A Method For Studying Sequential Faults On A Three Phase Distribution Transformer, Shashi Kant Pandey

Masters Theses

"A method has been presented for studying sequential faults on opposite sides of a three-phase distribution transformer using the theory of symmetrical components and Alpha, Beta, and Zero components of three-phase systems. The effect of the faults on the distribution system has also been analyzed and improvements in the protection scheme suggested. The sequential faults occurred, one after the other, on the distribution system of the Central Electric Power Cooperative of Jefferson City in the state of Missouri resulting in a double unbalanced fault condition. The data used in the example problem has been supplied through the courtesy of the …

The Design Of A High Temperature Thermoelectric Generator Element Using Silicon Carbide, John Talmage Barrow Jr. Jan 1971

The Design Of A High Temperature Thermoelectric Generator Element Using Silicon Carbide, John Talmage Barrow Jr.

Masters Theses

"This report presents the design of an optimum, high temperature silicon carbide thermoelectric generator element. The analytical efforts have been divided into three basic parts, the development of the theory, the accumulation of the data, and the optimization of the design. The first step in the theory development was the derivation of accurate design equations. With this done, the design philosophy and computer program were constructed, the latter utilizing a subroutine to contain the design equations. The data was obtained from a survey of many references and, for the most part, was found to be inexact, requiring the consideration of …

Perturbation And Sensitivity Analysis Of An Urban Model, Nicola Ann Nelson Jan 1971

Perturbation And Sensitivity Analysis Of An Urban Model, Nicola Ann Nelson

Masters Theses

"This work describes a sensitivity analysis of the nine major system variables of the urban model postulated by Dr. Jay W. Forrester in his book Urban Dynamics. This model simulates the growth of a city from a nearly empty land area through a 250 year life cycle. Using small perturbations about the system trajectories, sensitivity matrices were computed at 135 years (growth period) and 240 years (equilibrium). The results show a matrix heavily weighted to give large sensitivity coefficients to the three housing variables, the PH sector being the most sensitive. Each of the housing sectors was analyzed further to …

Practical Application Of Digital Computer To Distribution Systems, Juan Vincente Saavedra

Masters Theses

"Given a three phase ac power distribution system, a digital computer program is presented which determines a complete steady state solution for a given condition. The network data is processed by the computer into an admittance matrix, and these parameters are stored in a manner that enables the computer program to operate upon them as the coefficient of a simultaneous set of nonlinear equations. This set of equations are solved by the Gauss-Seidel Iterative Process improved by a modification of the relaxation method. Practical experience with the distribution system of the Davenport, Iowa, plant of the Aluminum Company of America …

Stability And Synthesis Of Transfer Functions Rational In W = E To The Power Of The Square Root Of T (S² + Bs + C) And Omega = The Square Root Of T (S² + Bs + C), James Fred Archer

Masters Theses

"The bounded input-bounded output stability is investigated for networks containing uniformly distributed LRGC, LRC, GRC and G(ω)RC elements. The region of stability in the W plane (W = e to the power of the square root of (s² + bs + c), Θ plane (Θ = the square root of (s² + bs + c), and S plane (S = s²+bs+c) is found in each case so that if the poles of a transfer function rational in W, Θ or S lie within this region the system is stable. After obtaining a desired transfer function rational in W = e …

Calculation Of Eddy Current Loss Of A Disc, Kou Quen Chang Jan 1971

Calculation Of Eddy Current Loss Of A Disc, Kou Quen Chang

Masters Theses

"A method is presented to calculate the eddy current losses of a uniform disc with an opening in the center and excited by a circular current loopage First, the disc is subdivided into smaller concentric rings, then the self-inductances, the mutual inductances between these smaller rings, the mutual inductances between the excitation coil and the smaller rings, and the resistance of the rings are calculated. Next, the eddy current flowing in each ring is obtained by solving a complex matrix equation of the form [X] [I] = [V] where X is the impedance matrix, I is the eddy current matrix, …

Frequency Division Using Cascaded Phase-Locked Loops, Curtis B. Abshier Jan 1971

Frequency Division Using Cascaded Phase-Locked Loops, Curtis B. Abshier

Masters Theses

"In many practical communication systems it is necessary to generate phase coherent subharmonics of an input tone. A useful system for accomplishing this task is a system of phase-locked loops in cascade. It is shown that when the feed-forward function is matched, the phase error of the second loop is zero. Analytical analysis and computer simulation prove that the minimum time to achieve phase-lock is obtained when the feed-forward function is matched. Under this condition, necessary design parameters are determined with ease"--Abstract, page i.

Variable-Threshold-Mixed-Weight Threshold Element, Cheng-Chung Liu Jan 1971

Variable-Threshold-Mixed-Weight Threshold Element, Cheng-Chung Liu

Masters Theses

"A threshold element (TE) is a mathematical model of a class of logic gates. The desirability of a threshold element in the application of digital systems stems from its richness of logic power and its relative economy. On the other hand, the tighter tolerences required by the threshold logic element as compared to conventional logic gates have prevented them from being utilized extensively. The purpose of this thesis is to propose a versatile threshold element having high noise immunity and loose tolerance requirement. The proposed TE which has variable threshold and mixed weight capability uses current switching to enhance noise …

A Time And Frequency Domain Approach To The Optimization Of Linear Multivariable Regulators, Eugene Charles Machacek

Masters Theses

"Optimal design and analysis of a multivariable regulator may be achieved in either the frequency or time domain. This paper describes the formulation of the matrix Riccati equation in the time domain and the Wiener-Hopf equation and the root-square-locus in the frequency domain. The necessary requirements which must be satisfied in order to achieve an optimal control vector when using a quadratic performance index are presented for both domains. The resultant optimal control vector is shown to be a linear function of the system state vector. The effect of the quadratic performance index weighting matrices on the optimal system closed-loop …

Identification Of Linear Systems With Delay Via A Learning Model, Hugh Francis Spence Jan 1971

Identification Of Linear Systems With Delay Via A Learning Model, Hugh Francis Spence

Doctoral Dissertations

"The effects of input delay on an identification scheme using a learning model are investigated. The parameter adjustment laws for the learning model are derived through Lyapunov methods similar to those used for the model reference adaptive control systems of Parks. For no measurement noise or delay mismatch between the learning model and system, the parameters are adjusted to bring the error between model and plant to zero. When there is delay mismatch between the inputs of the learning model and the unknown system, the convergence of the parameters of the learning model to those of the unknown system is …

After transforming the desired transfer function into a function rational in W = e[superscript square root of sRC] , state-variable synthesis methods are applied to obtain a model containing elements with transfer functions of the form 1/W. A circuit is then presented for the 1/W block along with error analysis and design procedures for use in construction of the model. The elements of the synthesis procedures of Wyndrum and O'Shea are presented for comparison. Furthermore, synthesis of functions rational in W and Θ = …

Triangular Signal Stabilization Of Nonlinear Systems, Kamaleddin Yadavar Nikravesh Jan 1971

Triangular Signal Stabilization Of Nonlinear Systems, Kamaleddin Yadavar Nikravesh

Masters Theses

"Many nonlinear systems display self-sustained oscillations which are often undesirable. The stabilizing effect of a high frequency input signal on an oscillating system with one nonlinearity is determined by the characteristics of the nonlinear element in the system, the linear portion of the system and the amplitude of the signal. This investigation has been concerned with the effect of a triangular wave stabilizing signal on these self oscillations. The equivalent gains for several common nonlinearities are derived. The pseudo describing function introduced by Oldenburger and Boyer for sinusoidal stabilization has been extended to the triangular wave case, and it is …

Complex Disjunctive Decompositions Of Incompletely Specified Boolean Functions., Stuart Lee Hight Jul 1970

Complex Disjunctive Decompositions Of Incompletely Specified Boolean Functions., Stuart Lee Hight

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This dissertation extends the theory of Ashenhurst and Curtis on complex disjunctive decompositions of Boolean functions. The extension takes this theory into the realm of incompletely specifies Boolean functions, that is, those with don-t-care conditions (phi’s). First, the theory is extended to a simple decomposition through a compatibility relation on incompletely specified Boolean vectors whose elements are 0’s, 1’s and phi’s. This relations is applied to the columns of the decomposition charts used by Curtis and Ashenhurst. To accomplish complex disjunctive decompositions, a new Boolean variable, called a constrained don’t-care is introduced as a component of a new Boolean vector …

Oscillations In Pulse Frequency Modulated Control Systems, Warren Joseph Guy May 1970

Oscillations In Pulse Frequency Modulated Control Systems, Warren Joseph Guy

Dissertations

This dissertation is concerned with oscillations and their stability which occur in a control system containing two nonlinearities, separated by linear elements. Specifically the nonlinearities are Integral Pulse Frequency Modulators and the linear elements are described by ordinary differential equations which are linear. The IPFM can be modelled by a quantizer with hysteresis and many other PFM laws are related to IPFM, thus the study applies to more than just IPFM alone.

Boundaries on the system parameters are identified within which free oscillation may be possible. These boundaries give sufficient conditions for stability and necessary conditions for instability. Also since …

Vacuum Deposition Of Thin Films Of Ultra-High Thickness Uniformity On Conical Substrates Having Extreme Curvature, Richard Bechtel May 1970

Vacuum Deposition Of Thin Films Of Ultra-High Thickness Uniformity On Conical Substrates Having Extreme Curvature, Richard Bechtel

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

For many industrial and analytical applications of thin films it is very essential to have a uniform thickness of the deposit. In response to this need, various techniques have been devised that are capable of providing the required uniformity on planar and slightly-curved spherical substrates. However, when a severe curvature (such as that encountered with some conical substrates) is introduced, the deposit uniformity that is obtainable with present techniques becomes quite poor. Thus, the need exists for new technology in this respect. Theoretical consideration is given to the problem of obtaining an ultra-uniform thin film coating on conical substrates. The …

Systems Reliability Using The Flow Graph, Kenneth Edward Farrier Jan 1970

Systems Reliability Using The Flow Graph, Kenneth Edward Farrier

Dissertations and Theses

The problem of calculating the reliability of a complex system of interacting elements is delineated to a linear system, no element of the system having a reliability distribution in terms of any other e1ement of the system, where only one path is taken through the system at a time. A precise definition is then developed to specify the reliability of the linear, single path at a time, system. A precise and concise generating function is found that effortlessly produces the reliability of the linear, single path at a time, system directly from the reliability flew graph of the system.

A Mathematical Model For The Neutron Dependence Of Neutral Base Region Recombination, Jonas Bereisa Jr. Jan 1970

A Mathematical Model For The Neutron Dependence Of Neutral Base Region Recombination, Jonas Bereisa Jr.

Masters Theses

"A discrete, deterministic, mathematical model is developed for the neutral bulk base region of graded base devices which accounts for both the effects of recombination and the built-in electric field in the bulk base region at low, intermediate, and moderate current/injection levels. This model is applied to a study of neutron radiation effects in double diffused silicon transistors. Exact expressions are developed for the injected emitter, base and collector currents, the base recombination term, and the ratio of base current increase to collector current decrease as functions of device geometry, impurity profile, and neutron fluence. Neutron-induced current gain degradation is …

"A QDSB/FM communication system is analyzed with emphasis placed on the QDSB demodulation process and the AGC action in the FM transmitter. The effect of noise in both the pilot and message signals is investigated. The detection gain and mean square error is calculated for the QDSB baseband demodulation process. The mean square error is also evaluated for the QDSB/FM system. The AGC circuit is simulated on a digital computer. Errors introduced into the AGC system are analyzed with emphasis placed on nonlinear gain functions for the voltage controlled amplifier"--Abstract, page ii.

Digital Simulation Of A Costas Loop Demodulator In Gaussian Noise And Cw Interference, Ajay Mugatlal Mehta Jan 1970

Digital Simulation Of A Costas Loop Demodulator In Gaussian Noise And Cw Interference, Ajay Mugatlal Mehta

Masters Theses

"A digital computer model of a Costas loop has been employed to study the effects of Gaussian noise and continuous-wave interference on the detection of biphase modulated signals. The dependence of bit-error probability, mean-square error between input and output, phase-error variance and threshold on signal-to-Gaussian-noise power ratio, interference-to-Gaussian-noise power ratio and frequency offset of the interference have been investigated and compared with previously obtained experimental results. The model has been verified for its accuracy in the case of no noise and when Gaussian noise is present at its input"--Abstract, Page ii.

Statistical Estimate Of Positional Error Inherent In Very Low Frequency Radio Navigation (Range-Range), Jimmie D. Mcginnis Jan 1970

Statistical Estimate Of Positional Error Inherent In Very Low Frequency Radio Navigation (Range-Range), Jimmie D. Mcginnis

Masters Theses

"To determine the effectiveness of Very Low Frequency (VLF) navigation in certain areas of the world, it is necessary that a method be developed to estimate the positional error associated with VLF relative positioning techniques. This paper presents a method which consists of a least-mean-squared procedure to sum up the errors contributed by each station being monitored. Since phase jitter (i.e., phase fluctuation) is a random variable, a statistical approach is employed to produce a one Σ ellipse centered about the true position. In short, this method defines the size and orientation of an area called an error ellipse which …

An Approximate Min-Max Solution To The Identification Problem, Richard Loyd Warren Jan 1970

An Approximate Min-Max Solution To The Identification Problem, Richard Loyd Warren

Masters Theses

"A technique based on the min-max error criterion is proposed for identifying a dynamic system in terms of a discrete-time model from the system response to a deterministic input. A linear, single-input/single-output, lumped-parameter, time-invariant (at least during the measurement interval) system is assumed. Although the resulting problem is non-linear, it is shown that linear programming techniques are applicable if a realistic approximation is made. The technique is implemented on the digital computer and evaluated by considering a number of typical discrete-time systems. The effects of additive noise are also considered"--Abstract, page ii.

Baseband Agc In An Am-Fm Telemetry System, Richard S. Simpson, William H. Tranter Jan 1970

Baseband Agc In An Am-Fm Telemetry System, Richard S. Simpson, William H. Tranter

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The use of AGc loops at the input and output of the FM link in an AM-FM telemetry system allows the mean-square transmitter deviation to be maintained near maximum value, even though data may be nonstationary. However, errors result because of the inability of the receiver AGc loop to track perfectly gain variations in the transmitter loop. In this paper the general characteristics of AGc are discussed, and a theoretical analysis is performed to determine the time constant, steady-state error, and tracking error for a first-order loop. Also, tracking error for first order and second-order loops is investigated by simulation. …

Probe Detection Of Microwave Perturbation In A Magnetoplasma, Show-Ran Peter Wang Jan 1970

Probe Detection Of Microwave Perturbation In A Magnetoplasma, Show-Ran Peter Wang

Masters Theses

"When a microwave signal with a frequency near the electron upper hybrid resonance is applied to a magnetoplasma, it will excite the plasma. The perturbation of plasma can be detected by using Langmuir probes. The particular plasma used in this experiment is an argon discharge type and the density is relatively low (n~10⁸ cm⁻³). The electron temperature is about 7000º K. Because a magnetic field is applied to the plasma, it is necessary to use the probe theory in a magnetic field to calculate the electron number density from the electron temperature. In order to determine the electron upper hybrid …

The Evaluation Of Radar Guided Missile Performance Using Various Target Glint Models, Franklin Delano Hockett Jan 1970

The Evaluation Of Radar Guided Missile Performance Using Various Target Glint Models, Franklin Delano Hockett

Masters Theses

"A radar guided missile seeker approaching a target arrives at a crossover point beyond which the entire target is illuminated by the missile seeker's radar antenna beam. When this occurs, for a complex target, the radar senses a time changing target center location which may greatly complicate the terminal tracking portion of the seeker's flight. This thesis documents various glint models in use today and compares the performance of these models by using a seeker model to determine the effect of glint on terminal tracking performance. A large volume of data has been compiled describing various radar characteristics of complex …

A Digital Simulation For Optimum Nonlinear Detection Of Binary Signals In Impulsive Noise, Ralph Bernard Fluchel Jan 1970

A Digital Simulation For Optimum Nonlinear Detection Of Binary Signals In Impulsive Noise, Ralph Bernard Fluchel

Masters Theses

"The problem of reducing the effects of impulsive noise on binary communication systems is considered.
