of five biomedical treatment levels. There was clear support for Levels 1–3, but very strong opposition to Levels 4–5. The TA finding draws the line between which human interventions are acceptable versus others that should be prohibited through public policies and medical guidelines.

A Study On The Polarity Of Generalized Neutrosophic Ideals In Bck-Algebra, Bavanari Satyanarayana, Shake Baji
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
In this study, we apply k-polar generalized neutrosophic logic to the ideal of BCK-algebra and consequently introduce the notion of a k-polar generalized neutrosophic ideal in BCK-algebra with an example. We provide conditions for a k-polar generalized neutrosophic set to be a k-polar generalized neutrosophic ideal. We prove that every k-polar generalized neutrosophic ideal is a k-polar generalized neutrosophic subalgebra, but the converse is not true, which can be illustrated with an example. Furthermore, we prove that a k-polar generalized neutrosophic set is a k-polar generalized neutrosophic ideal if and only if its corresponding cut sets are ideals of the …

Delivery Of Tgfβ3 From Magnetically Responsive Coaxial Fibers Reduces Spinal Cord Astrocyte Reactivity In Vitro, Jessica L. Funnell, Jasper Fougere, Diana Zahn, Silvio Dutz, Ryan J. Gilbert
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A spinal cord injury (SCI) compresses the spinal cord, killing neurons and glia at the injury site and resulting in prolonged inflammation and scarring that prevents regeneration. Astrocytes, the main glia in the spinal cord, become reactive following SCI and contribute to adverse outcomes. The anti-inflammatory cytokine transforming growth factor beta 3 (TGFβ3) has been shown to mitigate astrocyte reactivity; however, the effects of prolonged TGFβ3 exposure on reactive astrocyte phenotype have not yet been explored. This study investigates whether magnetic core-shell electro spun fibers can be used to alter the release rate of TGFβ3 using externally applied magnetic fields, …

Wind Shear Induced Tornados With Full Thermodynamic Effects, Kakkattukuzhy M. Isaac
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Wind shear-induced Tornado behavior under full thermodynamic formulation using the ideal gas equation is investigated. The computational fluid dynamics model that includes the energy equation is used to obtain solutions of a natural-scale tornado under pressure and temperature boundary conditions that account for their variations vs. altitude in the atmosphere. The present results show significant differences from previous isothermal simulations and those using the Boussinesq model for buoyancy under small temperature differences. Results show that the downdraft observed in tornados originating from supercells, often accompanied by rain and hail can be captured using the present model that simulates the genesis, …

Biomedical Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a genetic or drug-induced electrophysiological disorder in the heart that prolongs the QT interval on the electrocardiogram. LQTS is present in considerable proportions (1:3000 to 1:5000) of the general population. LQTS has a high incidence of malignant ventricular arrhythmias during physical and emotional stress and is a significant cause of sudden death in younger subjects. This poses a substantial medical burden on the healthcare system in terms of morbidity, mortality, and finances. Despite extensive genetic research into LQTS, the mechanisms underlying spontaneous initiation and maintenance of arrhythmias are not fully understood. Beta-blockers are the standard …
Real-Time Navigation System For Breast Cancer Surgery With Pre- And Intra-Operative Imaging Using Neural Networks, Motaz Alqaoud
Real-Time Navigation System For Breast Cancer Surgery With Pre- And Intra-Operative Imaging Using Neural Networks, Motaz Alqaoud
Biomedical Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Breast cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed malignancies in women worldwide, necessitating precise diagnosis and treatment. Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) is the primary treatment for nonpalpable cases, yet current approaches often lack accuracy due to the absence of real-time 3D imaging during surgery. This limitation impairs surgeons’ ability to visualize tumor locations, compromising outcomes and potentially leading to repeat surgeries with higher risks, undesirable cosmetic results, increased costs, and, in some cases, mastectomy. Thus, there is a critical need for a navigation system to facilitate accurate tumor excision in nonpalpable breast cancer through real-time patient-specific 3D tracking.

Intercellular Mitochondrial Transfer Contributes To Microenvironmental Fate Redirection Of Mammary Cancer Cells, Julie Sofie Bjerring
Biomedical Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The dynamic cellular microenvironment, made up of resident cells and various macromolecules, differs markedly across tissues in the body. The multidirectional signals that cells receive from this microenvironment, along with the signaling they send back, heavily influence their physiology and behavior. Recent important findings have further validated this notion as the mammary microenvironment has been shown to suppress tumor progression by redirecting cancer cells to adopt a normal mammary epithelial progenitor fate in vivo. However, the mechanism(s) driving changes in metabolic reprogramming and cancer fate redirection is understudied. The work presented in this dissertation focuses on exploring the impact of …
