Michigan Tech Publications
Biomaterials with inherent anti-inflammatory properties and the ability to foster a pro-regenerative environment hold significant promise for enhancing cell transplantation and tissue regeneration. Fucoidan, a sulfated polysaccharide with well-documented immune-regulatory and antioxidant capabilities, offers strong potential for creating such biomaterials. Yet, there is a lack of engineered fucoidan hydrogels that are injectable and provide tunable physicochemical properties. In this study, the ability of fucoidan to undergo periodate-mediated oxidation is leveraged to introduce aldehydes into backbone (oxidized fucoidan, OFu), enabling the formation of reversible, imine-crosslinks with amine-containing molecules such as gelatin. The imine-crosslinked OFu-gelatin hydrogel provided excellent control over gelation rate …

Measuring The Effects Of The Leaves On Stalk Strength And Dynamic Response In Maize, Grant C. Ogilvie
Theses and Dissertations
Maize is one of the most widely cultivated grains in the world, making it crucial to world food security and important economically. One major problem in maize production is stalk lodging (greensnap), which results in billions of dollars in lost harvests annually for maize farmers in the US alone. Understanding the mechanical properties of maize plants is crucial to addressing this problem. Previous studies have suggested that the leaf blades and leaf sheaths affect maize mechanical properties. The objectives of this thesis are twofold: to present measurement techniques for the stalk bending strength, damping ratio, and natural frequency of maize …

Consequently, water reuse is now considered as an alternative to significantly expand supplies of freshwater in communities facing water shortages. Most of the conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are not efficient in the removal of emerging contaminants from the water, which will cause serious issues to the environment, human and animal life. This research investigated the possibilities of treating wastewater for reuse. First, the feasibility of utilizing a biofiltration system without pre-treatment for removing emerging contaminants …
Using Human Computation And Harmonic Expansions For Characterization And Design Of Grain Boundary Networks, Christopher W. Adair
Using Human Computation And Harmonic Expansions For Characterization And Design Of Grain Boundary Networks, Christopher W. Adair
Theses and Dissertations
Grain Boundary Networks (GBNs) are a high-dimensional feature in polycrystalline microstructural materials that are formed from the crystallographic degrees of freedom. This feature affects multiple material properties such as diffusivity, fracture, elasticity, heat transfer, and others. The link between the crystallography and the material properties is called the structure-property linkage, and allows for simulation and design of materials. While it is possible to use the structure-property linkage to design materials for better performance, the high-dimensional nature of the interconnected grain boundaries preclude the use of many common optimization algorithms for efficiency or local minima considerations. This work shows how the …

This research presents a novel technique that refines the performance of a frequency event detection algorithm with four adjustable parameters based on signal processing and statistical methods. The algorithm parameters were optimized using two well-established optimization techniques: Grey Wolf Optimization and Particle Swarm Optimization. Unlike conventional approaches that apply equally weighted metrics within the objective function, this work implements variable weighted metrics that prioritize specificity, thereby strengthening detection accuracy by minimizing false-positive events. Realistic small- and large-scale frequency datasets were processed and analyzed, incorporating various events, quasi-events, and non-events obtained from a phasor measurement unit in the Western Interconnection. An …

Conventional poultry management techniques are failing to meet increased demand for poultry products as the population continues to grow. As a result, this issue has become a major concern for small-scale farmers, particularly those in low-income areas, in terms of food security. One of the main reasons for this is that the farmers rely on intensive farming methods which are inefficient for automating daily poultry operations. However, intensive farming methods pose major environmental concerns to ecosystems and poultry health. Also, the environmental conditions, welfare, and productivity of poultry operations may be harmed by the global climate crisis and poultry waste …

Statistical methods called correlation measures are employed to express the degree of association or relationship between two variables. The correlation coefficient which may be computed in a variety of ways is the most often used kind of correlation measure in many disciplines including biology, psychology, economics, and finance. Knowing the correlations between variables is essential for analysis and decision-making. This paper aims to commence a novel type of correlation measure called Neutrosophic Micro vague Correlation Measure and Neutrosophic Micro Vague Weighted Correlation Measure. Further demonstrates the implementation of the Neutrosophic Micro Vague correlation measure in the MCDM Problem. By adopting …

Improved Estimator For Population Mean Utilizing Known Medians Of Two Auxiliary Variables Under Neutrosophic Framework, Rajesh Singh, Shobh Nath Tiwari
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
In the context of classical statistics, the estimation of the population mean is done with determinate, precise, and crisp data when auxiliary information is available. However, there are instances where dealing with uncertain, indeterminate, and imprecise data in interval form is required. To overcome this issue, Florentin Smarandache introduced neutrosophic statistics as a novel approach. This paper introduces a neutrosophic modified ratio-cum-product log-type estimator for the estimation of the population mean using known medians of two auxiliary variables in the neutrosophic context. The bias and mean squared error (MSE) for the proposed estimators are computed to the first-order approximation. The …

Some Graph Parameters For Superhypertree-Width And Neutrosophictree-Width, Takaaki Fujita, Florentin Smarandache
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Graph characteristics are often studied through various parameters, with ongoing research dedicated to exploring these aspects. Among these, graph width parameters—such as treewidth—are particularly important due to their practical applications in algorithms and real-world problems. A hypergraph generalizes traditional graph theory by abstracting and extending its concepts [77]. More recently, the concept of a SuperHyperGraph has been introduced as a further generalization of the hypergraph. Neutrosophic logic [133], a mathematical framework, extends classical and fuzzy logic by allowing the simultaneous consideration of truth, indeterminacy, and falsity within an interval. In this paper, we explore Superhypertree-width, Neutrosophic treewidth, and t-Neutrosophic tree-width.

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
In this article, we introduce the concepts of MBJ-neutrosophic BP-subalgebras and MBJ-neutrosophic α-ideals in BP-algebra by applying MBJ-neutrosophic logic to algebraic structure BP-algebra. We prove that the intersection of two MBJ-neutrosophic α-ideals and the inverse image of an MBJ-neutrosophic α-ideal are also MBJ-neutrosophic α-ideals. Furthermore, we prove an MBJ-neutrosophic set is an MBJ-neutrosophic BP-subalgebra if and only if its level sets are BP-subalgebras.

Solving N-Players Continuous Differential Games Under Neutrosophic Environment, M. G. Brikaa
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Uncertainty plays a crucial role in decision-making problems, particularly in game theory. Various forms of uncertainty have been explored in the literature, including fuzzy, soft, rough, and interval-based approaches. Game theory has been extensively studied under these uncertainty models, with researchers addressing vagueness, and imprecision from multiple perspectives. More recently, neutrosophic sets have emerged as an alternative framework for handling uncertainty. Neutrosophic numbers effectively incorporate indeterminacy in decision-making by considering factors such as intuition, assumptions, judgment, behavior, evaluation, and preferences of decision-makers. This paper presents a novel approach to solving a new class of n-player continuous differential games within a …

An Approach For Hybridizing N-Subalgebra With Quantified Neutrosophic Set Using G-Algebra, Neha Andaleeb Khalid, Muhammad Saeed
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Neutrosophic sets are a generalized form of fuzzy sets as well as intuitionistic fuzzy sets, as they address the uncertainty factor as an independent component along with truthfulness and falsity. However, traditional neutrosophic approaches often struggle with effectively managing and quantifying indeterminate elements in complex algebraic structures. To address this limitation, this paper employs an expanded version of the neutrosophic set, incorporating a subalgebra. The proposed research is multifaceted: firstly, the new concept of N-Subalgebra (NSU) is proposed. This is the modified setting in the family of subalgebras whose proposed name is the representation of the author's initial name. Secondly, …

Sunlight disinfection is an important inactivation process for enteric viruses in water. Understanding how dark biotic processes, such as zooplankton filter feeding, impact sunlight disinfection for viruses has important implications for public health. This research quantifies the uptake of MS2, a model for enteric viruses, by the filter feeder Branchionus plicatilis (rotifer) and the effects of such uptake on subsequent sunlight inactivation of MS2. Experiments co-incubating MS2 with rotifers showed 2.6 log viral removal over 120 hours. Viable virus was recovered from rotifer bodies after co-incubation, indicating incomplete viral inactivation via ingestion. When live rotifers were co-incubated with MS2 and …

[First paragraph] Cyber threats are evolving in complexity and frequency, posing significant challenges for cybersecurity professionals in identifying, categorizing, and responding to attacks in real time. Unlike traditional warfare, where battlefield awareness is based on fixed geographic warfare, cyber operations involve abstract attack vectors, non-linear threat escalation, and rapidly changing network conditions. Modern cyber threats, such as advanced persistent threats (APTs), polymorphic malware, and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, require adaptive visualization techniques that provide real-time awareness and facilitate rapid decision-making. However, existing symbology standards, such as MIL-STD-2525D, were not designed to accommodate the dynamic nature of cyber warfare. The inability …

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Emergency responders face significant risks of injury and death from struck-by crashes while operating on or near roadways. Annually, about 50 responders are killed, and hundreds more are injured, leading to operational disruptions and damage to life-saving equipment (ERSI, 2024). This study takes a data-driven approach to identify key risk factors and effective countermeasures for reducing the severity of struck-by crashes. Key findings indicate that struck-by crashes most frequently occur on weekends during late-night hours (2 AM–4 AM), often at crash scenes or disabled vehicle scenes on limited-access highways. Driver behavior – particularly “D” drivers (distracted, drugged, drowsy, disgruntled) – …
